To enable Simple Voice Chat, install the compatible mod or plugin on the Minecraft Java client and server where required, make the voice-chat UDP port reachable, then press V to choose your microphone, speakers, and speaking mode. Pressing V opens the client interface; it does not install or configure voice chat on a multiplayer server.
Before you install it
Simple Voice Chat is for Minecraft Java Edition. First identify the Minecraft version and the server’s mod loader or plugin platform, then choose a matching build from the Simple Voice Chat project listing. The project lists builds for multiple Minecraft versions and platforms, but the available files change; check the current listing rather than assuming a particular release supports your setup.
For multiplayer, the server needs a compatible Simple Voice Chat mod or plugin as well as any client installation required by its platform. A vanilla server needs a compatible mod or plugin platform installed before it can run the server component. Client setup alone will not enable voice chat for everyone.
Set up voice chat as a player
- Install the matching client build. Use the version and loader required by your server, and follow that platform’s normal mod installation process.
- Join a world or server. Starting with Simple Voice Chat 2.5.2, the mod provides an onboarding guide on first use. Press V to open the guide or voice-chat interface.
- Choose your audio devices. Select the microphone and speakers you want to use. Use the microphone control or audio test in the settings to check that the selected device works.
- Choose how to speak. Set push-to-talk or voice activation. If you choose push-to-talk, configure its key; for voice activation, adjust the activation level.
- Check mute and voice-chat status. The interface includes mute and voice-chat disable controls. Confirm the microphone is not muted if other players cannot hear you.
For ordinary proximity chat, players need to be within the server’s configured voice distance. Group chat is separate and can let participants talk beyond that local range. Open it from the GUI or group key; the project also documents /voicechat invite <playername> for inviting someone.

Enable it on a multiplayer server
The server must run the compatible Simple Voice Chat mod or plugin, and clients need the compatible setup for that platform. Voice audio also uses a UDP port. The project’s default is 24454 UDP, but a host may assign a different port and the server configuration can be changed. Opening the normal Minecraft game port does not necessarily open the separate voice-chat port.
Hosted server
Check the hosting panel for UDP support and a port allocation. The exact panel controls differ by provider. For Modrinth-hosted servers, the provider’s May 27, 2026 guide instructs users to create an allocation, copy its assigned port, start and stop the server to generate the voice-chat configuration, and set port= to that allocation in voicechat-server.properties.

For the Modrinth guide’s listed platforms, the configuration file is under plugins/voicechat for Paper or Purpur, and under config/voicechat for Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, or Forge. These paths describe that guide’s setup; other hosts may expose files or panel settings differently. If the host does not offer a reachable UDP allocation, voice chat may not work there.
Self-hosted server
Allow the voice-chat UDP port through the server machine’s firewall. If the server is on a home network, configure the router to forward that UDP port to the server machine as well. The details depend on your firewall, router, and network setup.

If the server runs in Docker and uses the default port, publish UDP explicitly, for example 24454:24454/udp. A TCP mapping by itself is not the required UDP mapping.
Verify the server configuration
- Set the configured voice-chat port to the port that the host allocated or that you opened on your network. The setting is in the voice-chat server configuration, not Minecraft’s
server.properties. - Restart the server after changing the configuration.
- Check the server log for a message that the voice-chat server started on the intended port. For a hosted allocation, confirm the logged port matches the allocated one.
- With the voice-chat server running, use the project’s
/voicechat test <PLAYERNAME>command to test a player’s connection.
For proxy setups such as BungeeCord or Velocity, use the project’s server setup documentation for the relevant proxy instructions.

Hosted and self-hosted network steps compared

Fix common voice-chat problems
Disconnected status or plug icon
- Confirm the server has the compatible voice-chat mod or plugin and is running.
- Check that the configured port is the port the host allocated, and that it is reachable over UDP.
- For Docker, check the UDP mapping. For a home server, check both the machine firewall and router forwarding.
- VPNs, ISP restrictions, or host DDoS protection can interfere with UDP. Proxy servers require their corresponding project setup.
Other players cannot hear you
- Confirm the correct microphone is selected and unmuted; the onboarding flow can leave the microphone muted even when voice activation is selected.
- Use the microphone test in settings and check the push-to-talk key or voice-activation threshold.
You cannot hear other players
Check the selected speaker or output device and use the available audio test.
Players remain audible at long range
Check whether you are in a group chat. Group conversations can bypass the normal proximity distance.

A port check gives an unclear result
Generic online port checkers typically cannot establish whether a UDP voice-chat application is answering. Test while the voice-chat server is running using the project’s /voicechat test <PLAYERNAME> command instead. The project also notes that voice chat is encrypted but does not guarantee its security.
