Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma reportedly told an internal Xbox town hall that the company must keep building original properties while investing heavily in its established franchises. Windows Central’s Jez Corden reported the remarks on 12 October 2026, citing an unauthorized transcript shared by multiple trusted sources. Microsoft has not publicly released the transcript or independently confirmed the wording, so the statement remains a report about an internal meeting—not a published Xbox policy.

What Windows Central reported

According to Corden, Sharma addressed Xbox’s content strategy at a town hall held the previous week. The central passage reported by Windows Central reads: “We’re backing our strongest franchises. I want our great games to become great global billion-dollar franchises. I would also like to see us continue to create enduring new IP. We will not survive if we only revive on the past. We have to find new ways, and courage, to have invention on new IP, that reaches new sets of audiences.”

That wording should be attributed to Sharma as reported by Windows Central. It is not an official quotation published by Xbox, and no public transcript or separate official confirmation was identified. The report also does not name a new project, provide a budget, or set a timetable for original games.

How the report fits Sharma’s public mandate

Microsoft officially named Sharma CEO of Microsoft Gaming on 20 February 2026. In the announcement, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said Sharma’s experience with platforms, business models and global operations would be critical to the gaming business’s next era of growth.

Sharma’s own message that day offered a public version of the same balancing act: “We will empower our studios, invest in iconic franchises, and back bold new ideas. We will take risks.” That statement confirms a stated intention to support both existing series and experimentation, but it does not verify the later town-hall transcript or show how resources would be divided.

Xbox’s stated strategy: a portfolio, not a single bet

An Xbox leadership message published on 23 April 2026 described the commercial pressure behind the strategy. Matt Booty and Sharma wrote that players have access to more games than ever while “the cost and time to build blockbuster titles continues to rise, putting pressure on what gets made and how risk is taken.”

The same strategy emphasizes growing an enduring portfolio of franchises, strengthening the third-party slate, reaching mobile-first audiences, and supporting live games and creator-led platforms. Xbox said it reached more than 500 million players worldwide in that communication; the figure is company-reported and was not independently audited in the cited material.

That creates a clear tension. Recognized franchises offer existing awareness and a base of players, but dependence on sequels can narrow creative variety. New intellectual property has the opposite profile: it can reach new audiences and become a long-term asset, yet it requires years of development and carries a higher probability of commercial failure. The reported town-hall comments describe that tension more bluntly than Xbox’s public documents, without revealing a changed investment formula.

What the 2026 studio changes mean for the claim

Xbox’s 22 September employee update, written by Matt Booty, described major organizational changes and divestitures. The update said Compulsion and Double Fine would return to management with their intellectual property and back catalogs, while Undead Labs would transition with its IP. It also described consultation involving Ninja Theory and Arkane.

Those statuses were reported as of the date of the update. Consultation and proposed transitions should not be read as completed closures or finalized reorganizations. The changes matter to the new-IP discussion because studio ownership, leadership and back catalogs affect which teams can pursue original projects and which resources remain focused on established series.

From games to broader entertainment franchises

On 8 October 2026, Xbox announced XP, a division intended to extend game properties through film and television, consumer products, partnerships and live experiences. Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball wrote: “Our ambition at XBOX is to be the number one entertainment company in the world. This means growing our games into enduring franchises that entertain, inspire and connect people across every generation and across the globe.”

XP is evidence of a broader franchise-expansion strategy, not evidence that the reported town-hall wording is authentic. The announcement’s background says Minecraft grew from 350 million units sold to more than 425 million during Kayleen Walters’ tenure at Mojang. That statistic illustrates the value Xbox places on building durable properties, but it says nothing about a specific original-IP slate.

What is—and is not—known about new Xbox IP

Question What the available reporting establishes
Was the town-hall quote officially published? No. Windows Central attributed it to an unauthorized transcript from multiple trusted sources.
Has Xbox announced a new-IP program? No named program, project list, budget allocation or delivery timetable was provided.
Does Xbox still prioritize existing franchises? Yes. Official 2026 communications repeatedly describe investment in iconic or enduring franchises.
Has Xbox publicly left room for original ideas? Yes. Sharma’s February message explicitly mentions backing bold new ideas and taking risks.
Does XP confirm the town-hall report? No. XP concerns extending franchises across entertainment and products, not validating an internal transcript.

What to watch next

  • Whether Microsoft or Xbox publishes the town-hall transcript or confirms Sharma’s exact wording.
  • Whether Xbox identifies original projects, leadership teams or funding priorities that turn the general commitment into a measurable plan.
  • How the studio consultations and proposed transitions described on 22 September are resolved.
  • Whether XP announces specific adaptations, products or live experiences tied to particular franchises.

Until one of those developments occurs, the most supportable reading is limited: Windows Central reports that Sharma wants Xbox to protect its strongest franchises while finding the courage to create original properties capable of lasting for years. The public record supports that broad direction, but it does not establish a new-IP quota, schedule or project slate.
