Hyper-V Replica protects a running virtual machine by continuously copying its changes to an offline replica VM on another Windows Server Hyper-V host or cluster. To set it up reliably, configure the receiving host first, open the correct firewall listener, then enable replication on each primary VM. Kerberos over HTTP (normally TCP 80) is the straightforward choice for hosts in the same or trusted Active Directory domains; certificate authentication over HTTPS (normally TCP 443) is suited to untrusted or non-domain hosts and encrypted transport. You must also plan storage, bandwidth, permissions, synchronization frequency, recovery-point retention, and the initial copy. Test the connection and wait for Normal replication health before relying on a planned failover.
What is Hyper-V Replica and how does it work?
Microsoft describes Hyper-V Replica as protection that replicates virtual machines between Hyper-V hosts running Windows Server. The primary VM remains the active workload. Hyper-V sends changes made to that VM to an offline replica VM on a secondary host, so the second site has a recoverable copy without running a second production instance.

Supported designs include one host replicating to another host, a cluster replicating to a cluster, and mixed host-to-cluster or cluster-to-host arrangements. The destination can be a standalone Hyper-V server or a failover cluster addressed through its Hyper-V Replica Broker. If you will need failback after an outage, plan replication in both directions; configuring only the original primary-to-secondary path does not automatically create a reverse copy.
Replica is a disaster-recovery feature, not a replacement for backups. It gives you a recent VM state according to the selected synchronization interval and retained recovery points. Files deleted or corrupted in the primary VM can therefore be propagated to the replica, which is why recovery-point retention and separate backups still matter.

What must be ready before enabling Hyper-V Replica?
Check the following items on both sides before opening Hyper-V Manager. Most setup failures come from an incomplete prerequisite rather than from the replication wizard itself.
- Hyper-V hosts: A primary host or cluster running the VM and a receiving host or cluster with enough CPU, memory, and storage for the replica files.
- Windows Server and Hyper-V: Hyper-V must be installed on every participating server. In Server Manager, add the Hyper-V role and management tools, or run PowerShell as Administrator:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name Hyper-V -IncludeManagementTools -Restart
- Network path: The hosts must resolve one another by the names you will enter in the wizard, and the link must carry the VM’s changed-block stream quickly enough to meet your recovery-point objective (RPO). Microsoft suggests using dedicated replication traffic or Quality of Service (QoS) throttling when replication would compete with production traffic.
- Destination capacity: Reserve space for the VM configuration, every replicated VHD or VHDX, and any additional recovery points. A destination that can hold the first copy but not ongoing change logs will eventually stall.
- Administrative rights: Use an account that is a local administrator or a member of Hyper-V Administrators on the relevant hosts. Cluster operations also require the appropriate Failover Clustering permissions.
- Authentication choice: Choose Kerberos/HTTP for hosts in the same or trusted Active Directory domains, or certificate-based HTTPS for untrusted or non-domain hosts and for encrypted transport.
- Certificates, when required: Install a non-expired certificate on every sending and receiving host. It needs both Client Authentication and Server Authentication enhanced key usages (EKUs), an associated private key, a trusted root chain, and a Common Name (CN) or Subject Alternative Name (SAN) matching the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) used in the connection.
Record the exact FQDN of the destination host or Replica Broker, the chosen port, the VHDs to protect, and the storage path before you begin. Those values must be consistent in the authorization list, firewall rule, certificate identity, and connection test.

