What Windrose’s private-server setting does
Windrose privacy is controlled by a server-side configuration option. The setting does not create an invite code, change your home router, or require a console command. Instead, the dedicated server checks whether a connecting player supplies the configured password.

When protection is enabled and the server has been restarted, anyone who wants to join needs the current password. That provides a simple access boundary for a private group, testing session, or community that is not ready for unrestricted public connections. It does not prevent someone who knows the password from sharing it, so privacy still depends on who receives the value.
What you need before changing the setting
Have access to the hosting control panel account that manages the Windrose server. You also need permission to edit configuration files and restart the server. On a managed host, those controls are normally exposed in the panel; on a self-hosted installation, use the official Windrose dedicated-server documentation supplied with the free Steam Windrose Dedicated Server app to locate the equivalent configuration file.
- Know which server instance you are changing if your account hosts more than one.
- Choose a password you can distribute accurately to the intended players.
- Plan the restart for a time when nobody needs the server, because the change does not apply until the process is restarted.
- Keep the exact spelling and capitalization of the password available for testing after the restart.
The procedure below follows the control-panel labels documented for managed Windrose hosting. A self-hosted installation may present the same setting in a file editor rather than a web panel, but the two important values remain Is Password Protected and Password.
How to password-protect a Windrose server
- Open the server Control Panel. Sign in to the panel that manages the Windrose instance you want to restrict.
- Open the Config tab. Configuration files are separate from the live console and general account settings, so make sure you are editing the server’s configuration area.
- Select Windrose Server Settings. Choose the file with that exact name. Do not put the password in an unrelated general settings file.
- Enable Is Password Protected. Turn the option on. This is the switch that changes the server from an open connection flow to a password-required flow.
- Enter the password. In the same configuration area, locate
Passwordand enter the value you want players to use. Give the value only to the people who should be able to join. - Save the configuration. Use the panel’s save control and wait for confirmation that the file was written. If the panel indicates that changes are pending, do not close the page until the save completes.
- Restart the server. Restart the Windrose instance after saving. The restart loads the new configuration; merely changing the field while the server is running is not enough.

How to confirm that the server is private
After the restart finishes, test the connection using the normal Windrose server entry flow. A player who does not provide the configured password should not be able to complete the protected connection. A player who enters the exact saved password should be allowed to proceed.
- Wait until the panel reports that the server has finished restarting.
- Open the server list or connection screen used by your players.
- Attempt to join without entering the password, if the interface allows that test.
- Retry with the exact password saved in the configuration.
- Ask one intended player to test from their own account so you verify the real player path rather than only an administrator view.
If the password prompt or rejection behavior does not appear, return to the configuration file and verify both controls. A saved value in Password has no effect while Is Password Protected is disabled, and an enabled toggle has no usable credential if the password was not saved.
Troubleshooting a server that still appears open
The toggle is enabled, but players can join without a password
- Open the correct server instance in the Control Panel. It is easy to edit one instance while testing another.
- Reopen Config and select Windrose Server Settings, then confirm that
Is Password Protectedis still enabled. - Check that the configuration save completed. If the panel reverted the field, enter it again and save.
- Restart the server after the save. The setting is server-side and requires a restart to apply.
- Have the tester close and reopen the connection screen after the restart so they are not relying on a stale session.
The cited hosting instructions do not describe a separate invite-code or firewall change as part of making a Windrose server private. Do not add router rules or unrelated access controls merely because the password has not taken effect; first verify the file, save, and restart sequence.

The password field is present, but the password is rejected
- Have the player enter the password exactly as saved, including capitalization and any spaces that you intentionally included.
- Confirm that the latest password was saved before the most recent restart.
- Ask the player to retry after the restart has fully completed.
- If you changed the password, distribute the new value rather than assuming an old message or saved credential has updated automatically.
When troubleshooting, avoid changing several settings at once. Keeping the toggle and password as the only edits makes it clear whether the protection workflow is working.

Friends cannot connect after privacy was enabled
First determine whether the failure is authentication or availability. If the server presents a password requirement but rejects the attempt, check the exact password and the restart. If the server is not visible or does not respond at all, verify that the restart completed and that you are using the normal server entry method. The password procedure itself does not document an additional invite code or firewall step.
If only one friend fails while another can join with the same value, compare the entered characters carefully and have the affected player retry after reopening the connection screen. If nobody can join with the new value, revisit the configuration save and restart rather than repeatedly changing the password.
The server appears private to some players but not others
Check that everyone is connecting to the same server instance and that no one is using an old saved entry. A password belongs to the configuration loaded by a particular server process. Editing one instance cannot protect a different instance with a similar name.
Changing or rotating the password
To rotate access, return to Config and Windrose Server Settings, leave Is Password Protected enabled, replace the value in Password, save, and restart. Tell players the effective time for the new value and remove the old password from shared messages where practical.

A rotation is useful when a former player should no longer have access, when the password has been posted publicly, or when a temporary event has ended. Because the server reads the value on restart, schedule the change as a short maintenance window and make sure the panel confirms the save before restarting.
Managed hosting compared with self-hosting
Managed providers such as Shockbyte and Nitrado expose Windrose server controls in a web panel. Self-hosting gives you direct responsibility for the dedicated-server installation and its configuration. The available evidence establishes the configuration workflow and the existence of these hosting options, but it does not establish current prices, plan limits, or maintenance commitments.

Choose the arrangement based on who should handle restarts, file access, and server maintenance. The privacy setting itself is the same idea in either arrangement: enable the protection flag, set the password, save the configuration, and restart the process that loads it.
Password practices for a private group
Use a value that is difficult for outsiders to guess but easy for your invited players to transcribe correctly. Share it through a channel limited to the intended group rather than posting it alongside the server address in a public forum.

- Tell players whether capitalization matters and whether any spaces are intentional.
- Change the value when the group changes or when the password is disclosed outside the group.
- After rotating it, test with one trusted player before announcing that the server is available.
- Do not confuse server privacy with moderation. A password controls entry; it does not replace rules, player management, or backups.
What this setting does not change
Password protection controls who can pass the server’s entry requirement. It does not, according to the cited procedure, require a router modification, a separate invite-code system, or an in-game administrator command. It also does not guarantee that a password will remain confidential after it has been shared.
For a self-hosted server, the official Windrose dedicated-server documentation remains the appropriate reference for installation-specific details. The managed-panel labels described here may not appear in exactly the same place on a manually operated installation, but the underlying privacy controls are still the server configuration and the password required for entry.
