Extract as soon as your run has achieved its purpose. In DMZ, loot only becomes part of your future inventory after a successful exfil. Set an exit condition before opening containers, keep enough backpack space and combat resources for the trip out, and treat every extra room as a risk-versus-reward decision.
The exact mechanics depend on the release. The 2022 Warzone 2.0 tactical overview describes the original single-life DMZ rules, while current 2026 pages describe Modern Warfare 4 DMZ with a Forward Operating Base (FOB), Stash, 3D Printer and Secure backpack slots. Use the section that matches the version you are playing.

What happens to loot in DMZ?
DMZ is an extraction mode: you enter with an objective, search the map for equipment and valuables, then leave through an exfil point. The reward is not credited merely because you picked an item up. It persists only after you complete extraction.
The official Call of Duty tactical overview (2022) defines DMZ as a single-life mode and states: “DMZ is a single-life game mode in which dying results in the loss of all nonpermanent items in your Backpack.” That includes gear and resources you collected during the deployment. A successful exfil carries eligible items into your future deployments; a death ends the run and can remove the contents that were not protected or permanent.

This rule changes how you should value a container. A rare component already in your pack is worth more than an unsearched room because it is at risk. Once you have the item that justified the deployment, the safest profitable action is usually to leave.
Set a success condition before you loot
Choose the result that makes the deployment successful before you enter a building. Your condition might be a mission item, a rare ingredient, a weapon, a cash amount or completion of a specific objective. Write it mentally as a yes-or-no test: “If I have this item, I leave.”
Use an exit threshold
An exit threshold prevents the common mistake of converting a completed run into an unnecessary fight. When the threshold is met, check the time, armor, ammunition and distance to an exfil. If any of those are deteriorating, stop searching and begin the return route.

Choose a run type that matches the objective

Do not select a deep run simply because the map still has unopened buildings. Compare the value of another search with the cost of losing everything already secured, the time needed to reach extraction and the likelihood of PvE or PvP contact on the way.
Manage the backpack so valuable items can come home
Know the available capacity
The 2026 Call of Duty Staff guide lists the Basic Pack as having eight available slots. Upgraded backpacks add item slots, and some versions add Secure slots that protect a selected item when an exfil fails. Capacity is not a minor convenience: a full pack can prevent you from picking up the mission item you came for.

Triage every pickup
When space is limited, use this order:
- Mission or progression item: keep an item that is difficult or expensive to replace and is tied to a current objective.
- Crafting, upgrade or recipe requirement: retain a component you know you will use rather than filling the slot with an unknown low-value pickup.
- Rare weapon or gear: keep equipment that materially improves your next deployment and that you can realistically carry out.
- Cash or sale valuables: take these when they serve a stated objective or fund a planned upgrade.
- Filler: keep low-priority items only after the categories above are covered.
Before opening another container, look at the pack rather than relying on a pickup prompt. Discarding a low-value item first is faster and safer than discovering at the exfil that the needed component never fit.
Understand Resources and 3D Printer Ingredients
The current FOB guide distinguishes automatically broken-down Resources from intact 3D Printer Ingredients. Ingredients remain as items in the Backpack during the deployment. After a successful exfil, move them into the Stash, where they can support crafting and FOB upgrades. If an ingredient is needed for a known recipe, treat it as a mission item during triage instead of as disposable clutter.

Plan the exfil before opening the first container
Use a marked exfil while it is practical
DMZ displays marked extraction locations. You call an extraction helicopter at one of these points, then survive the process long enough to leave. A marked point is a destination, not a guarantee of safety: hostile forces and rival Operators can contest the approach or the helicopter itself.
At deployment start, identify the nearest practical exfil and at least one alternative. “Nearest” means the point you can reach with your current route, ammunition and remaining time, not necessarily the one with the shortest straight-line distance. Buildings, vertical terrain, enemy concentrations and a contested area can make a farther point safer.
Respect the final exfil
When ordinary marked exfils are gone, the final exfil is the last escape opportunity. Do not assume another standard point will appear after you pass one. If your threshold is met and the final route is still available, start moving early enough to arrive with time for contact, repositioning and the helicopter sequence.

Carry resources for the trip out
- Keep enough armor to survive an unexpected engagement rather than spending every plate while looting.
- Reserve ammunition for the approach and extraction; a full backpack is useless if you cannot defend it.
- Leave time for doors, vertical movement, revives and a route change if another squad occupies the direct path.
- When the route becomes exposed, rotate to a different marked point while ordinary exfils remain available.
Use a Secure slot for the item you cannot replace
Current 2026 DMZ guidance describes upgraded backpacks with Secure slots. A Secure slot insures a protected item if you fail to exfil. The slot is most valuable when used on the hardest-to-replace mission item, rare ingredient or other irreplaceable piece already in your possession.

