How to Read Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere Books in Order

Brandon Sanderson says you can start the Cosmere with any of five books. Here is the spoiler-conscious series order, optional chronology and guidance for newer standalones and Arcanum Unbounded.

Start with the book that matches your taste, then read that series in sequence. Brandon Sanderson’s official guidance says there is no mandatory Cosmere-wide starting point. His five recommended entry books are Mistborn: The Final Empire, The Emperor’s Soul, The Way of Kings, Elantris and Warbreaker.

Do not begin with a later installment simply because it appears early in a proposed master timeline. Series order is the reliable rule. A cross-series chronology published by Sanderson is explicitly partial, while connections and Easter eggs are optional rewards rather than prerequisites.

The quickest spoiler-conscious reading plan

  1. Choose one entry book: Mistborn: The Final Empire, The Emperor’s Soul, The Way of Kings, Elantris or Warbreaker.
  2. Finish that book before switching worlds. The Emperor’s Soul, Elantris and Warbreaker work as standalone entry points; Mistborn and The Way of Kings open longer sequences.
  3. Read every installment in the chosen series’ publication sequence. Sanderson’s FAQ says he recommends sequential reading instead of entering a series with its second book.
  4. Read later-era Mistborn only after the original trilogy if you want to avoid the author’s stated spoiler warning for The Alloy of Law.
  5. Treat a Cosmere chronology as optional context. It is not a complete, compulsory list.

This plan answers the question many new readers ask: “What order should I read them in?” Start with the premise you actually want, complete the relevant sequence, and only then use cross-world guides to look for connections. You never need to pause a story to consult a master timeline before turning the next page.

What the Cosmere is—and what it is not

The Cosmere is Sanderson’s shared creation myth and cosmology: separate fantasy worlds connected by deeper rules, history and occasional characters. A book can stand on its own while still belonging to that larger setting. The shared framework is an invitation to notice patterns, not a requirement that every story be read before any other.

Sanderson’s official FAQ names Warbreaker, Elantris, Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive as Cosmere works. His catalog also groups Cosmere fiction into the Stormlight Archive, the Mistborn Saga, standalones (including Secret Projects, Elantris and Warbreaker), the White Sand graphic novels and collections.

Skyward and Sanderson’s continuation of The Wheel of Time are not Cosmere books. Do not insert either series into a Cosmere reading list simply because the same author wrote them. A complete Sanderson bibliography is much larger than the Cosmere, so identify the setting before building a reading checklist.

Pick your starting book

There is no universally correct first book. The useful question is what level of commitment and which style of fantasy you want before investing in a sequence. Sanderson’s own entry-point advice gives readers permission to choose by taste.

Start with Best fit Commitment Important qualification
Mistborn: The Final Empire Readers looking for a fast-moving fantasy series Beginning of the original Mistborn trilogy Read the trilogy before moving to the later Wax and Wayne era if you want to avoid the stated The Alloy of Law spoiler.
The Emperor’s Soul Readers who want a shorter introduction to the setting Standalone novella It is a complete entry point, but its world is not a substitute for reading a longer series in order.
The Way of Kings Readers ready for an expansive epic fantasy Opening volume of the Stormlight Archive Continue through the preceding Stormlight volumes before reading Wind and Truth, book five and the climax of the first arc.
Elantris Readers who do not usually read fantasy, according to Sanderson’s suggestion Standalone novel No other Cosmere book is required first.
Warbreaker Readers especially interested in romance, according to Sanderson’s suggestion Standalone novel It can be read before or after another Cosmere series; there is no required universal starting point.

These are the author’s suggested entry points, not a ranking of quality. Selecting one because its premise appeals to you is safer than forcing yourself through a different series to obey an unofficial timeline. If you want the smallest commitment, choose the novella. If you want a trilogy, choose Mistborn. If you want the broadest epic scale, choose The Way of Kings. If you want a standalone novel, choose Elantris or Warbreaker.

A decision guide for different readers

  • New to fantasy: Sanderson suggests Elantris as an approachable entry point for someone who does not typically read fantasy.
  • Romance-led reading: Sanderson specifically points romance-minded readers toward Warbreaker.
  • Fast series momentum: Begin with Mistborn: The Final Empire, then stay with its original trilogy before exploring another era.
  • Short-form testing: The Emperor’s Soul gives you a complete novella before you commit to a multi-volume sequence.
  • Large-scale epic fantasy: The Way of Kings begins the Stormlight Archive, the most substantial commitment among the five recommended starts.
  • Curiosity about Hoid’s Travails: Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter can be approached in either order under Sanderson’s 2025 guidance.

