A Minecraft SMP is a persistent survival multiplayer world where a group gathers resources, builds, explores, fights mobs and bosses, and decides how competitive or cooperative the community will be. To start one, first make the Java-versus-Bedrock decision with every player, then choose between a managed Realm, a self-hosted Java server, or the official Bedrock Dedicated Server.

The right option depends less on raw player count than on your group’s devices, appetite for administration, need for customization, and willingness to keep a computer and network available. This guide takes you from that decision through setup, rules, security, backups, invitations, and troubleshooting.

What an SMP actually is

SMP stands for survival multiplayer. In practical terms, it is a survival world that remains available for multiple players instead of belonging to one person’s single-player save. Players usually share a seed and economy, establish bases, gather materials, travel to the Nether and End, and decide whether to cooperate, compete, or do both.

The world is persistent: progress remains after someone logs out, and the host or service keeps the save available for the next session. That persistence makes an SMP different from a one-off LAN game. A group can build a town over weeks, create a shared transport network, run shops, organize events, or reset a season according to rules agreed in advance.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Common SMP styles

  • Cooperative survival: players share projects, resources, farms, and major expeditions.
  • Light role-play: bases, towns, political borders, and story events give the world a theme.
  • Community economy: players trade items, operate shops, and use a shared currency or barter system.
  • Competitive survival: PvP, rival factions, races, or limited resources create conflict within published rules.
  • Seasonal SMP: the world runs for a defined period before a planned reset or new chapter.

An SMP is not automatically public, modded, or competitive. It can be a private world for a few friends, a larger whitelisted community, or a heavily customized server. The defining feature is persistent survival play with more than one player.

Choose Java or Bedrock before you buy or configure anything

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are separate environments. They do not form one universal multiplayer pool: Java players join Java-hosted games, while Bedrock players join Bedrock worlds, servers, Realms, or LAN games. Everyone should use a compatible game version, preferably the latest release supported by the chosen host.

Question Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Who can join? Players using Java Edition and a matching version. Players using Bedrock Edition and a matching version.
Typical device reach Computers that run Java Edition. Bedrock-supported platforms, including its console, mobile, and Windows ecosystem.
Official dedicated option Downloadable Java server software that you operate. Official Bedrock Dedicated Server software for supported Windows and Ubuntu Linux systems.
Administration model Self-hosting exposes extensive server and operating-system settings. Realms is managed; Bedrock Dedicated Server is operated by you.
Cross-edition play Not with Bedrock by default. Not with Java by default.

Ask every prospective player which edition and device they own. If even one person has the other edition, do not assume a Java server or Bedrock server will accept them. The edition choice determines the hosting choices, files, updates, and troubleshooting path for the entire group.

Check versions before inviting anyone

Have the host and clients install the same compatible release. A client on an incompatible release can fail to connect even when the address and credentials are correct. When the launcher or game offers an update, coordinate the update with the server operator rather than letting one player change versions alone.

Pick a hosting model

There are three practical starting points. Realms minimizes infrastructure work. Java self-hosting gives the organizer the most direct control over a Java world. Bedrock Dedicated Server is the official dedicated-software route for a Bedrock group that wants to run its own machine.

Option Best for What you manage Main trade-off
Realms A small private group that values convenience. World settings, invitations, member permissions, and community rules. It is a subscription service with less operating-system and server-file control.
Java self-hosting Java players who want control over files, configuration, and customization. Java runtime, server files, firewall, router, uptime, updates, backups, and security. More setup and continuing technical responsibility.
Bedrock Dedicated Server Bedrock players who want official dedicated software on their own machine. Supported operating system, server package, network access, updates, backups, and moderation. You still provide the computer, broadband connection, and administration.

When Realms is the sensible choice

Choose Realms when the priority is getting friends into a shared world without configuring a home router or leaving a personal computer running as a server. Minecraft describes a Realm as a subscription to a personal Minecraft server for playing online with friends in shared worlds across devices. The service is managed for you, so the organizer spends time on the world and its rules instead of operating-system maintenance.

Realms is a poor fit when you need deep server-file access, unusual automation, extensive custom server software, or complete control of the machine. It also does not remove the need to choose the correct edition: a Java Realm and a Bedrock Realm serve their respective editions.

When Java self-hosting is worth the work

Self-host Java when the group wants direct access to configuration and server files, is comfortable maintaining a computer, or wants a level of customization that a managed service does not expose. The official Java server software is free to download, but “free” refers to the software itself. The host still pays in electricity, hardware wear, bandwidth, administrator time, and possibly a separate hosting arrangement.

When Bedrock Dedicated Server is the better route

Use Bedrock Dedicated Server when everyone is on Bedrock and you want official dedicated software rather than a Realm. The package supports Windows and Ubuntu Linux. Published requirements include 4 GB of RAM, between 180 MB and 1 GB of available storage depending on the package and operating conditions, and broadband internet. Linux requires Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later; Windows must meet the minimum version stated on the current Bedrock Dedicated Server requirements page.

