If the player is a child, a parent or family organizer must usually allow multiplayer on the child’s account.
Open Xbox Privacy & online safety, select the child’s account, set You can join multiplayer games to Allow, then submit the change and restart the game. Enable cross-network play, friend access, or communication separately when those features are needed.

Before changing the setting
Identify these details first:
- Account type: Is it an adult account, a child account, or an adult account incorrectly classified as underage?
- Game and edition: Minecraft Bedrock and Java use Microsoft/Xbox services differently, and other games may have their own controls.
- Platform: Xbox, Windows PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch can have different subscription and network requirements.
- Multiplayer type: Decide whether the player needs same-platform play, cross-platform play, friend requests, or voice and text chat.
There is no universal worldwide child-account age threshold. Consent and age rules vary by region; Microsoft’s parental-consent guidance explains the relevant account process.
Enable multiplayer in a browser
Use this method for a child account or any account managed by Microsoft Family Safety:

- Close the game completely.
- Open account.xbox.com/settings.
- Sign in with the parent, guardian, or family-organizer account—not the child’s account.
- Select the child’s account.
- Open Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety. Depending on the current interface, this may be labelled Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices Online Safety.
- Set You can join multiplayer games or Join multiplayer on Xbox to Allow.
- If the child must play with people on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or another gaming network, set You can join cross-network play or Join cross-network play to Allow.
- If the child cannot find or add friends, set You can add friends and follow others or Add friends and follow others to Allow.
- Open the privacy or communication section if invitations, voice chat, or text chat are also blocked. Choose an appropriate option, such as Friends, rather than automatically allowing all communication.
- Select Submit and wait for the page to reload.
- Sign out of the game, sign back in, and restart it.

What each permission controls

These controls are separate. Allowing multiplayer does not automatically enable voice chat, cross-platform play, or friend requests. Enable only the permissions required for the intended activity.
Use the Xbox Family Settings app
You do not need to own an Xbox console to manage these parental controls. The Xbox Family Settings app provides another management method:
- Close the game on the child’s device.
- Open the Xbox Family Settings app.
- Sign in with the parent or family-organizer account.
- Select the child’s profile.
- Open the Settings gear.
- Choose the relevant multiplayer, cross-network, friend, and communication categories.
- Allow only the features the child needs.
- Restart the game and sign in again.
If the child does not appear in the settings
The child must generally be connected to the correct Microsoft family group. Sign in to family.microsoft.com with the adult organizer account, choose Add a family member, and add the child’s existing Microsoft account or create a child account. The invited account may need to accept the invitation.

Only family organizers can add members. An account already belonging to another family group may need to leave or be removed from that group first. See Microsoft’s instructions for adding people to a family group.
If the controls remain unavailable, possible explanations include:
- You are signed in with the child account instead of the organizer account.
- Another adult Microsoft account originally granted parental consent.
- The account is already associated with another family group.
- Consent or age verification has not been completed.
- The account’s birth date is incorrect and Microsoft is treating an adult as a child.
Consent management may be limited to the adult account that originally granted consent. If the child sees a message saying that a parent blocked games or apps not published by Microsoft, review Microsoft’s guidance on third-party app access.
Minecraft-specific requirements
Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Bedrock multiplayer uses Microsoft/Xbox account permissions for multiplayer, Realms, cross-network play, and social features. The host’s world must also have multiplayer enabled. A Microsoft account setting cannot override a world, server, platform, or network restriction.

For cross-platform friends, allow both Join multiplayer games and Join cross-network play. If invitations or friend discovery fail, check the friend and communication permissions as well.
Minecraft Java Edition
Java Edition also uses Microsoft account and Xbox social settings for features such as friend requests and communication, but its server and multiplayer experience differs from Bedrock. Java-specific server settings and account access can still block multiplayer after the Microsoft permissions are changed.
Realms and Realms Stories
Realms is an optional hosted service, not a prerequisite for ordinary multiplayer. Buying Realms does not bypass a blocked privacy permission, family restriction, cross-network setting, or console subscription requirement. Some Realms Stories features may require additional multiplayer, cross-network, clubs, or community-creation permissions.

Check these causes in order:
- Restart the session: Submit the settings, sign out of the game, sign back in, and restart it. Microsoft’s guidance does not promise a fixed propagation time.
- Check cross-network play: This is required when players use different gaming networks.
- Check friend access: The player may be unable to locate or add someone even though multiplayer is enabled.
- Check communication: A player can join a game while voice chat, text chat, or invitations remain blocked. Review Microsoft’s communication and social settings guidance.
- Check the game’s own settings: In Minecraft Bedrock, the host must enable multiplayer for the world.
- Check the platform subscription: Console multiplayer may require Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox, Nintendo Switch Online on Nintendo Switch, or PlayStation Plus on PlayStation, depending on the platform and game. A subscription is not normally the solution to a Microsoft privacy restriction, and PC multiplayer does not automatically require Game Pass Core. See Minecraft’s multiplayer connectivity guidance.
- Check the correct adult account: If settings appear to revert or remain locked, the child’s consent may be tied to a different adult account.
- Check the family group: Confirm that the child is listed under the organizer’s Microsoft Family Safety account.
- Check the birth date and consent status: An incorrectly classified adult account may need Microsoft’s account or consent process rather than a multiplayer toggle.
- Check the network: Investigate Xbox service status, NAT type, router restrictions, custom DNS, port configuration, and the game server’s status. These issues are separate from account permissions.
Recommended privacy settings for children
For a child who needs to play online, allowing multiplayer alone is the narrowest useful starting point. Add cross-network play only when the child’s friends use other platforms. Use friends-only communication where possible, and enable friend requests only if the child needs to find or add players.

Unrestricted communication may make troubleshooting simpler, but it gives the child broader social access. Account permissions also cannot guarantee safety on third-party servers or user-created worlds, so review the game’s own reporting, blocking, and privacy tools as well.
Adult Microsoft accounts
An adult account normally does not require a parent to enable multiplayer. If an adult cannot join a game, check the game’s own privacy settings, platform subscription, account entitlements, network connection, server status, and whether the account has an incorrect birth date or family restriction.
The exact controls vary by game. Treat Xbox Privacy & online safety as the main account-level checkpoint for Xbox-connected games, not as a universal override for every multiplayer system.
