AI-generated game assets are ready to ship only when a human team has verified more than surface polish. Evaluate every image, line, and performance for purpose, consistency, in-game behavior, provenance, rights, representation, accessibility, and player trust. Test complete scenes and representative batches at the settings players will use; then document the tool, model version, prompts or scripts, edits, permissions, and named approval. Use a disclosure when a platform requires one, when AI materially shaped the content, or when silence could make a reasonable player believe a synthetic asset was made by a person.
The practical standard is a human-led gate: an asset passes because an accountable reviewer approves its final expressive choices and can show how it was made, not because an AI tool produced an attractive sample.

Use the same six-part gate for art, writing, and voice, then add modality-specific tests. An asset must fit the game, survive testing in its shipped context, receive human approval, have a traceable and permissioned origin, avoid avoidable player harm, and carry an appropriate disclosure decision.
1. Does it serve a clear purpose and fit the game?
Define the job before judging quality. A background prop, tutorial sentence, branching companion, and boss monologue have different requirements. Check the asset against the game’s art direction, rating, tone, world rules, target audience, and accessibility goals. A technically impressive image that breaks the palette, a joke that undermines a serious scene, or a voice that conflicts with a character’s identity fails the fit test even if it is polished.

Write a short acceptance note for each asset or batch: intended player experience, emotional function, technical target, and known exclusions. This gives reviewers something firmer than personal taste to apply.
2. Has it been tested in the context players will actually see or hear?
Review at final resolution, frame rate, audio mix, subtitle treatment, localization length, and representative hardware. Inspect complete scenes rather than isolated hero samples. A portrait that looks clean at full size can lose facial detail at sprite scale; a line that reads well in a script can collide with animation, overflow a text box, or become confusing when a player interrupts it.
Build a representative batch: ordinary outputs, edge cases, repeated motifs, and assets from every major character or location. Test the full batch for recurring artifacts and consistency. Record the build, display or audio conditions, and language used so a later reviewer can reproduce the decision.
3. Has a named human approved the final expressive choices?
Assign an individual reviewer, not an anonymous team or an automated score. The approver should inspect the final files that will ship, including edits, timing, implementation, and accessibility settings. Keep drafts, rejected versions, prompts or scripts, model name and version, source files, and the approval record where possible.
Human approval is not a ceremonial check. The reviewer must be able to rewrite a line, redraw a silhouette, replace a texture, retime a performance, or reject the asset without regenerating unrelated material.
4. Can you explain where it came from and whether you may use it?
Record source references, licenses, permissions, the generation system and version, prompts or scripts, post-processing, contributors, and the final approver. Search for substantial similarity to existing works instead of assuming that a novel prompt guarantees a novel result. For any identifiable performer or recognizable voice likeness, obtain consent that covers synthesis, intended uses, duration, territory, edits, and reuse.
5. What could the asset communicate about people and players?
Check stereotypes, demeaning patterns, cultural or disability representation, sexual content, violence, and unintended implications in the game’s setting. Review not only the best-case interpretation but also how a player could read the asset in context, including after a branch, interruption, or repeated exposure. Accessibility includes legible silhouettes, readable text, intelligible speech, caption timing, and alternatives for players who cannot see or hear the original presentation.
6. Is the disclosure decision defensible?
Decide whether the platform requires a label and whether a reasonable player could be misled without one. The disclosure section below maps this decision to current platform examples and gives a record to keep with the asset.
How do I evaluate AI-generated art for an indie game?
Judge generated art as production material, not as a gallery image. The pass condition is a coherent, editable asset that remains readable and stylistically consistent across the complete game.
Inspect visual craft at game scale
Zoom in once to find defects, then zoom out to the resolution and camera distance used in play. Inspect anatomy, hands, eyes, perspective, lighting direction, cast and contact shadows, repeated textures, text rendering, silhouettes, and edge treatment. UI icons and sprites must remain recognizable in their actual size and contrast conditions. A beautiful texture that obscures a collision boundary or a tiny symbol that becomes a blob is not finished.

