Once the listing is confirmed, Steam is the official PC download and launch route. The process is: install the Steam client, sign in, open the game’s official store page, verify the Free To Play label, install it, then launch it from your Library. The game’s current store page and in-game menus are the authority for the final button names.

First, identify the exact Steam game
A descriptive title is not enough to safely follow a download guide. Steam search results can contain similarly described games, demos, playtests and paid editions. Open the result’s full store page and check all of the following before selecting an install control:

- The page is the official Steam listing, not a community guide or an external download page.
- The page displays Free To Play (or the current equivalent) rather than a price, demo label or time-limited event.
- The player-count and mode description match your plan. The strongest match here, Umbra Mortis, is described as a three-player online PvE shooter.
- The listed Windows version, graphics hardware and storage requirement fit your PC.
The provisional match, Umbra Mortis, is described on its Steam page this way: “This game is a 3 player coop PvE shooter where you play as members of a secret organization, Umbra Mortis.” Treat that as a description of that listing only; it is not a universal description of every free co-op shooter on Steam.

Steam’s displayed review snapshot for the Umbra Mortis listing was 83% positive from 67 user reviews when accessed in 2026. Review totals and percentages change, so regard that figure as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent score.
Install Steam on your Windows PC
For the PC version, download the client from Valve’s official Steam website. Steam’s own platform page describes the service as “the ultimate destination for playing, discussing, and creating games.” Avoid third-party installers that bundle a game client or ask for your Steam password.
- Open Valve’s official Steam page and choose Install Steam.
- Download the installer for your Windows computer.
- Run the installer and follow the on-screen setup prompts. Keep the default install location unless you have a specific reason to use another drive.
- Start Steam after installation and sign in to your Steam account, or create an account through the client if you do not already have one.
- Complete any account, email or security verification Steam requests before trying to install a game.
The Steam client is required for downloading, updating and launching the PC version. A browser page alone will not install the game into your Library.

After Steam is installed and you are signed in, use the client’s search field to locate the confirmed game title.

- Search for the exact title, such as Umbra Mortis if that is the game your group selected.
- Open the full store page and inspect the title, artwork, description and developer information. Do not install from a similarly named result without checking it.
- Find the purchase area on the right side of the listing. For the Umbra Mortis page, the listing shows Play Umbra Mortis, Free To Play and Play Game. Steam can change button wording or placement, so use the current control that starts installation.
- Select the free-play or play control. If Steam shows a confirmation dialog, read it and accept only if the title and account are correct.
- Choose an installation library or drive when Steam asks. Confirm that the destination has more free space than the listing’s stated requirement; operating-system updates and save data also need room.
- Let Steam finish downloading. The download progress appears in the client’s downloads view. Do not close Steam or shut down the PC until the queue reports completion.
- Open the Library tab, select the game and choose Play to launch it.
If the page shows a price, a demo, a playtest request or a different game name, stop and re-check the listing. “Free” can describe a permanent free-to-play release, a free demo or a temporary promotion; only the current store page establishes which one you are seeing.
Prepare your first three-player co-op session
For the Umbra Mortis match, plan around a three-player online PvE group. PvE means the team fights computer-controlled opposition rather than competing directly against another player team. The listing does not establish that the game supports a larger squad, local split-screen, cross-platform play or offline co-op, so do not promise those features to your group without checking the current page or in-game help.

- Confirm that both friends appear in the lobby or party list before starting the activity.

If an invite button is missing, first verify that everyone is running the same title and current Steam build, that all players are online and that privacy settings allow friends to join. If the game uses a lobby code or a different party system, follow the instructions shown in its own multiplayer screen rather than guessing a menu path.

Use a controller if you prefer gamepad controls
A controller is optional; keyboard and mouse remain an available PC input method unless the game’s own listing says otherwise. Steam documents support for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo controllers, as well as configuration for supported third-party devices through Steam Input.
- Connect the controller by USB or pair it over Bluetooth before launching the game. Wired connection is a useful first test if wireless pairing is unreliable.

Controller support does not guarantee identical button prompts across devices. Check the on-screen prompts and remap controls in the game before beginning a long co-op session.
Check the listed PC requirements before downloading

The listing does not state a target resolution, frame rate, graphics preset or latency threshold. A computer that technically meets the minimum may still need reduced settings, and online play can be affected by the quality of your connection and the other players’ connections. Leave additional free space beyond the stated 2 GB so Steam can patch the installation without forcing you to move files.

Troubleshoot the common installation and launch problems
The wrong game appears in search
Return to the search results and compare the complete title, store description and developer information with your friends’ listing. Do not rely on a thumbnail or a phrase such as “free co-op shooter.” If your group cannot agree on one exact page, do not install yet.
There is no free install or play button
Check whether the page is showing a paid edition, demo, playtest or regional restriction. Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Steam account. A listing can also change its access model, so the current page takes precedence over an older video or message.
The download will not start
- Check Steam’s downloads view for a paused queue or an error message.
- Confirm that the selected library drive has at least the listed 2 GB plus extra working space.
- Verify that your broadband connection is working and that Steam is not waiting on another queued update.
- Restart Steam and try the install again. If the problem affects only this title, read the error text on its store or support page rather than downloading an unofficial installer.
The game launches but friends cannot join
- Confirm that every player installed the same Steam listing and has finished any first-run setup.
- Check that all players appear online in Steam and have accepted the relevant friend requests.
- Have the host recreate the lobby and send fresh invites through the game or Steam overlay.
