Yes—you can download an SRT subtitle file by right-clicking a local movie in Windows 10 or Windows 11. The documented method uses SubiT: install it, open the folder containing your video, right-click the file, choose SubiT, and let the search window download a matching subtitle beside the movie. You can then load that SRT in your media player.
This is a sidecar-file workflow for videos stored on your computer. It does not export subtitles from Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Viu, or similar services, where captions normally remain inside the service’s player or offline app.

On Windows, SubiT adds a subtitle-search command to supported video files in File Explorer. The standard workflow downloads an SRT file into the same folder as the movie.
- Download and install SubiT. Complete the installer and allow its File Explorer integration when prompted.
- Open the movie’s folder. Work from the actual folder containing the video rather than a shortcut or a search result.
- Select the video file. The documented default associations cover MP4, MKV, AVI and WMV.
- Right-click the file and choose SubiT. On Windows 11, you may need to select Show more options first if the command is not in the compact menu.
- Wait for the search and download window to finish. SubiT saves the resulting subtitle as an SRT beside the source video.
- Load the SRT in your player. Many players detect a sidecar subtitle automatically when its base filename matches the video; otherwise use the player’s Open subtitle or equivalent command.
An SRT is a text file containing numbered caption blocks, timecodes and dialogue. It does not alter or re-encode the movie, so you can replace it with a better match without touching the video itself.

Which video extensions does SubiT support, and how can I add another?
The documented default associations are MP4, MKV, AVI and WMV. If your file uses a different extension, add it in SubiT rather than renaming the video.
- Open SubiT’s settings.
- Go to Context Menu.
- Enable Associate extensions.
- Add the extension used by your files, then save the setting.
- Close and reopen the File Explorer window if the new command does not appear immediately.
Association controls which file types receive the right-click command; it does not guarantee that a provider has a subtitle for every format or release. The subtitle search still depends on the movie’s title, edition and available language.

How does automatic subtitle matching work?
Automatic matching uses information from the filename and, where supported, a file hash to find candidate subtitles. Treat the first result as a candidate, not proof that the timing and release are correct.
Check the movie identity before downloading
- Use a clear filename containing the title and, for a film, the release year when known.
- Keep edition information such as WEB-DL, Blu-ray, Extended or a regional cut when it is present.
- Remove unrelated words such as a personal folder label that could confuse a title search.
- When automatic matching is uncertain, use SubiT’s manual movie-title search instead of accepting an ambiguous result.
Choose language and provider deliberately
SubiT supports provider selection and multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Arabic and Hebrew. Select the language before downloading when the interface offers that filter. A provider may list several versions of the same language, so compare the release labels rather than choosing only by language.
Verify synchronization in playback
Play a scene with clearly spoken dialogue near the beginning, middle and end of the movie. If the captions consistently lead or lag, the file may belong to a different release, frame rate or edit. Search again and choose the candidate whose name most closely matches the video; a hash or name match is useful evidence, but playback is the final check.

What should I do if the SubiT command is missing?
A missing command usually means the extension is not associated, the shell integration was not installed, or File Explorer has not refreshed its context-menu registration.
- Check the extension. Confirm that the file is MP4, MKV, AVI or WMV, or add its extension under Settings → Context Menu → Associate extensions.
- Use the expanded Windows 11 menu. Right-click, choose Show more options, and look for SubiT there.
- Restart File Explorer. Close all Explorer windows and reopen the folder. A full Windows sign-out can refresh a stale shell entry.
- Confirm installation scope. If the installer offered a context-menu integration option, run the installer again and enable it.
- Test a local file. Network locations, cloud placeholders and removable drives can behave differently from a locally available video.
If the command appears but no result is saved, check that the folder is writable and that security software has not blocked SubiT’s network request or file creation. Do not disable protection permanently; use your security product’s event log to identify what was blocked.
Why is the downloaded subtitle out of sync?
Synchronization depends on the exact video release, not just the film title. A subtitle timed for a theatrical cut may drift against an extended edition, and a file prepared for one frame rate can become progressively early or late on another.
- Compare the video filename with the subtitle result, including edition, source and release-group details when shown.
- Try another result for the same language and provider.
- Check synchronization at the beginning and near the end. A constant offset can often be corrected with the player’s subtitle-delay control; increasing drift indicates a release or frame-rate mismatch and is better solved by downloading another file.
- Keep only the verified SRT beside the movie, or give alternatives distinct names so your player does not load the wrong one automatically.
VLC’s subtitle-search guidance follows the same principle: search by hash or name, choose the result whose name most closely matches the video, download it, and test synchronization during playback.
What filename should the SRT use?
For reliable sidecar discovery, keep the SRT in the same folder and use the same base filename as the movie. For example, Film.Title.2024.mkv and Film.Title.2024.srt form a predictable pair. If you keep language variants, append a language code such as .en.srt or .es.srt only when your player recognizes that convention; otherwise load the desired file manually.

