Nvidia restored 32-bit GPU-accelerated PhysX support for RTX 50-series graphics cards with GeForce Game Ready Driver 591.44, released on December 4, 2025. The fix applies to nine selected classic PC games—not every legacy PhysX title and not all 32-bit CUDA applications.
If you own an RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 or another Blackwell GPU, install a current official Game Ready driver and test your game against Nvidia’s supported-title list before considering older hardware or unofficial workarounds.

What Nvidia actually restored
RTX 50-series cards originally launched without the 32-bit CUDA application support used by some older games’ GPU-accelerated PhysX implementations. In affected titles, enabling advanced PhysX effects could force the game to process smoke, cloth, debris and particles on the CPU instead, sometimes causing major performance problems.
Driver 591.44 added title-specific compatibility for selected games. The technically accurate description is restored 32-bit GPU-accelerated PhysX effects in supported classic games. It is not a universal restoration of 32-bit CUDA, a guarantee for every PhysX game, or a blanket compatibility update for every edition and remaster.

- Axial-tech fans feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Vapor chamber ensures efficient heat transfer for lower GPU temps
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
Nvidia’s driver archive identifies 591.44 as the relevant Windows GeForce Game Ready release. The driver also supported newer games, including Battlefield 6: Winter Offensive and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7; the PhysX support was an additional compatibility feature.
The nine games included initially
The initial supported list, reported from Nvidia’s release information, contains these titles:
| Game | Initial status |
|---|---|
| Alice: Madness Returns | Included |
| Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag | Included |
| Batman: Arkham City | Included |
| Batman: Arkham Origins | Included |
| Borderlands 2 | Included |
| Mafia II | Included |
| Metro 2033 | Included |
| Metro: Last Light | Included |
| Mirror’s Edge | Included |
Batman: Arkham Asylum was reported as planned for support in 2026, but it was not part of the original nine-game launch list. Its inclusion should be treated separately from the initial rollout.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not generalize by franchise. Support for Arkham City and Arkham Origins does not automatically cover Arkham Asylum or Arkham Knight. Likewise, Borderlands 2 does not establish support for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and support for Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light does not automatically cover every Metro release or remaster. The executable, edition, launcher and patch level can all matter.
Nvidia’s broader PhysX game catalog also notes that its list is not necessarily complete, so it should not be read as proof that every listed game has the same RTX 50-series compatibility treatment.

How RTX 50-series owners should test the fix
- Check your driver. Open the Nvidia App or Nvidia Control Panel and note the installed display-driver version.
- Install an official current driver. Driver 591.44 introduced the restoration, but Nvidia’s archive lists newer releases as well, including version 610.88 dated July 28, 2026. Use the official Nvidia driver page or the Nvidia App.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Confirm that your exact game is supported. Do not assume that a sequel, remaster or alternate launcher uses the same PhysX path.
- Enable the game’s own PhysX option if it exposes one. Quality settings and menu labels vary by title.
- Compare behavior with PhysX enabled and disabled. Look for the expected effects and watch for instability, unusually low performance or a CPU fallback.
No universal Nvidia App switch is documented for this feature. There is also no single Nvidia Control Panel setting that is confirmed to fix every supported game. The driver branch provides the compatibility layer, while the actual PhysX option is game-dependent.
What the update does not guarantee
- It does not restore every 32-bit CUDA application. Nvidia’s wording is limited to 32-bit GPU-accelerated PhysX effects in selected titles.
- It does not support every legacy PhysX game. Unsupported games may still use CPU PhysX, lose effects or behave inconsistently.
- It does not promise RTX 40-series-style performance. Results depend on the game version, PhysX quality, resolution, CPU, driver profile, frame-rate caps and engine limitations.
- It does not make remasters identical to original releases. A remastered game may use a different executable or physics implementation.
Restoring the GPU path is the meaningful improvement. It does not guarantee a particular frame rate or prove that every visual or performance problem in an old game has been solved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your game is not working
The game is still slow
First verify the driver version, the exact game edition and whether GPU PhysX is enabled in the game. Check for CPU fallback, V-sync, a frame-rate cap or an old engine limitation before concluding that the driver is broken. Low overall GPU usage alone is not conclusive: legacy engines can distribute work unpredictably on modern systems.
PhysX effects are missing
Possible causes include an unsupported title or edition, a PhysX quality setting below the level that activates the effect, a reset configuration file, a mod conflict or a mismatched driver profile. Back up configuration files before changing them or experimenting with mods.
The game crashes after PhysX is enabled
- Disable PhysX in the game’s settings.
- Restore the previous configuration file, or remove the generated settings file so the game can rebuild it.
- Remove unofficial driver-profile changes.
- Test without mods.
- Only then consider a clean driver installation if the symptoms appear driver-related.
Unofficial profile edits, including changes made with profile tools, may help additional games in some cases, but they are not part of Nvidia’s official announcement. They can cause crashes, broken effects or inconsistent rendering and may be overwritten by later drivers.

Can a second Nvidia GPU help?
For an unsupported 32-bit PhysX game, an older secondary Nvidia card may provide a fallback if the system and driver configuration allow it to be assigned as the PhysX processor. This is enthusiast territory, not the normal solution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A second card requires suitable motherboard space, power delivery, cooling and software support. It adds heat, power consumption and setup complexity, and multi-GPU behavior varies by game and driver. It also does not make the RTX 50-series card itself universally compatible with every old PhysX title.
Recent testing has explored secondary-GPU configurations for classic Batman games, but buying an old card solely for a handful of legacy titles is difficult to justify for most players. Reusing hardware you already own is more reasonable than purchasing a second GPU as a first response.
What changed after driver 591.44?
591.44 remains the historically important release because it introduced the RTX 50-series PhysX restoration on December 4, 2025. It should not be described as the current Nvidia driver in 2026. As of August 18, 2026, Nvidia’s archive listed newer Game Ready releases, including 610.88 from July 28, 2026.
For practical purposes, install the current official driver rather than searching specifically for 591.44—unless you are troubleshooting a known regression and have a documented reason to test an older version.
Bottom line
Nvidia did restore the intended GPU-accelerated 32-bit PhysX path for RTX 50-series owners, but only for a defined group of classic games. Driver 591.44 fixed an important compatibility gap for titles such as Batman: Arkham City, Borderlands 2, Mafia II, Metro 2033 and Mirror’s Edge; it did not bring back universal 32-bit CUDA or every old PhysX game. Check the exact title and edition, install an official current driver, and treat profile tweaks or a second GPU as experimental fallbacks rather than required upgrades.
