There is no single Windows 11 setting that dramatically increases gaming performance on every PC. The reliable approach is to measure your system first, update the software stack, select the correct GPU, configure refresh rate and VRR correctly, reduce unnecessary background activity, and test advanced options one at a time.
This guide separates improvements to average FPS, 1% lows, input latency, loading times, image quality, thermals, and battery life. It also explains which popular tweaks are conditional experiments—and which are best avoided.

What Windows 11 optimization can—and cannot—do
Average FPS is usually determined by the game, GPU, CPU, resolution, graphics settings, and thermal limits. Windows settings can help prevent interference, correct a game launching on the wrong GPU, improve frame pacing, or configure the display properly, but they cannot turn a low-end GPU into a high-end one.
- Average FPS: Mostly affected by the GPU, CPU, resolution, and in-game settings.
- 1% lows and stutter: Often affected by background workloads, shader compilation, drivers, overlays, RAM or VRAM pressure, and storage behavior.
- Input latency: Influenced by frame rate, refresh rate, VRR, V-Sync, frame generation, and game features such as NVIDIA Reflex or AMD Anti-Lag.
- Loading times: Primarily affected by storage, decompression, shader compilation, engine initialization, and online services.
- Image quality: Affected by HDR, Auto HDR, upscaling, frame generation, and display calibration.
- Battery life and heat: Usually trade directly against maximum laptop performance.
Use the safest changes first. Keep a record of every change and revert anything that does not produce a repeatable improvement.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
1. Establish a baseline before changing settings
Choose one repeatable scene, replay, or built-in benchmark. Run it at least twice after a reboot, using the same resolution, graphics preset, frame cap, and display mode.
Record:
- Average FPS and 1% low FPS.
- Frame-time graph and visible hitching.
- GPU utilization, clock speed, temperature, and power behavior.
- CPU utilization, per-core load, clock speed, and temperature.
- RAM and VRAM usage.
- Input latency, if the game or measurement tool supports it.
- Loading time, when storage performance is relevant.
HWiNFO is useful for sensors and clocks. CapFrameX and PresentMon can help analyze frame times. A game’s built-in benchmark is preferable when available.
Useful Windows diagnostics include:
winver
dxdiag
msinfo32
powercfg /getactivescheme
Change one setting at a time. If a result is within normal run-to-run variation, keep the safer default rather than treating it as an optimization.
2. Apply the safe first-pass optimizations
Update Windows, drivers, firmware, and games
Install pending Windows updates, then update the GPU driver from the official vendor site:
Also check chipset drivers, laptop or motherboard support pages, BIOS/UEFI updates, monitor firmware, and game patches. Update BIOS only when there is a relevant stability, compatibility, security, or performance reason—and only when you have a recovery plan.
A newer GPU driver is not automatically better for every game. If a problem begins immediately after an update, test the previous known-good driver using the vendor’s rollback or clean-install options. Laptop owners should generally prefer the manufacturer’s driver when custom graphics switching, display behavior, hotkeys, or power profiles are involved.
Enable Game Mode
Open Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and enable it. Game Mode is intended to prioritize gaming-related behavior and reduce interference; it is not an overclock and does not guarantee a fixed FPS increase.
If a particular game develops unusual stutter or scheduling problems, test it with Game Mode disabled. Revert the setting from the same page.

- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: Unlike metal and silicon-based thermal conductive adhesives, BSFF thermal paste maintains consistent performance over time. Once applied correctly, it provides reliable thermal transfer for long-term use.
- EASY TO APPLY: Designed with an ideal consistency, the thermal paste spreads smoothly and evenly. The included toolkit helps with precise application, making it simple for both beginners and experienced users.
Select the correct GPU for each game
On a desktop, connect the monitor cable to the graphics card rather than the motherboard. On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics:
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Select Add desktop app and browse to the game’s executable if necessary.
- Select the game and choose Options.
- Choose High performance, then select Save.
Use Task Manager or an overlay to confirm that the discrete GPU is actually rendering the game. Windows’ preference does not replace a laptop manufacturer’s MUX switch or hybrid-graphics control, so also check the OEM performance application and the GPU vendor’s settings.
Set the monitor to its intended refresh rate
Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and select the monitor’s maximum supported refresh rate, if you want maximum motion clarity. A high-refresh monitor cannot make a game render more frames than the hardware can produce, but using a lower-than-necessary refresh rate can limit the display experience.
Use Best performance selectively
Open Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode and choose Best performance for demanding games when a laptop is plugged in. This may help sustain clocks, but it can increase heat, fan noise, power draw, and battery drain. If temperatures rise enough to cause thermal throttling, the more aggressive mode can actually reduce sustained performance.
On desktops, the difference between the default power mode and a high-performance plan is often small. Do not start with registry-based “Ultimate Performance” plans.
Reduce unnecessary startup and background activity
Review Settings → Apps → Startup or Task Manager → Startup apps. Disable only applications you recognize and do not need at login, such as unused launchers, cloud-sync tools during gaming sessions, auto-updaters, or unneeded RGB utilities.
Disable one item, reboot, test, and restore it if a required function breaks. This cleanup is more likely to improve boot time, background CPU/RAM use, notifications, or conflicts than to produce a large direct FPS increase. Do not delete Windows services, scheduled tasks, or unknown processes.

