Microsoft Edge has a user-facing typosquatting switch; Chrome does not. In Edge, open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security and enable Website typo protection (or open edge://settings/privacy/security). Microsoft says the feature is normally on by default. Chrome’s lookalike-domain checks run inside the browser, with no separate consumer setting or extension to install; keeping Chrome updated is the practical way to receive them.
These checks are an early warning, not a guarantee that a site is malicious. Edge’s typo checker looks for likely address mistakes, while Chrome compares a URL with popular sites and sites in your browsing history. Keep Edge SmartScreen enabled as a second, reputation-based layer, and verify any warning before entering credentials or payment details.

Typosquatting is the practice of registering a domain that resembles a legitimate organization’s address, often by changing one character or using a visually similar character. A browser checker watches the address you are trying to open and warns when it resembles a more familiar destination. Microsoft describes Edge’s feature as warning when you appear to have mistyped a common web address and may be sent to a malicious site.
The checks are performed during navigation, before you proceed with the page. A warning can interrupt loading with a full-page block or appear as a pop-up. Treat it as a prompt to stop and inspect the address, not as a certificate that the destination is safe or unsafe.

How do I turn on the typosquatting checker in Microsoft Edge?
Website Typo Protection is built into current desktop and mobile Edge releases that support the feature. The normal default is on, but the setting can be changed by you or forced by an administrator.
- Open Edge and select the Settings and more menu (the three dots), then choose Settings.
- In the left navigation, open Privacy, search, and services.
- Scroll to the Security section.
- Turn on Website typo protection.
You can jump directly to the same control by entering edge://settings/privacy/security in the address bar. If the switch is unavailable or keeps reverting, an organizational policy may be controlling it; see the administration section below.
How can I confirm Edge is using the setting?
Close the settings tab after enabling the switch and open a deliberately mistyped address only if you can do so without signing in or downloading anything. The expected result is a warning or a correction prompt before the destination is treated as an ordinary page. Do not use a real financial or work account as a test.
How do I keep Microsoft Defender SmartScreen on in Edge?
SmartScreen is separate from Website Typo Protection. Typo protection focuses on likely mistakes in an address; SmartScreen checks the reputation of visited sites for phishing and malware using dynamic reports and other signals. Running both gives you two different checks on the same navigation.
- In Edge, open Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Security, find Microsoft Defender SmartScreen.
- Leave the SmartScreen switch on. The direct settings page is
edge://settings/privacy.
A typo warning does not replace SmartScreen, and SmartScreen does not replace careful address checking. If either layer warns, stop before entering a password, payment number, recovery code, or other sensitive information.

Does Google Chrome have a lookalike-domain warning?
Yes. Chrome’s lookalike checks are browser-native navigation checks, so ordinary users do not need to enable a separate “typosquatting checker” or install an extension. Chromium documentation describes the checks as comparing the URL you requested with URLs that are very popular or that you have visited before.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Chrome can present a full-page warning or a pop-up containing a “Did you mean …?” suggestion. The exact appearance can change as Chrome’s security UI evolves. There is no documented consumer toggle equivalent to Edge’s Website typo protection; keep Chrome current and avoid enterprise policies that disable the warnings.
What kinds of lookalikes can Chrome recognize?
Chromium gives several examples of patterns the checks can identify:
- Small edit-distance changes: a character substitution such as
goog0le.cominstead of a familiar address. - Embedded hostnames: an address such as
google.com.example.com, where the familiar name appears inside a different domain. The registrable domain is the part at the right, so this is not the same as being ongoogle.com. - IDN homographs: a visually similar internationalized-domain character, such as
goögle.com, that can look convincing in a quick glance.
These examples describe detection patterns, not a complete list of every spoofing technique. A domain can be deceptive without matching one of them closely enough to trigger a warning.
What is the difference between Edge’s checker and Chrome’s warning system?
Both features are designed to catch navigation mistakes, but they use different controls and comparison inputs.

The table compares the documented behavior, not a promise that one browser catches every spoofed address. Browser versions, warning wording, and policy controls can change.
Can Chrome’s lookalike warning be wrong?
Yes. Chromium explicitly cautions that its lookalike checks are not always right. Some domains that resemble a popular or previously visited site are legitimate, and Chrome cannot detect every lookalike domain.
Chrome’s use of browsing history also means two people may not receive the same warning for the same address. A URL that resembles a site you visit frequently can be more likely to match your personal comparison set than it would in a fresh profile. A warning therefore means “this address resembles another one,” not “this site has been proven malicious.”
What should I do when Chrome warns me?
- Read the complete hostname, including the final domain portion before the first slash.
- Compare it with the address you intended to visit; do not rely only on the page logo or title.
- Use a bookmark or type a known-good address rather than accepting a suggestion you cannot verify.
- If you reached the page from an email, message, advertisement, or search result, return to the organization’s known starting point and navigate from there.
- Leave the page if the address is unfamiliar, asks for unusual credentials, or triggers additional security warnings.
Do not bypass a warning merely because the page looks professional. If the site is genuinely legitimate, independently opening the organization’s known address is safer than continuing through a suspicious variant.

