How to Download and Install Steam on Windows 11 PC
The safest way to install Steam on Windows 11 is to download it from Valve’s official page: store.steampowered.com/about/. Select Install Steam, run the downloaded SteamSetup.exe file, complete the setup wizard, then let Steam update before signing in.
Installing the Steam client is free. Games are installed separately, and individual games may be paid, free-to-play, or subject to their own hardware and anti-cheat requirements.
Before you install Steam
Check Windows 11 and administrator access
Steam is intended to run on a supported modern Windows installation. Valve ended Steam Client support for 32-bit Windows on January 1, 2026. A normal 64-bit Windows 11 PC is generally outside that limitation, but the Steam client’s compatibility does not guarantee that every game will run well.

Check whether Windows is in S mode
Windows 11 in S mode only permits apps from the Microsoft Store. Valve’s conventional Windows installer is an external .exe file, so you must switch out of S mode before installing it.
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Activation.
- Find the S mode section.
- Select the link that opens the Microsoft Store page.
- Select Get to switch out of S mode.
Switching out of S mode is free, but Microsoft says it is permanent: the PC cannot be returned to S mode afterward. A school- or company-managed computer may prevent the change. Microsoft’s S mode instructions

How to download Steam on Windows 11
- Open a web browser.
- Go to https://store.steampowered.com/about/.
- Select Install Steam.
- Save the Windows installer.
Unless your browser is configured differently, the file will normally be in File Explorer > Downloads. The current observed filename is:
SteamSetup.exe
Do not run an installer simply because it has “Steam” in its name. Confirm that you downloaded it from Valve’s site and that the file is the expected installer before opening it.
How to install Steam on Windows 11
- Open File Explorer > Downloads.
- Double-click
SteamSetup.exe. - If User Account Control asks whether the installer may make changes, select Yes only if you downloaded the file from Valve’s official website.
- Choose the setup language and select Next.
- Choose the Steam program folder, or keep the default location.
- Select Install.
- Leave the launch option enabled if you want Steam to open immediately, then select Finish.
The exact wording or arrangement of the setup screens can change, but the installer generally asks for a language and destination before installing. You do not need to disable Windows Defender, SmartScreen, User Account Control, or the firewall. SmartScreen is a Windows reputation-based protection system for downloaded files and applications; investigate a warning instead of bypassing it blindly. Where should Steam be installed?
For most users, keep the Steam client in its default folder:
C:Program Files (x86)Steam
The x86 in this path does not by itself mean that you installed the wrong Steam version. It is a commonly documented default folder. You can choose another internal drive if your system drive is unusually small or your organization requires a different location.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
It is usually more useful to keep the client in its default location and place large games in a separate Steam Library on a larger internal SSD or HDD. Valve supports alternate library locations through Steam’s Storage settings and warns that installing Steam itself on an external hard drive can cause performance issues. External drives may work in some setups, but they are more vulnerable to disconnection and inconsistent performance. Valve’s Steam folder and library guidance
Launch Steam, update it, and sign in
- Open Steam from the desktop shortcut or the Windows Start menu.
- Wait for the initial Steam Client update to finish.
- Enter the credentials for your existing Steam account, or select Create a new Account.
- Complete email confirmation and Steam Guard verification if requested.
You do not need a Steam account before downloading or installing the client. You can create one after Steam opens. Valve’s account-registration page asks for an email address, email confirmation, country of residence, CAPTCHA verification, and acceptance of the Steam Subscriber Agreement. Users under 13 may not create a Steam account, and additional age rules may apply in some countries. Create a Steam account · Valve’s new-user help

How to install your first Steam game
Installing Steam does not install a game automatically. Once you are signed in:
- Open Library.
- Select a game owned by the account.
- Select Install.
- Choose an existing Steam Library location.
- Review the required disk space and select the download option.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete, then select Play.
The usual default game folder is:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon
This is only a default. Games may be stored in another library if you selected a different drive or folder.
Change where Steam games are installed
To add a second drive or change the default library, open:
Steam > Settings > Storage
Use the + button to add a library location, then choose the drive or folder. From the same Storage screen, you can review installed games, select a default library for future installations, and move games between supported library locations.
A separate internal SSD is usually the best choice when the C: drive is small or games will use substantially more space than the client. Check the required space shown in each game’s installation dialog; large games can require tens or hundreds of gigabytes, and updates may need additional temporary space.
Optional installation with WinGet

Run the command in Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt. WinGet may ask you to accept source or package agreements, and it depends on a functioning App Installer/WinGet setup. The package identifier is listed as Valve.Steam. Valve.Steam package listing · Microsoft WinGet troubleshooting
Do not confuse Valve.Steam with Valve.SteamCMD. SteamCMD is a separate command-line tool intended mainly for server and administrative use. For a first installation, Valve’s official download page is easier to verify.

