On a supported Windows 11 Insider Experimental Channel build, enable the redesigned Run window at Settings > System > Advanced, switch Run Dialog on, and press Win+R. That is Microsoft’s documented activation method. The control may not appear on a retail installation, an ineligible preview build, or a PC whose administrator has hidden Advanced settings. If you are testing an eligible build and the switch is missing, ViveTool can expose the feature, but that unofficial workaround depends on preview-build feature IDs and can stop working after an update.
The new window keeps the purpose of the classic Run box: it launches commands, opens local and network paths, and remembers command history. It adds a Fluent Design interface, dark mode, a shortcut for browsing from your home directory, and arrow-key history navigation. You can return to the classic interface at any time by turning the same switch off.

What is the new Run dialog in Windows 11?
The modern Run dialog is a replacement for the classic Win+R interface. Microsoft describes it as a WinUI 3 and C# application compiled with .NET Native AOT. Its code is shared with the Command Palette (CmdPal) in PowerToys, so the visual treatment follows the newer Windows design language rather than the small, older system dialog.
It is an opt-in preview feature while Microsoft gathers feedback and iterates on the design. The underlying job has not changed: you can type an executable, a command, a folder path, a network location, or a shell target and submit it. Existing command history remains available, so scripts and shortcuts that depend on the Run box do not need to be rewritten merely because the interface changes.

Microsoft’s product announcement says the feature is intended to improve through user feedback. That status matters: availability, wording, and feature IDs can change between Insider releases, and a retail Windows 11 installation may not expose the option yet.
Which Windows 11 versions support the new Run dialog?
Microsoft Learn currently lists two requirements: Windows 11 must include the Advanced settings system component, and the PC must be running a Windows Insider Experimental Channel build. The documentation does not establish the feature as generally available on every retail edition.
- Eligible environment: Windows 11 Insider Experimental Channel with the Advanced settings component present.
- Potentially ineligible environment: a normal retail installation, another Insider channel, or a preview build that has not received the feature.
- Managed environment: organizational policy can hide or disable controls on the Advanced settings page, even when the operating-system build otherwise qualifies.
Build numbers cited by third-party coverage are useful only as historical context. Pureinfotech described the feature around Windows 11 build 26300.8289. ElevenForum later listed build 26300.8346 for Experimental 25H2 and build 26340.9212 for Experimental 26H2. Those references are volatile; check the current Insider release and its notes rather than treating any one number as a permanent minimum.
How do I enable the new Run dialog through Settings?
Use the supported Settings route first. It does not require a download, an elevated terminal, or a feature-ID guess.
- Confirm that the PC is on an eligible Windows 11 Insider Experimental Channel build and that the Advanced settings component is installed.
- Open Settings. You can select it from Start or use the Win+I shortcut.
- Select System in the left navigation.
- Open Advanced.
- At the top of the page, find Run Dialog and turn the switch On.
- Press Win+R. The redesigned Run interface should appear immediately.
No separate app launch is required after the switch is enabled. If Win+R still shows the old box, close and reopen Settings, sign out and back in, or restart Windows before trying the shortcut again. A restart is not part of Microsoft’s documented activation sequence, but it can refresh a preview component that did not reload when the setting changed.
Why is “Run Dialog” missing from Settings > System > Advanced?
A missing switch generally means that Windows does not currently meet the feature’s eligibility conditions, or that policy is suppressing the control. It does not mean the keyboard shortcut has been removed.

The Advanced settings component is absent
Microsoft lists Advanced settings as a required system component. If the Advanced page itself is missing or contains fewer controls, the installation may not include the component, or the current preview package may not have registered it correctly. Updating to the latest eligible Insider build is the appropriate supported remedy.
An administrator has applied a policy
On a work, school, or otherwise managed PC, organizational policy can disable or hide Advanced settings controls. Contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy. A local feature toggle cannot override a centrally enforced restriction.
The rollout has not reached this installation
Preview features can be staged independently of the base build. Two PCs reporting the same broad Windows version can therefore expose different controls. In that case, waiting for a later Insider update is safer than forcing an experimental feature ID.

Can ViveTool enable the dialog when the official switch is absent?
Testers sometimes use ViveTool to expose hidden preview features. Pureinfotech reported the following command for the modern Run dialog:
vivetool /enable /id:58381341,58527096,57156807,57259990
This is not Microsoft’s supported activation path. It requires downloading and extracting ViveTool, opening an elevated Command Prompt, changing to the folder containing the executable, running the command, and restarting Windows. After the restart, check Settings > System > Advanced for the Run Dialog switch.
- Download ViveTool from a source you trust and extract it to a known folder.
- Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Change to the extracted folder with
cd. For example, if you extracted it toC:ViveTool, runcd /d C:ViveTool. - Run the feature-enable command shown above.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > System > Advanced and look for the toggle. If it appears, turn it on and press Win+R.
Feature IDs are implementation details, not a stable public interface. An Insider update can change them, remove them, or make the command return an error. Even if the command reports success, that does not establish Microsoft support for the configuration. Use this route only on a noncritical preview installation when you understand that the result may be temporary and that troubleshooting may require undoing the change or restoring the system.
Which activation method should you use?
The Settings switch is the clear choice for normal testing because Microsoft documents it and provides a direct rollback. ViveTool is a fallback for informed preview testers, not a general solution for retail PCs.

