To extract one edition from a Windows 10 multi-edition ISO, mount the ISO, locate install.wim or install.esd, use DISM to list its image indexes, inspect the index that matches your edition and build, and export that index to a separate image file. The ISO remains unchanged. If you need a new bootable ISO rather than a standalone WIM or ESD, you must rebuild the ISO in a separate step.
The important distinction is between an edition (such as Home, Pro, Education or N), a build/version, architecture and language. DISM exposes all of those attributes, so do not choose an index from its number alone.

What does “specific Windows version” mean in a multi-edition ISO?
A multi-edition ISO is a container that can hold several Windows images. Each image has an index, and each index can represent a different edition or architecture. The index number is only an identifier; the metadata attached to it is what tells you whether it is the image you need.

Windows Setup may present several editions from one ISO, but extracting an index gives you a separate image file that contains only that selected edition.

What do I need before extracting an image?
You can perform the extraction with tools already included in Windows. Prepare the following before opening an elevated command window:
- A Windows 10 ISO that contains the edition you want.
- An account that can open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Enough free space for the exported WIM or ESD and any temporary servicing data.
- A destination folder such as
C:Images; create it first if it does not exist. - The correct architecture and language requirement for the target computer.
- The target computer’s currently licensed Windows edition, which you can check under Settings > System > About.
A USB flash drive is optional during extraction. It becomes useful later if you intend to store the exported image or create Windows installation media.
How do I mount the Windows 10 ISO and find the image file?
Mount the ISO in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer and browse to the ISO.
- Double-click the ISO. Windows mounts it as a virtual DVD drive and assigns a drive letter.
- Open the new drive, then open its
Sourcesfolder. - Look for
install.wimorinstall.esd.
In multi-architecture media, the image may be inside architecture-specific folders such as x86sources or x64sources. Use the file that belongs to the architecture you intend to extract. Note the mounted drive letter; the examples below use F: only as a placeholder.
Open an elevated command prompt
Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. DISM commands that read or export installation images should be run from this elevated window.
How do I list every edition in the ISO?
Run DISM’s image-information command against the file you found in Sources:
DISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:"F:sourcesinstall.wim"If the media uses ESD, change the filename:
DISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:"F:sourcesinstall.esd"The result lists each image’s Index and Name. Record the index whose name matches the requested edition. Do not assume that Pro is always index 6 or that indexes are identical between different ISO releases; the index order is a property of that particular file.

How do I verify the selected index before exporting it?
Inspect one index at a time with the /index option. The following uses index 6 as an example; replace it with the index you recorded:
DISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:"F:sourcesinstall.wim" /index:6Read the displayed Version, ServicePack Build, Architecture, Edition and Languages. This check catches common mistakes such as selecting an N edition, choosing x86 instead of x64, or using media with a different build than the deployment plan.
Microsoft also documents the indexed form of the command as:
DISM /Get-ImageInfo /ImageFile:install.wim /Index:1Use an index or a name when you need the Edition ID. Without a name or index, DISM does not include the Edition ID in its output. If the metadata does not match your requirement, return to the listing command and inspect another index rather than exporting the first result.
How do I export one edition to a standalone WIM?
After verifying the index, export it to a new destination file:
DISM /Export-Image /SourceImageFile:"F:sourcesinstall.wim" /SourceIndex:6 /DestinationImageFile:"C:ImagesWindows10-Pro.wim"- Replace
F:sourcesinstall.wimwith the mounted file’s actual path. - Replace
6with the verified source index. - Replace
C:ImagesWindows10-Pro.wimwith a destination on a drive that has enough free space. - Wait for DISM to finish and report completion before closing the window.
The destination is a standalone WIM containing the selected image. The original ISO and its source WIM are not rewritten by this export operation. To confirm the result, run the information command against the new file:

What should I do when the ISO contains install.esd?
ESD media supports the same index-enumeration and export workflow. First list the indexes against install.esd, inspect the selected index, then export from that ESD using its actual index.
If a WIM is required for your deployment process, export directly to a WIM and request maximum compression with integrity checking:
DISM /Export-Image /SourceImageFile:"F:sourcesinstall.esd" /SourceIndex:1 /DestinationImageFile:"C:Imagesinstall.wim" /Compress:max /CheckIntegrityReplace 1 with the index you identified. ESD is a more heavily compressed format, while WIM is commonly used for servicing. The compression choice affects processing time and file size, so allow additional time when using /Compress:max.

