To install a Windows 7 federated search connector, obtain a trusted OpenSearch Description file with the .osdx extension, open it, and accept Windows’ registration prompt. Windows creates a .searchconnector-ms file under %USERPROFILE%Searches, adds a shortcut under %USERPROFILE%Links, and exposes the remote search location in Windows Explorer. The file is only a connection description: it does not guarantee that the remote service still exists, accepts the old query format, or returns usable results.
Most connector lists found online are historical. Check the service endpoint and the file’s provenance before installing it, particularly because many Windows 7-era downloads have disappeared.

Federated search lets Windows 7 search a compatible remote repository or web service from Windows Explorer, alongside searches of the local computer. Microsoft describes the feature as a way to search beyond the user’s own PC. A remote provider exposes an OpenSearch-compatible query template and returns results in RSS or Atom; Windows uses that response to display remote results in Explorer.
The connector is not a conventional application. It is a small description that tells Windows where and how to send a search. Microsoft designed the feature so a compatible service could be connected without deploying client-side Windows code. That distinction matters when evaluating old downloads: registering a connector can succeed even when the website behind it has been retired.

What file do I need to download?
The normal download is an OpenSearch Description file ending in .osdx. Opening that file is the registration step. Windows reads the description and creates its local connector file, which uses the .searchconnector-ms extension.
A valid file should come from the service owner, your administrator, or another source you can verify. A page that merely lists a connector name is not enough evidence that the file still works. The remote service must still provide the documented OpenSearch endpoint and a compatible response format.

For an individual Windows 7 computer, installation is short, but verify the source before opening the file.
- Obtain the
.osdxfile. Download it from the service provider or receive it from an administrator. Do not assume a file preserved on a third-party archive is current. - Open the file. Double-click the
.osdxfile in Windows Explorer. Windows should recognize it as an OpenSearch description and ask whether you want to add the search provider. - Confirm registration. Accept the prompt only after checking the filename and source. Windows registers the remote data store and generates the local connector.
- Find the connector in Explorer. Look in the Explorer navigation area and Favorites pane. Windows also creates a shortcut in
%USERPROFILE%Links. - Run a test query. Open the new search location, enter a distinctive term, and wait for remote results. A successful registration proves only that Windows accepted the description; it does not prove that the endpoint is online.
If the file opens in a text editor instead of triggering registration, its extension may have been changed during download. Confirm that the complete filename ends in .osdx, not .osdx.txt, and download it again from a trusted source if necessary.
Where does Windows store the generated connector?
Windows creates the registered connector as a .searchconnector-ms file in the current user’s %USERPROFILE%Searches folder. It also creates a shortcut in %USERPROFILE%Links, which is why the location can appear in Explorer’s navigation or Favorites area without installing a separate program.
These files describe the connection on that Windows profile. Copying a connector to another computer is not a substitute for checking the remote service, its authentication requirements, and the receiving user’s permissions.

