Rockstar acknowledged on August 26, 2026, that videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay had leaked—but that confirms a leak event, not the authenticity of every clip, repost, watermark, map, or claim circulating online. To assess a video, trace its earliest available source, separate what it shows from what its uploader says, compare specific claims with Rockstar’s published material, and look for corroborating evidence. If the evidence does not settle it, call the clip unverified.
Start with Rockstar’s official baseline
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page is the primary public reference for material the company has released. It currently presents Trailer 1, Trailer 2, and “An Extended Look,” along with official videos, screenshots, and other media. Its published details identify Jason and Lucia and place the story in Leonida, including Vice City. Compare a clip’s concrete claims with those materials rather than relying on a repost’s caption.

A third-party upload can contain genuine official footage and still add an unsupported description, voice-over, or claim about a feature. Check official-looking material against Rockstar’s page or linked official channel. Rockstar’s page also lists PlayStation 5 and presents the game for preorder; those details provide context, but they do not authenticate a video.

What Rockstar’s leak acknowledgment proves—and what it doesn’t
On August 26, 2026, Rockstar Games said, in a statement reported by Tom’s Hardware, that videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay had leaked. That is strong evidence that gameplay videos leaked in general. It is not an item-by-item authentication of the clips now being shared, nor confirmation that any particular clip is unedited, from a specific build, or accurately described by its uploader.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Axios reported on August 21, before Rockstar’s statement, that the company had not then officially confirmed the purported circulating footage and that people were debating whether clips were genuine or edits of GTA V. The later acknowledgment updates the status of the general leak event; it does not establish that every clip in that earlier or later circulation is real.
A takedown notice or apparent watermark may be a clue that protected material or a particular account is involved. Neither proves that every frame is untouched, that the footage shows the final build, or that the accompanying explanation is true.
Use this workflow to assess a specific clip
1. Trace the earliest available source
- Find the earliest upload you can locate. Note whether the account claims firsthand access or says it is reposting someone else’s video.
- Prefer the original file and its full description over a cropped screen recording. A popular repost is not an independently authenticated original.
- Look for a coherent account of how the uploader obtained the footage and whether Rockstar, Take-Two, or credible independent reporting has addressed that particular material.
- If the trail ends at an anonymous repost, describe the clip as unverified. Confidence, popularity, and a “100% real” watermark are not proof of provenance.
2. Write down the exact claim
Separate what is visibly in the video from what the post asserts. Is the claim that it is official gameplay, a leak, a beta, a full build, a map reveal, or proof of a particular mechanic? Record any stated date, platform, character, location, or version, then check each factual assertion against Rockstar’s published material.

A confirmed contradiction—such as a claimed character or location that conflicts with official information—is more meaningful than a difference in visual quality. So is an incompatible platform or release claim presented as established final-build fact. A contradiction can discredit a caption without proving that every frame in the video is fabricated.
3. Compare like with like
When comparing a scene with official footage, choose material with a similar camera distance and lighting. Look at interface typography, minimap shape, button prompts, vehicle surfaces, animation timing, and camera response. Treat mismatches as leads to investigate, not verdicts: development footage may use temporary interface elements or unfinished animation, while a skilled creator can imitate a visual style.
Trailers are edited presentations, not neutral demonstrations of every part of a game. Exceptional polish does not prove a clip is real, and roughness does not prove it is fake.

4. Follow objects and sound through the full clip
Slow playback and track details across consecutive frames. Possible warning signs include road markings, shadows, or reflections changing without an apparent cause; car panels, wheels, or plates reshaping; interface icons drifting; objects merging or appearing after being occluded; text changing between frames; and collisions where contact, momentum, or damage do not line up.
Listen for voices or effects that do not match visible events and ambient sounds that appear to loop. Any one odd frame is weak evidence: compression, motion blur, interpolation, upscaling, edits, dubbing, and ordinary game bugs can all create confusing artifacts. Look for multiple independent inconsistencies and keep your conclusion proportionate to the evidence.
5. Treat platform labels and credentials as clues, not detectors
YouTube’s policy says creators must disclose realistic content that is meaningfully altered or generated with AI in specified circumstances, and YouTube may add labels. A “Made with AI” label indicates meaningful alteration or synthetic generation, but its appearance depends on disclosure, platform handling, and available metadata. A missing label does not establish authenticity.

YouTube’s help information says some “Captured with a camera” disclosures rely on supported C2PA 2.1-or-higher technology and an unbroken provenance chain. The feature appears only when creators use the relevant technology. Re-encoding, screen recording, or reposting can remove or interrupt useful metadata, so missing credentials do not establish that a clip is fake. Labels and credentials are one evidence layer; they cannot authenticate every caption or claim.
6. Find earlier versions and surrounding context
Look for the longest available version and watch what happens before and after the viral moment. A post may show a concept scene, a modded GTA V video, footage from another game, or a compilation that combines plausible-looking footage with fabricated interface elements or narration. Search distinctive frames for earlier uploads and read the original creator’s description: reposts can strip away a concept disclosure. A failed reverse-image search does not prove a clip is original.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a confidence label that matches the evidence
| Label | When it fits | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Official | Rockstar or a clearly authorized source published it. | An official-looking repost or caption is not enough; check the original source. |
| Credibly authenticated | Strong provenance, credible independent reporting, or direct rights-holder evidence supports the material, though Rockstar has not released it as official media. | It does not automatically prove every interpretation, claimed feature, or build detail. |
| Unverified | The footage may look plausible, but there is not enough evidence to authenticate its origin or claims. | “Unverified” is not the same as “fake.” |
| Demonstrably false or mislabeled | The creator identifies it as a concept, an earlier source shows it predates the claim, or clear evidence ties it to another game or a synthetic source. | One warped frame alone is not proof that footage is AI-generated. |
Keep the label narrow. Evidence that a leak happened does not prove a particular video is genuine, and authentic footage would not by itself prove every claim attached to it.
Do not install a “leaked build” to verify a video
Assess the video as media; you do not need a game build, “unlocker,” extension, or archive. Tom’s Guide reported that security researchers at Kaspersky had identified fake preorder pages and a purported beta download promoted as a leak, with the download installing malware.
Quick Recap
- Do not run an executable or password-protected archive offered as a way to verify footage.
- Do not enter payment or login details on a page reached through a leak post.
- Use Rockstar’s official site for announcements and released media.
