Set the server convar sv_cheats to 1. Enter sv_cheats 1 in the dedicated server console or through RCON. The change is immediate, but it lasts only until the server stops unless you add the setting to garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg (or your host’s configuration editor).

What sv_cheats does
sv_cheats is a server-wide console variable. Its default value is 0, which blocks commands marked as cheats in multiplayer. Changing it to 1 unlocks cheat-protected commands for the server session, including commands commonly used for testing and debugging such as noclip, god, buddha, impulse 101 and give.

Once it is enabled, the server permits those commands for connected players who can enter and execute them. It does not create a separate “cheats enabled” permission for one administrator.
Enable cheats immediately from the server console
- Open the dedicated server console, or connect to the server with RCON.
- Enter exactly:
sv_cheats 1- Press Enter and leave the convar enabled for the current session.
- Test the intended command from an authorized player account. For example, try
noclipwhile connected.
The setting takes effect immediately. No map change or server restart is required. If the command is rejected, confirm that the line was entered in the server console or a valid RCON session rather than only in a client console.

Keep cheats enabled after a restart
A console change is temporary. When the server stops or restarts, sv_cheats returns to its configured value unless you save it in the server configuration.
Using server.cfg
- Stop the server before editing configuration files, or use your provider’s supported configuration editor.
- Open
garrysmod/cfg/server.cfgin the server installation. - Add this line on its own:
sv_cheats 1- Save the file and start or restart the server.
- After the server is online, check the setting in the server console with:
sv_cheatsThe console should report a value of 1. A hosting panel may expose the same file through a text-based config editor; in that case, add the line there and apply or restart according to the panel’s instructions.

If a panel regenerates configuration files during deployment, verify the value after the next restart rather than assuming the edit was retained.

How to check whether cheats are working
- Connect to the server with the account that will perform the test.
- Open the in-game developer console.
- Run a cheat-protected command, such as
noclip, if that is the feature you need to test. - Move or use the feature briefly, then run
noclipagain to return to normal movement.
When sv_cheats is off and a player attempts a protected command in multiplayer, Garry’s Mod displays a message beginning Can’t use cheat command
and identifies the command. That message indicates that the server-side convar is still blocking the command; it is not fixed by repeatedly entering the command in the client console.
Who is allowed to turn it on?
The reliable route is the dedicated server console. Remote and in-game permissions can depend on the server’s administration setup. Published hosting instructions disagree about whether a multiplayer operator must be a Super Admin, or whether Super Admin or RCON access is sufficient. Treat the permission requirement as installation-dependent rather than as a universal Garry’s Mod rule.
If the command is denied
- Run
sv_cheats 1in the dedicated server console instead of the in-game console. - If using RCON, verify that the connection is authenticated with the correct password and points to the intended server.
- Check that your account has the server’s required Super Admin or equivalent administration role.
- Test the procedure on a private or staging server before changing a public server.
Because administration frameworks and hosting panels differ, a command that works for one operator may be rejected for another even when both appear to be server administrators.

What happens when you turn cheats off?
Set the value back to its default with:
sv_cheats 0The block applies server-wide again. Cheat-protected commands stop working, and a player who is currently in noclip is dropped out of noclip when the setting is disabled. This makes toggling the convar useful for a controlled test, but it can interrupt players if you change it during normal play.
Why leaving sv_cheats 1 on a public server is risky
With the convar enabled, the server no longer provides the normal cheat-command barrier. Anyone who can access the relevant console commands may be able to use features intended for testing, including flight, invulnerability or item spawning. That can undermine a game session, expose moderation problems and make ordinary player progress meaningless.
- Use it on a private development, sandbox or test server whenever possible.
- Warn connected players before enabling it on a shared server.
- Disable it with
sv_cheats 0as soon as testing is finished. - Remove the persistent line from
server.cfgbefore returning a public server to normal operation. - After a restart, verify the value because a persistent setting can silently keep the server permissive.
Hosting guidance consistently recommends leaving sv_cheats at 0 on live multiplayer servers and using the setting mainly for map testing and debugging.

Use admin permissions instead when you need one person to have an ability
If the goal is to let moderators or builders use a capability without opening cheat commands to every player, leave sv_cheats at 0 and use the permissions system supplied by your administration mod. That approach separates an administrator’s ability from the server-wide cheat gate and is normally safer for a public server.

Sandbox servers also commonly expose a separate noclip-related convar named sbox_noclip. Its exact behavior and interaction with a particular administration setup should be checked on that server; do not assume it replaces sv_cheats for every game mode or command. If you need only controlled noclip access, test the admin permission route on a private copy first.
Troubleshooting checklist
The command says it cannot be used in multiplayer
- Check the server value by entering
sv_cheatsin the server console. - If it reports
0, runsv_cheats 1on the server, not only in the client console. - If it reports
1but the command still fails, reconnect and test again; some administration or game-mode systems can impose their own restrictions.
It worked until the next restart
- Confirm that
sv_cheats 1is present ingarrysmod/cfg/server.cfgor the host’s persistent configuration editor. - Make sure the file was saved on the actual server instance, not a local client installation.
- Restart once and query
sv_cheatsto verify the value after startup.
RCON or the in-game console rejects the command
- Use the dedicated server console, which avoids remote permission ambiguity.
- Check RCON credentials and confirm that the command is being sent to the correct server.
- Ask the server owner to grant the appropriate Super Admin access or execute the command directly.
Noclip stops unexpectedly
Check whether someone ran sv_cheats 0. Disabling the convar immediately blocks protected commands and removes players from active noclip.

Recommended workflow for map testing
- Use a private or staging server rather than a public player server.
- Enable the setting from the server console with
sv_cheats 1. - Run the required test commands and record any results while the same server build and configuration are active.
- Disable cheats with
sv_cheats 0when testing ends. - If the server is being returned to public use, remove the persistent line from
server.cfgand restart.
This workflow keeps the server-wide switch temporary and makes it harder to forget that cheat access is still enabled.
