Microsoft Edge already includes a QR-code generator for the webpage you are viewing. In a supported Edge version, open the page, right-click a blank area, and choose Create QR code for this page. Edge shows a code that you can share, copy as a link, or download as a PNG for email and printing. If that command is missing, the usual causes are an unsupported Edge version or an administrator policy named QRCodeGeneratorEnabled that has been disabled.
The feature is available on Windows and macOS with Edge 125 or later and on Android with Edge 140 or later. Microsoft’s policy documentation does not support this policy on iOS, and Microsoft cautions that availability can vary by device, market, and browser version.

How do I make a QR code for a webpage in Edge?
Use Edge’s page context menu; no extension or separate QR application is required. The generated code represents the URL of the page currently open in that tab.
- Open the page. Navigate to the webpage you want other people to open.
- Open the page menu. Right-click an empty area of the webpage, away from a link, image, text selection, or form control.
- Choose the command. Select Create QR code for this page.
- Use the result. Point a phone camera at the displayed code, use the displayed link for digital sharing, or select the download control to save a PNG.
- Print or send the PNG. The downloaded image can be inserted into an email, document, slide, poster, handout, or other print layout.
The code is for the current page, so check the address bar before generating it. If the page redirects, requires a sign-in, or is visible only to members of a private service, scanning the code will not make that content public; the recipient still needs whatever access the destination requires.

Where can I reuse a code I already generated?
After a code has been created, Edge keeps a QR icon at the right side of the address bar. Select that icon to bring the generated-code view back without opening the context menu again. This is useful when you need another download or want to show the link to someone nearby.
Is Edge’s QR-code generator enabled by default?
Yes, according to Microsoft’s policy documentation, the feature is enabled when the controlling policy is enabled or left unconfigured. It is disabled only when an administrator sets QRCodeGeneratorEnabled to Disabled.
This distinction matters on managed computers. A user normally cannot override a browser policy imposed by an organization, so reinstalling an extension or changing a personal Edge setting will not restore a command that policy has removed. An administrator must change the policy, or remove an accidental disabling value, and then allow Edge to receive the updated configuration.
Which Edge versions and devices support the policy?
Microsoft lists these minimum versions for the QR Code Generator policy. The version requirement applies to the Edge browser on that platform, not to the phone or computer’s operating-system version.
| Platform | Minimum Edge version listed by Microsoft | Policy support | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | 125 or later | Supported | Edge version and organizational policy |
| macOS | 125 or later | Supported | Edge version and managed preferences |
| Android | 140 or later | Supported | Edge version and Android policy configuration |
| iOS | Not stated as supported for this policy | Not supported in the policy documentation | Do not assume the desktop policy applies to iPhone or iPad |
To see your installed Edge version, open Edge’s Settings and more menu, choose Settings, then About Microsoft Edge. Edge checks for updates on that page. If the browser is below the platform minimum, update it through your organization’s approved process or the normal app-update channel before diagnosing policy settings.
Microsoft also notes that feature availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. Therefore, two devices with apparently similar versions can still expose slightly different menus.

How do I enable QRCodeGeneratorEnabled on Windows?
On a personally managed Windows PC, an administrator can enable the policy in Group Policy. The policy is located under Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge and is named QRCodeGeneratorEnabled.
- Open the organization’s Group Policy editor or management console.
- Go to Administrative Templates, then Microsoft Edge.
- Open
QRCodeGeneratorEnabled. - Set the policy to Enabled when the QR generator must be available. If the policy was disabled unintentionally, change it from Disabled or remove the disabling assignment.
- Apply the policy through the normal domain or device-management process, then restart Edge or otherwise allow it to refresh its policies.
Microsoft documents the corresponding Windows registry location as SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. The value name is QRCodeGeneratorEnabled, and its data type is REG_DWORD. Microsoft’s disabled example is 0x00000000. Do not edit a company-managed registry directly unless you administer that device; a management system can overwrite local changes.
How can I confirm that Windows policy reached Edge?
In Edge, open edge://policy and refresh the page. Look for QRCodeGeneratorEnabled and inspect whether the browser reports it as enabled, disabled, or not configured. If a policy appears with a source or scope you do not control, contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass it.
How do I enable the policy on macOS?
Microsoft uses the same preference key, QRCodeGeneratorEnabled, on macOS. In a managed Mac environment, set that key to Enabled in the organization’s configuration profile or management console. Microsoft’s disabled example is the Boolean value <false/>; remove that disabling assignment or change the managed setting to Enabled when the feature is required.
Recommended Free Tools
After the profile is changed, quit and reopen Edge if the browser does not immediately reflect the new policy. You can inspect the browser’s applied policies at edge://policy. A profile that remains managed may continue to enforce the old value until the device checks in with its management service.
How do I enable the policy on Android?
On Android, the documented policy key is also QRCodeGeneratorEnabled. Microsoft’s disabled example uses the Boolean value false. An Android administrator should set the policy to Enabled in the organization’s mobile-management console, or remove an unintended false value.