Check consistency across a batch
Place assets from the same character, faction, biome, or interface on one board. Look for recurring artifacts, accidental near-duplicates, inconsistent light sources, drifting proportions, and details that change without a story reason. Compare animation frames and alternate poses, not only the strongest still. If a style guide specifies line weight, palette, lens or perspective, verify each asset against those rules.
Test editability and production constraints
Ask whether an artist can change one required feature without regenerating unrelated details. Separate layers, clean masks, predictable silhouettes, and editable text matter more than a high-resolution source that cannot be revised safely. Check file dimensions, compression, memory budget, draw-call implications, animation compatibility, and console or handheld performance in the actual build.
Verify sources and rights before integration
Keep references and licenses with the asset record. Search substantial similarities to existing art, characters, logos, or distinctive compositions. If a source image, photograph, or performer likeness is identifiable, confirm permission for the exact game use and territory. A clean provenance record should travel with exported files so a contractor or porting team does not lose the context.
For publishing on itch.io, creators are asked to use its AI Disclosure field for generative-AI materials; the service warns that failing to tag asset pages may result in delisting. Treat that field as a release requirement when the game or page contains covered material.
How do I evaluate AI-generated writing and dialogue?
Read the entire playable sequence, including branches and interruptions. A line passes when it advances the scene, sounds like the character, obeys continuity, and remains clear and respectful under the conditions in which players encounter it.
Read scenes in sequence, not line by line
Check each character’s immediate goal, knowledge, relationship, and emotional change. Look for contradictions with earlier scenes, broken foreshadowing, repeated explanations, abrupt shifts in register, and pacing that stalls interaction. Branches should return to a coherent state rather than quietly changing a character’s facts or motivation.
Stress-test branching and interruption
Run every branch at least once, then test late entry, skipped lines, rapid selections, failure states, retries, and interruption by combat or menus. Verify that a response does not assume a choice the player did not make. Check variable names, conditional logic, speaker labels, and fallback text in the build, not only in a dialogue spreadsheet.
Review language for accuracy, agency, and inclusion
Fact-check claims about history, science, places, and in-world rules. Remove stereotypes, demeaning descriptions, and jokes that rely on a protected trait. Make sure the player still has meaningful choices and that generated text does not force a moral or emotional response the design does not support. Test readability, subtitle length, text speed, and localization expansion; short English lines can become much longer in translation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRewrite and approve the final prose
Human writers should rewrite expressive language rather than merely accepting a probability-ranked draft. Google’s guidance says AI-generated content must be manually fact-checked for accuracy and trustworthiness. Keep the approved script, revision history, and the person responsible for continuity and tone.
Copyright status is a separate question from quality. The U.S. Copyright Office’s 29 January 2025 report says generative-AI output can be protected where a human author determines sufficient expressive elements, while the mere provision of prompts is not enough. Human selection, arrangement, and modification may contribute protectable expression, so preserve evidence of those contributions and obtain legal advice for a specific registration or dispute.

How do I evaluate an AI voice performance?
Evaluate a synthetic performance as an actor, recording, and implementation at once. The voice must be intelligible, emotionally appropriate, synchronized, consistent, and lawfully authorized for the exact use.
Listen for intelligibility and artifacts
Check pronunciation of names, invented words, numbers, accents, breaths, sibilance, clipping, robotic transitions, and glitches at sentence boundaries. Listen on headphones, television speakers, handheld speakers, and with the game’s final music and effects. Confirm loudness consistency between lines, scenes, and sessions so players are not forced to adjust volume repeatedly.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Match performance to animation and subtitles
Compare phoneme timing, pauses, emphasis, and emotional beats against facial animation, body motion, camera cuts, and subtitle timing. Test interruptions, skips, speed controls, and repeated lines. A technically clean file still fails if the emotional peak arrives after the character’s expression or if captions disappear before a player can read them.
Check continuity and coverage
Place all lines for a character in chronological order and listen for drifting age, accent, pitch, energy, or microphone character. Test unusual names, numbers, code words, and every localization or alternate take the game needs. Document the model and version, processing chain, script, edits, and approval so a future patch can reproduce the intended voice.