These comparisons describe commitment and author-supplied suggestions, not objective quality scores. Your preferred starting point is the one whose format and premise make you most likely to keep reading.

Read each series in its own order

Mistborn

The spoiler-safe beginner route is:

  1. Mistborn: The Final Empire
  2. The Well of Ascension
  3. The Hero of Ages

That is the original Mistborn trilogy. Only after those books should a first-time reader decide whether to continue into the later Mistborn era, commonly called the Wax and Wayne era. The author specifically warns that The Alloy of Law can reveal information from the original trilogy. The warning is about entering that later era early; it is not a claim that every Mistborn-related story must be read in one rigid Cosmere-wide position.

If you have already read the original trilogy, continue with the later Mistborn books in their published sequence. A later-era installment may look like an easy entry because it has a different tone and setting, but a new reader should treat it as a continuation, not as a spoiler-free substitute for book one. Check the current series listing for the exact edition and format you are buying, because catalogs can change.

The Stormlight Archive

Begin with The Way of Kings and continue through the Stormlight Archive’s volumes in order. The official series page identifies Wind and Truth as book five and the climax of the first arc. It should therefore follow the four preceding volumes, not serve as a starting point for the archive.

Stormlight is the largest commitment among Sanderson’s recommended entry routes. Its scale makes internal sequence more important than trying to place every other Cosmere novel around it. Read the archive’s main volumes consecutively, then use any associated novella or short story only after checking which earlier book it assumes. A collection or a convenient digital listing does not change the order of the primary novels.

If you choose Stormlight first, you do not need to stop after each volume to read another world. Finish the arc’s available main sequence at your own pace, then branch into standalones or short fiction. This keeps character development and major reveals in the order the series presents them.

Elantris

Elantris is a standalone entry point. You can read it first without a prerequisite Cosmere novel. Its position in Sanderson’s publicly confirmed broad chronology is also first among the works listed there, but that fact is optional context rather than an instruction to begin with it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because it is standalone, Elantris is also a useful reset between longer series. Reading it does not obligate you to begin the entire Cosmere afterward; you can decide whether you want Mistborn, Stormlight, another standalone or short fiction next.

Warbreaker

Warbreaker is another standalone beginning. Sanderson has specifically suggested it for readers who like romance. Reading it before a longer series is a sensible way to sample the Cosmere without committing to a multi-volume sequence.

You may place it before or after another series according to your interests. The broad chronology lists it after the original Mistborn trilogy, but that placement is not a prerequisite for understanding the novel itself.

The Emperor’s Soul

The Emperor’s Soul is a short standalone entry and one of Sanderson’s five recommended starting books. It is useful when you want a complete story before choosing between the longer Mistborn and Stormlight paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its short-fiction status does not make it a footnote. It is a complete Cosmere experience and can be read independently, even though the chronology FAQ places it after Elantris in its broad confirmed sequence.

Where newer standalone novels fit

Sanderson’s 2025 State of the Sanderson places Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter among “Hoid’s Travails.” The update says they have no specific numbers because Sanderson considers them readable in any order. That guidance is newer than the older chronology FAQ, so do not force either novel into that earlier list as though it had an official fixed position.

You may read Tress first, Yumi first or both after another Cosmere series. The practical choice is to use the one whose premise interests you, while remembering that recognizing wider Cosmere connections is optional. Neither book requires a single master sequence according to the 2025 update.

This newer note illustrates why a static all-in-one list can become misleading. An older FAQ can remain useful for the sequence it confirms while a later author update adds a different rule for newer books. When the two pieces of guidance address different groups of books, follow the more specific and newer statement for those titles.

The publicly confirmed chronology

Sanderson’s chronology FAQ introduces its list with the qualification, “Here is the order that I have publicly confirmed.” It also says the list omits other books and stories that fit into the chronology. Use it as a high-level map, not as a complete reading checklist.

