How to Enable 1.20 Experimental Features on a Minecraft Server

Minecraft has no universal 1.20 experimental-features switch: Java’s pre-release flag was removed in Java 1.20, while Bedrock experiments are enabled in world settings and carry world-compatibility risks.

There is no single “1.20 experimental features” switch for every Minecraft server. First identify whether the server is Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, its exact version, and the experiment you want. Java’s pre-release Update 1.20 experiment was removed when Java 1.20 released; Bedrock experiments are enabled in world settings and can make a world unstable or incompatible with future updates.

First: identify the edition, build, and experiment

Java and Bedrock use different experimental-feature systems, so instructions for one edition do not automatically apply to the other. Check the server’s edition and exact game version or build, then identify the specific feature you want. “1.20 experimental features” may refer to Java’s historical pre-release Update 1.20 content or to a Bedrock experiment available in a particular build.

  • Java Edition: Feature flags were enabled through datapacks and stored in the world. The old Update 1.20 experiment is not a toggle for released Java 1.20.
  • Bedrock Edition: Experiments are selected in a world’s Game settings. The available experiments and their names depend on the release and feature.

Java Edition: the Update 1.20 experiment was for pre-release worlds

Java Edition 1.19.3 introduced feature flags. Its release notes explain that flags are stored in the world and enabled through datapacks. The built-in update_1_20 datapack/feature flag was the mechanism for accessing experimental Update 1.20 content during the pre-release period.

For a historical pre-release setup

If you are recreating that configuration on a matching pre-release server, create a new world with the appropriate built-in pack enabled at world creation. In server.properties, initial-enabled-packs and initial-disabled-packs select initial packs for world creation; they are not a way to retrofit the experiment into an existing world. The 1.19.3 notes also state that feature packs must be explicitly enabled and that a datapack requiring a feature unavailable to the loaded world will be disabled.

For released Java 1.20

You do not need to enable the old Update 1.20 experiment to use content included in the release. The official Java 1.20 release notes say the update_1_20 feature flag and built-in datapack were removed because those features were no longer experimental. Editing a current server.properties file will not restore that removed experiment or add it to an existing world.

Bedrock Edition: enable an experiment in the world settings

Minecraft’s Bedrock experimental-features guidance describes enabling experiments from a world’s Game settings. It covers new and existing worlds, but does not establish a universal server.properties switch for Bedrock Dedicated Servers.

  1. Make a separate backup copy of the world before changing its settings.
  2. Open or edit the world and go to Game settings.
  3. Find the Experiments section and enable the toggle for the specific experiment you need.
  4. Accept the confirmation prompt, then use the resulting world with the server workflow supported for your edition and build.

Minecraft says activating an experiment on an existing world automatically creates a copy, and recommends manually copying the world as an extra precaution. Its guidance warns: “Activating experimental features that are still under development means that your world might crash, break, or not work with future updates.” It also says an experimental world cannot later be restored to a non-experimental state, so keep the backup separate.

Experiment names depend on the Bedrock build

Do not assume that every Bedrock 1.20 build has the same toggles or experimental content. For example, the official Bedrock 1.20.70/71 release notes label upcoming 1.21 content such as Wind Charge and Bogged as experimental. That example applies to those releases; it does not establish which experiments are available in another build.

Choose the right path for your server

Edition and situation Where the setting lives World implications
Java pre-release Update 1.20 Built-in feature datapack selected during world creation Initial pack properties apply only when creating the world; match the pre-release server version.
Released Java 1.20 No Update 1.20 experimental toggle; the flag and built-in pack were removed The released features no longer require the experiment.
Bedrock, supported world-settings workflow World’s Game settings > Experiments Can create a copy when enabled on an existing world; experimental status cannot be undone, and stability or future compatibility may be affected.
Already-hosted or managed server Use the host’s documented workflow for the exact edition and build Panel controls vary; the world-settings procedure is not confirmed as available in every hosting panel.

Before enabling anything on a live world

  • Confirm the edition, exact server build, and exact experiment rather than relying on “1.20” alone.
  • Back up the world independently of any automatic copy or host snapshot.
  • For Java, do not treat initial-enabled-packs or initial-disabled-packs as existing-world switches.
  • For Bedrock, check the supported workflow for the server hosting that world; the documented Game settings route may not be exposed in a host’s control panel.
