In WordPress, make one change at a time, exclude scripts that depend on early execution, clear every cache, and verify real pages and interactions—not just the PageSpeed score.

What “render-blocking” means in WordPress
A browser cannot display a page immediately after receiving its HTML. It parses the markup into a Document Object Model (DOM) tree, discovers referenced resources, downloads them, and processes the results needed for the first paint. As Google puts it: “Before the browser can render a page it has to build the DOM tree by parsing the HTML markup.”

A synchronous script encountered while the parser is reading HTML can pause that process. The browser may need to fetch the file, wait for the response, execute it, and only then continue parsing. A script hosted on another origin can add another network round trip before anything useful appears on screen. External stylesheets create a different kind of block: the browser generally needs to download and process the CSS that determines layout and presentation before it can safely paint the page.
PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse report these files as candidates. The warning does not mean every listed resource should be disabled. A file may be required for the header, a consent dialog, a form, a shopping cart, or another behavior that must exist early. The objective is a fast, stable first render that still works, not a page with every resource moved out of the critical path regardless of consequences.

Start by finding the actual blockers
Optimization is safest when it begins with evidence from the same templates your visitors use. A home page, article, archive, landing page, and checkout can enqueue different files. Test representative URLs rather than relying on one score.
- Run PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse. Use both a logged-out mobile view and a desktop view. Record the exact JavaScript and stylesheet URLs named in the render-blocking audit.
- Group files by function. Note whether each script controls navigation, a form, consent, analytics, advertising, a slider, or a plugin feature. For stylesheets, identify global rules, typography, responsive layout, and template-specific styles.
- Check dependencies. Look for scripts that expect another script to have executed first or that must run before the first paint. Those are not safe candidates for an indiscriminate asynchronous setting.
- Choose a test page for each template. Keep a small list of URLs that exercise menus, forms, sliders, carts, dialogs, and other interactive areas. You will use the same list after every change.
Treat the audit as a shortlist for investigation. Removing a file simply because it appears in the report can replace a performance warning with a broken page.

JavaScript changes usually produce the largest functional risk because execution order matters. Decide whether a file is critical, dependency-ordered but non-critical, or fully independent before changing its loading behavior.
Use defer for scripts that can wait until parsing finishes
Deferred scripts are downloaded without stopping HTML parsing and execute after the document has been parsed. When several deferred scripts are present, their document order is preserved, which makes defer suitable for many libraries and application files that depend on one another but are not needed to construct the first visible screen.
In WordPress, this commonly includes front-end bundles, interaction code for content below the first viewport, and enhancement scripts that can initialize after the markup exists. Do not defer a file merely because it is large. Confirm that the page can render and that the file does not need to establish an early global, consent state, or other prerequisite.

Use async only when execution order does not matter
Asynchronous scripts also download without holding up HTML parsing, but they execute as soon as each file is ready. The browser does not guarantee the order in which multiple asynchronous files run. This is appropriate only when a script is independent of other scripts and no page behavior depends on a predictable sequence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Analytics or other isolated integrations may fit this model, but verify the particular implementation. If one file defines an API consumed by another, changing both to asynchronous loading can create intermittent failures: the dependent code may run before the API exists. Such failures are often missed in a single test because network timing changes from one load to the next.
Keep synchronous loading where early execution is required
Some code must remain synchronous. Examples include code required before first paint, a script that must run before later inline code, or a chain with strict dependencies that has not been adapted for deferred execution. Leaving those files blocking is preferable to breaking the page. Instead, reduce what they do, move nonessential work into a later script, or redesign the dependency chain before changing their loading attribute.
Manual enqueue and dependency control versus a plugin
| Approach | Control | Debugging effort | Breakage risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual WordPress enqueue and dependency control | Fine-grained control over individual handles, dependencies, and templates | Higher; you must identify handles, preserve dependencies, and maintain changes as themes and plugins update | Concentrated in the files you change, but mistakes can affect all pages using those handles |
| Optimization plugin | Fast site-wide or rule-based changes through documented settings and exclusions | Lower initially; higher when diagnosing interactions among many plugins, themes, caches, and inline scripts | Potentially broad because one setting can alter many files; exclusions and regression testing are essential |
Manual control is useful when you know exactly which handles belong on which templates and can maintain the code. A plugin is practical when you need repeatable processing across a complex site, provided you keep a test set and understand how to exclude sensitive files.
Deliver CSS according to visual priority
CSS is render-blocking when the browser must obtain and process an external stylesheet before it can confidently paint the page. The reliable pattern is to identify the small set of rules required for the initial viewport, inline that critical block, and load the remaining rules after the initial render.

