Windows 10 can run HDR through Advanced Color, but the per-app switch named Use legacy display ICC color management is not a universal Windows 10 feature. Microsoft’s current ICC documentation lists the compatibility helper as available starting with Windows 11. Some early Windows 10 preview-build instructions reported seeing it, so a Windows 10 installation may show the checkbox, but you should treat its absence as normal rather than assume the system is misconfigured. If the option is present, enable it in the target executable’s Properties > Compatibility page, then reopen the app while Advanced Color is active on an HDR-capable display.
What does “Use legacy display ICC color management” actually do?
The checkbox is a compatibility layer for older applications that manage display color through ICC profiles. It is not the Windows HDR master switch, and it is not a way to turn an SDR monitor into an HDR display. The helper matters only when Windows Advanced Color is active and the application’s existing ICC workflow needs to understand the display’s wider color capabilities.

Why legacy ICC applications can look limited in HDR mode
Advanced Color changes how Windows presents a display to applications. By default, a legacy ICC-managed application is treated as though its display target were sRGB, even when the connected monitor can reproduce a wider gamut. That can cause saturated colors to be clipped or compressed when an HDR-capable, wide-gamut display is in use.
When the compatibility helper is enabled, Windows supplies the application with a synthetic display profile derived from the display capability data currently available to the operating system. The application can then continue using its existing ICC color-management path while targeting the display gamut exposed by Advanced Color.

What Windows changes inside the app process
Windows applies the conversion to the application process as a whole. That includes content that is not itself color-managed, so enabling the helper can alter the appearance of interface elements, previews, or embedded material that the application does not tag with an ICC profile. This process-wide behavior is why the result can differ from a simple correction applied only to an image canvas.
What the helper cannot provide
- It does not make a legacy application Advanced Color-aware.
- It does not independently grant higher precision, extra bit depth, or native HDR rendering features.
- It does not replace the application’s own gamut-mapping decisions; those decisions remain in the existing ICC workflow.
- It has no effect on a standard SDR display, even if the checkbox can be selected.
- It does not bypass graphics-driver, cable, monitor, or Windows HDR requirements.
Microsoft’s guidance is that applications seeking the full benefits of Advanced Color need code changes of their own. Such applications should use display-capability APIs rather than directly interacting with display ICC profiles.

Microsoft’s current documentation says the legacy ICC compatibility helper is available starting with Windows 11. Windows 10 does support HDR-related Advanced Color, but that fact does not establish that every Windows 10 release, edition, or build contains this per-application control.
| Windows context | What is established | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 version 1709 and later | Advanced Color support for HDR displays first shipped in version 1709. | HDR may work when the display, GPU, driver, and signal format meet the requirements; the ICC checkbox is not guaranteed. |
| Windows 10 version 2004 and later | Microsoft’s DirectX HDR guidance uses this baseline for HDR displays. | Use the current Windows 10 build and hardware capability as the deciding factors, not the version number alone. |
| Windows 10 preview build 21382 or later | An older third-party guide reported seeing the option in this development period. | This is a historical build-specific report, not confirmation that supported Windows 10 installations expose the control. |
| Windows 11 | Microsoft’s ICC documentation lists the helper as available starting with Windows 11. | The documented Compatibility-tab procedure is the supported path when the option is shown. |
Windows 11 version 22H2 also added Advanced Color support for certain specially provisioned SDR displays. That Windows 11 capability does not retroactively add the ICC helper to Windows 10.
What display and PC requirements apply?
The checkbox cannot create HDR capability. Microsoft’s HDR guidance discusses an HDR10 display using the BT.2100 ST.2084 transfer function, together with compatible graphics hardware and drivers. Exact support depends on the monitor, connection, GPU, driver, and Windows configuration.