Confirm performer consent and likeness boundaries
For a voice based on an identifiable performer, obtain explicit consent for synthesis and document intended uses, duration, territory, edits, and reuse. Do not assume that permission for a conventional recording covers model training, generated lines, sequels, marketing, or localization. If the performance could reasonably be mistaken for a human actor, route it through the disclosure decision and make the explanation accessible to players.
What is the difference between human-made, AI-assisted, and fully synthetic assets?
These options differ less by label than by where expressive decisions, permissions, and review effort reside. Compare them against the same production risks before selecting a workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Review dimension | Human-made asset | AI-assisted asset | Fully synthetic asset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expressive quality | Directly controlled by the human creator | Human direction combined with generated material and edits | Must be shaped and selected through human review |
| Consistency across a set | Managed through the team’s style or performance process | Requires batch checks and corrective editing | Requires especially close checks for recurring artifacts and drift |
| Editability | Usually follows the creator’s source workflow | Depends on whether generated parts remain separable and editable | May be difficult when a local change triggers unrelated regeneration |
| Provenance and permission confidence | Track contributors, references, and licenses | Track human sources plus the generation system and version | Track system, version, prompts or scripts, source references, permissions, and edits |
| Player-trust burden | Explain conventional credits and licenses | Assess whether AI materially changed the result or could mislead | Assess platform labels and clear player-facing disclosure |
| Additional voice checks | Performance release and recording rights | Consent scope for any synthetic assistance or likeness | Consent, likeness risk, pronunciation coverage, and reuse limits |
| Additional writing checks | Continuity and editorial review | Fact-checking, branch continuity, and rewrite time | All of those checks plus stronger authorship and provenance documentation |
Use the option that meets the game’s expressive and technical requirements with a review burden the team can sustain. A lower generation cost does not reduce the cost of checking, revising, integrating, documenting, and supporting the asset after launch.
How should an indie team document provenance and approvals?
Create one provenance packet per shipped asset or clearly defined batch. Keep it with the source files and update it when the asset changes.
- Identify the asset. Record a stable ID, character or location, scene or screen, language, file version, and intended use.
- Record sources and permissions. List reference images, scripts, recordings, contributors, licenses, releases, and any identifiable person or likeness involved.
- Record generation details. Save the tool or system name, model and version, date, prompts or scripts, settings that affect the result, and any input material.
- Record human changes. Preserve sketches, rewrites, edits, compositing, retakes, cleanup, timing changes, localization work, and the person who made each material change.
- Run the contextual review. Note build number, hardware or playback setup, language, resolution or mix, tests performed, defects found, and fixes applied.
- Approve the release candidate. Name the reviewer, date the decision, record remaining limitations, and identify the exact file or commit approved.
- Set the disclosure status. Record the platform rule checked, the player-facing wording or label, where it appears, and who owns updates if the asset changes.
This packet answers practical questions during a patch, localization handoff, takedown request, rights inquiry, or platform review. It also prevents a team from having to reconstruct its process from memory months later.
When do I need to disclose AI use on a game store page?
Disclose when a platform requires it, when AI materially shaped the published content, or when omitting the information could reasonably mislead players about how an important asset was made. Match the prominence and wording to the impact: a minor production aid may need a different explanation from a synthetic protagonist voice or extensive generated dialogue.

Platform-specific examples
- itch.io: Use the platform’s AI Disclosure field for generative-AI materials and tag covered asset pages accurately. Its guidance warns that failure to tag can result in delisting.
- Roblox: Generative-AI interactions require moderation and visible notices that an interaction is AI. Extended AI interactions also require relevant content-maturity disclosure.
- Other storefronts and consoles: Check the current submission form, content rules, and metadata fields for the edition and region you are shipping. Store the result of that check in the provenance packet.