Plan the SMP before creating the world

A few minutes of planning prevents the most common social and technical failures. Write down decisions where every invited player can read them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the group and access policy

  • List the initial players and decide whether new members need an invitation or approval.
  • Choose whether the world is private, whitelisted, or open to a broader community.
  • Decide who can restart the server, change settings, restore backups, and remove players.
  • Set an expected play schedule if the host machine will not run continuously.

Choose the survival rules

  • State whether PvP is always on, limited to agreed areas, or disabled.
  • Define griefing, stealing, prank, and property-boundary rules.
  • Decide whether farms, duplication glitches, commands, or external maps are allowed.
  • Explain how warnings, temporary bans, permanent bans, and appeals work.
  • Specify whether the world can be reset, when a season ends, and who approves a reset.

Decide how progress is protected

Set a backup schedule before the first major build. Keep at least one copy away from the live server machine so a disk failure, accidental deletion, or corrupted save does not destroy every copy. Record the backup location and test a restoration on a spare copy; a file that has never been restored is only an assumption, not a recovery plan.

Start an SMP with Realms

Realms is the shortest path when the group wants a managed private world. The exact menus can change as the launcher and game are updated, but the process follows the same order.

  1. Confirm that every player uses the same edition: Java or Bedrock.
  2. From the edition’s multiplayer or Realms screen, start the Realm subscription using the account that will administer it.
  3. Create a new survival world or select an existing compatible world to upload.
  4. Set the world’s difficulty, game rules, and any available permissions before inviting people.
  5. Invite players through the Realm member controls. Share invitations only with the people covered by your rules.
  6. Run a short test session: have one invited player join, place and break blocks, leave, and reconnect.
  7. Document who can manage members and what happens if the subscription is paused or the organizer is unavailable.

Realms removes home-router configuration, but it does not solve social governance. Keep the same written rules, backup awareness, and version discipline you would use on a self-hosted server.

Set up a Java SMP on your own computer

Java self-hosting is the most hands-on option. Minecraft’s official guidance cautions that configuring a home network is not recommended unless the operator understands the risks and the networking steps. Begin with a computer that can remain available during play, a stable broadband connection, enough free storage for the world and backups, and an account with permission to install software and change firewall settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the runtime and server software

  1. Install a Java runtime compatible with the server release you intend to run. Keep the runtime updated through a trusted source and note its installation path.
  2. Download the official Java server JAR from Minecraft’s server-download page. Store it in a dedicated folder rather than your desktop or a system directory.
  3. Open a terminal or command prompt in that folder and launch the JAR once with a command such as java -jar server.jar nogui, replacing server.jar with the actual filename.
  4. Allow the first launch to finish. It should create configuration files and a world directory before stopping because the EULA has not yet been accepted.
  5. Open eula.txt, read the license, and change the EULA setting to accept it only if you agree. Save the file.
  6. Launch the same server command again and wait for the console to report that the world is ready. Stop it through the console rather than closing the window abruptly.

The official server software is free to download. The download does not include a hosted machine, a public address, automatic backups, or technical support for your home network.

Configure a local-area SMP first

For players on the same home network, test locally before exposing anything to the internet. Start the server, find the host computer’s local address, and have another player use the game’s multiplayer screen to connect according to the server’s displayed address or discovery method. A successful local test confirms that the Java runtime, server files, world generation, and client versions agree.

Prepare internet access cautiously

  1. Assign the host computer a stable local address so a router rule does not point to a different device later.
  2. Allow the server application through the computer’s firewall only as broadly as necessary. Keep unrelated services blocked.
  3. Configure the router’s port-forwarding rule to send the Minecraft server traffic to the host computer. The exact fields and labels differ by router.
  4. Test from outside the home network, such as a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot. Testing only from inside can hide forwarding mistakes.
  5. Give players the public address privately. Do not post it in a public chat or combine it with personal information.
  6. Remove the forwarding rule if the server is retired, and review the rule after router or operating-system updates.

Port forwarding exposes a service from your home network. Use a firewall, keep the operating system and server software updated, grant administrative permissions sparingly, and never share console credentials. If you cannot confidently identify the router, firewall, and server settings, use Realms or a managed host instead of improvising.

Set up a Bedrock Dedicated Server

Bedrock Dedicated Server is official software for running a Bedrock world on supported Windows or Ubuntu Linux hardware. Verify the current requirements before downloading: the published baseline is 4 GB of RAM, 180 MB to 1 GB of available storage, broadband internet, and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later for Linux. The supported Windows minimum is defined by the current requirements page and should be checked against the machine you plan to use.

  5. Review the generated settings before inviting anyone. Set the world name, game mode, difficulty, player permissions, and any access controls available in the package.
  6. Allow the server through the operating-system firewall and configure router access only if players outside your home network must connect.
  7. Connect from a Bedrock client on the same version, then test an external connection before announcing the address.
  8. Schedule backups, updates, and orderly shutdowns. Stop the process cleanly before copying a live world.

