Evaluate an Overcooked-style AI agent on more than its score. Measure shared task outcomes, how the teammates coordinate, whether the agent works with unfamiliar partners and kitchens, how it handles failures, and—if it communicates—whether its language helps the team adapt. Use held-out test conditions, repeated episodes and seeds, and real-human trials where possible. A high reward shows that a team completed tasks; by itself, it does not prove that the agent cooperated well.

What does a cooperative-game evaluation need to measure?

It needs to distinguish the result of teamwork from the process that produced it. In Overcooked-AI, players jointly prepare and deliver soups: they place ingredients in pots, wait for cooking, pick up finished soup, and deliver it. They share reward, and success depends on dividing work and coordinating actions. Because one agent’s score is entangled with its partner’s behavior, a single reward number cannot reveal whether the agent adapted, made useful handoffs, or simply benefited from a partner that did the hard work.

Build an evaluation around six layers, then report them separately:

  1. Shared outcome: What did the team complete, how reliably, and how quickly?
  2. Coordination process: Did the agents allocate tasks, avoid interfering, and recover from mistakes?
  3. Partner generalization: Does the agent still work with teammates it did not train alongside?
  4. Environment generalization: Does it handle unfamiliar kitchens, object arrangements, orders, or rules?
  5. Robustness: What happens when paths are blocked, timing changes, or a handoff fails?
  6. Communication and adaptation: For language-capable agents, do they communicate usefully and change course as play unfolds?

These layers answer different questions. Report them as a profile rather than blending them into one composite score: an agent can complete many orders in familiar conditions while remaining brittle with a new teammate, or communicate fluently without coordinating effectively.

Is a higher Overcooked score enough to prove cooperation?

No. Reward measures the outcome of a team, not how much its members relied on one another or how well they coordinated. The AAAI 2026 study by Upasana Biswas, Vardhan Palod, Siddhant Bhambri, and Subbarao Kambhampati states that “task reward alone cannot reliably measure cooperation arising within a human-agent team.”

That distinction matters whenever one player can carry a task, when the partner is unusually predictable, or when a policy succeeds through a strategy that leaves little meaningful work for the other agent. A useful evaluation therefore pairs reward with process evidence: actions, task assignments, waits, collisions, handoffs, and recovery events. A high score plus evidence of constructive interdependence supports a stronger claim about cooperation than a high score alone.

Measure outcomes without hiding failures

At minimum, record soups or orders delivered, score per episode, completion rate, time-to-delivery, and catastrophic failures. Keep episode-level results, not only an average. The mean describes typical performance, while the distribution can show that an agent sometimes stalls, collides repeatedly, or fails an entire order. Define “catastrophic failure” for the benchmark before testing—for example, an event that prevents an order from being completed—so readers know what the count means.

Measure the work behind the result

Process metrics should be defined in operational terms before evaluation begins. Track constructive interdependence: whether each teammate’s actions are genuinely relied upon in completing shared work. Also track useful handoffs, role or task allocation, collision time, idle time, deadlock frequency, and recovery after mistakes. These are not interchangeable measures: low idle time does not establish good role allocation, and a handoff count does not show whether those handoffs were useful.

For comparisons, make the direction and unit of each metric explicit. State what counts as a collision, a deadlock, a handoff, or recovery; specify whether time is measured in environment steps or another fixed unit. Without such definitions, two papers can report similarly named metrics that capture different behavior.

How should I test an agent with unfamiliar teammates?

Use a partner matrix instead of evaluating only with the agent’s training partner. Include the training partner as a reference, then pair the agent with held-out scripted or reinforcement-learning partners, human behavior models, and real people when feasible. Report each pairing; an average across partners can conceal a severe failure with one class of teammate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep partner policies separated by split. A policy used to train or tune the agent should not also count as an unseen test partner. Define training, validation, and test partner sets before training, and reserve the test set for final evaluation. This prevents the evaluation from quietly becoming another tuning loop.

Build a partner matrix readers can interpret

For every agent, record results against each partner category and, where practical, each individual policy. Include both outcome and process measures in each pairing: delivered orders and failures alongside collisions, idle time, handoffs, task allocation, and recovery. If a partner is a human model, describe what distinguishes it from the other models; the label alone does not tell readers what behavior the test represents.