A Secure slot reduces the consequence of one failure; it does not protect the rest of the backpack, prevent a firefight or create another exfil. Once the key item is safe and the exit threshold is met, leave with the remaining contents treated as expendable risk.
A step-by-step extraction routine
- Define the objective. Decide whether the deployment is for a mission item, a recipe ingredient, a weapon, cash or an objective chain. Set the exact condition that ends the looting phase.
- Mark an initial exfil and fallback. Identify the closest practical marked point and another route that remains reachable if the first becomes contested.
- Enter with a readable pack. Remove unnecessary items before deployment and leave enough room for the objective. The Basic Pack has eight available slots in the 2026 guide.
- Search selectively. Prioritize containers and locations that can produce the objective. Do not clear every room merely because it is nearby.
- Reassess after each high-value pickup. Check remaining slots, armor, ammunition, health, time and distance to the chosen exfil. If the success condition is now satisfied, switch from looting to movement.
- Secure the irreplaceable item. If your backpack has a Secure slot, place the item hardest to replace there as soon as the game allows it. Keep the item in the slot; do not swap it for a less important pickup.
- Consolidate the pack. Discard low-priority filler, keep mission and crafting items together and leave at least enough capacity for an unexpected objective pickup.
- Approach from a defensible direction. Avoid crossing open ground when a covered route exists. Listen for hostile forces and rival Operators before committing to the helicopter area.
- Call the extraction and hold the area. Start the helicopter sequence only when you have enough armor, ammunition and time to survive contact. If the point is compromised, disengage and use the fallback while it remains available.
- Confirm the successful exfil. Do not redeploy immediately. Verify that the deployment ended successfully, then move intended keepers into the Stash before starting another run.
Manage the PvPvE risk at extraction
Extraction is a PvPvE problem, not a menu action. Hostile forces can pressure the approach, while rival Operators may watch a marked point because they know other players must use it. The most valuable backpack therefore increases the importance of a quiet route and a timely departure.
When the route is contested
- Early contact: break line of sight, reposition and choose the fallback exfil instead of forcing a fight with a full backpack.
- Low resources: stop looting immediately. Armor and ammunition needed for the escape are worth more than another container.
- Open approach: use cover, vary your timing and avoid standing in a predictable extraction position before the helicopter is ready.
- Squad separation: regroup before calling the helicopter when possible. A lone player carrying the mission item is an easy target and may not be able to complete the sequence.
The correct response is not always combat. If another squad controls the area and ordinary exfils remain, preserving the haul through a route change is usually better than exchanging the whole backpack for a low-probability win.
When should you stop looting?
Stop when the expected value of another container is lower than the risk of losing what you already carry. Use four checks:

- Objective check: Is the mission, recipe or progression requirement already satisfied?
- Exit check: Can you reach a marked exfil or the final exfil with time for an interruption and a route change?
- Resource check: Do you still have enough armor, ammunition and mobility to survive the approach?
- Risk check: Are rival Operators, hostile forces, gas or a shrinking time window making the next room unusually dangerous?
If the objective check is yes and any two of the other checks are deteriorating, leave. A successful haul is a completed extraction, not the maximum number of containers opened.

The official FOB guide advises: “Every time you extract, make sure to offload items you’ll need in future deployments.” Follow that instruction before redeploying.
Move intended keepers to the Stash
Place ingredients, weapons and other items you plan to retain into the Stash. This separates the recovered haul from the next deployment’s temporary backpack and makes the items available for crafting, FOB upgrades or a later loadout.
Sort before the next deployment
- Identify which ingredients support a known craft or upgrade.
- Separate rare equipment from expendable gear.
- Check that mission items are still available before starting a new objective run.
- Decide which item, if any, will occupy a Secure slot on the next deployment.
Offloading is part of extraction discipline. Leaving items in a temporary backpack or redeploying without checking the Stash can create avoidable confusion about what actually survived the run.

What happens if you die?
Under the original 2022 rules, death removes all nonpermanent items in the Backpack. That means the objective item, cash, weapons and resources you had not protected are no longer available from that deployment. Current versions add persistent progression systems and Secure slots, so the exact inventory result can differ by release and patch; the safe assumption is that anything outside permanent or explicitly protected storage is at risk.

There is no reliable recovery strategy after an ordinary death that restores an unprotected backpack. Treat the next deployment as a new plan: rebuild only what the current version preserves, select a smaller objective if necessary and avoid repeating the same route without changing the cause of failure.

Check the in-game menus and the current official guide for your release before relying on a capacity, storage or protection rule. Mechanics can change between updates, and a strategy built for Al Mazrah may not map exactly onto the current DMZ environment.
Practical examples
Example: one rare ingredient
You enter for a rare 3D Printer Ingredient and find it before using half your armor. The item satisfies the objective, your pack has room and a marked exfil is nearby. Stop searching, place the ingredient in a Secure slot if available, and take the covered route to extraction. Opening additional containers adds possible sale value but puts the guaranteed objective at risk.
Example: a full pack with a mission item still missing
Your backpack is full of cash and low-value valuables, but the mission item has not appeared. Replace the filler with space for the objective, then search only locations that can produce it. If time or ammunition no longer supports the return trip, abandon the search and extract with the best remaining value rather than dying while chasing a low-probability pickup.
Example: a contested marked exfil
You have the required weapon, but another squad controls the nearest helicopter point. If a fallback marked exfil remains reachable, rotate immediately and preserve time for the new approach. If the final exfil is approaching, choose the route that gives you the greatest chance of arrival with armor and ammunition instead of waiting for the contested squad to leave.
The rule to remember
DMZ rewards completed extractions, not maximum time spent looting. Define the item or objective that makes the run worthwhile, keep the backpack organized around it, protect one irreplaceable item when the version allows, and leave while you still have the time and resources to survive the route. After the helicopter departs, offload the recovered items into persistent storage before risking them again.