Microsoft says this feature can move compatible games to a newer flip presentation model, reducing frame latency and enabling features such as Auto HDR and VRR on supported systems. It is not universally better than exclusive fullscreen. Disable it for the affected game if you see flicker, stutter, incorrect HDR, capture problems, or overlay issues. See Microsoft’s Windows graphics documentation.
Configure variable refresh rate
VRR can reduce tearing and make uneven frame rates look smoother, but every part of the chain must be configured:
- Enable Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC in the monitor menu and relevant GPU control panel.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings and enable Variable refresh rate when the option is available.
- Confirm the intended refresh rate under Advanced display.
- Enable VRR in the game when it provides a native option.
- Use one coherent frame-pacing strategy rather than stacking several unrelated limiters.
A frame cap slightly below the display’s maximum refresh rate can help keep rendering inside the VRR range. V-Sync, VRR, frame generation, and driver-level caps interact differently between games and vendors, so test the complete combination rather than assuming one universal rule. Microsoft explains the Windows VRR controls in its Graphics settings documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTest Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
On systems that expose the option, go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings → Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
HAGS moves much of GPU scheduling from the CPU to dedicated GPU hardware, but that architectural change does not guarantee higher FPS or lower latency. Treat it as a controlled test: change it, restart Windows, repeat the same benchmark, and compare frame-time behavior. Keep it enabled only if the system is stable and results are equal or better. Disable it if it causes crashes, stutter, capture problems, frame-generation incompatibility, or driver instability. The option appears only when compatible hardware and drivers expose it. Microsoft describes the feature at DirectX.
Configure HDR and Auto HDR carefully
For an HDR-capable display, open Settings → System → Display → HDR, select the correct display, enable Use HDR, and run Windows HDR calibration if available.
Test the game’s native HDR first. Use Auto HDR for compatible SDR games when native HDR is unavailable or produces a worse result. Auto HDR is not equivalent to native HDR authored by the developer; results depend on the monitor’s brightness, local dimming, tone mapping, and calibration. Disable Auto HDR for an individual title if colors look wrong, menus are washed out, or behavior changes unexpectedly.

4. Laptop-specific optimization
- Benchmark only while connected to AC power when measuring maximum performance.
- Select the manufacturer’s performance mode, but monitor temperatures and sustained clock speeds.
- Check whether the laptop has a MUX switch or hybrid-graphics mode.
- When using an external display, check whether its port is wired directly to the discrete GPU.
- Compare battery-mode and AC-mode results separately.
- Use a cooling pad only when measurements show thermal throttling; it cannot fix an underpowered CPU or GPU.
A laptop that briefly reaches high clocks but then drops frequency because of heat may perform better with a balanced thermal profile, a frame cap, or lower power targets.
5. Storage, memory, and hardware configuration
Install Windows and frequently played games on an SSD and leave free space for updates, shader caches, and temporary files. NVMe storage can improve loading in supported workloads, but moving a game from SATA SSD to NVMe does not normally increase FPS.
DirectStorage only helps games that implement it and meet the relevant requirements. Microsoft describes the high-level combination as an NVMe SSD, DirectX 12 GPU, and a compatible game; loading can still be limited by decompression, CPU work, engine initialization, or online services. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 DirectStorage announcement.