Build a critical-CSS set for the first viewport
Critical CSS should cover the structure and appearance a visitor sees immediately: the page shell, header, primary navigation, visible typography, the first content block, and the responsive rules needed at the tested viewport. It is not a copy of the entire theme stylesheet. Keeping the inline block small limits the HTML cost and reduces the amount of work required before the first paint.
Critical rules must match the actual templates and breakpoints. A news article, a game landing page, and an archive can have different above-the-fold markup. If you inline only the home page’s rules on every URL, another template may show unstyled content until the full stylesheet arrives.
Load the remaining stylesheet after the initial render
Rules for content below the fold, rarely used components, and template sections outside the first viewport can be delivered after the initial paint. The deferred stylesheet still has to arrive before visitors reach those sections, so test scrolling, expanding menus, responsive changes, and route-specific components.
Watch for a flash of unstyled content, a flash of incorrectly styled content, and cumulative layout shift. A page can score better on a blocking-resource audit while looking worse if its fonts, dimensions, navigation, or responsive layout change visibly when the deferred CSS arrives.

- Load JavaScript Deferred adds deferred behavior to eligible scripts. Review the resulting exclusions when a script cannot safely wait.
- Remove Unused CSS removes CSS that is not detected as used for the page. Its documentation presents this as the preferred CSS method when it works correctly for the site.
- Load CSS Asynchronously generates critical-path CSS and loads the rest asynchronously. This is positioned as an alternative when Remove Unused CSS is unsuitable or causes an issue.
These controls automate transformations; they do not understand every custom interaction automatically. Dynamic classes, consent states, menus that open on demand, and plugin-generated markup may require exclusions or additional testing.
Defer versus async: choose by dependency behavior
| Property | defer |
async |
|---|---|---|
| HTML parsing | Does not normally pause parsing while the file downloads | Does not normally pause parsing while the file downloads |
| Execution timing | After parsing has finished | As soon as the file is available |
| Order among multiple files | Document order is preserved | Order is not guaranteed |
| Best fit | Non-critical scripts with dependencies or a required sequence | Independent scripts whose execution can happen at any time |
| Main failure mode | A feature initializes later than expected or an early dependency was incorrectly delayed | A dependent script runs before the library or global it needs |
If you cannot state that a script is independent, do not choose async by default. Start with defer for dependency-ordered, non-critical code, or leave the script synchronous until its initialization path is understood.
Critical CSS versus asynchronous full stylesheets
| Strategy | Visual stability | Maintenance | Template handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Critical CSS plus deferred remainder | Can be stable when the critical set is complete and accurate; incomplete rules can cause flashes or layout shifts | Requires regenerating or reviewing critical rules as templates and styles change | Works best with template- and breakpoint-aware critical sets |
| Asynchronous loading of the full stylesheet | May expose unstyled content until the stylesheet arrives | Less manual splitting, but still requires checks for timing and visual changes | Can suit sites where removing unused rules is unsuitable, provided every template is tested |
Use the first strategy when the generated critical CSS is accurate. Treat asynchronous full-stylesheet loading as a fallback, not as proof that all visual risk has disappeared.
A safe WordPress implementation sequence
- Capture a baseline. Run PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse for representative templates and record the blocking URLs, LCP, FCP, CLS, and interaction behavior. Save screenshots of the initial viewport and note which menus, forms, carts, sliders, consent dialogs, and analytics features work.
- Back up and stage the change. Make the first pass in a staging environment when possible. If you must work on production, change one setting or one script group at a time so a regression has a clear cause.
- Classify each JavaScript file. Mark it as first-paint critical, dependency-ordered but deferrable, or independent. Preserve synchronous loading for the first category, use
deferfor the second when testing confirms it, and reserveasyncfor the third. - Enable deferred JavaScript deliberately. In WP Rocket, the documented setting is Load JavaScript Deferred. After enabling it, inspect the generated page and test every interactive feature on your URL list.
- Handle asynchronous candidates separately. Do not combine an async change with a broad deferred change if you need to diagnose a dependency failure. Apply async behavior only to scripts proven to be independent.
- Generate or define critical CSS. Keep the initial block limited to the first viewport for each important template and responsive breakpoint. Check the header, typography, navigation, visible media dimensions, and first content block before moving more CSS out of the blocking path.
- Choose the CSS method. Try Remove Unused CSS where its output is correct. If it is unsuitable for the site, use Load CSS Asynchronously and verify that the critical-path CSS and the later stylesheet produce the same visual result.