How can I find a connector that still works?
Start with the service owner or an internal administrator, not a random “connector pack.” A current provider can confirm the endpoint, the query syntax, required authentication, and whether Windows 7 is still supported. If no provider-supplied file exists, an IT team may create one from the service’s OpenSearch description and distribute it through an approved channel.
Historical pages can help identify what once existed, but they are not a current catalog. A 2009 article from TheWindowsClub listed examples for Live Search, Microsoft Support, DeviantArt, Google, MSDN, Wikipedia, YouTube, Flickr, Google Blog Search, Twitter, Yahoo, and The Windows Club. That list does not verify that any connector file still resolves or that those services still accept the old query format.
The Legacy Update listing for the 2009 Windows 7 Federated Search Provider Implementer’s Guide reports that Microsoft’s download was deleted and that no file was found in the referenced Wayback archive. Microsoft Learn still documents federated search and refers to an OpenSearch sample, but the survival of each historical package remains unconfirmed.
What must the remote service support?
A connector works only when the remote service meets Windows 7’s documented protocol expectations. Check these requirements before troubleshooting the desktop:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- OpenSearch query template: the connector passes the user’s terms through a URL template supplied by the service.
- RSS or Atom results: the endpoint must return a feed format that Windows can parse into Explorer results.
- No POST dependency: the documented federated-search feature does not send POST requests. A service that requires a POST-only search workflow is incompatible with this connector model.
- Reachable endpoint: DNS, firewall, proxy, TLS, and the service’s own availability must allow the Windows 7 computer to reach the search URL.
- Compatible authentication: the server and client must agree on an authentication method supported by the Windows installation.
These conditions are independent. A service can expose an OpenSearch description yet fail because its result feed is no longer RSS or Atom, because it now requires POST, or because an authentication policy changed.
Which authentication methods are supported?
Microsoft’s data-store guidance lists NTLM, Kerberos, Basic authentication over HTTPS, and other installed Security Support Providers as possible authentication mechanisms. The exact choice depends on the remote service and the Windows 7 environment.

Basic authentication should be used only over HTTPS so credentials are protected in transit. In an organization, confirm whether the connector is expected to use the logged-on user’s Windows credentials, a service account, or a separate prompt. A connector description cannot bypass a server policy that blocks the selected method.
How do administrators deploy connectors?
Organizations can let users install a connector themselves or push it centrally. Microsoft documents both approaches.
Pull deployment
In a pull model, an administrator or service owner gives users a webpage link or an email attachment containing the .osdx file. Users open the file and Windows generates the connector in their own profile. This is simple for a small audience, but it depends on users installing the same approved version and reporting failures.
Push deployment
For managed computers, administrators can distribute the connector with Group Policy Preferences, logon scripts, roaming profiles, or a machine-imaging process. Push deployment is preferable when every workstation needs the same search location or when the organization must control provenance and timing.
If a web server hosts the download, configure the server to return the MIME type application/opensearchdescription+xml for .osdx files. An incorrect content type can cause a browser to display or rename the file instead of offering it as a connector.
Plan for endpoint changes
Deployment tools distribute the description; they do not keep the remote service alive. Maintain an inventory of the endpoint, authentication method, owner, and date it was last tested. When a provider changes its URL or response format, update the description and redeploy it rather than repeatedly reinstalling an unchanged file.

