To download Minecraft: Java Edition, install the official Minecraft Launcher from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game, choose Minecraft: Java Edition, and select Play. The Launcher then downloads and installs the game.
The Launcher is free, but the full game is normally paid. Eligible players can use the official limited trial without buying it first.

Before downloading Minecraft Java
Java Edition is the computer version of Minecraft for supported Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. It does not run natively on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, or Android; those platforms use Bedrock Edition or another Minecraft product.
You also need a Microsoft account. If you buy the game, redeem a code, or previously owned it, use that same account in the Launcher. Buying Minecraft on one account and signing in with another is the most common reason the game appears unavailable.

Current system requirements
Minecraft’s current product information lists these Java Edition targets. Requirements can change, so check the official product page if your computer is close to the minimum.

These are targets, not a guarantee of smooth performance. Older support information also lists different operating-system thresholds for continued updates and online play. Use the current product page as the safer installation baseline, particularly on older Macs and Windows PCs.
How to download Minecraft Java on Windows
Download from Minecraft.net
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher download instructions.
- Download the Windows Launcher.
- Open the installer and follow its prompts.
- Start Minecraft Launcher and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition in the game list.
- Click Play and wait while the Launcher downloads the required files.
- When installation finishes, click Play again to launch the game.
Download from the Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Search for Minecraft Launcher.
- Choose the official Launcher and select Get or Install.
- Open it, sign in, select Minecraft: Java Edition, and click Play.
On Windows, the current purchase is generally sold as Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. In the Launcher, Minecraft for Windows means Bedrock Edition; it is not Java Edition.
How to download Minecraft Java on Mac
- Open the official Minecraft download page.
- Download the macOS version of Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the downloaded installer or application package and complete the installation.
- Launch the app and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
- Choose Minecraft: Java Edition and select Play.
- Wait for the game files to download, then select Play when installation is complete.
Java Edition is the Minecraft PC edition available on macOS. The Windows-only Bedrock edition, labeled Minecraft for Windows, is not the Mac version.

How to download Minecraft Java on Linux
- Open the official Minecraft download and trial page.
- Choose the Linux download appropriate for your distribution, such as the Debian/Debian-based or Arch/Arch-based option.
- Install the package using your distribution’s normal package-management process.
- Open Minecraft Launcher, sign in, select Minecraft: Java Edition, and click Play.
There is no single Linux installation command that applies to every distribution. Use the package format and installation method supported by your Linux distribution rather than copying a command intended for a different system.
Do you need to install Java separately?
Usually, no. For a normal installation, use the official Minecraft Launcher and let it manage the game’s required runtime. Do not download random Java runtime files or Minecraft installers from third-party sites just to install vanilla Java Edition.

The Launcher download is free, but downloading the Launcher does not give you unrestricted ownership of the game. Full Java Edition access normally requires buying or redeeming Minecraft.

- Open the official free-trial page.
- Choose the Java Edition download for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Install and open Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account that does not own the game.
- Start the trial from the Launcher.
The trial provides approximately 100 minutes of in-game time, or about five in-game days. It includes the core Survival experience, but normal online multiplayer servers are disabled. LAN multiplayer is allowed according to the official trial information. It is not a permanent free copy.
How to buy and activate Minecraft Java
If you do not own the game, purchase Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC through the official Minecraft or Microsoft/Xbox store using the Microsoft account you intend to keep using.
- Sign in to the account before checkout, or create one.
- Complete the purchase or redeem your code.
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign in with that exact account.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Click Play to install and launch it.
Regional pricing, taxes, payment options, and store availability vary by country. Check the live checkout page for the current price rather than relying on an old guide.
How to reinstall Minecraft Java on another computer
You generally do not need to buy Minecraft again for a new computer if you already own the PC game. Install the official Launcher on the new Windows PC, Mac, or Linux computer and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the original purchase. Select Java Edition and click Play.

Java cross-play is limited to Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Java and Bedrock are separate game environments: owning both on Windows does not allow a Java player to join a Bedrock-only server. Java also does not currently provide native controller support.

The game does not appear after purchase
- Sign out of Minecraft Launcher.
- Close it completely and reopen it.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used at checkout.
- Check the account’s owned-games library.
- Confirm that you bought Minecraft for PC, not Dungeons, Legends, or a console/mobile product.
If the transaction is missing from the correct account, contact official Minecraft or Microsoft billing support. Do not buy the game a second time before checking the account.
The Launcher will not install
Update Windows or macOS, restart the computer, and try the other official installation route: Minecraft.net instead of the Microsoft Store, or the Microsoft Store instead of Minecraft.net. Check available storage and permissions, repair or remove an incomplete Launcher installation, and review security-software logs for a blocked installer. Download only from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store.
Java launches but runs poorly
Update your operating system and graphics drivers, then test an unmodified installation. Lower render distance and graphics settings, temporarily remove mods and resource packs, and check whether the computer meets the current requirements. Integrated graphics, low memory, excessive render distance, and hardware below the current minimum can all reduce performance. Meeting the minimum target does not guarantee 60 FPS; the listed minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS using Fast settings.

You cannot play with console friends
This is normally an edition mismatch rather than a download failure. Console and mobile players generally use Bedrock Edition, while Java multiplayer is for Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Choose the edition used by the server or your friends.
You found an old Mojang-account migration guide
Mojang-to-Microsoft account migration ended on December 18, 2023. Current installations use Microsoft accounts; migration is no longer an available step.
Should you use a third-party Minecraft Launcher?
You do not need one to download or play unmodified Java Edition. The official Launcher is the safest basic route for installation, updates, and account sign-in. Third-party launchers may be useful for advanced mod management, but they are separate tools and should not replace the official download source without a specific reason. Avoid cracked Launchers and unofficial mirrors, which add malware, account-theft, copyright, and update risks.