Which authentication should you use: Kerberos or certificates?
Use Kerberos when both sides are in the same or trusted Active Directory domains and you want the simplest configuration. Use certificate authentication when the hosts are not in a shared trust boundary or when you require HTTPS transport. The choice changes the listener, port, identity checks, and ongoing administration.
| Choice | Transport and port | Best fit | What you must maintain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kerberos | HTTP, normally TCP 80 | Same or trusted Active Directory domains | Domain trust, name resolution, permissions, and the HTTP listener |
| Certificate | HTTPS, normally TCP 443 | Untrusted or non-domain hosts, or encrypted transport | Valid certificates on every host, private keys, trusted roots, EKUs, and matching FQDN CN/SAN values |
Authentication is separate from authorization. On the receiving host you can allow any authenticated server or restrict replication to specified servers. Restricting the list is the safer default when you know the source hosts; allowing any authenticated server is useful for a controlled test or a deliberately broad design.
How do you enable the receiving Hyper-V host?
Configure the destination before touching the primary VM. The destination creates the listener and defines where replica files are stored.
Configure a standalone host in Hyper-V Manager
- Open Hyper-V Manager and select the destination server.
- Open Hyper-V Settings, then select Replication Configuration.
- Check Enable this computer as a Replica server.
- Select Kerberos (HTTP) or Certificate-based authentication (HTTPS). If you choose certificates, select the certificate configuration required by your environment.
- Choose whether to authorize any authenticated server or only specified servers. Add the primary host FQDNs when using the restricted option.
- Set the replica VHD storage location. Confirm that the volume has capacity for the initial copy, ongoing changes, and retained recovery points.
- Apply the settings and verify that the service is online.
The same destination-side settings are available in Windows Admin Center and PowerShell. A minimal Kerberos configuration is:

What changes when the destination is a failover cluster?
A cluster needs a Hyper-V Replica Broker. In Failover Cluster Manager, create or select the broker, open its replication settings, enable replication, choose Kerberos or certificate authentication, and set the authorization policy. Use a storage location accessible by every node, such as a Cluster Shared Volume. Enter the broker’s FQDN—not an individual node name—when enabling replication on the primary VM. The broker gives the replica a stable cluster identity while ownership moves between nodes.
How do you enable replication for an individual VM?
After the receiver is configured, enable each protected VM from the primary host. The wizard lets you choose disks, timing, retention, and how the first copy is delivered.
- In Hyper-V Manager, right-click the VM and choose Replication > Enable Replication. In a cluster, use Failover Cluster Manager, or use the equivalent Windows Admin Center or PowerShell workflow.
- Enter the destination host or Hyper-V Replica Broker FQDN. Confirm the authentication type and port shown by the wizard.
- Run the prerequisite connection check. Do not continue with a failed name, authentication, or authorization test.
- Optionally enable compression if reducing network traffic is more important than the additional source-host CPU work.
- Select the VHD or VHDX files to replicate. Exclude disks that are temporary or can be recreated, but make that decision deliberately because an excluded disk will not be present in the replica.
- Choose a synchronization frequency: 30 seconds, 5 minutes, or 15 minutes.
- Choose recovery-point retention: keep only the latest recovery point, or retain additional hourly points. More points consume destination storage.
- Select the initial-copy method, review the summary, and finish. Monitor the initial transfer until it completes.
The synchronization interval is an RPO target, not a guarantee that every VM will always be exactly that far behind. A workload that changes data faster than the available link can transmit it will accumulate backlog. Select the shortest interval only when the network, storage, and change rate can sustain it.
Which synchronization frequency and recovery points are appropriate?
Choose based on how much recent work the business can lose and how much change data the link can carry. The available intervals are fixed at 30 seconds, 5 minutes, and 15 minutes; they are not arbitrary values you type into the wizard.
| Setting | Advantage | Cost or risk | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 seconds | Smallest intended gap between synchronization cycles | Highest network and storage pressure for fast-changing VMs | The workload has a very tight RPO and measured capacity supports it |
| 5 minutes | Balance between protection freshness and traffic | Can still fall behind during heavy write bursts | A moderate RPO is acceptable and the link is shared |
| 15 minutes | Lowest synchronization overhead of the three options | Larger potential data gap after a site loss | The application tolerates a wider RPO or the link is constrained |
Keeping only the latest recovery point minimizes storage use. Additional hourly recovery points provide older states for recovery from a logical error, but each point requires space and increases the amount of data the destination must retain. Size the destination for the VM disks plus the selected retention, not merely for the primary VM’s current used space.
How do you choose an initial-copy method?
The initial copy is the first full replica. It can be sent over the live network, or it can be staged when the VM’s disks are too large for the available link.
Send the copy over the network
This is the simplest option: the primary transmits the initial data directly to the receiving host. Use it when the link has enough spare throughput and the transfer will not disrupt production traffic. QoS or a dedicated replication network can prevent the copy from overwhelming user or storage traffic.