Compare familiar-partner performance with held-out-partner performance. Report the gap in the same units as the underlying metric, and include episode distributions or uncertainty estimates. A gap is informative only when its reference conditions are clear: the agent, layout, order distribution, and other settings should be held constant where possible.

Why human teammates change the evaluation

Algorithmic partners can be useful and repeatable, but they do not stand in for people. Carroll and colleagues’ NeurIPS 2019 work found that self-play and population-trained agents could coordinate with themselves yet perform substantially worse with human models; adapting to human gameplay improved coordination. That finding is a reason to test partner transfer explicitly, not a guarantee that one adaptation method will work for every agent or human player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For real-human trials, pretrain participants on the controls and task, randomize the order in which they play with the agents, and collect multiple episodes. Record objective outcomes as well as post-game ratings of teamwork, predictability, contribution, fluency, and willingness to play again. Randomizing order helps prevent an agent from always receiving the benefit—or burden—of being played first or last.

How do I test generalization to new kitchens and task conditions?

Separate familiar layouts from held-out ones, and include procedurally varied kitchens and novel environments where available. Also vary object arrangements, order distributions, and interaction constraints when those are part of the intended use. Report seen-versus-unseen results rather than combining them into one headline number.

The Overcooked Generalisation Challenge (OGC) was created to test novel partners and unfamiliar environments. Ruhdorfer and colleagues’ TMLR 2025 work reports that current methods struggle with the joint challenge of novel partners and novel layouts. Test those shifts jointly as well as separately: an agent that handles a new layout with a familiar partner may still fail when both partner and kitchen are unfamiliar.

Keep the split meaningful

Define the split before training. Keep test kitchens and partner policies out of training and validation, and document which variations are considered familiar or novel. If a layout is procedurally generated, describe the generator or the held-out variation type sufficiently for another team to reproduce the distinction. The OGC is a relevant starting point for a benchmark that explicitly targets these generalization questions.

When comparing conditions, make the change visible. A compact table can help readers see the evaluation’s main dimensions:

Comparison What it reveals
Familiar partner and familiar layout Performance in the agent’s known setting
Unfamiliar partner and familiar layout Partner generalization without a layout shift
Familiar partner and unfamiliar layout Environment generalization without a partner shift
Unfamiliar partner and unfamiliar layout Performance under combined shifts

For each condition, retain the same outcome and process metrics. A score drop identifies a performance change; the trajectory can help show whether it came from poor task division, collisions, missed handoffs, or failure to recover.

What robustness tests expose failures that average reward misses?

Probe edge cases deliberately instead of relying on average validation reward to expose them. Microsoft Research recommends edge-case tests because average validation reward can conceal failures. Create repeatable, unit-test-style scenarios for blocked paths, delayed partners, ambiguous role ownership, unexpected ingredient placement, failed handoffs, and recovery after a dropped or overcooked order.

Make each probe diagnosable

For each case, record the initial condition, the expected opportunity to respond, the observed trajectory, and whether the team recovered. Keep the perturbation narrow enough to interpret: if a test simultaneously changes the layout, partner policy, and order sequence, a failure is difficult to attribute. After single-factor probes, combined shifts can test whether failures compound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Blocked path: Observe whether the agent waits indefinitely, chooses another route, or renegotiates the task.
  • Delayed partner: Check whether it can continue independent work or adapts its timing instead of repeatedly attempting a blocked handoff.
  • Ambiguous role ownership: See whether both agents duplicate a subtask or leave it unclaimed.
  • Unexpected ingredient placement: Check if the agent notices the changed state and updates its plan.
  • Failed handoff: Record whether the agent detects the failure and finds another way to transfer or complete the work.
  • Dropped or overcooked order: Measure whether it resumes useful work rather than remaining stuck on a lost order.

Report a robustness-test pass rate only with the test set and pass criteria defined. A pass-rate headline without those details is not portable: one benchmark’s cases may be easy for another agent or may omit the failure modes that matter for a particular game.

How should language-capable agents be evaluated?

Evaluate both what the agent says and whether its communication changes team behavior for the better. Useful process measures include competence-boundary awareness, task-critical communication, active collaboration, and continuous adaptation. A fluent transcript is not evidence by itself that the agent interpreted the task correctly, assigned work effectively, or responded to a partner.