- Update Edge to version 140 or later if your organization permits the update.
- Change the managed application configuration for
QRCodeGeneratorEnabled. - Force a policy sync on the device, if your management system provides that option.
- Close and reopen Edge, then test the page menu again.
The exact management-console screens differ between Android-management products, so the policy name is more reliable than a particular menu label. If the browser is personally installed and not managed, a missing command is more likely to be a version or platform-availability issue than an Android policy setting.
Why is “Create QR code for this page” missing?
Check the causes below in order. Most cases are resolved by updating Edge or correcting a policy assignment.
1. The browser is below the supported version
Compare the installed version with the platform matrix above. Windows and macOS require Edge 125 or later; Android requires Edge 140 or later. Update and restart Edge, then test a normal public webpage.
2. An administrator disabled the feature
Open edge://policy and look for QRCodeGeneratorEnabled. A Disabled value removes the feature even when the browser is otherwise current. Ask the administrator to enable the policy or remove the accidental disabling value.
3. You are clicking an item rather than the page
The command is intended for the webpage itself. Right-click a blank area of the document rather than a hyperlink, image, selected text, address-bar field, or embedded control. A site can also provide its own context menu; try another blank area or a simple page to distinguish a site-specific menu from an Edge limitation.
4. Device, market, or browser differences apply
Microsoft warns that availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. Test the same current Edge release on another supported device if you need to determine whether the behavior is local to one installation.

5. The page is an internal or restricted surface
Test with an ordinary HTTPS webpage. Browser-internal pages, protected enterprise portals, or special application surfaces may not expose the same context-menu commands. If the feature works on a public page but not on one internal surface, the difference may be the page type rather than the policy.
How do I download, share, or print the generated code?
After selecting Create QR code for this page, Edge displays the code and its associated link. Use the on-screen sharing option when you only need to send the destination digitally. Select the download control to save a PNG when the recipient needs an image file or when you are preparing printed material.
- Email: attach the PNG or place it in the message body, and include the readable URL for recipients whose camera cannot scan the image.
- Printing: insert the PNG into a document or layout and check the printed result with a phone before distributing it.
- Presentations: display the code on a slide while keeping the destination URL visible elsewhere in the presentation.
- Reuse: select the QR icon at the right of the address bar to reopen the generated-code view.
Edge’s documented workflow produces a code for the current webpage and a downloadable PNG. It is not documented as a general-purpose QR design editor with custom colors, logos, batches, analytics, or arbitrary data-entry fields. If you need those functions, you would need a separate tool, but that is not required for sharing a webpage from Edge.
Can Edge scan a QR code?
Yes. Microsoft documents a scanning workflow in Edge: select the camera icon in the address bar and scan the code. The scan feature is separate from generating a code, so a device may be able to scan even when an administrator has disabled generation.
When scanning a code from a poster, screen, or printed page, verify the destination shown before opening it. A QR symbol can contain a URL, contact information, or product information; the code itself does not guarantee that the destination is trustworthy. For a code you generated, compare the displayed link with the page address you intended to share.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the practical limits of Edge’s built-in generator?
The built-in feature is optimized for a quick handoff from an open webpage to a phone. Its strengths are that it is already in Edge, follows the current page URL, offers a PNG download, and can be controlled centrally through browser policy. Its scope is narrower than a dedicated QR publishing system.

What should an administrator check before rolling it out?
Test both the browser experience and the management configuration. A short validation prevents users from receiving a policy that appears correct but has not reached their device.
- Confirm the device is on a supported Edge version for its platform.
- Confirm the policy is assigned to the intended users or devices, not just created in the console.
- Check
edge://policyon a test device for the effective value and source. - Open a normal webpage and verify the exact Create QR code for this page command.
- Download a PNG and scan it with a separate phone camera to verify that it opens the intended URL.
- Document whether the policy is managed centrally so users know whom to contact when the command is unavailable.
Does enabling the generator make a webpage public?
No. Enabling the feature only permits Edge to encode the current page’s destination in a QR symbol. Anyone who scans the image still encounters the same sign-in, network, permission, or subscription requirements as a person who types the URL manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore distributing a printed PNG, decide whether the destination should remain stable. Changing a page address later can make copies already printed point to an obsolete location; Edge’s generator does not provide a separate redirect or update service.
What is the quickest way to diagnose a single missing command?
Open a standard webpage, verify the Edge version, inspect edge://policy, and right-click a blank area. If the command appears there, the original page or its context menu is the differentiator. If it does not appear on a supported version and the policy is not disabled, test another supported device and check Microsoft’s current availability guidance because functionality can vary by device, market, and browser release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I generate a QR code for text or a phone number in Edge?
The documented Edge command creates a code for the webpage currently open in the browser. Microsoft’s general QR description includes URLs, contact information, and product information, but Edge’s built-in workflow described here does not provide a separate form for entering arbitrary text or contact fields.
Will a QR code still work if I close Edge?
Yes, the PNG is an image of the encoded destination and does not depend on the original Edge window remaining open. Scanning it later still depends on the destination being available and on the recipient having any required network access or permissions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does my phone scan the code but show a sign-in page?
The QR code carries the page address, not a bypass for authentication. If the webpage is private, the phone must use an account with permission, and an organization’s network or single-sign-on requirements may also apply.
Can an administrator disable scanning separately from generation?
The documented policy controls the QR Code Generator feature. Microsoft separately documents scanning through the camera icon in the address bar; the supplied policy description does not establish a second policy that independently disables scanning.
