Use CastleDamageMode in the persistent ServerGameSettings.json file. Set it to Never to prevent players from damaging other players’ castles, Always to allow damage at any time, or TimeRestricted to allow damage only during the server’s configured VSCastle windows. The rule works only when GameModeType is PvP; a PvE server does not allow direct player or castle damage regardless of the castle-damage value.
What to change
Castle raiding in V Rising is controlled by two related settings, not one universal “raid” switch:

For a PvP server, the practical choices are:

Changing CastleDamageMode does not automatically choose what happens to the castle heart. Select CastleHeartDamageMode deliberately if you want to control destruction, seizure, or decay-related outcomes.

Before editing the server
- Stop the server first. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten when the server saves its current state.
- Back up the settings file. Keep a copy of the working JSON before making changes so you can restore it if a syntax mistake prevents the server from loading.
- Confirm that you are changing the persistent file. On a Windows dedicated server, durable overrides belong in the user-profile settings directory, not the default files inside the installation folder.
- Check the game mode. Castle-damage rules are active only for PvP. Setting
CastleDamageModetoAlwayson a PvE server will not turn castle damage on. - Record the current heart rule. If you are changing raid access but want the existing heart behavior to remain, leave
CastleHeartDamageModeunchanged.
Windows dedicated server: step-by-step
- Stop the server. Use the server host’s stop control or close the dedicated-server process cleanly.
- Open the persistent settings directory. In File Explorer, paste this path into the address bar:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettings. - Open
ServerGameSettings.json. This is the file intended for persistent gameplay overrides. Do not rely on a similarly named defaults file in the installation directory; changes there may not be the durable server configuration. - Check the game mode. Find
GameModeType. UsePvPwhen you wantCastleDamageModeto govern castle attacks. If it isPvE, players cannot directly damage other players or their castles. - Set the castle-damage value. Find
CastleDamageModeand replace its value with exactly one ofNever,Always, orTimeRestricted. Preserve the quotation marks and comma placement used by the JSON file. - Review the castle-heart value. If present, inspect
CastleHeartDamageMode. Its documented choices distinguish destruction while a heart is decaying, destruction by players, and seizure or destruction by players. Choose the documented option that matches your intended end state; do not assume that disabling castle-wall damage also disables heart actions. - Save valid JSON. Keep the file’s braces, quotation marks, commas, and capitalization intact. A missing comma or an extra comma can prevent the settings from loading.
- Start or restart the server. The new values are read when the server starts. Join after the restart and verify the rule with a test account or trusted player before announcing a raid window.
Minimal PvP examples
The following examples show the relevant keys together. Keep the rest of your existing file; do not replace the entire file with a short fragment.

How each castle-damage mode behaves
Never: protect castles while keeping PvP
Use Never when players should be able to fight under PvP rules but should not break into or damage one another’s castles. This is the correct setting for “stop castle raiding without turning off all PvP.” It does not change the server to PvE, and it does not by itself describe what can happen to a castle heart through decay or other heart-specific rules.

Always: open siege access
Always allows player castle damage at any time on a PvP server. There is no schedule gate in this mode. If your community expects protected hours, do not use this value; choose TimeRestricted and configure the relevant VSCastle windows instead.
TimeRestricted: scheduled raid windows
TimeRestricted allows castle damage only during the scheduled windows named VSCastle in PlayerInteractionSettings. The castle-damage setting and the schedule work together: the former enables scheduled behavior, while the latter defines when that behavior is active. If the schedule is missing, incorrectly edited, or not what your players expect, the result will not match your community’s advertised raid hours.
When using scheduled damage, publish the exact window from your server configuration to players and test both sides of the boundary: one attempt outside the window and one during it. The setting is time-dependent, so a successful test at one moment does not prove that damage is available all day.

Castle damage versus castle-heart damage
A castle’s ordinary structures and its heart have separate controls. CastleDamageMode answers whether players may damage castles. CastleHeartDamageMode answers which heart outcomes are permitted.

These are independent decisions. For example, a server can use a PvP mode with CastleDamageMode set to Never while retaining its existing heart-decay behavior. Conversely, enabling castle damage does not tell the game whether attackers may seize or destroy a heart. Read the heart option’s description in your server version or control panel and select it separately.
Using a hosting control panel
Managed server panels commonly expose the same fields without requiring direct file editing. The labels may be grouped under gameplay, PvP, castle, or advanced settings, but the values correspond to the server keys:

- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the game-settings editor or configuration file manager.
- Change the panel’s preset to a default, advanced, or custom settings mode if the individual fields are locked. Some panels hide manual values while a simplified preset is active.
- Set the game mode to PvP if castle-damage rules are required.
- Choose
Never,Always, orTimeRestrictedfor castle damage. - Review the separate castle-heart control and the
VSCastleschedule if applicable. - Save the configuration, then start or restart the server.
A panel is only another interface for the same settings. If its summary says “saved” but the server was not restarted, the running instance may still be using the old values. Stop-and-start instructions from hosting providers specifically require a restart around this change.

Troubleshooting when the change does not work
The server still behaves as before
- Confirm that the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- Check that you edited the persistent user-profile file, not an installation-folder defaults file.
- Verify the key spelling and capitalization:
GameModeType,CastleDamageMode, andCastleHeartDamageMode. - Make sure the panel did not regenerate the file from a preset when the server restarted.
Always does not enable castle damage
Check GameModeType. The setting is documented as active only when the game mode is PvP. A PvE server blocks direct damage to players and castles, so changing only the castle-damage value cannot override that mode.

Damage works at the wrong time
If the value is TimeRestricted, inspect the VSCastle entries in PlayerInteractionSettings. The schedule, not the word “restricted” alone, determines the active windows. Test outside and inside a configured window after a restart.
Walls are protected but the heart behaves unexpectedly
Inspect CastleHeartDamageMode. Castle-wall damage and heart destruction or seizure are separate controls. Set the heart rule to the documented category your server needs instead of assuming that CastleDamageMode covers it.
The server fails to load the edited file
Restore the backup, then compare the edited lines for malformed JSON: unmatched braces, missing quotation marks, or an incorrectly placed comma. Make one change at a time, save, and restart so you can identify which edit caused the failure.

What the setting means in one sentence
CastleDamageMode is the PvP castle-damage switch: Never blocks player damage, Always permits it at any time, and TimeRestricted permits it only during the configured VSCastle windows.
