On a personal Windows 10 PC, disable Game DVR from Settings > Gaming: switch off the Game Bar recording option, then open Captures (called Game DVR on older builds) and turn off background recording. Re-enable those controls to restore recording. On a managed Pro, Enterprise, Education, or IoT Enterprise computer, an administrator can control the feature for the whole device with Group Policy or MDM. Registry editing is a last-resort fallback because a wrong value can destabilize Windows. Disabling background capture can resolve recording conflicts and may improve performance, but Microsoft and OBS provide no universal FPS figure; the effect depends on your hardware and workload.

Game DVR is Windows 10’s built-in game recording and broadcasting system, exposed through Xbox Game Bar. It can capture clips, screenshots, microphone or camera input, and broadcasts. Microsoft defines Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting as allowed by default (policy value 1) and blocked when the policy value is 0. The device policy applies to Windows 10 desktop from version 1507 onward and is documented for Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions.

The consumer controls and their names changed between Windows 10 releases. Current installations generally use Game Bar and Captures; older releases may show Game DVR. OBS documents the version-dependent paths at its Windows gaming-features troubleshooting guide, while an older Windows 10 version 1703 reference shows the original labels in detail.

How do I disable Game DVR in Windows 10 Settings?

Use Settings first on a personal PC. This changes the current user’s recording controls without editing the registry.

  1. Press Win+I to open Settings.
  2. Select Gaming.
  3. Open Game Bar. Turn off the option that records game clips and screenshots and handles broadcasting. On older builds, this appears as Record game clips and screenshots using Game DVR.
  4. Open Captures. On older builds, select Game DVR instead. Turn off Record in the background while I'm playing a game.
  5. If you do not want the controller shortcut to open Game Bar, also turn off the controller-related Game Bar option on that page.

The older Windows 10 1703 path is documented as Gaming > Game bar for the recording switch and Gaming > Game DVR for background recording in MSI’s Windows 10 FAQ. If your labels differ, look for the same functions under Game Bar, Captures, or Game DVR rather than assuming the feature is absent.

How can I confirm that recording is off?

Return to both pages and verify that the recording and background-recording switches remain off. Turning off only background recording leaves on-demand clip or screenshot controls available, so disable the Game Bar recording switch as well when you want recording blocked through the user interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I re-enable Game DVR?

Go back to Settings > Gaming > Game Bar and turn on the recording option. Then open Captures (or Game DVR on older builds) and turn on background recording if you want Windows to retain the rolling background buffer. Re-enable the controller shortcut separately if you want a gamepad button to open Game Bar.

A device policy can override these user-facing switches. If a managed computer keeps the controls disabled, an administrator must change the device policy before the Settings changes can take effect.

Which method should I use: Settings, Group Policy, or the registry?

Choose based on scope and risk. Settings is the reversible choice for one user, policy is the controlled choice for an organization, and registry editing is a high-risk fallback when the other routes are unavailable.

Route Scope Edition and rights Reversibility and risk
Settings Primarily the current user’s Game Bar and capture behavior Designed for normal Windows 10 use; administrator rights are usually not required Easy to reverse; labels vary by Windows 10 build
Group Policy or MDM Whole device, including users subject to the device policy Policy documentation covers Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise; administrator or device-management access is required Centralized and auditable; can override a user’s Settings choice
Registry Per-user values under HKCU, or device policy under HKLM HKCU changes affect one profile; HKLM policy changes require administrative control Reversible only if original values are recorded; incorrect edits can cause application errors, instability, or prevent Windows from starting

For a managed deployment, Microsoft’s AllowGameDVR policy documentation is the authoritative reference for scope, supported editions, and the policy value.

How do I block Game DVR for every user with Group Policy?

On a supported Pro, Enterprise, Education, or IoT Enterprise edition, use the local or domain Group Policy editor. This is a device-level control rather than a per-user preference.

  1. Open the Group Policy editor with administrator rights.
  2. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting.
  3. Open Enables or disables Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting.
  4. Set the policy to Disabled to block recording and broadcasting. Leave it Enabled or Not configured to allow the feature.

The backing policy is HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\GameDVR, with the DWORD value AllowGameDVR: 0 means recording and broadcasting are not allowed, and 1 means they are allowed. Microsoft identifies this as a Windows 10 desktop device policy, so it is suitable for centrally managed computers rather than a single-user preference.

How does MDM control Game DVR?

Mobile device management can apply the same AllowGameDVR setting at device scope. Set the policy to 0 when an organization must prevent Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting, or to 1 when it should be permitted. Because MDM is enforced outside the user profile, local Settings changes cannot override an administrative prohibition.

Can I disable Game DVR through the Windows registry?