Broad chronological position Works or era named by Sanderson How to use it
1 Elantris Standalone opening point if you want to follow the broad map.
2 The Emperor’s Soul Standalone novella; chronology does not override its independent entry-point status.
3 Original Mistborn trilogy Read the three books in series order.
4 Warbreaker Standalone novel; also an author-recommended entry point.
5 Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell Short fiction placement in the broad list, not a command to read every collection at this point.
6 The Stormlight Archive Read the archive’s volumes sequentially; Wind and Truth is book five and closes the first arc.
7 Wax and Wayne era Mistborn Approach after the original trilogy to avoid the stated The Alloy of Law spoiler issue.
8 Sixth of the Dusk Chronology position supplied by the FAQ; short fiction still needs its own spoiler context.
9 Future Mistborn trilogy Listed as future in the chronology guidance; availability and sequence can change.

The table deliberately says “broad” and “publicly confirmed.” It does not claim to include every novella, secret project, graphic novel, or short story, and it does not establish a spoiler-free order for every cross-series appearance. The author’s own FAQ makes the limitation explicit.

Chronology is most useful for readers who enjoy fictional history, world maps and long-range connections. It is less useful as a first-read instruction because it can place a standalone beside a series installment without explaining the assumptions or reveal level of every related story. A chronological list can also separate books that are best experienced together within their own series.

How to handle Arcanum Unbounded

Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection is a convenient physical collection, but it is not one single novel set in one location. The official description includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “The Hope of Elantris”
  • “The Eleventh Metal”
  • “The Emperor’s Soul”
  • “Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania”
  • A White Sand excerpt
  • “Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell”
  • “Sixth of the Dusk”
  • Mistborn: Secret History
  • The Stormlight novella Edgedancer

The collection also contains essays and illustrations about the planetary systems. Because its stories span several worlds and series, reading it from the first page to the last is not automatically spoiler-safe. Identify a story’s setting and series before starting it, then read the relevant parent novel or sequence first when the story clearly assumes that context.

Why collection order is not enough

A bound collection gives you physical convenience, not a universal placement rule. For example, a story connected to Mistborn may reveal information that is harmless after one era but surprising before it; a Stormlight novella may assume events from earlier archive volumes. The collection description establishes what is included, but it does not provide a comprehensive spoiler-safe order for every item.

Do not assume that a story’s position in the table of contents is a recommendation from Sanderson. Instead, treat each item as its own reading decision. “The Emperor’s Soul” can serve as a starting novella, while “Edgedancer” belongs with Stormlight context and “Mistborn: Secret History” deserves particular care around Mistborn-era spoilers. If you are uncertain, finish the parent series named in the story’s description before opening it.

Three practical reading paths

Path A: the shortest commitment

  1. Read The Emperor’s Soul.
  2. If you want another standalone, choose Elantris or Warbreaker.
  3. Move to Mistborn or Stormlight only if you want a longer sequence.

This path lets you test Sanderson’s Cosmere before beginning a trilogy or an epic archive. It also makes it easy to stop after one complete story without leaving a multi-book plot unfinished.

Path B: the classic series route

  1. Read the original Mistborn trilogy: The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages.
  2. Continue into the Wax and Wayne era in its own publication order.
  3. Add standalones and short fiction after checking their series context.

This route keeps the author’s explicit The Alloy of Law spoiler warning in view. It also gives you a clear stopping point after the original trilogy before you decide whether to continue with later Mistborn books.

Path C: the epic-fantasy route

  1. Start with The Way of Kings.
  2. Read the next three Stormlight volumes in sequence.
  3. Read Wind and Truth as book five, after those preceding volumes.
  4. Explore other Cosmere worlds between arcs or after completing the first Stormlight arc.

This approach prioritizes one large narrative rather than interrupting it to chase a cross-series timeline. It is especially suitable if your main reason for reading Sanderson is an expansive epic rather than a tour of every connected world.

How to choose between series order and chronology

  • Choose series order when you are reading a series for the first time, want the fewest skipped assumptions, or are sensitive to reveals.
  • Choose the broad chronology only when you enjoy mapping fictional history and accept that the published list is incomplete.
  • Choose Easter-egg hunting on a reread. Sanderson says inter-book details can enrich rereading, but they are not required to enjoy individual books.

The same book can therefore have two valid positions: its place inside its own series, which is firm, and its place among all Cosmere worlds, which may be approximate or not publicly settled.

Warbreaker: A Cosmere Novel

A first read is about narrative clarity. A reread can be about recognition: noticing repeated names, ideas or cosmological details after you already know the individual plots. Keeping those goals separate prevents spoiler anxiety from turning a flexible reading project into homework.

