To enable HDR on an Xbox Series S or Series X, turn on the HDR or enhanced-HDMI setting for the TV input, connect the console through an HDMI path that supports HDR10, then open Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options > Advanced > Video modes and select Allow HDR10. Select Allow 4K when the connected display and HDMI path support 4K. Use 4K TV details to confirm that Xbox detects the capability; green checkmarks show which parts of the setup are working.
The procedure is the same on both consoles, but the cable guidance differs: Xbox recommends the supplied Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for Series X, while Series S supports High Speed or Premium HDMI cabling. Any AV receiver or soundbar between the Xbox and TV must pass the same signal.

HDR is a complete signal path, not a feature that a console checkbox can create. The television, the specific HDMI input, the cable and any receiver or soundbar in between must all report HDR10 support to Xbox.
- An HDR10-capable television or monitor.
- An HDMI input on that display with its HDR, enhanced-bandwidth or deep-color mode enabled.
- A suitable HDMI cable. Xbox recommends the supplied Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with Series X; Series S works with High Speed or Premium HDMI cabling.
- A receiver or soundbar that can pass the required video signal, if one is installed between the console and display.
- Current firmware on the TV and any intermediary equipment when troubleshooting compatibility.
A 4K display is not mandatory for every HDR setup. However, the available resolution and HDR features are limited by what the connected display path reports, so a 4K-capable path provides the broadest set of Xbox options.

How do I enable HDR on the TV input?
First select the HDMI input used by the Xbox and enable the television’s HDR or enhanced-signal mode. Manufacturers use different labels, and the setting is often specific to each port.
| TV manufacturer | Setting name identified for HDR-capable HDMI input |
|---|---|
| Samsung | Input Signal Plus |
| LG | HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color |
| Sony | Enhanced format |
| Philips | HDMI mode: Normal |
| Panasonic | Use the model’s HDR or HDMI 2.1 control |
| Vizio | Use the model’s HDR or HDMI control |
Open the TV’s input or external-device settings, choose the exact port where the Xbox is connected, and turn on the relevant option. If the television has several HDMI sockets, do not assume they all have identical capabilities. Use the port whose enhanced, HDR or high-bandwidth mode you enabled.

Connect the console directly to the HDR-capable TV input for the first setup. This removes an AV receiver or soundbar as a possible cause of a missing HDR signal.
Series X cable guidance
Xbox recommends the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supplied with Series X. Use that cable first when checking a new installation or diagnosing a failed HDR handshake.
Series S cable guidance
Series S supports High Speed or Premium HDMI cabling. A certified replacement cable is preferable to an unverified cable when the console does not detect HDR.
Receivers and soundbars
An AV receiver or soundbar must pass the required resolution and HDR signal. If HDR is unavailable through the equipment, connect the Xbox directly to the TV as a diagnostic test. Once video is working, return audio to the receiver or soundbar through ARC or eARC if the equipment supports it.

- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Open General, then TV & display options.
- Under video fidelity and overscan, leave Auto-detect selected whenever possible. This lets the console read the capabilities reported by the HDMI path.
- Open Advanced, then Video modes.
- Check Allow HDR10.
- Check Allow 4K when the display and HDMI path support 4K and you want the console to use that resolution.
HDR10 is the baseline HDR mode exposed by this setup. Optional formats or gaming features appear only when the connected display reports support for them.
How can I confirm that HDR is working?
Return to Settings > General > TV & display options and open 4K TV details. This screen is Xbox’s diagnostic report for the current television, HDMI port, cable and receiver path.
- A green checkmark means Xbox detects the corresponding capability.
- Missing HDR checkmarks indicate that at least one part of the path is not reporting HDR support.
- Missing 4K checkmarks concern the 4K capability specifically; they do not by themselves prove that every HDR mode is unavailable.
Xbox Wire describes a successful report as “a series of green checkmarks across the board.” Check this page after changing a TV input setting, replacing a cable or bypassing a receiver so you can see whether the reported capability changes.
How do I calibrate HDR after turning it on?
Enabling HDR only establishes the signal. Calibration sets the way games map bright highlights and dark detail to your particular display.
- Open the Xbox Settings app.
- Go to General, then TV & display options.
- Choose Setup.
- Select Calibrate HDR for Games and follow the on-screen pattern instructions to adjust HDR tone mapping.
- Use Calibrate TV separately for general picture geometry and level adjustments.
Run the HDR calibration after the final HDMI path is in place. Changing the TV input mode, receiver, cable or display afterward can change the signal conditions that the calibration was intended to match.
Why does Xbox say HDR is not supported?
When 4K TV details lacks HDR checkmarks, work through the signal path in order rather than repeatedly toggling the console option.
1. Recheck the TV port setting
Confirm that the Xbox is plugged into the same HDMI input whose HDR, enhanced or deep-color mode you enabled. On many televisions, the setting is per-port, so enabling it for HDMI 1 does not enable it for HDMI 2.

2. Restore Auto-detect
In TV & display options, check video fidelity and overscan and select Auto-detect. A manually forced display mode can prevent Xbox from reading the capabilities that the television reports.
3. Simplify the HDMI chain
Temporarily remove the receiver or soundbar and connect the Xbox directly to the TV. If HDR appears in 4K TV details after the bypass, the intermediary equipment or its firmware is the limiting component.
4. Test the cable
Use the supplied Series X Ultra High Speed cable, or a certified replacement appropriate for Series S. A cable can carry a basic picture while failing to pass the bandwidth or HDR metadata required by the complete setup.
5. Update equipment firmware
Install available firmware updates for the TV and any receiver or soundbar, then restart the equipment and check 4K TV details again. Firmware can affect HDMI compatibility and passthrough behavior.

