To assign a three-finger touchpad tap to Cortana in Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Devices > Touchpad. If Windows identifies the laptop as having a Precision Touchpad, open Three-finger gestures and select Cortana in the Taps drop-down. Microsoft describes the command as “Open Cortana | Tap three fingers on the touchpad.” The setting is built into Windows rather than installed as a separate utility, but it may not appear on non-Precision hardware.
How do I enable a three-finger tap to launch Cortana?
The setting is available from Windows 10’s Touchpad page. You must use the touchpad’s Taps assignment, not the separate swipe controls.

- Open the Start menu and select Settings.
- Choose Devices, then select Touchpad in the left pane.
- Look near the top of the page for the message “Your PC has a precision touchpad.”
- Scroll to Three-finger gestures.
- Open the Taps drop-down menu.
- Select Cortana.
- Touch the pad with three fingers at the same time to test the assignment.
If Cortana is offered, Windows stores the gesture assignment in the touchpad settings. You do not need to download a Cortana plug-in or a separate gesture application.
What does the three-finger tap actually do?
The gesture is a tap with three fingers on the touchpad surface. It is different from dragging three fingers, swiping, or pressing the touchpad’s physical click mechanism. Windows treats the tap as the action selected in the Taps menu.

How can I confirm that the change was saved?
Return to Settings > Devices > Touchpad > Three-finger gestures and check that Taps still displays Cortana. Then close Settings and perform one deliberate three-finger tap near the center of the pad. If the selection remains visible but nothing opens, the configuration may be present even though the Cortana service is no longer available, as explained below.
Why is the Cortana option missing from Windows 10 Touchpad settings?
The built-in three-finger menu depends on a Windows Precision Touchpad. Microsoft warns that some touchpad gestures work only with precision touchpads, so a laptop without that hardware may not show the same controls.
Check for Precision Touchpad support
On the Touchpad page, look for the exact statement “Your PC has a precision touchpad.” If it appears, Windows should provide the modern three- and four-finger gesture menus, including drop-down assignments when the device and driver expose them.
If the statement does not appear, Windows is not identifying the touchpad as a Precision Touchpad. That does not prove that three-finger input is impossible; it means the control is not managed by the standard Windows Precision interface.

Use the manufacturer’s gesture panel on non-Precision hardware
Under Related Settings on the Touchpad page, select Additional Settings. Windows opens the laptop maker’s traditional Click or Touchpad Gestures panel when that driver supplies one. The names and available actions vary by manufacturer, so there is no universal Windows path beyond this link.
Look for a three-finger tap, multi-finger gesture, or tapping section in that panel. If the utility has a Cortana entry, select it, apply the change, and test the gesture. If it has no Cortana entry, the installed driver does not expose that assignment through its own controls.

Both approaches can provide multi-finger actions, but they are controlled by different software layers. The distinction determines which menu you can use and which actions are available.

Replacing a driver can change which interface appears, but the available evidence establishes only that controls depend on the touchpad hardware and driver. Do not assume that every laptop can gain the Precision menu through a software toggle.

Which actions can replace Cortana in the three-finger menu?
The three- and four-finger gesture sections use drop-down menus, so a supported system can assign another action when Cortana is absent or no longer useful. Microsoft’s Windows Insider documentation listed several alternatives.

Some Windows Insider builds also exposed an Advanced Gestures Configuration page. Its presence and exact choices are version- and driver-dependent, so use the options that are actually displayed on your PC rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Why can a three-finger tap still show Cortana but do nothing?
The menu entry can survive after the service it targets has changed. Microsoft states that Cortana voice assistance as a standalone Windows app was retired in spring 2023. Therefore, a legacy Windows 10 installation may still display Cortana or retain the mapping while no longer opening a supported Cortana assistant. This is an inference from Microsoft’s gesture description and retirement notice, not a claim that every computer behaves identically.
Interpret the symptom correctly
- Cortana is absent from the menu: Check whether the computer has a Precision Touchpad. If not, inspect Additional Settings and the manufacturer utility.
- Cortana is selectable but the tap has no visible result: The assignment may have been saved, but the retired standalone assistant may not provide a destination.
- The menu resets or the gesture disappears: The touchpad driver or its manufacturer control panel is managing the setting instead of the standard Precision interface.
- Another action works from the same menu: The touchpad is recognizing the gesture; the problem is specific to the Cortana target rather than three-finger detection itself.

