To host a Project Zomboid Build 42 dedicated server, install the server files with SteamCMD, forward the game’s UDP ports, edit servertest.ini, and launch the supplied server script. Build 42’s branch name and memory behavior have changed during development, so verify the current branch in SteamDB or the official PZwiki before adding any beta flag.

What you need before hosting
A dedicated server is a separate installation from the Project Zomboid game client. SteamCMD downloads and updates the server files; players can then connect with the normal game client. You do not need to keep the game client open on the server machine.

Recommended Free Tools
- A Windows or Linux computer that can stay online while people play.
- Router-administrator access if players will connect from outside your home network.
- Host-firewall access to allow inbound game traffic.
- A SteamCMD installation and enough disk space for the server files and generated world.
- Build 42-compatible clients for every player. A client on a different branch can fail to join even when networking is correct.
Self-hosting avoids a recurring hosting bill, but you provide the hardware, electricity, updates, backups, router configuration, and uptime. A managed game server exchanges that work for a recurring fee and usually provides a web panel. Choose self-hosting when you can administer a computer and router; choose managed hosting when continuous availability and simpler administration matter more than cost control.
Which Build 42 branch should you install?
Build 42 branch labels have not been consistent across guides. Some older instructions use a beta flag such as -beta unstable, while other reports say the public Build 42 build became the default after version 42.20. Do not copy a beta flag from an old guide without checking the current listing.

The PZwiki Build 42 page reported that Build 42 became stable on 29 July 2026, but that date came from a search snippet rather than a confirmed page view. Treat the branch as time-sensitive: check SteamDB and the official PZwiki immediately before installation, then use the branch name they currently document. If they show Build 42 as the default public build, install without a beta selector. If they document a named branch, add only that verified name to your SteamCMD command.
All players must select the same game branch. A server updated to a newer unstable build may reject clients on the stable build, and a server left on an older build can produce version or Lua-script errors during connection.
Step 1: Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line content tool. It is not the Project Zomboid launcher and it does not require a graphical Steam login for this server installation.
Windows installation
- Download and extract SteamCMD into a folder you control, such as
C:steamcmd. - Create a destination folder for the server, for example
C:pz-server. Avoid a location that your Windows account cannot write to. - Open Command Prompt in the SteamCMD folder.
- Run the installation command below, replacing the destination with your actual path:
steamcmd +force_install_dir C:pz-server +login anonymous +app_update 380870 validate +quit
The app ID 380870 is the ID repeated by third-party dedicated-server guides; it was not confirmed on an official page in the available documentation. Verify the ID in SteamDB or the official wiki if Valve changes the listing. The validate option checks downloaded files and can take longer than a normal update.
Linux installation
- Install SteamCMD using the package method appropriate for your distribution, or extract Valve’s Linux package into a directory owned by the account that will run the server.
- Create a server directory, for example
~/pz-server. - Run SteamCMD with an absolute installation path:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/youruser/pz-server +login anonymous +app_update 380870 validate +quit
Use an ordinary account for both installation and operation. Do not run the Project Zomboid server as root; root ownership often creates permission problems when you later edit configuration files or restore backups.
Applying a verified branch selector
Only append a branch option after checking the current branch spelling in SteamDB or PZwiki. The commonly copied -beta unstable example may be obsolete, and using an incorrect name can install the wrong build or leave the server on its previous branch. Record the branch you selected so every player can match it in the game client.

