To install OptiFine, download the build that matches your Minecraft: Java Edition version from optifine.net, launch that vanilla version once, then open the downloaded .jar installer and click Install. Reopen the official Minecraft Launcher, select the new OptiFine installation, and play it.
OptiFine does not work with Minecraft Bedrock Edition, and its downloads are version-specific. The latest OptiFine file is not necessarily compatible with the latest Minecraft release.

Before you start
- You need Minecraft: Java Edition. OptiFine is not a Bedrock Edition add-on or mod. Java Edition is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux; Bedrock is used on consoles, mobile devices, and other non-Java platforms. See Mojang’s edition comparison.
- You need the official Minecraft Launcher and the exact Minecraft version supported by your OptiFine download.
- Back up important worlds before changing versions. Mojang warns that opening a world in an older version can permanently damage it. See Mojang’s Java world-backup guidance.
Which OptiFine version should you download?
Match the OptiFine build to the Minecraft version you intend to launch. For example, an OptiFine build for Minecraft 1.21.11 will not create a working installation for Minecraft 1.21.4.
As of August 7, 2026, the official downloads page lists OptiFine HD U K1 pre2 and K1 pre1 for Minecraft 26.1.2. Both are explicitly marked Preview versions. For Minecraft 1.21.11, it lists the non-preview OptiFine HD U J9 and J8 builds. Older supported versions have separate downloads, including 1.21.10, 1.21.9, 1.21.8, 1.21.7, 1.21.4, 1.21.3, 1.21.1, 1.20.6, and 1.20.4.

Check the current labels rather than assuming that “latest” means stable. Download only from the official OptiFine Downloads page.
Download the official OptiFine installer
- Open optifine.net/downloads.
- Find the heading for your exact Minecraft version.
- Choose the OptiFine build you want.
- Click Download to use OptiFine’s advertising redirect, or click Mirror to download from the OptiFine site without that redirect.
- On the resulting page, click Download again if prompted.
- Save the
.jarfile. Its name should identify the Minecraft version and OptiFine build, such asOptiFine_26.1.2_HD_U_K1_pre2.jar.
Avoid search-result downloads and unofficial mirrors. Repackaged, outdated, or malicious files can look similar to the genuine installer.

- Open the official Minecraft Launcher.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Launch the exact vanilla version corresponding to your OptiFine file.
- Wait until the game reaches the main menu, then close Minecraft and the launcher.
This first launch allows the launcher to create the required game files. If the version is unavailable, create an installation through Installations → New → Create new installation → VERSION → Create. Mojang documents this process in its Java Edition version guide.
Install OptiFine with the graphical installer
- Make sure Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher are closed.
- Open the downloaded OptiFine
.jarfile. - Confirm that the installer shows the Minecraft directory used by the official launcher.
- Click Install.
- Wait for the message OptiFine is successfully installed.
- Click OK.
The installer normally detects the Minecraft folder automatically. Change the folder only if you use a custom game directory. Do not assume that %appdata%.minecraft is correct when the launcher or a third-party launcher uses another location.

Windows
Double-click the file. If Windows opens it in WinRAR, 7-Zip, or another archive program, right-click it and select Open with → Java(TM) Platform SE binary. You can also run it from a terminal using the command below.
macOS and Linux
Open the file with an installed desktop Java runtime. If the file association does not work, use the terminal method.

If double-clicking does nothing, open a terminal and change to the folder containing the download. Then run:
java -jar OptiFine_26.1.2_HD_U_K1_pre2.jarReplace the filename with the one you actually downloaded. If it contains spaces, put the filename in quotation marks:

java -jar "OptiFine filename.jar"The -jar option tells Java to run the specified JAR application, as documented by Oracle’s Java documentation.
If the terminal reports java: command not found, Java is not available on your system path. Install a desktop Java runtime, restart the terminal, and run the command again. Oracle’s current end-user download page lists Java 8 Update 491, released April 21, 2026: Java downloads.
Launch the OptiFine installation
- Reopen the Minecraft Launcher.
- Open Installations.
- Find the newly created OptiFine installation.
- Select it and click Play.
If it is missing, enable the Modded filter on the Installations screen if that option is available. You can also use Installations → New → Create new installation → VERSION and select the OptiFine version from the list after the installer finishes.
Confirm that OptiFine is active
- Launch Minecraft through the OptiFine installation, not the vanilla installation.
- Open Options.
- Open Video Settings.
- Look for OptiFine-specific sections such as Shaders, Details, and Performance.
If those options are absent, the launcher probably started vanilla Minecraft or the wrong game version.

Troubleshooting
The JAR opens as a ZIP or archive
Windows has associated .jar files with an archive utility instead of Java. Use Open with → Java(TM) Platform SE binary, or launch it explicitly:

java -jar "filename.jar"Double-clicking does nothing
Java may be missing, the file association may be broken, the download may be incomplete, or the file may not actually be a JAR. Run the terminal command to reveal the error. Do not rename a non-JAR file to make it appear to be one.
The installer cannot find Minecraft
Launch the matching vanilla version once, close the launcher, and reopen the installer. Then verify its installation-folder field. If you use a custom game directory or third-party launcher, select that launcher’s actual directory.
No OptiFine installation appears
- Fully close and reopen the Minecraft Launcher.
- Open Installations.
- Enable the Modded filter if present.
- Confirm that the OptiFine and Minecraft versions match exactly.
- Run the installer again while the official launcher is closed.
Installing an OptiFine 1.21.11 build does not create a usable OptiFine installation for 1.21.4. See the OptiFine installation guide for the launcher workflow.

Minecraft launches, but OptiFine features are missing
Select the OptiFine entry under Installations and click Play. Then check the Minecraft version and the Video Settings menu again.

First launch the OptiFine installation by itself. If it works, add other mods one at a time. OptiFine’s official FAQ identifies mod conflicts and other mods overwriting OptiFine classes as possible causes. It recommends installing OptiFine last when combining it with other mods, except for mods specifically designed to load after OptiFine.
FPS is unchanged or lower
OptiFine does not guarantee a higher frame rate in every setup. High-quality settings such as Render Distance Extreme, Antialiasing, and Anisotropic Filtering can reduce performance. FPS limits, HD texture-pack features such as Connected Textures or Custom Sky, mod conflicts, and an incomplete installation can also affect results.
For a clean comparison, use the same world, render distance, texture pack, and settings in vanilla and OptiFine. To restore OptiFine’s defaults, use Video Settings → Other → Reset Video Settings.
Chunks flicker or render incorrectly
OptiFine identifies Chunk Loading: Multi-Core as a possible cause when the graphics driver does not support it correctly. Disable Threaded Optimization or OpenGL Threading in your graphics-card control panel, then test again. Details are available in the OptiFine FAQ.

Important compatibility limits
- Bedrock: OptiFine is a Java Edition mod. Bedrock uses add-ons instead; see the Bedrock Add-Ons FAQ.
- Forge: Forge is not required for the standard OptiFine installer. It matters only for a Forge-based mod setup, and compatibility varies by OptiFine build.
- Performance: OptiFine may improve performance or graphics options on some systems, but it is not a guaranteed FPS multiplier.
- Java runtimes: The launcher’s bundled Java runtime can run Minecraft without making Java available to open downloaded JAR files. A separate desktop Java runtime or the
java -jarcommand may be necessary. - Modpacks: OptiFine’s FAQ says redistribution in a modpack is generally not allowed without explicit permission.
