To host a modded Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 server, install Java SE 17, create a server for the same loader and Minecraft version as the modpack, run it once, set eula=true in eula.txt, allocate suitable memory, and forward TCP port 25565 if people outside your home network will connect. What you need before installing
Prepare these items before creating the server directory:
- A computer that can remain powered on while people play. It must have enough free RAM and storage for the world, logs, backups and downloaded mods.
- Java SE 17 installed on the operating system. Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 lists Java 17 as the minimum. Do not assume the Java bundled with a game launcher is available to a standalone server.
- The exact modpack name, Minecraft version, loader (Forge or Fabric), loader build requested by the pack, and any server files supplied by its author.
- Router access if players outside your local network need to join. The normal Minecraft server port is TCP 25565.
- A separate folder for the server. Keeping server files out of the client installation makes backups, upgrades and troubleshooting safer.
Check the pack’s documentation first. Some packs include a Windows run.bat, a Linux/macOS start.sh, configuration files and a curated server download. In that case, use those files rather than replacing them with a generic launcher command.

Install and verify Java 17
Open a terminal or Command Prompt and run:
java -versionThe output should identify a 17.x runtime. The server uses the Java installed on the machine, not a launcher’s private runtime. If the command is not found, install a 64-bit Java SE 17 distribution, reopen the terminal, and run the check again. On a machine with several Java versions, use the operating system’s Java selection tools or an absolute path in your start script so the server consistently uses 17.
Some community reports describe startup errors with JDK 22 on Forge 1.20.1, while other guides mention Java 21. Those reports are not a blanket compatibility guarantee. Use Java 17 unless the specific pack documentation names another tested version; changing Java is one of the first troubleshooting steps when a newly installed server exits immediately.

Forge and Fabric are different mod-loading platforms. A Forge pack requires a Forge server; a Fabric pack requires a Fabric server. Neither loader can substitute for the other, and a 1.20.1 pack must not be pointed at a 1.20.2, 1.20.4 or other-version server.

Download the loader and mods from their official project pages or the distribution named by the pack author. Exact installer and loader build numbers change, so verify that the selected build explicitly supports Minecraft 1.20.1.
Forge 1.20.1 server setup
- Create the folder. Make a new directory such as
Minecraft-1.20.1-Forge. Avoid a path that is synchronized or aggressively scanned by backup software while the server is running. - Run the Forge installer. Choose the server-install option, select the new directory, and let the installer download the required vanilla and Forge files. If the installer offers a choice of Forge builds, use the build specified by the modpack.
- Copy the pack’s server files. If the author supplies a server download, merge it into this folder as instructed. Keep the supplied configuration files, scripts and mod versions together.
- Start once. Run the generated Windows script or Linux/macOS script. The first launch normally creates configuration files and then stops because the EULA has not been accepted.
- Accept the EULA. Open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save it, and restart the same script. - Install mods. Put only Forge-compatible server mods in
mods. A mod that is marked client-only, such as a rendering or HUD enhancement, generally stays on players’ computers and should not be forced onto the dedicated server.
Modern Forge installations often manage the correct libraries and class path through their generated script. Starting an arbitrary jar instead of that script can omit required arguments and produce misleading “missing class” or dependency errors.

Fabric 1.20.1 server setup
- Create a clean directory. Use a separate folder for this Fabric instance so its world and configuration cannot be confused with a Forge installation.
- Install the server. Open the Fabric installer, select Server, choose Minecraft 1.20.1 and the loader version required by the pack, then select the folder.
- Add Fabric API. Place the matching Fabric API jar in the server’s
modsdirectory. Many Fabric mods depend on it; a pack’s server bundle may already contain it. - Copy the modpack. Add the server-side and common mods supplied for the exact pack version. Do not copy a client-only collection blindly.
- Launch once and edit the EULA. Start the generated launcher, open
eula.txtafter it stops, seteula=true, save, and launch again. - Use the generated launcher. A typical Fabric installation may use a file named
fabric-server-launch.jar. If you need a direct command, an example isjava -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui; change the memory values to suit the pack and retain any arguments supplied by its documentation.
If Fabric reports a missing dependency, read the first error naming a mod and install the required version for 1.20.1. Do not solve a dependency error by downloading a similarly named mod for another Minecraft version.

After accepting the EULA, allow the server to finish generating its world. Stop it with the console stop command before editing files. Important files include:
server.properties— port, difficulty, game mode, view distance, simulation distance, online-mode and other server settings.ops.json— operator permissions. Grant operator status only to trusted accounts.whitelist.json— an allow-list for private servers. Enable the whitelist in the console or properties file, then add player names.world(or the configured level name) — the generated world. Never copy or delete it while the server is running.logs/latest.log— the first place to inspect a crash, failed mod load or connection problem.
The official Minecraft EULA permits installing server software to host online play. It also places conditions on distributing modified server software; mods are a separate category. Read the current EULA before redistributing a complete server package.
Allocate RAM deliberately
The Minecraft Wiki lists 1 GB as a basic server allocation and gives an example using -Xmn 128M -Xmx1G. Its setup tutorial recommends at least 2 GB for a small server. Modded instances usually need more, but there is no reliable “RAM per mod” formula: world size, entity counts, generation, view distance, player count and the behavior of individual mods matter as much as the mod count.