Which subtitle-downloading method is best for different users?
The right choice depends on whether you want a Windows context menu, batch processing, in-player searching or a mobile workflow.

Choose SubiT when the key requirement is “right-click a local movie.” Choose Subsearch when you want automatic, manual and hybrid search modes in a Windows desktop app. Choose subgrab when repeatable directory or batch commands matter. Use VLC’s search while you are already watching, and use the Android option when the work must happen on a phone or tablet.
How do I download subtitles directly in VLC?
VLC with its subtitle-search function is useful when you do not want to leave the player. Search by the file hash or by name, review the returned candidates, select the closest release match, download it and watch a short section to confirm timing. Keep the downloaded subtitle with the video if you want it available the next time you open the file.
This route can be faster than a context menu when you are already watching, but it does not remove the need to compare release details. If the captions are wrong, download a different result rather than repeatedly changing delay values to compensate for a mismatched edit.

Usually not as an exportable SRT. Services such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Viu generally keep subtitle tracks inside their web player or official offline app. Use the service’s own subtitle control, and check its language and accessibility settings.

Do not use a third-party downloader to bypass access controls or extract a track that the service does not provide for export. A local video file that you own or are permitted to use is a different case: a sidecar SRT can be downloaded and loaded without modifying the video.
Are downloaded subtitle files safe and legal?
Subtitle files are small text documents, but the sites distributing them can still present misleading download buttons, malicious installers or files timed for another release. Prefer a clearly identified subtitle project or an established player integration, inspect the downloaded filename and extension, and scan unexpected archives or executables before opening them.
Copyright and licensing also vary by country and title. A subtitle may be distributed without the rights holder’s permission even when it contains only translated dialogue. Use subtitles you are authorized to obtain, and avoid packages that bundle an executable, browser extension or “codec” with an SRT.
How do subtitles improve accessibility?
Subtitles help viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing, people watching in noisy or quiet environments, language learners and audiences who do not understand the spoken language. What can an Android subtitle app do that a Windows context menu cannot?
The documented Android option can search for and download SRT files, generate subtitles from a video’s audio, translate them with a premium AI feature and burn captions permanently into the video. Burn-in is useful when the destination player cannot load sidecar files, but it creates a new video and makes the captions difficult to remove or restyle.
For a Windows movie that already has a usable subtitle online, a sidecar SRT is normally the least destructive choice. Generate or burn subtitles only when searching providers fails, when you need a translated track, or when the final playback device lacks subtitle support.

Can I keep several language subtitles for one movie?
Yes. Store each SRT beside the video with distinct language suffixes, such as .en.srt and .es.srt, then select the desired track in your player. If automatic discovery loads only one file, open the others manually.
Should I open an SRT file in a text editor before using it?
You can inspect it as plain text to confirm the language, cue numbers and timecodes. Do not run a subtitle download that arrives as an executable, script or unexpected installer; an ordinary SRT should be a text document.
Why are subtitles unavailable for a very new movie?
A provider may not yet have a timed release for the exact edition, or the title may be listed under an alternate transliteration. Try a manual title search and check again later, while avoiding files whose release description does not match your video.
