Farmers & Fighters is the free, unofficial Stardew Valley–inspired tabletop RPG you can download from Maki Games’ itch.io page. It is a hack of Lasers & Feelings, re-themed around crops, gardens, animals and the countryside. Download either the complete 4.6 MB PDF or the 1.8 MB print-friendly PDF, read the character and resolution rules, then have one person facilitate a first farm or village scene. The creator explicitly says it is not an official Stardew Valley game.
If you want a game with published player-count, time and materials guidance, A Year in Farm Valley is a separate GM-less option for one to six players. It normally takes one to three hours and uses a six-sided die, playing cards, writing materials and its booklet.

The listing marks the game as released and tags it with farming, Stardew Valley and tabletop role-playing. It does not publish a required dice list, a fixed player count or a stated session length for Farmers & Fighters. Do not assume a particular die or number of players until you have checked the downloaded rules.
How to download Farmers & Fighters
- Open the Maki Games itch.io page. Use the creator’s listing for Farmers & Fighters, rather than an image repost or an unofficial file mirror. The listing is the place where the two current PDF choices are identified.
- Choose the complete file for screen reading. Select Farmers&Fighters – full 4.6 MB if you want the full layout on a laptop, tablet or phone. Save the file somewhere the facilitator can reach quickly during play.
- Choose the print-friendly file for a paper table. Select Farmers&Fighters – print friendly 1.8 MB when the group plans to print the rules. Downloading both is reasonable: the full file can remain your searchable reference while the print-friendly copy supplies handouts.
- Wait for the PDF to finish downloading. Confirm that the file opens as a PDF and that its size is approximately the size shown on the listing. If a download is interrupted, delete the incomplete file and download it again rather than trying to print a partial document.
- Open the rules before inviting players to make characters. Read the character procedure and the resolution rules first. Those are the parts that determine what information players need and how the group resolves uncertain actions.
Because the creator does not list a dice requirement on the game page, leave dice out of your “must bring” list until the PDF confirms what is needed. You can still keep ordinary tabletop supplies nearby, but present them as conveniences rather than official requirements.
Full PDF or print-friendly PDF?
Use the full 4.6 MB file when
- the facilitator will share a screen or read from a tablet;
- you want the complete visual layout while learning the rules;
- you expect to search the PDF during play;
- the group is comfortable annotating digitally.
Use the 1.8 MB print-friendly file when
- players need paper copies at the table;
- you want to reduce ink use and avoid printing a screen-oriented layout;
- you are preparing a folder that can be used without a device;
- you want spare copies for notes, maps, crops or relationship prompts.
Print one facilitator copy first and check page order, margins and legibility before producing a full set. If the PDF includes pages you do not need at the table, the facilitator can keep the complete document digitally and print only the rules and character pages that the group actually uses.
What kind of game is it?
The game’s rules lineage matters because it sets expectations. Farmers & Fighters is not a complete rewrite of D&D with farming added; it is a Lasers & Feelings hack. Players should therefore expect a compact rules engine rather than a large catalogue of classes, levels, equipment and spells. The farming theme supplies the situations, goals and atmosphere, while the hack supplies the underlying way to describe characters and resolve uncertain actions.
The listing does not publish enough detail to summarize every rule safely. Before the first scene, read the character section and the resolution section aloud or explain them in your own words. Doing that prevents a common failure mode in rules-light games: players inventing different assumptions about what a character can attempt or how a setback is decided.