Step 2: Forward the Project Zomboid server ports
Project Zomboid’s standard server settings use UDP. The PZwiki server-settings page lists DefaultPort=16261 and UDPPort=16262. Forward these as UDP, not TCP.
| Purpose | Port | Protocol | Where to allow it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server handshake/default port | 16261 | UDP | Router and host firewall |
| Game UDP port | 16262 | UDP | Router and host firewall |
| Additional world-streaming ports | One TCP port per player slot, according to the PZwiki FAQ | TCP | Router and host firewall, if you follow that requirement |
The extra TCP-port requirement is disputed in community guides. The wiki describes it as necessary for streaming the world to clients, while other administrators report working servers without manually forwarding a TCP range. Treat it as the wiki’s documented claim rather than a universally demonstrated requirement: start with the two UDP forwards, test a real outside connection, and add the documented per-slot TCP range if your installation or the current wiki instructions require it.
Router forwarding procedure
- Give the server computer a stable local address, preferably with a DHCP reservation in the router. A forwarding rule aimed at a changing address will eventually point at the wrong machine.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding or virtual-server page.
- Create an inbound rule for UDP port
16261to the server’s local IP address. - Create a second inbound rule for UDP port
16262to the same address. - If you are following the PZwiki per-player TCP guidance, create the corresponding TCP rules for the slots you intend to support.
- Save or apply the router configuration, then restart the server if your router requires it.
Do not select TCP-only forwarding for the two standard ports. A router rule can look correct while forwarding the wrong protocol, which leaves outside players unable to establish a direct session.
Host-firewall rules
Router forwarding only moves packets to the computer; the operating-system firewall must also permit them. Add inbound rules for UDP 16261 and UDP 16262 on the network profile used by the server. If you adopt the per-slot TCP arrangement, allow those TCP ports as well. Restrict the rules to the server program or the intended local network where your firewall supports that choice.
Test from a player who is not on the same home network. A local connection can work even when the router’s public-side forwarding is wrong.
UPnP as an alternative
The server configuration includes UPnP=true. According to the PZwiki settings information, this asks the server to create gateway port mappings automatically and falls back to the default ports if the attempt fails. UPnP depends on router support and is less predictable than explicit forwarding. If you enable it, still check the router’s mapping and the host firewall; UPnP cannot bypass a blocked operating-system rule or an ISP-level restriction.

Step 3: Configure servertest.ini
The main configuration file is named servertest.ini. Its location is:
| Operating system | Path |
|---|---|
| Windows | %USERPROFILE%Zomboidserverservertest.ini |
| Linux | $HOME/Zomboid/Server/servertest.ini |
The directory is created after the server has been started at least once. If you cannot see the file, launch the server, let it generate its initial files, stop it cleanly, and then inspect the path for the account that ran it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Stop before editing
Stop the server before changing the file. A guide reports that the server can rewrite servertest.ini during shutdown, potentially replacing changes made while it was running. The safe sequence is: stop the process, edit the file, save it, and then start the server again.
Settings to change first
Open the file in a plain-text editor and set the identity and access values your group needs. The exact generated file contains many additional options; leave values you do not understand unchanged until you have a reason to alter them.
PublicName=Your server name
Password=Use-a-strong-password
MaxPlayers=8
The example values above are placeholders for your own choices, not documented defaults. Keep the password private and use a different value from any account or router password. Set MaxPlayers to a number your hardware and connection can sustain rather than assuming a guide’s claimed default or hard cap; those figures were not established in the available documentation.
Save the file as plain text with the exact .ini extension. On Windows, make sure the editor has not added an extra .txt suffix. On Linux, preserve the capitalization of the directory shown above.

Back up the configuration and world
Before changing sandbox rules or adding mods, copy the Zomboid server directory to a separate location while the server is stopped. Include the world-save files and servertest.ini. A backup made while files are actively changing may be incomplete, so schedule copies during a clean shutdown.
Step 4: Plan memory and world generation
Build 42 uses more memory than Build 41. Some administrators report that about 10 GB is a practical floor and that an 8 GB machine can be killed by an out-of-memory condition while generating a new world. This is an anecdotal single-guide report, not a published system requirement or a guarantee for every map, player count, mod set, or operating system.
Use the report as a warning when sizing a host: leave memory for the operating system, SteamCMD updates, logging, and any other services. Watch memory during first world creation rather than judging capacity from an idle server. If the process is terminated during generation, close other services, increase available memory or move the server to a larger machine, and generate the world again. Do not promise a particular player count from RAM alone; map streaming, mods, CPU performance, storage speed, and network upload also affect the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 5: Start the dedicated server
Windows
From the installed server directory, run StartServer64.bat. The first launch creates the user-data directories and configuration files if they do not already exist. Keep the console window open while the server is running, and stop it through the server’s normal shutdown command or procedure so files are written cleanly.
Linux
From the server directory, run start-server.sh as the ordinary user who owns the installation. If the shell reports that the script is not executable, grant execute permission to that file as the installation owner, then run it again. Do not switch to root to work around a permissions mistake; correct ownership and permissions instead.
For unattended operation, use your distribution’s service manager or a terminal multiplexer, but keep the service configured to run under the non-root account. Arrange a controlled stop before system maintenance so servertest.ini and world data are not left in a half-written state.

