How to Download PDFs Instead of Previewing Them in Chrome and Firefox

If Chrome or Firefox opens a PDF in a browser tab when you want a file saved on your computer, change the browser’s built-in PDF action. In desktop Chrome, open More → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → PDF documents, then select Download PDFs. In Firefox, open Settings → General → Applications (shown as Files and applications in Mozilla’s help), find Portable Document Format (PDF), and select Save File.

These preferences control what the browser does when a site presents a PDF for download. You do not need to install a separate PDF application just to make either browser save the file. If one site still behaves differently in Firefox, the website’s content type may be responsible.

How do I make Chrome download PDFs instead of previewing them?

Chrome has a PDF-specific preference with two choices: Download PDFs saves the document to your device, while Open PDFs in Chrome displays it in a browser tab. The setting is available in the desktop version of Chrome through the following path.

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Select the three-dot More menu in the upper-right corner.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Open Privacy and security.
  5. Select Site settings.
  6. Expand Additional content settings.
  7. Choose PDF documents.
  8. Select Download PDFs.

After this change, selecting a PDF link should trigger a download rather than opening the document in Chrome’s built-in viewer. Google describes this control as the choice between PDFs downloading to your device and opening in Chrome; its current instructions are on the Chrome Help page for downloading files.

How do I choose where Chrome saves the PDF?

The PDF preference determines whether Chrome downloads or previews the file. The destination and prompt are separate controls under Settings → Downloads.

  • Use the default download-location control to select the folder Chrome uses for downloaded files.
  • Turn on the option that asks where to save each file if you want to choose a folder and filename for every PDF.

This separation matters when troubleshooting: a PDF can be downloading correctly while simply being saved to a folder you did not expect. Check Chrome’s download history to see the file’s recorded location and status.

Why does a downloaded Chrome PDF open by itself?

Chrome can be configured to open a downloaded file automatically after saving it. If that happens, open the recent download history, locate the PDF or another file of the same type, and clear Always open files of this type if it is selected. Google specifically recommends checking this box when a file opens automatically after download.

Clearing that automatic-open choice does not switch Chrome back to browser preview. The PDF behavior still follows the separate PDF documents preference, so leave Download PDFs selected when your goal is to save the file.

How do I make Firefox save PDFs instead of opening them?

Firefox assigns an action to each content type. For PDFs, the download action is called Save File. Mozilla’s current help describes the controls under Settings → General → Applications; the section is labeled Files and applications in the help documentation.

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Open the application menu and choose Settings.
  3. Select General.
  4. Scroll to Applications, or the Files and applications area.
  5. Find Portable Document Format (PDF) in the list of content types.
  6. Open the action menu for PDF files.
  7. Select Save File.

With Save File assigned, Firefox treats a PDF link that is presented as a downloadable file as a download. You can then use Firefox’s normal download controls to open the saved file’s folder or manage the file.

What are Firefox’s other PDF actions?

The PDF action menu can include several choices, each intended for a different workflow:

  • Save File downloads the PDF to your chosen download location.
  • Open in Firefox displays the PDF in Firefox’s built-in viewer.
  • Always ask prompts you to choose an action each time Firefox handles a PDF link as a download.
  • An available system or application handler passes the file to a PDF-capable program installed on the computer.

Choose Save File when downloading should be the default. Choose Always ask when the preferred action changes from one document to the next. Mozilla documents these actions in Manage file types and download actions in Firefox.

Why can a Firefox PDF ignore the setting?

Firefox does not decide only from the filename or the visible “PDF” link text. The web server supplies a media type, also called a MIME type or content type, and Firefox uses that information to determine which action to apply. Mozilla warns that a misconfigured server content type can make Firefox handle a file incorrectly.

This creates a useful diagnostic distinction:

  • If PDFs from many unrelated sites behave the same way, review the PDF action in Settings → General → Applications.
  • If the preference is correct but one particular site downloads or opens unexpectedly, test a PDF from another site. A difference limited to one website points toward that site’s supplied content type rather than a global Firefox preference.
  • If a site consistently labels a PDF with the wrong content type, changing Firefox’s general PDF action may not correct that individual link. The site operator would need to serve the file with the appropriate type.

Mozilla’s explanation of this dependency appears in its support article on file types and download actions. The setting still matters, but it can only be applied reliably when the website identifies the file correctly.

What is the difference between Chrome and Firefox PDF download settings?

