Automatic DLC downloads are controlled by your console or game launcher—not by a cable, drive, or other accessory. Turn on the platform’s update setting, keep the device online during its permitted background state, and verify that the DLC is owned by the same account that runs the game. PlayStation separates downloading from installing in some cases; Nintendo Switch uses a system-wide switch; Steam combines per-game update rules with global scheduling; and Epic Games Launcher provides an Auto Update toggle for each game.
What automatic updates can—and cannot—do
An automatic-update setting tells a platform or launcher to look for files released by a publisher and download them under the conditions you allow. That can include a game patch and, when the store recognizes an entitlement, downloadable content (DLC). It does not purchase an expansion, transfer ownership between accounts, or guarantee that a game will expose the new content immediately after the files arrive.

DLC has two separate parts:
- Entitlement: the store account must own the add-on, or the account must have access through the applicable subscription or license.
- Installation and activation: the platform must download the content, and the game may need it enabled in a content-management, add-on, or in-game menu.
That distinction explains why a console can report that automatic updates are enabled while an expansion is still absent. First confirm the account and purchase, then inspect the platform’s content list and perform a manual update check.

PlayStation 5: enable automatic DLC and game updates
Turn on downloads and, if wanted, installation
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Auto-Download.
- If you want the console to install updates while the system is in Rest Mode, turn on Auto-Install in Rest Mode as well.
Auto-Download and Auto-Install are not identical. Auto-Download obtains the update files. Auto-Install allows the PS5 to apply them in Rest Mode, and Sony notes that this option may require the game not to be suspended. If you do not want a suspended game closed, leave Auto-Install off and use Auto-Download alone; install the update when you next start the game.

Keep the PS5 online in Rest Mode
- Open Settings.
- Go to System.
- Select Power Saving.
- Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s instruction is explicit: “To download games while in rest mode, set your console to stay connected to the internet.” Without that connection, the PS5 cannot perform the background download even when Auto-Download is enabled.
Check immediately instead of waiting
Launching a game or app checks for the newest available version. For a manual check, highlight the game, open its options menu, and choose the update-check command shown by the console. This is useful after buying an expansion, changing an account, or reconnecting the PS5 to the internet.
Remote downloads after an online purchase
Once automatic downloads and updates are enabled, PlayStation states that remote downloads are available when you purchase content through the PlayStation Store website or PlayStation App. The console still needs to be online and configured for background connectivity, and the purchase must be made with the account that has access to the console’s games.

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open Automatic Downloads.
- Enable Application Update Files.
- Return to Settings, open Power Saving Settings, and choose Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
PS4 uses a different menu path from PS5. The key update switch is Application Update Files; the Rest Mode connection setting is separate. Both are needed for unattended background downloads while the console is resting.
After purchasing DLC remotely, leave the PS4 connected and in the permitted Rest Mode state. If the add-on does not appear, open the game’s store or content-management screen and run a manual update check before troubleshooting the account or installation.
Nintendo Switch: use the global automatic-update switch
Enable automatic software updates
- Connect the Switch to the internet.
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Scroll to System.
- Enable Automatic Software Updates.
Nintendo says updates to installed software download automatically while the console is connected. This is a global system control rather than a separate Auto Update toggle on every game.
Run a manual update check
- Highlight the game or application on the HOME Menu.
- Press + or − to open the software options.
- Choose Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet.
Use the manual path after buying DLC, changing the console’s network connection, or finding that the title still shows an older version. Automatic software updates do not grant ownership of an expansion; the Nintendo Account that bought the DLC must be the account being used for the software.

Steam on PC: combine per-game rules with global downloads
Choose the update behavior for one game
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game, or select it and open its properties.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Updates.
- Select the behavior that fits the game:
- Always keep this game updated — Steam places released updates in the download queue according to its global rules.
- Only update this game when I launch it — the update is deferred until you start the game.
- High Priority – Always auto-update this game before others — Steam gives that title priority when several updates are waiting.
The per-game choice matters for DLC because an add-on may be delivered as part of the game’s update or as a separate depot. A title set to update only when launched can appear to be missing content until you start it or change the rule.
Set the global schedule and bandwidth
- Open the Steam menu.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Downloads.
- Review the automatic-update control, the scheduled download window, and any bandwidth limit.
Steam documents a global setting for automatically updating games, a schedule window, and bandwidth limits. A schedule or cap can delay a large DLC package even when the individual game is set to update automatically. If you need the download immediately, adjust the schedule or limit temporarily, then restore your preferred values.
Watch and reorder the queue
Open Steam’s Download Manager to see whether the DLC or patch is queued, active, paused, or waiting behind another item. The manager lets you monitor progress and reorder downloads. Check the queue before assuming that ownership or installation has failed.
Epic Games Launcher: turn on Auto Update per game
- Open the Library in Epic Games Launcher.
- Find the game and select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Manage.
- Turn on Auto Update. Epic says the switch turns blue when it is enabled.
Epic exposes this control per game rather than as one universal switch for every title. Repeat the procedure for each game whose patches or DLC should be downloaded automatically. If the launcher is closed, a download cannot begin until Epic can run its update service; open the launcher and check the Library when you need to force an immediate check.