Common mistakes to avoid

Starting with The Alloy of Law because it looks approachable

It can be an entry point for some readers, but Sanderson attaches a spoiler caveat about the original Mistborn trilogy. If this is your first Cosmere experience, begin with Mistborn: The Final Empire instead.

Treating the chronology as complete

The chronology FAQ says it covers only what Sanderson has publicly confirmed. Missing stories are not evidence that they have no chronological position.

Reading every story in Arcanum Unbounded consecutively

Its contents cross settings and series. Check each story’s context rather than assuming the collection’s table of contents is a spoiler-free sequence.

Mixing non-Cosmere books into the list

Skyward and The Wheel of Time belong outside this reading plan.

Waiting for a perfect order before beginning

Sanderson’s primary advice is permissive: “That said, it really doesn’t matter which Cosmere series you start with.” Pick a recommended entry book and let your preferred series order do the rest.

Assuming every connection must be understood immediately

Individual books are designed to be enjoyed without a complete cosmological briefing. If a name, setting detail or recurring idea is unfamiliar, continue with the story rather than stopping to solve the entire universe. Explanations and connections are optional enrichment.

Reader questions to settle before you start

Do I have to read the books in publication order across the entire Cosmere?

No. Read sequentially within the series you choose. Sanderson has not presented one compulsory publication order for every world, novella and collection.

Can I switch worlds after a standalone?

Yes. Elantris, Warbreaker and The Emperor’s Soul are all independent entry points, so you can use one as a complete story and then choose a different series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I read a chronology before choosing a first book?

Not unless mapping the fictional timeline is your main interest. The author’s five entry recommendations are meant to make starting easy without preliminary chronology work.

What if I care more about spoilers than connections?

Stay inside one series at a time, follow its internal sequence, and postpone cross-series short fiction until you have checked its context. Most importantly, read the original Mistborn trilogy before The Alloy of Law.

Can I read the two Hoid’s Travails novels back to back?

Yes. Sanderson’s 2025 update says Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter have no specific numbers and can be read in any order.

Keeping your list current

Book catalogs, formats and series pages change as new editions and stories appear. Before buying or borrowing, check the current listing for the title, language and format you need. Recheck Sanderson’s official reading guidance when a new Cosmere novel or short-fiction collection is announced, especially if you are building a chronology rather than following one series.

Official Sanderson sources were checked on October 13, 2026. The older chronology FAQ remains useful for its confirmed broad sequence, while the 2025 State of the Sanderson supplies the newer “any order” note for Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. Future books, editions and catalog groupings may add context without changing the basic rule: choose an entry point, then respect the sequence of that series.

Frequently Asked Questions

What order should I read the Cosmere books in?

Start with any of Sanderson’s five recommended entry books, then read that series sequentially. The five are Mistborn: The Final Empire, The Emperor’s Soul, The Way of Kings, Elantris and Warbreaker.

Can I start with Tress of the Emerald Sea or Yumi and the Nightmare Painter?

Yes. Sanderson’s 2025 update says the two “Hoid’s Travails” novels have no specific numbers and can be read in any order.

Do I need to read every Cosmere book to understand one series?

No. Start with one of the five recommended entry books and follow its series sequence. Cross-series connections and Easter eggs are optional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I read the original Mistborn trilogy before The Alloy of Law?

Yes, if you want to avoid Sanderson’s stated spoiler warning. Read Mistborn: The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages first.

Is the published Cosmere chronology definitive?

No. Sanderson describes it as the order he has publicly confirmed and says other books and stories fit into the chronology. It is a partial guide, not a compulsory master order.

Should I read Arcanum Unbounded from beginning to end?

Not automatically. Its stories span multiple worlds and series, so place each story according to its own series context and spoiler requirements.

Where does Wind and Truth belong?

It is book five of the Stormlight Archive and the climax of the first arc. Read the four preceding Stormlight volumes before it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Skyward and The Wheel of Time part of the Cosmere?

No. They are Sanderson works outside the Cosmere and should not be inserted into a Cosmere reading order.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the Cosmere entry point that fits your taste, read its series in order, and treat the cross-world chronology as optional. Start the original Mistborn trilogy before The Alloy of Law, place Wind and Truth after the first four Stormlight volumes, and approach Arcanum Unbounded story by story.