“Windows cannot install this app” or the installer is blocked
- Confirm the download came from
store.steampowered.com. - Confirm the current filename is
SteamSetup.exe. - Download a fresh copy instead of reusing a damaged or incomplete file.
- Check Settings > System > Activation for S mode.
- If the device belongs to a school or company, ask its administrator whether installation is restricted.
- Do not permanently disable SmartScreen, antivirus, User Account Control, or other Windows protections.
Steam installs but cannot connect or update
- Confirm that the browser can reach Steam websites.
- Check Steam’s service or server-status information.
- Restart Steam and Windows.
- Restart the router or modem.
- Try a wired connection if available.
- Check Windows Firewall and third-party security software.
- If Steam was recently updated, remove stale firewall permissions so Windows can prompt for fresh permissions.
- On a school, university, business, proxy, or filtered network, contact the network administrator.
Valve documents Steam executables including steaminstall.exe, steam.exe, hl.exe, hl2.exe, and steamTmp.exe. Allow the required TCP and UDP traffic when the firewall prompts. Do not leave the firewall disabled. Some games require additional ports, and some institutional networks or proxies block Steam traffic, so avoid copying a fixed port list without checking Valve’s current documentation. Steam downloads are slow
Internet plans generally advertise bits per second, while Steam commonly displays bytes per second. Eight bits equal one byte. For example, Valve notes that 768 KB/s is approximately 6,144 Kb/s, or about 6 Mb/s.
Check the download server at:
Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region
Select the region nearest your location. If that content server is unusually busy, try another nearby region. Also check Wi-Fi signal quality, other active downloads, router performance, and available disk speed. Valve’s slow-download troubleshooting
Steam says it is already running
This usually means a Steam process is active in the background while the interface failed to load.
- Open Task Manager.
- Close the unresponsive Steam process if it is clearly stuck.
- Open the
steam.exefile’s properties. - On the Compatibility tab, remove compatibility settings.
- Use Change settings for all users and remove them there as well.
- Restart the PC and launch Steam normally.
If that does not work, use Valve’s repair procedure. Exit Steam, preserve steamapps and steam.exe, remove the other Steam files as described by Valve, restart Windows, and launch steam.exe from the installation folder. This is a repair step, not the first thing to try. Valve’s Steam client repair procedure
Games appear uninstalled after moving or reinstalling
Steam may be pointing to a different library, the steamapps folder may not be in the expected location, an external drive may be disconnected, or library metadata may be damaged.
Open Steam > Settings > Storage and add the existing library location. If necessary, begin installing the same game into that library; Steam may verify and rediscover existing files instead of downloading everything again. Valve’s existing-game recovery guidance · Steam Storage guidance
Steam is installed, but a game will not run
Treat this as a game-specific problem rather than a Steam installation problem. Check the game’s Store page for its operating-system, CPU, memory, graphics, storage, driver, and anti-cheat requirements. Update Windows and graphics drivers, check whether antivirus quarantined a game file, and review any separate launcher or dependency errors.

- Exit Steam fully.
- Back up the

userdataas well if you need local user data and configuration. - Run the official Steam installer again.
Valve says rerunning the installer can reinstall Steam over an existing installation. Which files should remain depends on whether you are repairing the client, moving Steam, or performing a full reinstall. Uninstall Steam without losing installed games
Do not assume that uninstalling the client preserves game files. Valve warns that the ordinary uninstall process can remove installed game content.
Before uninstalling, copy or move this folder outside the Steam directory:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamapps
After reinstalling Steam, add the library location through Steam > Settings > Storage. The exact path may differ if you created a custom library. Avoid registry editing unless Valve Support specifically directs it; Valve describes manual registry removal as a last resort requiring extreme care. Valve’s uninstall and game-preservation guidance
Frequently asked questions
Is Steam free to download?
Yes. Valve distributes the Steam client as a free download. Games, downloadable content, and other products may cost money or may be free-to-play.
Is Steam compatible with Windows 11?
Yes, a supported 64-bit Windows 11 installation is the normal context for this guide. Compatibility with the client does not mean every game will run; check each game’s requirements separately.

Do I need a Steam account before installing Steam?
No. Install the client first, then sign in or choose Create a new Account. If you already own games, sign in to the original account that purchased or activated them.
Can I install Steam in Windows 11 S mode?
Not through Valve’s normal .exe installer while S mode is active. You must switch out of S mode through Microsoft Store, and Microsoft says the change is permanent.
Can I install Steam on another drive?
Yes. You can choose another internal location for the client and add separate library locations for games.