How do I handle install.swm split-image media?
Some installation media splits an image into files such as install.swm and additional numbered parts. Dell identifies WIM, SWM and ESD as possible Install.* files, and the DISM output’s Version value remains useful when identifying the media.
Do not blindly substitute install.swm into a WIM command. Split-image syntax depends on the DISM context and the installed tool version. Open the local DISM help and confirm the exact syntax for listing and exporting split images before proceeding. If the command does not recognize the split set, keep every numbered part together in the same directory and verify that you are pointing to the first file in the set.
How do I turn the exported image into a bootable ISO?
/Export-Image creates an image file, not a bootable ISO. If your goal is a new ISO, you need a separate ISO-building utility or workflow that preserves the Windows boot files and places the exported image in the rebuilt media’s Sources folder.

Before rebuilding, verify the exported image with DISM and retain the original ISO as a recovery copy. A rebuilt ISO must contain the correct boot structure as well as the image file; simply renaming a WIM or copying it to a disc image does not make bootable installation media. After the ISO is created, mount it again and confirm that the expected Sources file is present before writing it to a USB flash drive or DVD.

For repeatable work, DISM’s explicit source path, index and destination make the operation easy to document and automate. A graphical exporter can be more approachable when you need to inspect images visually, but it does not remove the need to verify edition, architecture, language and build.

Microsoft Support states that the edition being reinstalled must match the device’s digital license. Before deployment, open Settings > System > About on the target device and note the installed edition. Select the extracted image that matches it; extracting a different edition does not provide a legitimate way around activation requirements.
This check is separate from technical compatibility. An image can have the correct architecture and language yet still be the wrong licensed edition. If several devices have different licenses, repeat the metadata check for each deployment group and export separate indexes when necessary.
What problems occur during extraction, and how can I fix them?
DISM says the file cannot be found
Check the mounted drive letter and the exact filename. Confirm that the image is under Sources, or under the correct x86sources or x64sources folder, then quote the complete path in the command.

Run the information command with /index: or a name. DISM does not print Edition ID when neither an index nor a name is specified.
The selected edition is wrong
Run /Get-WimInfo again and compare the Name, Edition, Version, Architecture and Languages fields. ISO releases can use different index orders, so never reuse an index from another file without checking it.

Export fails partway through
Confirm that the destination drive has sufficient free space and that the destination folder exists. If the source is ESD, retry with the actual ESD path and source index; for integrity-sensitive work, include /CheckIntegrity.
The exported file will not boot
An exported WIM or ESD is not itself bootable media. Use an ISO-building process that retains the original boot files and places the image in the rebuilt ISO’s Sources directory.

Keep all split parts together, identify the first file correctly, and consult the DISM help installed on that Windows system for the split-image command syntax. Do not assume the single-file WIM command applies unchanged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I extract more than one edition from the same ISO?
Yes. Run the listing command once, inspect each desired index, and export each one to a different destination filename. Keep the metadata record for every file so an installer or deployment script can select the correct edition later.
Does exporting an index change the original ISO?
No. DISM reads the mounted source image and writes a new destination image. Keep the ISO mounted or preserve a copy if you expect to perform additional exports.
Can I use an exported WIM with automated deployment tools?
Usually, but the deployment environment must support the image format and architecture you exported. Validate the WIM with DISM first, then test it in the same setup or deployment workflow that will be used on production devices.
Why do two Windows 10 ISOs show different index numbers for the same edition?
Index order is stored in each image file and can vary by release, language, architecture or media construction. Always identify the edition by the displayed name and metadata instead of relying on a remembered index.