Both browsers can save PDFs without an extra PDF reader, but they expose the choice differently. Chrome presents a dedicated PDF preference; Firefox places PDF alongside other content types and assigns an action to it.

Browser Where the control lives Download choice Preview choice Important behavior
Chrome More → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → PDF documents Download PDFs Open PDFs in Chrome Download location and the prompt for each file are configured separately under Settings → Downloads.
Firefox Settings → General → Applications (Files and applications) Save File Open in Firefox The website’s supplied MIME or content type can affect which action Firefox applies.

The labels are not interchangeable. Selecting Save File is the Firefox equivalent of selecting Download PDFs in Chrome, while Open in Firefox corresponds to Chrome’s Open PDFs in Chrome.

What should I check when a PDF still opens in a browser tab?

Work through the checks for the browser you are using instead of changing unrelated download settings.

Chrome checklist

  1. Return to Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → PDF documents.
  2. Confirm that Download PDFs, not Open PDFs in Chrome, is selected.
  3. Open Settings → Downloads and verify that Chrome is saving to a known folder.
  4. Check recent download history to determine whether the file downloaded even if a viewer appeared afterward.
  5. If the file opens automatically after saving, clear Always open files of this type from the download history.

Firefox checklist

  1. Open Settings → General → Applications and locate Portable Document Format (PDF).
  2. Confirm that its action is Save File.
  3. Try a PDF link from a different website to separate a browser-wide preference problem from a site-specific one.
  4. If only one site behaves incorrectly, consider that its server may be sending an unexpected content type.

A browser setting cannot correct every server-side error. When a single website is the outlier, retaining the correct browser preference and reporting the behavior to that site is more effective than repeatedly changing the global setting.

How can I switch back to previewing PDFs?

You can reverse the preference whenever previewing is more convenient than keeping local copies.

  • In Chrome, follow the same path to PDF documents and select Open PDFs in Chrome.
  • In Firefox, return to Portable Document Format (PDF) under Applications and select Open in Firefox.

Firefox’s Always ask option is useful when neither behavior should be permanent: it lets you decide for each downloadable PDF whether to save it or open it with an available handler.

Do I need a separate PDF reader to download the file?

No. The download decision is built into both browsers. Chrome can save the PDF with Download PDFs, and Firefox can save it with Save File, without requiring a separate PDF application for that step.

A separate application may still be relevant later if you want to edit, annotate, or otherwise process the saved document, but installing one is not a prerequisite for changing the browser’s download behavior.

Which setting should you use?

Choose the browser action that matches what you do with the document immediately after clicking the link:

  • Use Chrome’s Download PDFs or Firefox’s Save File when you need a local copy, want to keep the file for offline use, or plan to organize it in a folder.
  • Use Chrome’s Open PDFs in Chrome or Firefox’s Open in Firefox when you only need to read the document and do not want an extra saved copy.
  • Use Firefox’s Always ask when your choice depends on the specific document.

Remember that a browser preference governs the browser’s handling of a correctly identified PDF. Firefox may still react differently when a website sends an incorrect or unusual content type, so compare another site before assuming the setting failed.

Where can I verify the official instructions?

Google’s current path and the distinction between downloading and opening in Chrome are documented in Download a file – Computer. Mozilla’s actions, including Save File, Open in Firefox, and Always ask, are documented in Manage file types and download actions in Firefox.

For examples of the opposite problem—PDF links downloading when a reader expected an in-browser preview—see the explanations from Virginia Defense Force and ClassReach. Those cases describe the same browser controls from the reverse direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make Firefox prompt me for every PDF?

Yes. In Firefox’s PDF entry under Settings → General → Applications, choose Always ask instead of Save File or Open in Firefox. Firefox will then present an action choice whenever it treats the link as a downloadable PDF.

Why does a PDF from one website act differently from PDFs elsewhere?

Compare the same browser setting with a PDF hosted on another site. If the difference occurs only on one site, the server may be supplying a different MIME or content type, which can change Firefox’s handling even when your preference is correct.

What if Chrome downloads the PDF but I cannot find it?

Open Chrome’s recent download history to see the file entry and its location. If the folder is inconvenient, change the destination under Settings → Downloads or enable the option that asks where to save each file.

Can I preview a PDF after setting Chrome to download it?

Yes. You can open the saved file from your operating system after downloading, or return to Chrome’s PDF documents setting and choose Open PDFs in Chrome when you prefer in-browser viewing.