Choose a useful player-facing explanation
Say what was generated or synthesized, where it appears, and what human review or editing was applied. For a voice, explain that a performer consented if that is true, without implying that a human recorded lines that were synthesized. For art or writing, identify the affected categories rather than hiding behind a vague statement that AI was used somewhere in development. Put the notice where players will see it, such as the store metadata or credits, and make it readable with assistive technology.
The U.S. Copyright Office’s 16 March 2023 initiative states that applicants must disclose AI-generated content in registration submissions. That registration obligation is distinct from a storefront label, so track both decisions separately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the most common failure modes, and how do I fix them?
A single spectacular sample hides batch drift
Symptom: Marketing images look coherent, but ordinary assets repeat faces, props, lighting, or textures.
Fix: Review a representative batch in one board, define style anchors, replace near-duplicates, and reject the workflow if consistency cannot be maintained without excessive cleanup.
Recommended Free Tools
The asset works in a tool preview but fails in the build
Symptom: Text is unreadable, dialogue overlaps animation, or audio is masked by effects.
Fix: Test at final resolution, frame rate, mix, subtitle settings, localization length, and hardware. Make the contextual build review a release gate rather than a post-launch task.
A local edit causes collateral changes
Symptom: Fixing one hand, word, or pronunciation changes unrelated details.
Fix: Prefer layered or separable source material, keep human edits outside the generation step where possible, and version every approved replacement. If the tool cannot support controlled edits, budget for a human remake.

A synthetic voice sounds acceptable but lacks consent coverage
Symptom: The team has a sample or contract for a recording but no permission for generated speech, reuse, territory, or duration.
Fix: Stop integration until consent covers the actual synthesis and distribution plan. Replace the voice if the performer or rights holder will not authorize those terms.
The team cannot explain the asset’s origin
Symptom: Prompts, model version, references, or edits are missing.
Fix: Reconstruct what can be verified, mark the uncertainty, and obtain fresh source material or remake the asset when rights and provenance cannot be established. Do not present an undocumented output as low-risk merely because no complaint has arrived.
What should be in the final ship checklist?
- The asset has a documented gameplay or narrative purpose and matches art direction, rating, tone, and accessibility goals.
- A representative batch and complete scenes were tested in the shipped context.
- Art was checked for anatomy, perspective, lighting, shadows, text, silhouettes, readability, editability, and repeated artifacts.
- Writing was checked for character goals, voice, continuity, pacing, branching, interruption, factual accuracy, stereotypes, agency, and localization length.
- Voice was checked for intelligibility, pronunciation, emotion, timing, captions, loudness, artifacts, continuity, and coverage of unusual words.
- Sources, licenses, permissions, consent, system and model version, prompts or scripts, edits, and final files are recorded.
- A named human approved the final expressive choices.
- Platform disclosure fields, credits, store copy, and registration disclosures have been reviewed for the target release.
- Players can access any required notice and understand which content was generated or synthesized.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI-generated image be copyrighted in the United States?
The U.S. Copyright Office’s 29 January 2025 report says protection depends on human authorship of sufficient expressive elements; prompts alone do not supply that authorship. Human selection, arrangement, or modification may matter, so preserve those contributions and seek advice for a specific registration.
Should I disclose AI use if it only helped with a draft?
Assess whether the tool materially shaped the shipped result and whether a reasonable player could be misled without context. Keep an internal record even when no storefront label is required, because platform rules and the final degree of AI contribution can change before release.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What evidence should I request from a voice provider?
Request written permission covering synthesis, intended uses, duration, territory, edits, reuse, and any identifiable likeness. Also obtain the model or processing version, script, delivery files, and restrictions needed to reproduce or retire the voice in later patches.
How should I test generated dialogue for accessibility?
Play scenes with captions, text-speed controls, skipped lines, interruptions, and localization expansion enabled. Check that subtitles remain synchronized and readable, that essential information is not conveyed only through audio, and that branches do not strand players who use accessibility settings.
What should I do when a platform’s AI policy changes after launch?
Keep the provenance packet and disclosure wording versioned so you can update metadata, credits, or notices without rebuilding the entire game. Recheck the policy for each affected storefront and document the date, edition, and region covered by the decision.