Memory Integrity and VBS
Open Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation → Memory integrity. Keep Memory Integrity enabled by default. It is a virtualization-based security feature that isolates kernel-mode code integrity, and Windows 11 may enable it by default on compatible clean installations.
Disable it only as a controlled troubleshooting test when a specific driver or application is incompatible or a measured performance issue is reproducible. Restart after changing it, record the original state, and understand that disabling it reduces protection. After testing:
- Return to Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation.
- Re-enable Memory integrity.
- Restart Windows.
- Update or remove any incompatible driver instead of leaving the security feature disabled.
Microsoft’s documentation covers Memory Integrity enablement and VBS configuration. Do not promise a universal 5–10% FPS gain from disabling security features.
Overlays, recording, and capture
Test overlays individually rather than disabling everything automatically. Possible sources include Xbox Game Bar, Discord, Steam, NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, streaming software, and capture tools.
Best Value
- NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
- LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
- PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
- SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
- EFFORTLESS CLEANING WITH MX CLEANER: Removes old thermal paste thoroughly, preparing contact surfaces for optimal performance. Also available as a convenient bundle with MX-7
Overlays can contribute to anti-cheat conflicts, alt-tab crashes, HDR flicker, frame-time spikes, input-latency changes, or competition for encoder and GPU resources. Disable only the overlay associated with a reproducible problem, and preserve monitoring or capture features you actually need.
Automatic Super Resolution
Auto SR is not a general Windows 11 recommendation. Its availability depends on supported hardware, games, display mode, and current Windows feature support. Where available, its workflow is under Settings → System → Display → Graphics. Microsoft notes that Auto SR currently does not support HDR content. Do not confuse it with DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or a game’s native upscaler, which generally offers broader control and compatibility. See Microsoft’s Auto SR documentation.
7. Troubleshoot by symptom
Low average FPS
Check whether the GPU is near full utilization. If it is GPU-bound, lower resolution, ray tracing, shadows, effects, or texture-heavy settings. If the GPU is underused while one or more CPU cores are saturated, reduce simulation, view distance, crowd density, and other CPU-heavy settings. Check temperatures, clocks, power limits, and whether the game selected the discrete GPU.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Stutter or poor 1% lows
Check shader compilation, RAM and VRAM pressure, background processes, overlays, driver history, and storage activity. Test windowed-game optimization and HAGS one at a time. If the issue began after a driver update, test the previous known-good driver. DX12 games can stutter during shader compilation even when Windows is configured correctly.
The game launches on the wrong GPU
Add its executable under Settings → System → Display → Graphics, choose High performance, restart the game, and confirm GPU use with Task Manager or an overlay. Then check the laptop’s OEM graphics mode, MUX switch, and external-display wiring.
HDR looks washed out
Confirm that Windows HDR is enabled for the correct display, run HDR calibration, and compare native HDR with Auto HDR. Disable Auto HDR for that title if its menus or colors look incorrect. Monitor quality and game implementation matter as much as the Windows switch.
The laptop is hot or drains quickly
Use Balanced mode, cap FPS, reduce refresh rate when appropriate, and select the OEM thermal profile. Check whether clocks are dropping because of thermal throttling. Best performance mode is not automatically faster if the resulting heat causes sustained throttling.

What not to do
- Do not run registry cleaners or registry “gaming” tweaks.
- Do not delete Windows services, Defender, Edge, Xbox components, or telemetry components as a blanket optimization.
- Do not use custom debloat scripts before establishing a baseline.
- Do not set every game to High priority in Task Manager.
- Do not globally disable fullscreen optimizations without a game-specific reason.
- Do not download drivers from third-party aggregators.
- Do not disable Memory Integrity permanently for an unverified FPS claim.
- Do not use one-click “FPS booster” or optimizer utilities as a substitute for diagnosis.
If Windows itself appears damaged, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow are repair commands—not routine gaming tweaks. Use them when there is evidence of system-file corruption.
A safe optimization sequence
- Reboot and record a repeatable baseline.
- Install Windows, GPU, chipset, OEM, and game updates.
- Set the monitor to its intended refresh rate.
- Enable Game Mode.
- Add each demanding game under Graphics settings and select High performance on hybrid systems.
- Configure VRR in Windows, the monitor, and the GPU control panel.
- Test windowed-game optimization for compatible borderless or windowed DX10/DX11 games.
- Use Best performance only when plugged in and when sustained performance justifies the extra heat and noise.
- Disable only known, unnecessary startup apps and problematic overlays.
- Repeat the same benchmark and compare average FPS, 1% lows, frame times, temperatures, clocks, and latency.
- Test HAGS or Memory Integrity only when there is a specific reason, and restore the safer default after troubleshooting.
When to stop tweaking
Keep a setting only when the improvement is repeatable, relevant to the problem you are solving, and worth its trade-off. If the bottleneck is a GPU, CPU, insufficient RAM, thermal limit, or poorly optimized game, Windows configuration cannot remove the hardware limitation. At that point, targeted hardware changes—such as more RAM, faster storage for loading workloads, or improved cooling when throttling is confirmed—are more credible than another debloat script.
If a change causes instability, revert it immediately. If necessary, use Safe Mode, driver rollback, System Restore, or the relevant OEM recovery option. Re-enable security features after testing.