Collab-Overcooked evaluates 13 LLMs on 30 open-ended tasks and reports strong goal interpretation alongside weaknesses in active collaboration and continuous adaptation. The benchmark’s process-oriented emphasis is useful because language agents can sound coherent while still failing to take initiative or revise a plan as the situation changes.

Connect communication to events in the game

Log messages alongside state, action, subtask, and outcome. Then ask whether a message was task-critical, whether the partner could act on it, and whether the agent changed its behavior after new information. For example, a message about taking a task matters only if it clarifies ownership or helps coordinate a later action; record the corresponding action sequence rather than treating the text alone as success.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test communication under changing conditions, including failed handoffs, new ingredient locations, or an unexpected partner delay. Measure whether the agent notices the change, communicates relevant information, and adjusts subsequent actions. Separate interpretation, initiative, and adaptation in reporting: success on one does not establish the others.

How can I make the results reproducible and fair?

Use multiple random seeds, episode-level distributions, confidence intervals, and a fixed evaluation protocol. Release code and trajectory data where permitted. Document the agent version, partner and layout splits, test cases, episode settings, and metric definitions so another group can understand what was evaluated and reproduce the comparison.

Use the same evaluation conditions for every agent in a comparison, including the partner matrix, layouts, orders, robustness probes, and reporting rules. If compute, latency, or sample efficiency matter to the intended use, report them as additional comparison axes rather than treating reward as a substitute. Include the measurement setup for these resource costs; the available data does not establish universal thresholds for what counts as acceptable latency or compute.

For statistical interpretation, show uncertainty next to the estimate and the underlying spread across episodes. Do not infer that small differences are meaningful merely because one mean is numerically higher. A fixed protocol and confidence intervals make it easier to distinguish a stable performance difference from run-to-run variation.

What a comparison should include

A useful agent comparison covers mean and tail task performance; familiar-versus-unseen partner gaps; familiar-versus-novel layout gaps; constructive interdependence; communication and adaptation quality; robustness-test pass rate; human-rated teamwork and predictability; compute, latency, and sample efficiency; and reproducibility of the protocol. Not every project will need every axis, but omissions should be apparent rather than hidden by an all-purpose score.

What do published Overcooked studies show about evaluation?

Several lines of work reinforce why an evaluation should cover both team outcomes and transfer. Carroll and colleagues’ 2019 NeurIPS study highlights the difference between self-coordination and performance with human models. Biswas and colleagues’ AAAI 2026 study examines constructive interdependence, showing why reward alone can overstate evidence of teamwork.

Ruhdorfer and colleagues’ 2025 TMLR work on OGC identifies the difficulty of combining new partners with new layouts. Aroca-Ouellette and colleagues’ IJCAI 2025 work reports statistically significant improvement for HA² with unseen agents and humans, as well as resilience to environmental shifts. This is evidence about that method and its tested settings, not a guarantee that hierarchical abstractions will improve every agent.

For ad-hoc teamwork, Jing and colleagues’ ICML/PMLR 306 2026 work introduces ICRL4AHT, with diverse reinforcement-learning and heuristic teammates and controlled train-test shifts in Overcooked-V2. For language agents, Sun and colleagues’ EMNLP 2025 Collab-Overcooked work emphasizes process-oriented evaluation across open-ended tasks. Together these studies point to a practical rule: an evaluation should make the partner, environment, and interaction process visible, not just the final reward.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Overcooked episodes should I run per agent?

There is no episode count established here as sufficient for every benchmark. Choose the number based on pilot variability and the precision you need, then report the episode-level distribution and confidence interval so readers can judge uncertainty rather than relying on an unexplained sample size.

Can I evaluate cooperation from gameplay video alone?

Video can help a person inspect behavior, but it may not reveal hidden state, action timing, or the agent’s assigned subtask. Where possible, pair video with structured trajectory logs so event counts and interpretations can be checked against the underlying actions.

Should I combine reward and teamwork into one score?

A single composite can obscure trade-offs, such as higher output alongside worse coordination or poorer transfer. Report the measures separately; if a project uses a composite for a specific decision, explain its components and weighting rather than presenting it as a universal measure of cooperation.

What is constructive interdependence in an AI team?

It describes whether teammates’ actions are genuinely relied upon in accomplishing the shared task, rather than merely occurring side by side. It is useful alongside outcomes because task completion alone does not show whether the team depended on both members.