java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui-Xms is the initial heap and -Xmx is the maximum. Some guides set them equal to reduce heap resizing; doing so reserves that memory immediately, so leave the operating system and other applications adequate headroom. Never allocate more RAM than the machine can sustain without swapping.
Increase memory only after checking the symptom. A crash mentioning an out-of-memory condition supports a larger heap or a mod investigation. Long pauses with a healthy heap can instead indicate CPU limits, chunk generation or an overloaded disk. More RAM cannot fix an incompatible mod.
Start scripts for Windows and Linux
Windows
Use the run.bat supplied by Forge, Fabric or the modpack whenever one exists. To add memory, edit the script’s existing -Xms and -Xmx values rather than deleting its loader arguments. Add pause at the end only while diagnosing a window that closes immediately, so the error remains visible.
Linux or macOS
Run the supplied start.sh. If the script is not executable, grant permission with:

A terminal multiplexer or service manager can keep the process attached after you disconnect, but configure automatic restarts carefully: a broken configuration should not be restarted in a rapid loop.

Safe shutdown
Type save-all if you want an explicit save, then stop. Killing the process or closing the terminal can corrupt chunks and lose player progress.
Install the correct client and server mods
Every player needs the same Minecraft version, loader family, loader-compatible mod versions and pack configuration. A client with an extra content mod may fail to connect or create a different gameplay state. A server with a client-only visual mod may fail during startup.

Keep a written pack version or export file for the group. When updating, back up the world, test the new set in a copy, and have every player update before opening the public server.
Make the server reachable on port 25565
- Give the host a stable local address. Create a DHCP reservation in the router or configure a suitable static address so a reboot does not invalidate the forwarding rule.
- Allow the Java process through the host firewall. Permit inbound TCP 25565 on the network profile you actually use. Do not disable the firewall globally.
- Create the router rule. Forward external TCP port 25565 to the host’s local IP and port 25565. UDP is not required for ordinary Java server connections.
- Leave
server-port=25565unless you have a reason to change it. If you choose another port, forward that port and tell players to include it after the address. - Test from outside the home network. A friend on another connection is a better test than entering the public address from inside the same router, because some routers do not support hairpin NAT.
Players on the same home network can usually connect with the host’s local IP. Remote players use the public address and port. If the router has carrier-grade NAT, double NAT or an ISP policy that blocks inbound connections, ordinary forwarding may not work; ask the ISP for a public IPv4 address or use a documented tunnel or virtual-network solution instead.
Never publish the server’s administrative credentials. Use whitelist and operator controls, keep the operating system and Java patched, and take offline backups before changing mods or generating new terrain.

Self-hosting versus a managed server

The modpack still determines the loader, Java requirement and RAM in either arrangement. A rented machine does not make an incompatible mod list compatible.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The window closes immediately
- Run the script from a terminal so the error remains visible.
- Confirm
java -versionreports Java 17 and that the script is using that installation. - Check that
eula.txtcontains exactlyeula=true. - Use the loader’s generated script instead of launching a jar with missing arguments.
- Read
logs/latest.logand the first “Caused by” section, not only the final stack-trace line.
Forge reports a timeout while loading
Heavy Forge packs may need longer loading and login timeouts. A secondary guide suggests adding -Dfml.readTimeout=120 -Dfml.loginTimeout=120 before the -jar argument. Treat this as a pack-specific workaround, not a universal fix; first verify Java, loader build, dependencies and available CPU.
“Missing mods” or mismatched-mod errors
Compare the server and client mod filenames and versions, including dependencies. Remove client-only files from the server, install required common files on both sides, and ensure that every jar targets Minecraft 1.20.1 and the same loader.
Players cannot connect from outside
- Confirm the server console says it is listening and that local players can connect.
- Check the host firewall and the router’s destination IP.
- Verify the public address has not changed and that the external port matches
server-port. - Investigate double NAT or carrier-grade NAT if port tests fail despite correct local settings.
Lag, freezes or watchdog crashes
Use the log timestamps to correlate lag with chunk generation, entity-heavy areas or a particular mod. Lower view and simulation distance, limit exploration during initial world generation, remove a recently added mod in a test copy, and monitor CPU, disk and heap usage. Do not delete the world as a first response; restore a backup only after identifying which backup is safe.
Backups, updates and operating practice
- Stop the server cleanly before copying its world and configuration.
- Keep several dated backups, including one away from the host machine.
- Test a mod or loader update on a copied world first. World formats and registries can change, and downgrading after an upgrade may be unsafe.
- Record the Java version, loader build, mod list and RAM flags that produced a working instance.
- Use a whitelist for a private group and grant operator privileges sparingly.
- Review
latest.logafter updates and after unexplained disconnects.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run a 1.20.1 server with Java 21?
Compatibility reports are inconsistent. Unless the modpack author documents and tests Java 21, Java SE 17 is the safer choice for 1.20.1; a newer JDK can introduce loader or mod startup errors.
Do I need to forward a port for players in my house?
No. Players on the same local network can normally use the host computer’s private IP. Port forwarding is for connections arriving from the internet.

Why does giving the server more RAM sometimes make it worse?
A larger maximum heap cannot fix incompatible mods or CPU-bound chunk generation, and reserving too much memory can force the operating system to swap. Increase the heap only when logs and monitoring indicate memory pressure.
Can I change from Forge to Fabric without deleting the world?
Treat that as a new server instance. The loaders use different mod ecosystems and registries; back up the world, create a separate installation, and do not assume a world made with one loader will load safely with the other.