Why DLC may not install even when automatic updates are on
Work through these checks in order. They separate an account problem from a download problem and then from a game-specific activation problem.
1. Confirm the purchasing account
Check the account currently signed in on the console or launcher against the account that bought the add-on. Automatic downloading cannot add an entitlement to a different account. Family sharing, console sharing, and subscription access can have their own rules, so verify that the account has a current right to use the DLC.
2. Confirm that the add-on is listed as owned
Open the base game’s store page or search the storefront for the DLC. Steam’s official DLC guidance says additional downloadable content can be found from the base-game store page or by searching, then accessed from the Steam Library. The equivalent storefront listing on a console should show whether the item is purchased, available to download, or still for sale.

3. Inspect installed content
Use the platform’s game-management or content-management screen to see whether the add-on is installed. Some games list every expansion separately; others show one combined installation size or expose the activation switch only inside the game. If the platform shows the DLC as owned but not installed, select its download or install command rather than waiting for the global update service.

4. Check the update queue and network state
On Steam, inspect Download Manager. On PlayStation, verify Rest Mode internet connectivity and run the game’s manual update check. On Switch, use Software Update > Via the Internet. In Epic Games Launcher, open the Library and the game’s Manage screen. A paused queue, scheduled window, bandwidth cap, or disconnected console can all make an enabled setting look ineffective.
5. Restart the client or console
Close and reopen the launcher, or restart the console, after confirming ownership. This refreshes the storefront session and gives the platform another opportunity to reconcile the purchase with the installed game. Then repeat the manual update check.
6. Check free storage
DLC packages can be large, and the platform needs enough free disk space to download and install them. If the content-management screen reports insufficient space, remove or move unwanted software, free the required capacity, and retry. An SSD can increase available or usable storage when installed in a supported system, but it does not enable automatic updating; the setting remains software-controlled.
7. Check the game itself
If the platform reports the DLC as installed but the game does not show it, look for an in-game add-on, expansion, or content-management menu. Some titles require an item to be enabled, a save to be reloaded, or a particular in-game location to become available. Those activation rules are determined by the game and are separate from the platform’s download setting.

Power, connection, storage, and bandwidth decisions
Rest Mode and sleep are not the same as being online
A console can be in a low-power state without maintaining an internet connection. On both PlayStation procedures above, Stay Connected to the Internet is the setting that permits background work in Rest Mode. If energy-saving preferences disable network connectivity, downloads wait until the console is active again.
PC launchers need a download opportunity
Steam and Epic are software clients. Their settings describe what should happen when the client can reach the internet; they do not create a network connection for a powered-off computer. Leave the relevant launcher available during the schedule you selected, and account for sleep settings that suspend the computer or its network adapter.

Use limits deliberately
Steam’s schedule and bandwidth controls are useful on a metered or shared connection, but they can postpone a DLC download. A large expansion may remain queued until the permitted window or until the cap is lifted. Once the download finishes, restore the limit that protects your connection.
Accessories are optional fixes, not update switches
An Ethernet cable can improve connection reliability, and an SSD can provide additional storage where the platform supports one. Neither accessory turns on automatic DLC downloads. Start with the platform or launcher setting, then use hardware only to address a demonstrated storage or network constraint.

- Sign in with the account that purchased the base game and DLC.
- Enable the platform’s automatic-update control using the appropriate menu path.
- For PlayStation, enable internet connectivity in Rest Mode; for Switch, keep the console connected; for PC, leave the launcher able to run during its schedule.
- Check the game’s storefront page to confirm that the add-on is owned.
- Open the game’s content-management screen and install or enable any separate DLC item.
- Check available storage before leaving a large download unattended.
- Use a manual update command once after purchase so you can see whether the title is queued, downloading, or already current.
This order prevents a common mistake: changing network or power settings when the actual problem is that the add-on was bought on another account or still needs a separate installation command.

Switch is the simplest for a household that wants one broad policy: its automatic software-update control applies to installed software while the console is online. PlayStation gives more control but requires two decisions: whether to download and whether to install during Rest Mode. PS4 and PS5 also use different menu paths, so instructions for one model should not be copied to the other.
Steam is the most granular on PC. You can let one game always update, defer another until launch, prioritize a third, and then limit the overall schedule or bandwidth. That flexibility is useful when DLC is large or the connection is shared, but it also creates more ways for a download to be waiting rather than failing. Epic is narrower: Auto Update is enabled separately from each game’s Manage screen, so a newly installed title does not automatically inherit a global preference.
Xbox and other consoles
Xbox menu labels and background-update controls can differ by console generation and system version. Because an exact current path cannot be verified here, do not rely on an outdated sequence copied from another model. Use the current Xbox Support instructions for your console, then apply the same diagnostic order used above: verify the purchasing account, confirm the DLC listing, inspect installed content, check the download queue and network state, and run a manual update check.

Does turning on automatic updates purchase DLC for me?
No. Automatic updates download files that the signed-in account is already entitled to use. The add-on must be purchased or provided through an applicable license or subscription, and the game may still require a separate install or activation step.