Yes, but use this route only when Settings or an approved policy workflow is unavailable. Microsoft’s registry guidance lists per-user GameDVR controls under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameDVR, including separate settings for Game Bar, recording, screenshots, microphone capture, camera capture, and broadcasting. Related Game Bar values are under HKCU
rSoftware\Microsoft\GameBar
.

Before changing anything, export the relevant keys or create another documented backup and record every original value. Change only the value you understand, close Registry Editor, and verify behavior. Microsoft warns that an incorrect registry edit can produce instability, application errors, or even stop Windows from starting; its general system-configuration guidance is available at Microsoft Support. A separate Microsoft registry reference describes the GameDVR settings model at Microsoft Learn.

Do not confuse a per-user HKCU change with the device policy in HKLM
rSoftware\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\GameDVR
. The latter is the administrative control represented by AllowGameDVR and can affect every user covered by the policy.

Will disabling Game DVR improve FPS or fix recording problems?

It can help, but there is no reliable percentage that applies to every PC. Xbox Wire explains that Windows uses hardware encoding for performance, yet background recording will likely affect game performance except on the highest-end GPUs. OBS also warns that Game DVR can conflict with another recorder’s hardware encoder and recommends turning off background recording when troubleshooting capture problems.

Why can two recorders conflict?

Game DVR and applications such as OBS may both try to use the GPU’s hardware video-encoding path. Depending on the graphics driver, encoder capacity, game resolution, and capture settings, that competition can cause dropped frames, failed starts, stuttering, or an encoder that cannot be opened. Disabling background recording removes one automatic capture workload; it does not guarantee that every recording issue will disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I test the performance impact?

  1. Measure a repeatable game scene with your normal graphics and recording settings.
  2. Turn off background recording first, leaving other settings unchanged.
  3. Repeat the same scene and compare frame-time consistency, capture stability, and GPU or encoder utilization.
  4. If the problem remains, test the Game Bar recording switch and your other recorder separately rather than changing several variables at once.

Microsoft’s Xbox guidance recommends checking graphics and other device drivers before removing the feature or editing the registry. Treat any improvement as system-specific rather than promising a fixed FPS gain.

What should I check if Game DVR will not stay disabled?

Work through the symptom that matches your PC:

  • The option is missing or has a different name: Check both Game Bar and Captures; older Windows 10 releases use Game DVR. The function may be present under a version-specific label.
  • The switch turns back on or has no effect: Check whether Group Policy or MDM applies AllowGameDVR=0. A device policy takes precedence over a user preference.
  • OBS or another recorder fails after Game Bar is enabled: Turn off background recording and test again, because both applications may compete for hardware encoding.
  • Capture behavior is unstable after a system change: Check graphics and related device drivers before attempting registry edits, as Microsoft recommends.
  • You edited the registry and Windows behaves unexpectedly: Restore the backed-up values or use System Configuration and recovery procedures rather than making additional untracked changes.

Why do organizations disable Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting?

Recording can include whatever appears on the screen, including session information or sensitive work data. The CIS Windows 10 Enterprise benchmark recommends disabling Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting in its enterprise profile because of this privacy exposure. Organizations that adopt the recommendation should enforce it with device policy so users cannot simply re-enable recording in Settings.

What is the safest decision for your Windows 10 PC?

  • Personal gaming PC: Start with Settings. Disable background recording if you only need to stop the automatic buffer; disable the Game Bar recording control as well when you want the user-facing capture feature off.
  • PC managed by work or school: Ask the administrator to review the Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting policy. Do not fight an enforced policy with registry edits.
  • Capture troubleshooting: Turn off background recording before changing drivers or replacing recording software, then test one change at a time.
  • Privacy-sensitive environment: Use the device policy rather than relying on each user’s Settings page.
  • Registry-only situation: Back up first, document original values, and make the smallest possible change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does disabling Game DVR uninstall Xbox Game Bar?

No. The recording and broadcasting controls govern capture behavior; they are not an uninstall procedure. If the overlay still opens from a controller shortcut, turn off the separate controller/Game Bar option in Settings.

Why can I still take screenshots after turning off background recording?

Background recording is a rolling buffer, while on-demand Game Bar capture is a separate control. Disable the Game Bar recording option as well if you want screenshots and clips blocked through the interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Windows 10 Home use the administrative Game DVR policy?

The Microsoft policy documentation lists Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. On an edition outside that list, use the Settings controls unless your organization supplies an approved management method.

Should I disable Game DVR before updating graphics drivers?

For a capture problem, disabling background recording is a sensible isolation step, but Microsoft recommends checking drivers before removing the feature or editing the registry. Change one variable at a time so you can identify the cause.
