To factory reset an ASUS ROG Ally from BIOS, use ASUS Cloud Recovery—not Load Optimized Defaults. Cloud Recovery erases the storage device containing Windows and reinstalls the ASUS factory operating-system and driver image. The process requires power, a reliable internet connection, and can take approximately one to three hours.
Back up your files and save your BitLocker recovery key before starting. This guide reflects ASUS guidance current as of August 18, 2026.

Before you begin
ASUS Cloud Recovery is destructive. It erases the drive containing the operating system, including Windows applications, games, personal files, and partitions on that drive. It does not mean that every separately connected storage device is automatically erased, but you should still disconnect unnecessary external drives and verify your backups.
- Back up documents, screenshots, recordings, save files, browser data, and anything else you need.
- Synchronize or export game saves where applicable.
- If you are selling the Ally, sign out of Microsoft, Steam, Xbox, Epic, and other accounts.
- Save your BitLocker recovery key before recovery.
- Connect the original charger or a suitable power supply.
- Prepare reliable Wi-Fi. Cloud Recovery must download the recovery image.
- Do not power off the Ally once the recovery process begins.
On systems with multiple internal storage devices or unusual partitions, take extra care. ASUS recommends using MyASUS in WinRE rather than UEFI Cloud Recovery for configurations with two or more storage devices, so only the Windows-containing drive is erased. A replacement internal SSD can also be restored through Cloud Recovery if the Ally supports the feature.

ASUS documents the recovery process as taking about one to three hours. The Ally may restart several times or display a black screen temporarily.
How to factory reset the ROG Ally from BIOS
- Shut down the Ally completely.
- Press the Power button and immediately hold or repeatedly press Volume Down (-). Continue until the BIOS/UEFI screen appears. This method is especially useful when Windows will not boot. ASUS also documents a Windows route through Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → UEFI Firmware Settings, although labels can vary between Windows builds.
- Press F7 to switch BIOS to Advanced Mode.
- Open Advanced → ASUS Cloud Recovery.
- Follow the on-screen confirmation, policy, or age-verification prompts if they appear. Some BIOS versions show a button prompt such as the Ally’s Y button; use the control displayed on your screen.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and allow the recovery service to identify the device.
- Review the warning that the operating-system storage device will be erased, then confirm the download and reset.
- Leave the Ally connected to power and the network. Do not interrupt it during downloading, installation, restarts, or temporary black screens.
ASUS’s documented UEFI path is F7 → Advanced → ASUS Cloud Recovery. See the ASUS Cloud Recovery instructions if your BIOS labels differ.
What happens after you confirm
Cloud Recovery downloads an ASUS recovery image, erases the Windows storage device, and restores Windows, ASUS drivers, and the factory software image. When it finishes, the Ally should start Windows’ out-of-box setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesComplete the region, keyboard, network, Microsoft account, privacy, and other setup screens. Then:
- Run Windows Update repeatedly until no important updates remain.
- Install available ASUS and ROG updates and utilities.
- Reinstall Armoury Crate, games, launchers, and other applications as needed.
- Confirm that BitLocker and other security settings are configured as you want.
- If you reset the Ally for sale, avoid signing back into personal accounts.
Do not assume Cloud Recovery always installs the newest Windows and drivers. ASUS says the service may provide the latest versions available during its service period; after that period, it may restore factory-default versions that require manual updates.

If ASUS Cloud Recovery is missing
Do not confuse an unavailable Cloud Recovery entry with a hidden generic BIOS reset. Load Optimized Defaults only restores firmware settings; it does not reinstall Windows, remove applications, or restore the ASUS factory image.
First check that the BIOS date and time are correct. Cloud Recovery availability can also depend on model support, BIOS version, device identification, network access, and ASUS service availability. If ASUS reports a network-related error, update the BIOS if possible and try again.

Option 1: Windows Reset this PC
If Windows still starts, use Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC and choose the option to remove everything. This is a Windows reset, not necessarily a complete ASUS factory-image restoration, so you may need to reinstall drivers and ASUS utilities afterward.
Option 2: MyASUS in WinRE
ASUS also supports Cloud Recovery through MyASUS in Windows Recovery Environment. The ROG Ally has no built-in keyboard, so this route may require a USB-C dongle and an external keyboard. ASUS lists Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, excluding Windows 11 S mode, among the requirements.
You may enter WinRE by holding Shift while selecting Restart from Windows. ASUS also documents repeatedly pressing F12 after power-on, although some models use F9. See the MyASUS in WinRE recovery requirements before starting.

Option 3: ASUS service
Contact an authorized ASUS service center if important files are not backed up, the Ally cannot connect to a supported network, BIOS cannot identify the device, recovery repeatedly fails, or hardware failure is suspected. Do not keep retrying a destructive process when the files you need have not been saved.
Network problems during Cloud Recovery
Try another access point or a phone hotspot if the download fails. ASUS documents a possible compatibility problem where a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E adapter may have trouble connecting through a Wi-Fi 7 router. A suitable USB-C Ethernet adapter may work, but ASUS warns that non-ASUS RJ45-to-USB adapters are not supported in every situation.
Keep the Ally on external power while changing networks or retrying. If another network does not resolve the error, update the BIOS when possible and contact ASUS support.
If the Ally returns to BIOS after recovery
If the Ally automatically opens BIOS after Cloud Recovery, ASUS recommends a USB-based MyASUS in WinRE recovery procedure:
- Use another computer to create MyASUS in WinRE for USB.
- In BIOS, open Security → Secure Boot and temporarily disable Secure Boot.
- Run Cloud Recovery through the USB-based MyASUS in WinRE tool.
- Boot Windows and install Windows updates.
- Back up or retrieve the BitLocker recovery key.
- Return to BIOS and re-enable Secure Boot.
Disabling Secure Boot is a temporary troubleshooting step, not a recommended permanent configuration. If the Ally still returns to BIOS, ASUS recommends authorized service.