Do not mix Java clients with this server or assume that an address working for a Java server will work for Bedrock. Edition and version compatibility remain the first checks whenever a player cannot connect.

Configure permissions, moderation, and the world

Technical access is only half of an SMP. A clear permission structure prevents a trusted helper from accidentally gaining more authority than intended.

Use least privilege

  • Keep full server administration limited to one or two reliable people.
  • Give building or event helpers only the permissions required for their task.
  • Separate technical access from moderation decisions when possible.
  • Review the member and operator list after someone leaves.

Make the first session a test

Ask everyone to join at the same time for a short orientation. Demonstrate the spawn area, storage rules, safe logout practices, reporting channel, and backup policy. Check that players can reconnect after the host restarts the server. Resolve permission and version errors before the group invests in a large shared build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect shared areas

Mark spawn, community farms, transport hubs, and storage rooms clearly. Agree on a simple claim or boundary convention even if you do not install additional protection software. A written rule that says who owns a build and how abandoned structures are handled is more useful than an unwritten assumption.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Backups, updates, and routine maintenance

A self-hosted SMP needs an operating routine. Put the following on a calendar:

  • Before updates: stop the server cleanly, copy the world, and note the old server version.
  • After updates: start with a test copy when possible, confirm that the world loads, and check client compatibility.
  • Daily or session-based: make an automatic or manual world backup according to how much progress the group can afford to lose.
  • Weekly: copy a backup to a different drive or location and verify that files can be read.
  • Monthly: review disk space, firewall rules, member permissions, and whether the host’s operating system is current.

Never overwrite the only known-good backup with a file created after corruption appears. Keep several dated restore points, and record which server version produced each one. Before a major world change, create an additional manual snapshot.

Cost and responsibility

Realms uses a recurring subscription. Its value is the managed infrastructure and reduced setup work, not unlimited customization. Java server software and Bedrock Dedicated Server software are available from Minecraft without a software purchase price, but self-hosting transfers the cost to your equipment, electricity, broadband usage, storage, maintenance time, and network administration. A computer that is already powered on may make self-hosting practical; a low-power machine bought solely for the SMP changes the calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not promise a particular player limit, performance level, subscription price, or merchant availability without checking the current edition and service terms. Those details can vary by edition, region, plan, and date. Base the decision on the stable trade-offs: managed convenience versus control and responsibility.

Troubleshoot the failures players see most

The player gets an edition or version error

Confirm that the client and server are both Java or both Bedrock, then compare their exact release versions. Update or roll back the outlier so every participant uses the server’s supported release. Do not troubleshoot router settings until edition and version match.

The server works locally but not over the internet

Check that the host’s local address has not changed, the firewall rule allows the server, and the router forwards traffic to the correct device. Test from outside the home network. If the public address changed, send the current address privately to invited players. Remove duplicate or stale forwarding rules.

The server stops immediately after launch

Read the console output from the first error upward. Verify that the Java runtime is compatible for a Java server, that the server folder is writable, and that the EULA setting was accepted. For Bedrock, confirm that the package matches the operating system and that required files were not left inside a compressed archive.

The world is laggy or unavailable

Check whether the host computer is overloaded, low on available memory or storage, or busy with unrelated tasks. Ask whether every player is affected; a single player’s network or device can create a local problem. Reduce simultaneous heavy activity, stop unnecessary applications, and inspect the server console for repeated errors. Do not delete a world to solve lag until a backup exists.

A player griefs or steals

Preserve the relevant logs or screenshots, remove the player’s access while the incident is reviewed, and apply the published warning or ban process consistently. Restore a backup only after deciding how much legitimate progress would be lost. Update the rules or permissions if the incident exposed an avoidable gap.

Launch checklist

  1. Every player has confirmed the same edition and compatible version.
  2. The hosting choice matches the group’s technical skills and desired control.
  3. The world has written rules for PvP, griefing, theft, moderation, and resets.
  4. The first backup exists, is dated, and is stored separately from the live world.
  5. The host has tested a clean shutdown and restart.
  6. Local and, when needed, external connections have both been tested.
  7. Only the intended people have administrative permissions.
  8. The server address is shared privately with invited players.
  9. Everyone knows how to report a problem and who can restore a backup.

Which SMP setup should you choose?

Choose Realms if your group wants the fastest, least technical route to a private shared world and accepts a managed subscription. Choose Java self-hosting if all players use Java and you want direct control over server files, configuration, and the machine running the world. Choose Bedrock Dedicated Server if everyone uses Bedrock and you are prepared to operate supported Windows or Ubuntu hardware, networking, updates, and backups.

In every case, the successful order is the same: settle edition compatibility, define the community rules, test a small session, protect the world with backups, and only then expand the invitation list. That sequence turns an SMP from a one-night experiment into a world your friends can safely keep building.