Check these conditions before changing an app
- The monitor advertises HDR support and is connected through a path that can carry the required signal.
- The graphics adapter and driver support the HDR mode you intend to use.
- HDR or Advanced Color is enabled for the display in Windows display settings; labels can vary by Windows release.
- The application is genuinely using a display-ICC workflow. An app that ignores ICC profiles will not gain color management from this helper.
- The application is fully closed before you edit its compatibility properties.
If the display is SDR-only, concentrate on normal ICC calibration and application color settings instead. Selecting the compatibility option on such a system does not produce HDR output.
How do I enable the helper for an app?
Apply the setting to the executable that launches the color-managed program, not to a random document or monitor profile. The exact shortcut menu can vary with the way an app was packaged, but the documented control is on the executable’s Compatibility tab.
- Close the application. Exit all of its windows and, if it has a background launcher, close that as well. Compatibility properties are safest to change while the process is not running.
- Locate the executable. If you have a desktop or Start-menu shortcut, open its file location or use its Properties dialog to identify the target. For packaged applications, Windows may expose a different launcher or a restricted install location; choose the executable that actually starts the program.
- Open the executable’s Properties. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Select the Compatibility tab. Look for the color-management compatibility section. Windows builds and application packaging can change the surrounding labels.
- Enable the checkbox. Select Use legacy display ICC color management if it is present.
- Apply the change. Choose Apply, then OK. If Windows requests elevation, approve it only if you have verified that you are editing the intended program.
- Activate Advanced Color for the display. In Windows display settings, turn on HDR for the monitor you are using, when the hardware and driver expose that control.
- Reopen the application. The helper is evaluated when the process runs, so an already-open instance may continue using its previous color path.
There is no separate system-wide “ICC HDR” switch. If several applications need the behavior, configure each executable independently and test them one at a time.
What if the checkbox is missing on Windows 10?
A missing checkbox is usually a version or support-status issue, not evidence that you missed a hidden HDR setting. Microsoft’s current documentation does not promise the helper on Windows 10, so do not force-enable an undocumented registry value or compatibility flag.
Confirm the Windows build
Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, version, and OS build. A Windows 10 installation can have HDR support while still lacking this per-app control. An older guide referring to build 21382 describes an early development state and should not be treated as a guarantee for a current release.

Confirm that you are editing the real executable
Some shortcuts point to launchers, update stubs, or a different architecture of the program. Use the shortcut’s file-location command, then inspect the executable that remains running in Task Manager after launch. The Compatibility tab belongs to that file; changing a shortcut that does not own the process will not change the app’s color behavior.
Use a supported alternative
If the helper is unavailable, the reliable choices are to use an application that is already Advanced Color-aware or to run the legacy application in a color-managed workflow appropriate to its display. Microsoft recommends that Advanced Color-aware software use APIs such as DisplayInformation::GetAdvancedColorInfo or IDXGIOutput6 and avoid directly handling display ICC profiles.
Why might enabling it appear to do nothing?
The helper only participates when all of its prerequisites line up. Work through the following branches rather than assuming the checkbox failed.
HDR is not enabled for the active monitor
Advanced Color is display-specific. If Windows is driving a second monitor, a dock output, or a different input than the one you checked, the app may be running on a display where HDR is disabled or unavailable. Enable HDR on the display used by the app and move the window there before comparing results.
The monitor is SDR or the signal is limited
Microsoft states that the helper has no effect on a standard SDR display. A monitor can advertise a wide gamut without supporting HDR10, and a driver or connection can restrict the available mode. In that case, the checkbox cannot supply missing HDR capability.