The setting premise supports several kinds of play without requiring a predetermined campaign plot. A session might focus on restoring a neglected plot, protecting animals, meeting villagers, solving a local problem or deciding what to plant before a change in weather. Those are examples of framing choices for your table, not additional rules in the published game.
Start your first Farmers & Fighters session
1. Pick a facilitator
Decide who will facilitate before character creation. The facilitator can read the rules, describe the first farm or village scene, ask what each character does and apply the resolution procedure from the PDF. The source page does not publish a formal game-master title or a required experience level, so choose the person who is most comfortable keeping the conversation moving and checking the rules.
2. Set the table’s premise
Give the group one clear starting situation. For example: the characters have arrived at a small farm that needs work, or they are preparing a village garden before an important local event. Keep the premise narrow enough that everyone knows where the first scene begins. Do not promise a specific Stardew Valley character, location or story; the game is an unofficial fan-made work, and your group can create its own names and relationships.
3. Read the character rules together
Have every player read the character section before choosing a role. Ask each person to explain their character’s useful qualities in plain language. This gives the table a shared vocabulary for the resolution rules and makes it easier to spot overlapping ideas. If a player is unsure whether a detail belongs on the character sheet, let the written rules decide rather than adding a house rule during the first scene.
4. Frame the opening scene
Start with a concrete task: inspect the fields, repair a structure, find a missing animal, speak with a resident or decide how to use limited space. End the opening description with a question that requires a choice. “What do you do?” is enough; the facilitator does not need a long plot introduction.

5. Resolve only uncertain actions
When a player attempts something whose outcome is obvious, describe the result and continue. When the outcome is uncertain or a failure would change the situation, use the resolution procedure in the PDF. Keep the written rule visible so the group does not accidentally replace it with a D&D-style ability check or a die that the game never specifies.
6. Track the farm and relationships
Keep a pencil and spare paper for notes. Record crop ideas, animal names, promises, unresolved problems, map details and relationships as they appear. These notes turn small choices into continuity for the next scene without requiring a large campaign-planning document.
7. End on a useful decision
Close the first session after the group has made a meaningful farm or village decision: what to improve next, whom to help, which problem to investigate or how to respond to a new complication. Write that decision down. A short, specific open question gives the next session a starting point.

The published page confirms the PDF files but does not state a required equipment list for Farmers & Fighters. The following setup separates confirmed information from practical conveniences:

A separate option: A Year in Farm Valley
A Year in Farm Valley is not another edition of Farmers & Fighters. It is a separate, name-your-own-price, GM-less role-playing game inspired by Stardew Valley. Its creator gives unusually explicit setup information, so it is a useful alternative when a group wants to start without assigning a facilitator.
The game supports one to six players and usually takes one to three hours. The stated materials are a six-sided die, a deck of playing cards, writing materials and the booklet. The story begins with inheriting a derelict farm and can cover improving the property, exploring the area, meeting townsfolk, building a business and celebrating over a year.
The download page offers two files:
- Farm Valley v1.1 Rules.pdf — 841 kB.
- Farm Valley v1 Sample Playsheet.pdf — 246 kB.
Because the game is GM-less, the players share responsibility for interpreting prompts, recording developments and moving the story forward. The six-sided die is specifically listed among the required materials, so a standard d6 is an appropriate accessory for this alternative. That explicit requirement should not be transferred to Farmers & Fighters, whose listing does not state its dice needs.

Its stated one-to-three-hour duration is useful for scheduling, and its materials list tells you exactly what to place on the table. A solo player can also use it, because one is included in the published player range.

Use both as different formats, not interchangeable rules
The games solve different setup problems. Farmers & Fighters gives you a facilitator-led hack with two PDF layouts; A Year in Farm Valley gives you a GM-less structure with explicit components and timing. Download the one that matches your group’s preferred way to make decisions, rather than combining their procedures without checking each booklet.
Printing and file troubleshooting
The PDF will not open
Confirm that the download completed and that your device has a current PDF reader. If the file size is far below the listing’s approximate 4.6 MB or 1.8 MB, download it again. Avoid opening an incomplete file directly from a browser download preview.
The printed pages look cramped
Use the print-friendly 1.8 MB file, check the print preview and disable settings that shrink pages unnecessarily. Print one test page before producing multiple copies. Keep the full 4.6 MB file available for reading if a printed page is difficult to interpret.
The group does not know which die to use
Do not infer a die from the game’s D&D-style description or from another game. Re-open the resolution section and follow the die instruction printed there. If the downloaded rules still do not specify one, the listing has not established a requirement.
The first scene feels directionless
Return to a single concrete task: improve one part of the farm, investigate one local problem or speak with one resident. Ask each player for one action, resolve uncertainty using the rules and write down the consequence. A small decision is enough to create momentum.