Step 6: Connect and verify the server
- Start the server and wait for the console to finish loading the world.
- From the same network, connect using the host’s private address. This confirms that the server process and basic configuration work.
- Have a friend on a different network connect using your public address and the configured server port.
- Confirm that the client’s Build 42 branch matches the server’s branch.
- Join with the configured password and check that the server name, player limit, and world behavior match your edited file.
Testing both a local and an outside connection separates game configuration problems from router and ISP problems. If local players can join but outside players cannot, investigate networking first rather than reinstalling the server.
Project Zomboid server port forwarding troubleshooting
Friends cannot connect from outside your network
- Confirm that the server computer still has the local IP targeted by the router rules.
- Recheck that 16261 and 16262 are forwarded as UDP, not TCP-only rules.
- Confirm that the host firewall allows both UDP ports and that the server process is running.
- Test from a genuinely external connection; testing from inside the same LAN can be affected by the router’s lack of NAT loopback.
- Check whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks unsolicited inbound traffic. In that situation, local forwarding may be correct but a direct public connection may still be impossible.
The protocol check comes first because a TCP rule that looks right in a router interface does nothing for the game’s standard UDP traffic.
The client says port 16262 is closed
A Steam community report says the warning about server port 16262 being closed can be harmless: the server may fall back to Steam’s relay. Relay connectivity can let players join even without a direct mapping, but it is not proof that your UDP forwarding works. Keep the UDP forward in place for direct connections, then test actual gameplay from outside the LAN.
The server starts but uses old settings
Stop the process, edit the correct servertest.ini under the account that runs the server, save it as plain text, and start again. Editing a copy in the SteamCMD installation directory will not change the active user-data file. If the file keeps reverting, make the edit only while the server is stopped and check file ownership and write permissions.
Players receive a version or branch error
Compare the exact Build 42 branch and build number on the server and every client. Remove an obsolete beta selector from the update command if the current public build no longer uses it, or add the currently documented selector if SteamDB or PZwiki now requires one. Update all clients after changing the server branch.
The process is killed during first world creation
Treat this as a possible memory shortage. The reported 10 GB practical floor is guidance from some administrators, not an official minimum. Check operating-system logs and available memory, stop unrelated services, and retry after moving to a host with more headroom. Large mod collections and additional services increase pressure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Linux reports permission errors
Verify that the server directory, Zomboid data directory, and startup script belong to the ordinary account running the service. Running one command as root and later commands as that account can leave root-owned files that prevent configuration writes. Correct ownership, retain executable permission on start-server.sh, and restart as the same non-root user.
Updating without losing your world
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the complete
Zomboidserver-data directory and your SteamCMD installation’s configuration notes. - Run SteamCMD again with
app_update 380870 validate, using the verified current branch option if one is required. - Start the server and watch the console for script, mod, or save-conversion errors.
- Test with one trusted player before opening the server to everyone.
Build 42 branch labels are volatile, so write down the branch and build number used for each update. If a new build breaks a mod or save, stop the server and restore the backup rather than repeatedly launching it against the only copy of the world.
Self-hosting checklist
- SteamCMD installed separately from the game client.
- App ID and Build 42 branch verified against current SteamDB or PZwiki information.
- Server files installed in a writable directory.
- UDP 16261 and UDP 16262 forwarded to the correct local address.
- Host firewall rules created for the same UDP ports.
servertest.iniedited only while the server is stopped.- Server launched with
StartServer64.batorstart-server.sh. - Linux service running as an ordinary user, never root.
- External connection tested, not just a LAN connection.
- World and configuration backups made before updates or major edits.
What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
The installation command, standard UDP ports, configuration paths, startup filenames, and non-root recommendation are consistent practical instructions. Branch selection, the extra per-player TCP-port arrangement, and Build 42 memory needs require more caution: branch names change, the TCP requirement is disputed in practice, and the RAM figures are administrator reports rather than official specifications. When an instruction conflicts with your current server files, prefer the current official wiki or SteamDB listing and test the result with an outside player.