Use external media for a large initial copy
When a live transfer would take too long, export the initial copy to external media, transport that media to the destination, and import it into the placeholder replica VM. The wizard records the initial-copy choice; follow the resulting export and import workflow exactly. Keep the media protected because it contains the VM’s data, and do not assume replication is current until the destination has accepted the imported copy and normal synchronization resumes.
Use an existing copy when your process provides one
If your operational process already has a suitable exported or restored VM copy, select the corresponding initial-copy option and verify that the destination’s placeholder disks match the source VM. A mismatch can force a new full transfer or leave replication unable to synchronize.
Which firewall ports and rules does Hyper-V Replica need?
The Hyper-V role creates Windows Firewall exceptions, but it does not enable those exceptions by default. Enable the listener that matches the authentication mode on every receiving host (and on every cluster node that can receive through the broker).
- Kerberos: Enable Hyper-V Replica HTTP Listener (TCP-In), normally TCP port 80.
- Certificate authentication: Enable Hyper-V Replica HTTPS Listener (TCP-In), normally TCP port 443.
Also confirm that intervening network firewalls, ACLs, and security appliances permit the same destination and port. A local rule can be enabled while a routed firewall still blocks the path. Test using the exact FQDN and port entered in the replication configuration, rather than testing an unrelated management port.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do you test the replication connection from PowerShell?
Run the test on the primary side after the destination is configured and its listener is enabled. For Kerberos, Microsoft documents:
Test-VMReplicationConnection -ReplicaServerName '<Replica host FQDN>' -ReplicaServerPort 80 -AuthenticationType Kerberos
For certificate authentication, use port 443, set -AuthenticationType Certificate, and provide the certificate thumbprint required by the cmdlet. Replace the placeholder with the real FQDN; do not use a short name if the certificate identity is an FQDN.
A successful test reports that the connection to the specified Replica server was successful. If it fails, fix DNS, routing, the selected listener, authorization, or certificate validation before enabling the VM. Repeating the VM wizard without correcting the connection only creates more confusing partial configuration.

How do you monitor replication health after setup?
Monitor both the initial-copy progress and the ongoing replication state. Hyper-V Manager, Failover Cluster Manager, Windows Admin Center, and PowerShell can display the VM’s replication health. A healthy VM should report Normal.
- Warning: Investigate lag, transient communication errors, or growing change data before the condition becomes critical.
- Critical: Treat the replica as at risk until the underlying storage, network, authentication, or service fault is corrected.
- Paused: Determine whether an administrator or an infrastructure event paused replication, then resume only after the cause is understood.
- Resynchronization Required: Check the VM’s disks, destination capacity, and Hyper-V events; resynchronize only after correcting the condition that caused divergence.
Pay particular attention to stalled replication, Hyper-V Replica Broker or VM Management Service failures, rapidly growing Hyper-V Replica log (HRL) files, and low destination disk space. Replication can also fail after an operating-system upgrade or patch. Review the Hyper-V Replica and Failover Clustering event logs, including the event IDs in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance, before forcing a resume or resynchronization.
How do you perform a planned failover?
A planned failover is a controlled move in which you shut down the primary and start the synchronized replica. It is appropriate for maintenance or a site move when you can coordinate downtime.
- Confirm that the VM’s replication health is Normal. Do not start a planned failover from a Warning, Critical, Paused, or Resynchronization Required state.
- Shut down the primary VM cleanly. This prevents new writes while the final changes are sent.
- Start the planned-failover operation from the primary VM’s replication actions and allow the final synchronization to complete.
- Start the replica VM on the secondary host if it does not start automatically.
- Connect the replica to the correct virtual switch and verify the expected network identity before allowing users or dependent services to connect.
- Complete the operation by removing recovery points as prompted. Leaving obsolete points in place consumes storage and leaves the failover sequence unfinished.
After the replica is serving production, reverse the replication direction if you need protection back to the original site. Failback is a new replication sequence: do not assume that the old primary is automatically current after the roles change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the right troubleshooting order when replication fails?
Work from the receiver and basic connectivity toward workload capacity. This order separates configuration errors from a link that is simply too small for the VM’s change rate.
- Check service and role state. Confirm that the destination host or Replica Broker is online, Hyper-V Replica is enabled, and the VM is in a valid replication state.
- Check names and ports. Resolve both FQDNs, test reachability to the chosen port, and verify that the matching HTTP or HTTPS listener is enabled on the receiver.
- Validate HTTPS certificates. Check expiry, private-key availability, Client Authentication and Server Authentication EKUs, the trusted root chain, and the FQDN match in the CN or SAN.
- Check authorization and permissions. Confirm that the primary host is permitted by the receiver’s authorization policy and that the operating account has local administrator or Hyper-V Administrators rights.
- Check capacity and throughput. Review destination free space, bandwidth, QoS limits, VM write rate, and HRL growth. A rapidly growing HRL or repeated backlog indicates that replication cannot transmit changes as quickly as the primary produces them.
- Review event logs. Inspect Hyper-V Replica and Failover Clustering logs for the relevant event IDs, including broker and VMMS errors.
- Recheck after maintenance. Following an OS upgrade or patch, verify replication compatibility and the service state. Resume or resynchronize only after identifying the underlying error.
If the initial copy never completes, solve that transfer first; changing recovery-point settings will not repair a blocked listener or an undersized destination. If synchronization repeatedly falls behind after a successful initial copy, measure change rate and link capacity before changing the interval or adding storage.
How should you design Hyper-V Replica for hosts and clusters?
| Topology | Destination identity | Storage requirement | Important design point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host to host | Receiving host FQDN | Local destination storage sized for VM disks and retention | Simple deployment with no cluster broker |
| Cluster to cluster | Destination Hyper-V Replica Broker FQDN | Storage accessible by every destination node, such as a Cluster Shared Volume | Configure the broker, not an individual node, as the replication endpoint |
| Host to cluster or cluster to host | Host FQDN or broker FQDN, respectively | Capacity appropriate to the receiving side | Confirm that the chosen endpoint’s authorization and listener settings match the topology |
For bidirectional disaster recovery, configure the reverse path as well as the original path. Document which site is primary for each VM, which network the replica should use after failover, and who is responsible for removing recovery points and reversing replication.