What changes when the modern dialog is enabled?
The redesign changes the presentation and adds a few navigation conveniences while preserving the familiar workflow.
Fluent Design and dark mode
The window uses Fluent Design styling and follows a dark-mode presentation when Windows is configured for dark mode. This is a visual change rather than a replacement for the command processor: commands still execute through the normal Windows mechanisms.
Home-directory shortcut
Type ~ in the field to jump to the current user’s home directory, then continue browsing subdirectories. The tilde is useful when you know a path relative to your profile but do not want to type the complete drive-and-folder path.
Command-history navigation
Use the up and down arrow keys to move through previous Run entries. This supplements the existing history behavior and is useful for repeating a long command without retyping it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommands, paths, and network locations remain supported
The modern window still launches commands, opens local paths, and accepts network locations. The redesign does not turn Run into a full file manager or terminal; it remains a quick launcher with history.
Is the modern Run dialog faster than the classic one?
Microsoft’s Windows Command Line team reported a median time-to-show of 94 milliseconds for the modern dialog and 103 milliseconds for the classic dialog in 2026. These are Microsoft’s own measurements, not an independent benchmark, and the available report does not establish hardware, workload, or a guaranteed experience for every PC. Treat the figures as an indication of the team’s measurement, not a promise of a nine-millisecond improvement on your machine.
The same team reported that only 0.0038% of users clicked the Browse button in a sample of 35 million users. That observation helps explain why the redesign emphasizes typing and history, but it does not remove Browse or prove that every user should avoid it.

How do I return to the classic Win+R dialog?
Open Settings > System > Advanced, turn Run Dialog off, and press Win+R again. Microsoft documents this as the rollback path; the classic dialog returns without reinstalling Windows or changing your commands.
If you enabled the feature with ViveTool and the supported switch never appears, the safest response is to stop forcing it and move back to a normal supported build or undo the feature change using the tool’s documented disable procedure for your installed version. Because feature IDs and ViveTool syntax can change, do not assume that a disable command from another build is appropriate.
What should you check if Win+R still opens the old interface?
- Confirm the toggle: Reopen Settings > System > Advanced and verify that Run Dialog is still on.
- Confirm the channel: Check that the PC remains enrolled in the Experimental Channel and has not moved to a different release.
- Restart Windows: Preview components may not reload immediately after a setting change.
- Check policy: On a managed PC, an administrator may be reverting or suppressing the control.
- Recheck after updates: A later Insider update can alter the rollout, remove the feature temporarily, or invalidate ViveTool IDs.
Do not treat a successful ViveTool command as proof that the feature is installed correctly. The reliable test is whether the documented toggle appears and whether Win+R opens the modern interface after a restart.
What is the practical verdict for Windows 11 users?
Use the built-in toggle when it is available: Settings > System > Advanced > Run Dialog: On, then press Win+R. The feature is currently documented for Windows Insider Experimental Channel systems with Advanced settings, so a missing switch on retail Windows is expected rather than a sign that your keyboard is broken. ViveTool can be useful for knowledgeable preview testers, but its IDs are build-sensitive and its configuration is unsupported. Turning the same Settings switch off restores the classic experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does enabling the modern Run dialog change my existing commands or shortcuts?
No. The feature changes the interface, not the command syntax. Executables, shell commands, local paths, network locations, and stored Run history continue to be handled by the Windows Run mechanism.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will the new Run dialog appear on Windows 11 Home or Pro retail editions?
Not necessarily. The current Microsoft documentation limits the feature to Windows 11 Insider Experimental Channel builds that include Advanced settings, so edition alone does not guarantee access. Retail availability can arrive later and is not established by the preview documentation.
Can an administrator prevent me from enabling Run Dialog?
Yes. Microsoft notes that organizational policy can disable or hide controls on the Advanced settings page. On a managed computer, ask the administrator to review the policy instead of attempting to bypass it with a feature-enablement utility.
What happens to the feature after an Insider update?
The Settings-controlled feature may be renamed, moved, staged differently, or temporarily removed as Microsoft iterates. If you used ViveTool, its feature IDs may stop working or produce a different result, so verify the current build before repeating the command.