How do I troubleshoot a connector that does not work?
Use the symptom to separate a local registration problem from a remote protocol problem.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Double-clicking does nothing | The file is not associated with Windows Search, has the wrong extension, or is blocked by policy. | Confirm the complete .osdx extension, retry from Windows Explorer, and ask the administrator whether file-association or attachment policies block it. |
| The connector appears, but returns no results | The endpoint is offline, the query template is obsolete, or the response is not a supported RSS/Atom feed. | Ask the service owner for a current endpoint and test whether it still accepts the connector’s URL-based query. |
| A login prompt repeats | The selected authentication method is unsupported, credentials are rejected, or the server requires a different Security Support Provider. | Verify the server’s NTLM, Kerberos, Basic-over-HTTPS, or other SSP requirement and confirm that the Windows account has access. |
| Results fail only on a corporate network | A proxy, firewall, TLS inspection device, or outbound policy is blocking the remote URL. | Have network staff check access to the endpoint and review proxy or firewall logs without weakening security controls. |
| The browser downloads a text file | The web server sends the wrong MIME type or the browser altered the filename. | Serve the file as application/opensearchdescription+xml and verify that the saved name ends in .osdx. |
Do not treat an empty result page as proof that Windows Search is broken. First establish whether the remote service answers a direct, correctly formed OpenSearch request and returns the expected feed format.
Should I use a historical connector download?
Only when you can verify both provenance and current service compatibility. The practical decision is less about the connector’s age than about whether its endpoint, protocol, and authentication still match Windows 7.
| Option | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
Provider-supplied .osdx |
Connecting to a service that still documents Windows 7 or OpenSearch support. | The provider may have changed the endpoint without updating old files. |
| Administrator-supplied connector | Managed environments where identity, deployment, and support are controlled internally. | A stale internal package can be distributed widely before anyone notices the endpoint changed. |
| Archived third-party download | Investigating a legacy system that cannot be replaced. | Unknown provenance, retired services, altered files, and obsolete query formats. |
| Custom connector based on current service documentation | A service still exposes a compatible OpenSearch template but has no packaged download. | Requires technical ownership, testing, and ongoing maintenance. |
When comparing two connectors, evaluate service availability, protocol compatibility, authentication, deployment control, and trust in the file’s source. A connector that scores well on only one of those axes is not a dependable installation choice.
Can developers create a Windows 7 federated search connector?
Yes. Microsoft’s documented pattern is to create an .osdx description for a compatible remote service, provide it to users, and optionally deploy the generated connector throughout an enterprise. The description must identify an OpenSearch URL template that accepts the user’s terms and returns RSS or Atom results.
- Document the service contract. Record the query URL template, result format, authentication method, and whether the endpoint is available to the intended users.
- Create and validate the OpenSearch description. Ensure the template uses the service’s current URL syntax and does not depend on POST requests.
- Test with a least-privilege account. Confirm that an ordinary user receives parseable results and that unauthorized data is not exposed.
- Distribute the
.osdxfile. Use a controlled webpage, email process, Group Policy Preferences, logon script, roaming profile, or image, depending on the environment. - Monitor for service changes. Re-test after endpoint, authentication, TLS, or feed-format changes and retire the connector if the service is no longer compatible.
Microsoft Learn’s federated-search documentation includes the implementation model and points to an OpenSearch code sample. Availability of older guide downloads should be treated separately from the continuing presence of the documentation.

What are the security checks before opening an old connector?
- Obtain the file from the service owner or a trusted administrator whenever possible.
- Check that the filename and extension are exactly what you expect.
- Inspect the destination and authentication behavior before entering credentials.
- Prefer HTTPS when credentials or private search results are involved.
- Do not grant broader network or account permissions merely to make an obsolete connector work.
- Remove connectors that point to retired services or unrecognized domains.
A connector is configuration, not executable client software, but it still directs Windows to a remote endpoint and can expose search terms or result metadata. Treat its destination and authentication requirements as security-relevant.
What should you expect from Windows 7 federated search in 2026?
Expect a legacy feature with uneven availability. The Windows 7 client can still register a correctly formatted connector, but many services and download pages from the Windows 7 era have changed or vanished. Current Microsoft documentation explains the architecture; it does not certify every historical connector package or remote endpoint.
Recommended Free Tools
For a one-off legacy system, a verified provider file may be sufficient. For an organization, document ownership, test the endpoint, deploy through a controlled method, and maintain a removal plan. If no current service owner can confirm compatibility, do not present an old connector list as a working download catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open an .osdx file on a non-administrator account?
Registration is associated with the Windows user profile, so an administrator is not inherently required for the per-user installation route. Enterprise policies can still restrict file associations, downloads, or search-provider registration, in which case an administrator must handle deployment.
How can I tell whether a connector is sending my searches to the expected server?
Have an administrator or security team inspect the OpenSearch URL template in the description and compare its host with the service owner’s documented domain. Network logs can then confirm the destination without disclosing search terms in an article or support ticket.
Will a connector keep working if the website changes its normal search page?
Not necessarily. Federated search uses the endpoint and response format encoded in the connector, so a redesigned website can leave the connector broken even when ordinary browser searches still work.
What should an organization record for each deployed connector?
Keep the file’s source, endpoint owner, authentication method, deployment date, last successful test, and planned retirement contact. That inventory makes it possible to remove stale connectors quickly when a service or credential policy changes.
