For a local game, you are the server and can do this yourself. On a dedicated server, you must use its server console or an authorized remote-console/admin method. The command will not give you cheat access in official matchmaking or on a public server where you are not an administrator.

What sv_cheats 1 actually does
sv_cheats is a server-controlled console variable. Setting it to 1 permits commands that carry Counter-Strike 2’s cheat access flag. It is not a universal switch on your Steam account and it is not a client-side hack. The server decides whether the command is enabled, so typing it in a client connected to somebody else’s server cannot grant you permission.

They are useful for movement drills, grenade analysis, map exploration and testing settings. Official matchmaking and most public servers keep this control unavailable to ordinary players.
Enable the CS2 developer console first
- Launch Counter-Strike 2 and open Settings.
- Choose the Game tab.
- Find Enable Developer Console (~) and set it to Yes. Steam’s CS2 guidance uses this exact setting label.
- Apply the setting, then press the key assigned to the tilde/console function (shown as
~in the setting). Your keyboard layout may place that key differently; use the key shown in your controls if the default does not open the console.
You should see a text console overlay. If nothing appears, return to the Game settings and verify that the option is still set to Yes, then check the keyboard binding rather than repeatedly entering commands into chat.

Enable cheats on a local or practice server
A local practice match is the simplest setup because the game instance is also the server. Start the map or workshop practice session normally, open the developer console after you load in, and enter the following command:
sv_cheats 1Press Enter and wait for the console to acknowledge the command. You can then run a cheat-gated practice command. For example:

sv_showimpacts 1Commands can be entered one at a time. If a command has an optional numeric argument, use 1 to enable it and 0 to disable it. noclip, for example, can be toggled without an argument or controlled explicitly with noclip 1 and noclip 0.
Confirm that the server accepted the switch
Use the console to query the variable:
sv_cheatsA value of 1 indicates that the server has the cheat flag enabled. If it reports 0, the server did not accept the change or another server configuration reset it. You can also test a known practice command such as noclip. A command that is still blocked is a sign that you are not issuing the request from the server context or that the server has overridden the setting.
Enable cheats on a dedicated CS2 server
On a dedicated instance, the command must reach the server itself. Use the dedicated server’s local console, or an authorized remote-console (RCON) or administrator mechanism provided by the server operator. A normal player console is not sufficient.

- Connect to the dedicated server through its physical/server console or your approved remote administration tool.
- Issue
sv_cheats 1in that server-side console. - Join the server as a player and open your client console if you need to issue commands that are permitted for your account.
- Run the practice command, or have the administrator run it server-side, depending on the command and the permissions configured for that server.
Server operators should give remote-console access only to trusted administrators. The exact authentication and connection procedure depends on how the dedicated server is hosted; do not expose an unauthenticated administration endpoint just to make practice commands convenient.
Local versus dedicated: choose the right setup

The practical decision is straightforward: use a local server when you want fast, disposable drills; use a dedicated server when several people need a repeatable private environment and you can administer it. Do not select a public match expecting the same commands to work.
Useful CS2 practice commands after enabling cheats
noclip: fly through the map
noclip lets your player move through walls and fly around the map. It is useful for checking grenade lineups, inspecting geometry and reaching a practice position quickly. Toggle it with:
noclipFor explicit control, use noclip 1 to enable and noclip 0 to disable. Remember to turn it off before attempting a normal movement drill; otherwise you may mistake unrestricted flight for a movement result.
sv_infinite_ammo: change ammunition behavior
sv_infinite_ammo changes how ammunition is handled for active weapons. Enable it with:

sv_infinite_ammo 1Use it for recoil, spray and weapon-function practice when you do not want to interrupt the drill to buy or reload. Because the variable changes ammunition behavior, disable it when you need a realistic round economy:
sv_infinite_ammo 0sv_rethrow_last_grenade: repeat the previous throw
sv_rethrow_last_grenade repeats the last grenade throw. This is useful for checking where a smoke, flash, incendiary or HE grenade lands after you move to a different viewing position. Throw the grenade once, reposition with normal movement or noclip, and then run:
sv_rethrow_last_grenadeThe command repeats the recorded throw rather than creating a new lineup, so change your original position or aim only when you are ready to test a different setup.
sv_showimpacts and trajectory information
sv_showimpacts displays projectile impact information for training. A common enable form is:
sv_showimpacts 1CS2 also exposes grenade-trajectory practice variables. Their availability, accepted values and display behavior can change with game updates, so use the console’s command completion and in-game help to inspect the exact variable on your build. If a command is rejected, do not substitute an unrelated client command; check the server’s current command list.