Why did Edge warn me about a website typo?
Edge’s warning usually means the address you entered is close to a common web address and could lead to a domain registered to imitate it. A single substituted, omitted, or added character is enough to create that situation. The warning is based on the address pattern; it is not a statement that Microsoft has investigated every aspect of the destination.

Which Edge versions and platforms support Website Typo Protection?
Microsoft’s current policy documentation lists support on Windows 96 and later, macOS 96 and later, and Android 124 and later. Microsoft lists iOS as not supported for this feature. These are minimum versions from Microsoft Learn’s 2026 documentation, not a guarantee that every managed installation exposes the same control.
To check your Edge build, open Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge and install any offered update according to your organization’s rules. Mobile menus can be rearranged by release, so search the in-app settings for Website typo protection if the desktop path is not shown.
How do organizations manage Edge’s typosquatting checker?
Administrators can use the Boolean TyposquattingCheckerEnabled policy to force Website Typo Protection on or off through Microsoft Edge administrative policy paths. When the policy is not configured, Microsoft says the feature is on by default and users can choose whether to use it.
If an employee cannot change the switch, open Edge’s policy status page at edge://policy and look for a configured typosquatting policy. A managed value is an administrative decision, so users should contact their IT team rather than repeatedly changing the local setting. Administrators should review policy behavior against the Edge version and platform they actually deploy.

What should I check if the protection does not appear to work?
- The setting is missing: verify that Edge meets the documented platform minimum and that you are looking in Privacy, search, and services > Security, not in the general permissions pages.
- The switch is locked: inspect
edge://policy; a configuredTyposquattingCheckerEnabledvalue can override the user choice. - SmartScreen is off: return to
edge://settings/privacyand enable Microsoft Defender SmartScreen separately. - No Chrome warning appeared: absence of a warning does not prove that a domain is genuine. Chrome’s checks are limited and can miss lookalikes.
- A legitimate site was flagged: compare the full hostname and open the organization’s known address independently instead of assuming the warning is an error.
- The page still looks suspicious after a warning is dismissed: close it, do not download files or submit data, and report the address through your organization’s normal security channel.
Do you need a Chrome extension to detect misspelled domains?
No. The documented Chrome capability is part of Chrome itself, and the Chromium description does not call for an extension. Adding an unverified extension can create a separate privacy and security decision without improving the browser’s native lookalike checks.
For Edge, the same principle applies: enable the built-in Website Typo Protection and keep SmartScreen active before considering any additional browser software. Native controls are easier to manage consistently, particularly on shared or work-managed devices.

What is the safest workflow when a browser flags an address?
Use the warning as a pause point and verify the destination through a path you already trust. The following workflow works in either browser:
- Stop: do not type credentials, payment information, or recovery codes into the flagged page.
- Inspect: read the complete hostname and look for substitutions, extra domain levels, or unusual international characters.
- Reopen safely: use a known bookmark or manually enter the organization’s verified address.
- Check the result: confirm that the final address, certificate indication, and page purpose match what you expected.
- Escalate when needed: on a work device, preserve the address and contact IT or security instead of bypassing policy controls.
This process separates a browser’s similarity signal from your final judgment. It also protects you when no warning appears, because neither browser claims complete coverage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can two people get different Chrome warnings for the same domain?
Chrome compares a requested address with sites that are popular and with sites in the current user’s browsing history. Because that personal history differs between profiles, the same domain can match one person’s comparison set more strongly than another’s.
Does an Edge typo warning prove that the website is malicious?
No. It indicates that the address resembles a common web address and may be a mistaken or deceptive destination. Confirm the intended domain independently; SmartScreen’s separate reputation check can provide another signal, but neither warning should replace verification.
Is Website Typo Protection available in Edge on iPhone or iPad?
Microsoft’s 2026 policy documentation lists iOS as not supported. The same documentation lists Windows 96 or later, macOS 96 or later, and Android 124 or later as supported minimums.
Can a company disable Chrome’s lookalike warnings?
Chromium documentation references an enterprise policy that can selectively disable the warnings. The setting is managed rather than exposed as a normal consumer toggle, so users on a managed device should ask their administrator about the organization’s policy.