What should I do if HDR games have strange colors?
Abnormal colors can come from a mismatch between the game, the TV’s HDR mode and the HDMI path. Use Xbox’s options to isolate the cause:
- Open Settings > General > TV & display options > Advanced > Video modes.
- Temporarily clear Allow HDR10 and test the same game.
- If the problem remains or you are testing an automatically enhanced title, temporarily clear Auto HDR as well.
- After identifying the option associated with the problem, restore the setting and check the TV’s HDR input mode, picture preset and firmware.
This test distinguishes a general HDMI problem from an HDR-specific behavior. Native HDR support varies by game, while Auto HDR can enhance supported games that originally shipped in standard dynamic range.
How do I fix a corrupted image, flicker or a blank screen?
Corrupted image or unstable signal
Open TV & display options > Advanced > Video modes and temporarily turn off Allow Variable Refresh Rate. If the display stabilizes, test again with the refresh rate set to 60 Hz. Re-enable VRR afterward only if the image remains reliable.

Blank screen when using 4K
Temporarily clear Allow 4K and retest at a lower resolution. If the picture returns, the display, cable or intermediary device is not completing the 4K handshake at the selected settings. Reconnect the Xbox directly to the TV, verify the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode and test the certified cable before trying 4K again.
Problems that occur only through a receiver
Compare a direct-to-TV connection with the receiver connection. A receiver can support HDR in one input or mode but not pass the same signal through another; consult its current input and passthrough settings after the direct test.
Does Auto HDR mean every game will display in HDR?
No. Auto HDR can enhance supported games that were released in standard dynamic range, but coverage is not universal. A game with native HDR support can use its own HDR implementation, while an unsupported title may remain in standard dynamic range even when Auto HDR is enabled.
What hardware should I compare if my setup fails?
If the existing display path cannot pass HDR, compare replacement components against the capabilities that Xbox must detect, not merely against a television’s advertised resolution.
| Component | Compatibility points to check |
|---|---|
| TV or monitor | HDR10 support and the number and location of HDR-capable HDMI inputs |
| HDMI cable | Bandwidth appropriate to the console and certification; Ultra High Speed is the recommended Series X cable type |
| AV receiver or soundbar | HDR and required-resolution passthrough on the specific input and output path |
| Firmware | Current TV and receiver firmware that supports the desired HDMI features |
| Gaming features | Whether the display also reports optional Dolby Vision or VRR support |
Dolby Vision controls appear only when the display reports that format. VRR is likewise dependent on the display and the complete HDMI path, so treat it as a separate compatibility check rather than assuming HDR10 support guarantees it.
What are the most common setup mistakes?
- Enabling HDR on the wrong HDMI input while the Xbox is connected to another port.
- Leaving a receiver or soundbar in the chain even though it cannot pass the required signal.
- Using an unverified cable when the supplied or certified cable is available.
- Forcing a display mode instead of leaving video fidelity and overscan on Auto-detect.
- Assuming a 4K checkmark is required for every HDR configuration, or assuming 4K resolution alone guarantees HDR10.
- Calibrating HDR before changing the HDMI path and then expecting the old calibration to remain appropriate.
Does HDR work on a non-4K display?
Xbox does not require a 4K panel for every HDR arrangement, but the console exposes only the resolution and HDR capabilities reported by the connected display path. Check 4K TV details rather than inferring support from the panel’s resolution label.
Can I use a receiver and still get HDR?
Yes, provided the receiver or soundbar passes the required HDR signal and resolution. If the capability disappears, connect the Xbox directly to the TV, then use ARC or eARC for audio if the equipment supports it.

Why do Dolby Vision options not appear on my Xbox?
Dolby Vision controls appear only when the display reports Dolby Vision support over the HDMI connection. Check the television’s supported formats and make sure the Xbox is connected through the port and equipment path that reports them.
Should I replace my TV if one HDMI port fails the test?
Not necessarily. Because HDMI capability can vary by port, first test every port identified by the television as HDR-capable and enable its enhanced mode. Replace the display only when the available ports still fail the 4K TV details check after the cable and intermediary equipment have been ruled out.

Will HDR improve the picture in every Xbox game?
No. Native HDR support differs by game, and Auto HDR applies only to supported titles that originally used standard dynamic range. A game can therefore remain in standard dynamic range even while HDR10 is enabled globally.
Can I route video through a soundbar and audio through the TV at the same time?
Use a direct Xbox-to-TV connection for video when diagnosing HDR, then send audio over ARC or eARC if the television and soundbar support it. This separates video compatibility from audio routing.
Why does one HDMI socket support HDR while another does not?
Televisions often assign different bandwidth and format support to different HDMI inputs. Enable the manufacturer’s HDR or enhanced mode on the specific port in use and verify the result in Xbox’s 4K TV details screen.
Does enabling HDR10 automatically enable Dolby Vision?
No. Dolby Vision controls appear only when the connected display reports Dolby Vision support. HDR10 detection and Dolby Vision detection are separate capabilities communicated by the HDMI path.