The application does not use ICC display profiles
The switch is designed for legacy ICC-managed applications. A program that performs its own rendering, ignores the display profile, or already uses Advanced Color APIs may show little or no change. Games and video players often have their own HDR pipelines, so the presence of an ICC profile on Windows does not prove that this helper is relevant to them.
The app was not restarted
Close every process belonging to the application, including launchers that keep a worker process alive, and start it again. Compare the same image or test scene under identical monitor settings; changing the monitor’s picture mode at the same time can hide the effect of the compatibility layer.
The result is still wrong after a restart
Check the application’s own working-space, proofing, and gamut-mapping settings. The helper preserves those existing choices; it does not select a new working space or correct an incorrectly assigned image profile. Also check whether Windows has changed the active display profile after a monitor, dock, or driver change.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How is the helper different from a native Advanced Color app?
The two approaches solve different problems. The compatibility helper lets an older ICC workflow operate against current display capability data; a native Advanced Color implementation is designed to understand those capabilities directly.
| Decision point | Legacy ICC helper | Advanced Color-aware application |
|---|---|---|
| Primary target | Existing applications that depend on display ICC behavior. | Software updated to use modern display-capability APIs. |
| Configuration | Per executable through Properties > Compatibility. | Handled by the application’s rendering code and display detection. |
| Windows availability | Microsoft documents availability starting with Windows 11; Windows 10 presence is not assured. | Depends on the application version and the Windows APIs it supports. |
| Color-management behavior | Windows supplies a synthetic profile based on current display capability data and converts the process. | The application can make its own Advanced Color decisions using the supported APIs. |
| Precision and HDR features | Does not independently add higher precision, bit depth, or native HDR rendering. | Can obtain those benefits only if the application implements them and the hardware supports them. |
Choose the helper when an older ICC-dependent program is otherwise usable and the checkbox is available. Choose native Advanced Color software when the workflow requires explicit HDR rendering, modern precision, or reliable behavior across multiple display types.

How should photographers and other color-critical users validate the result?
Use a repeatable comparison instead of judging a random screen. Open a known image or test document, keep the monitor preset and Windows HDR state fixed, and record which display is active. Compare the application before and after restarting it with the helper enabled.
- Inspect saturated colors near the monitor’s gamut boundary, where an sRGB assumption is most likely to be visible.
- Check neutral gradients and shadows for abrupt changes introduced by the application’s own mapping.
- Look at interface elements as well as the document canvas, because Windows’ conversion covers the process and may affect unmanaged content.
- Do not interpret a brighter picture alone as proof of correct HDR; luminance, gamut, tone mapping, and profile assignment are separate variables.
- Save the original application settings before experimenting so you can return to the prior workflow.
A colorimeter or a new ICC profile is not required to perform this setting change. Calibration can be useful for a separate color-management problem, but it cannot make an SDR display satisfy HDR10 requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should you remember before relying on this setting?
- On Windows 10, first verify whether your own build actually exposes the checkbox; Microsoft’s current documentation does not guarantee it.
- The switch is per application and per executable, not a global HDR control.
- Advanced Color must be active, and the display must support the relevant HDR mode for any visible effect.
- The helper improves legacy ICC gamut handling but does not convert old software into a native Advanced Color renderer.
- When the option is absent, use an Advanced Color-aware application or an appropriate legacy color workflow rather than undocumented system tweaks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enable this option for every app at once?
No. The documented control is stored in an executable’s compatibility properties, so it must be applied to each relevant program. Enabling HDR for the monitor itself does not automatically add the ICC compatibility behavior to unrelated applications.
Will changing the display’s ICC profile make the checkbox appear?
No. The availability of the checkbox is determined by Windows support and the properties dialog, not by which profile file is installed. A profile change may alter color output, but it does not add a missing compatibility control.
Does the setting work when an HDR laptop is connected to an external monitor?
It can affect an app only while Advanced Color is active on the display where the app is rendered. Laptop and external-panel capabilities are independent, so test each display separately and confirm which one Windows has enabled for HDR.
Should I turn this on for a game that has an HDR menu?
Usually not as a first step. A game with its own HDR renderer may not use display ICC profiles, and the helper is intended for legacy ICC-managed applications; use the game’s HDR controls and Windows display configuration unless the developer documents ICC dependence.
Can this repair clipped highlights or incorrect tone mapping?
Not by itself. The helper addresses how a legacy ICC workflow targets the display gamut, while highlight clipping and tone mapping can come from the application, the source image, the display preset, or the HDR pipeline. Diagnose those controls separately.