- Add exclusions only for real failures. Exclude a script or style when testing shows that delaying or removing it breaks a required feature. Avoid copying a large default exclusion list without checking whether each entry is necessary.
- Purge caches. Clear the page cache and CDN cache after each meaningful change. Otherwise, the test may combine old HTML, old CSS, and new JavaScript, producing misleading results.
- Retest the same pages. Use logged-out mobile and desktop views, repeat the interaction checklist, and rerun the performance audit. Compare metrics and behavior with the baseline rather than relying on a single score.
Exclusions and dependency failures
Some scripts cannot be deferred without breaking the site. WP Rocket notes that such files may be excluded automatically or manually. Automatic exclusions are a starting point, not a guarantee that every custom integration is safe. Custom theme code, a less common plugin, or an inline dependency may not be recognized.
When a feature fails after optimization, first identify which resource supplies the missing behavior. Check whether the failure appears only on a cold load, only on mobile, or only after the cache is purged. If the dependent file executes before its library, change the dependency-sensitive group back to deferred-in-order or synchronous loading as appropriate. If the problem is a missing stylesheet rule, restore that CSS to the critical set or exclude the relevant stylesheet from removal.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Reduce exclusions only after confirming that the site remains functional. A smaller exclusion list can improve the audit, but removing a required exception is not a performance win if it breaks navigation, checkout, consent, or forms.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The menu or mobile navigation no longer opens
- Check whether the navigation script depends on a library that now executes later.
- Test the script with deferred loading while preserving its document order.
- Verify that the menu’s CSS, including the open-state class and mobile breakpoint, was not removed as unused or delayed too far.
A form, cart, or consent dialog is unresponsive
- Test the feature in a logged-out session after clearing page and CDN caches.
- Identify the initialization script and any prerequisite global it consumes.
- Exclude the dependency-sensitive file or group, then retest before changing unrelated resources.
The page flashes unstyled content or shifts when CSS arrives
- Compare the first viewport before and after the deferred stylesheet loads.
- Add missing layout, typography, navigation, and responsive rules to critical CSS.
- Check that visible media and major containers have stable dimensions so late-arriving CSS does not move the content.
The audit improves but the page feels slower or less usable
- Compare LCP, FCP, CLS, and interaction behavior on the same templates, not just the opportunity score.
- Look for delayed navigation, late consent controls, or scripts that now run only after a user action.
- Restore the smallest necessary exception and measure again. A perfect audit is not the goal if real visitors lose working features.
How to judge whether the change worked
Use a before-and-after record for each template. The useful outcome is a faster usable render: the first viewport appears with the correct structure and styling, the largest visible content arrives sooner, layout remains stable, and interactions respond normally.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- LCP: Check whether the largest visible element appears sooner after the critical CSS and script changes.
- FCP: Check whether the first meaningful paint is delayed by a remaining synchronous resource.
- CLS: Check for movement when deferred CSS, fonts, menus, or media styles arrive.
- Interaction behavior: Open menus, submit forms, test carts, move sliders, trigger consent dialogs, and confirm analytics behavior where applicable.
- Template coverage: Repeat the check on each important page type and on both mobile and desktop layouts.
Repeat the audit after cache purges and after major theme or plugin updates. Optimization settings are part of the site’s delivery layer; an update can introduce a new dependency, stylesheet, or inline script that changes what is safe to defer or remove.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deferring everything: Early dependencies and first-paint code can fail when they are delayed indiscriminately.
- Making every script asynchronous: Independent execution is a requirement; file size alone is not.
- Inlining the entire stylesheet: Critical CSS should be a small first-viewport subset, not a second copy of the site’s full CSS.
- Trusting one URL: WordPress templates and plugin features vary by page type.
- Skipping cache purges: Mixed cached assets can make a successful change look broken or hide a real regression.
- Removing exclusions for a higher score: An exclusion that protects a working feature is more valuable than a small audit improvement.
- Measuring only the audit grade: LCP, FCP, CLS, and real interactions determine whether visitors actually get a better experience.
The practical decision rule
Keep code that is required before the first paint or has strict early dependencies synchronous until it can be safely redesigned. Defer non-critical scripts whose order matters. Use async only for scripts that are genuinely independent. Inline the small CSS set needed for the initial viewport, then defer the rest; in a plugin workflow, prefer Remove Unused CSS when it is accurate and use asynchronous CSS when that method is unsuitable. After each change, clear caches, test the same representative pages, and keep any exclusion that protects a real feature.