Movement practice variables
The command reference marks movement variables such as sv_enablebunnyhopping and sv_airaccelerate as cheat-related. They can be useful for controlled movement experiments, but they alter the movement model and therefore are not representative of a normal competitive server. Record the values you change and restore them before ending a session so that a later drill starts from known settings.
Why “sv_cheats 1” does not work
You are in matchmaking or on somebody else’s server
This is the most common cause. In a match you do not host, the server owner controls sv_cheats. A player cannot override that decision from the client console. Leave the match and create a local practice session, or ask the dedicated-server administrator to enable the setting for an authorized private session.

The developer console is disabled
If the console never opens, the command has not been sent anywhere. Revisit Settings > Game > Enable Developer Console (~), set it to Yes, and verify the key assigned to open the console. The tilde key shown in the label is a function description, not a guarantee that every keyboard layout places it in the same physical location.
You entered the command in the wrong console
On a dedicated server, a client console and the server console are different contexts. Entering sv_cheats 1 in your client while connected to a server you do not administer cannot change the server variable. Send it through the server console or the operator’s authorized remote administration path instead.
The server resets the value
A configuration file, map change or server-management plugin can restore sv_cheats to 0. Query the value again after loading the map. If it changed, inspect the server’s startup and map configuration, then have an administrator apply the setting after the reset point. Avoid repeatedly spamming the command; determine which server event is overwriting it.

The command name or syntax changed
Valve’s command flags and syntax can change in a game update. The command reference identifies which variables carry the cheat flag, while current in-game console help shows what your installed build accepts. Use autocomplete, enter the command without an argument to inspect its help text where supported, and verify that you are using the current spelling. A command documented for an older build may be unavailable or may require a different value format.
How VAC and server security relate to practice cheats
Secure/VAC status is a separate server control from sv_cheats. Enabling the practice switch does not turn every server into a public cheat-enabled service, and changing a security setting is not a substitute for administrator permission. Keep cheat-enabled sessions private and clearly labeled so players do not mistake a practice configuration for a normal competitive environment.
For a private dedicated server, decide in advance who may join, who may administer it and whether the instance should be exposed to the public server browser. If you need a persistent practice environment for a team, document the intended values and access rules rather than leaving a server permanently configured in an unexpected state.
A repeatable practice workflow
- Start a local match or connect to a dedicated server you administer.
- Open the developer console and run
sv_cheats 1from the server-controlled context. - Query
sv_cheatsto confirm that the value is1. - Enable only the variables needed for the drill, such as
sv_infinite_ammo 1for spray practice orsv_showimpacts 1for projectile analysis. - Use
noclipandsv_rethrow_last_grenadeto inspect grenade routes without repeatedly restarting the map. - Disable temporary variables when the drill is over, using their documented off value where applicable.
- End the local session or restore the dedicated server’s normal configuration before allowing ordinary players to use it.
This workflow keeps the server state understandable: first establish authority, then enable the switch, then change only the practice variables required for the exercise.
What you can and cannot do
- You can: enable cheat-flagged practice commands on a local server you host.
- You can: enable them on a dedicated server when you have authorized administrator access.
- You can: use tools such as noclip, infinite-ammo behavior, grenade rethrows and impact displays for private training.
- You cannot: force
sv_cheatson official matchmaking or a public server controlled by someone else. - You cannot: treat the setting as a client-side account permission or a way to bypass server administration.
- You should not: leave a cheat-enabled configuration exposed to players who expect a normal competitive ruleset.
Turning cheats off
For a temporary local session, leaving the match ends the practice environment. On a dedicated server, turn off the server switch with:

sv_cheats 0Also restore any individual variables you changed, such as sv_infinite_ammo 0 or sv_showimpacts 0, using the values appropriate for your server configuration. Query the variables after changing them so you know the server is back in its intended state.
Bottom line
Enable Settings > Game > Enable Developer Console (~), open the console, and run sv_cheats 1 on a local server or through the console of a dedicated server you administer. Then use the specific practice command you need. If the command fails, the cause is almost always missing server authority, a disabled console, the wrong console context or a changed command definition—not a missing client-side toggle.