Work through the checks in this order so you can separate a hardware-recognition problem from an unavailable Cortana target.

- Reopen the exact settings page. Go to Start > Settings > Devices > Touchpad and verify that Three-finger gestures is present.
- Check the hardware label. Confirm whether the page says “Your PC has a precision touchpad.” The standard gesture controls are conditional on that support.
- Inspect the selected action. In Three-finger gestures > Taps, verify that the intended action is still selected. A previously chosen action may have been replaced.
- Test a different listed action. Temporarily choose an available alternative such as Action Center, play/pause, or middle mouse button. If that responds, the tap is being detected and Cortana is the failing target.
- Open Additional Settings if Precision support is absent. Under Related Settings, choose Additional Settings and inspect the laptop maker’s Click or Touchpad Gestures panel.
- Apply the manufacturer utility’s setting. If that panel provides a three-finger assignment, save it there rather than in the Windows Precision menu.
- Recheck after returning to Windows. A manufacturer utility may control the touchpad independently, so confirm which panel still shows the active assignment.
These checks cannot restore a retired Cortana service. They can establish whether the issue is missing Precision support, a driver-controlled interface, an unselected mapping, or a target that no longer responds.
Does Windows 10 still support this Cortana gesture?
The gesture setting is a legacy Windows 10 feature, and its usefulness is limited by two separate dates. Cortana’s standalone Windows voice-assistance app was retired in spring 2023. Windows 10 support itself ended on October 14, 2025; existing installations continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides normal technical, software, or security updates for them.
Consequently, the three-finger assignment can remain visible on an existing installation without representing a current, supported assistant workflow. Treat the Cortana choice as a compatibility remnant: it may do nothing, while the same gesture menu can still offer other actions that your system supports.

Keep the assignment only if the tap produces the result you want on your particular installation. If it does not, choosing another available action makes the gesture useful without changing the rest of your touchpad configuration.

Keep Cortana when
- The Cortana entry is present and the tap opens a working assistant component on your installation.
- You specifically need to preserve an older Windows 10 setup for compatibility reasons.
- You have recorded the current assignment and can change it back if another action is less convenient.
Choose another action when
- The tap is detected but Cortana produces no response.
- You prefer a system command such as Action Center or a media command such as play/pause.
- Your non-Precision touchpad utility exposes a different set of reliable actions.
No separate Cortana installation is required for the gesture setting, and buying new hardware is not necessary to try the procedure. Hardware matters only when your existing touchpad lacks the Precision interface or the manufacturer driver does not expose the needed gesture.
What should I record before changing the gesture?
Note the action currently shown in the Taps menu and, if applicable, the setting displayed in the manufacturer’s gesture panel. This gives you a simple rollback reference when testing Cortana or another command, especially on systems where two different panels can influence touchpad behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a three-finger tap the same as pressing the touchpad button three times?
No. The Windows command refers to placing three fingers on the touchpad and tapping the surface together. Repeated physical clicks are a different input and are not the gesture described by the Windows setting.
Can I try another gesture action without permanently losing my previous choice?
Yes. Before changing the drop-down, note the current selection, test the alternative, and return to the recorded choice if needed. This is particularly useful when a manufacturer utility and the Windows Touchpad page expose different controls.
Why might the same laptop show different gesture menus after a driver change?
Windows displays the Precision interface only when the hardware and driver identify the touchpad that way. A manufacturer-controlled driver can instead move gesture options into its own Click or Touchpad Gestures panel, changing both the location and the available commands.
Does this setting install Cortana on a computer that never had it?
No. The touchpad page only assigns an input gesture to an existing Windows command. It does not add an assistant package, restore the retired standalone app, or create a new Cortana service.