What operational checklist should you use before declaring a VM protected?
- The receiving host or Replica Broker is enabled and online.
- The selected authentication mode, port, authorization list, and firewall listener agree.
- DNS resolves the exact FQDN used by the wizard and certificate.
- Certificate expiry, EKUs, private keys, trust, and CN/SAN identity have been checked when using HTTPS.
- The destination volume has room for the VM, HRL growth, and selected recovery points.
- The initial copy has completed successfully.
- The VM reports Normal replication health and remains Normal during routine monitoring.
- The team has recorded the synchronization frequency, retention choice, failover network, and failback procedure.
- A connection test and a controlled test failover have been completed without changing production data.
Microsoft’s documented numeric choices are TCP 80 for Kerberos/HTTP, TCP 443 for certificate/HTTPS, and synchronization intervals of 30 seconds, 5 minutes, or 15 minutes. There are no independent performance statistics implied by those settings; actual lag depends on workload change rate, storage, and network capacity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Hyper-V Replica protect a VM between non-domain servers?
Yes. Use certificate-based authentication over HTTPS rather than Kerberos. Each sending and receiving host needs a trusted, non-expired certificate with a private key, Client Authentication and Server Authentication EKUs, and a CN or SAN matching the FQDN used for replication.
Does enabling Hyper-V Replica copy every virtual disk automatically?
No. The VM wizard presents the VHD and VHDX files so you can select which disks to replicate. Any disk you leave out will not be available on the replica, so document the exclusion and confirm that the guest can operate without it.
How can I estimate whether a 30-second interval is realistic?
Measure the VM’s sustained write-change rate during its busiest periods and compare it with the usable replication bandwidth after protocol, QoS, and other traffic overhead. If the destination cannot transmit each cycle before the next begins, choose a longer interval or increase capacity rather than relying on an accumulating backlog.
What happens to Hyper-V Replica after a host patch or upgrade?
Replication can enter an error, paused, or resynchronization-required state after maintenance. Check Hyper-V Replica and Failover Clustering event logs, confirm compatibility and service health, and correct the underlying issue before resuming or resynchronizing.
Is a planned failover the same as an emergency failover?
No. A planned failover assumes the primary VM can be shut down cleanly and that replication health is Normal, allowing final changes to be synchronized. An emergency recovery may use the latest available recovery point and can lose changes that had not reached the replica.
