On Steam, open Store Preferences and adjust Mature Content Filtering. On itch.io, go to Settings > Content and turn off Show content marked as adult in search & browse. For a child’s Steam account, use Family View with a PIN instead. These controls reduce adult content in store searches, browsing, and recommendations, but they are not guaranteed device-wide blocks: direct links, unmarked projects, community content, and external websites may still expose it.
Choose how strict the filter should be
“Adult games” can mean different things:
- Adult-only sexual content: the closest match for explicitly pornographic games.
- Nudity or sexual content: may also include romance, sexual themes, nudity, or incidental sexual imagery in otherwise mainstream games.
- General mature content: can include drugs, disturbing themes, strong language, or other mature subjects unrelated to sex.
- Violence or gore: a separate category that may be filtered independently.
- Adult/NSFW on itch.io: a project label that is not identical to Steam’s content categories.
If you only want to remove pornographic recommendations, use the narrowest setting first. If you are configuring a child’s device, use access controls rather than relying only on storefront discovery filters.

How to hide adult games on Steam
- Sign in to Steam.
- Open Store Preferences. You can also reach it from your account menu on the Steam Store.
- Find Mature Content Filtering.
- Disable Adult Only Sexual Content.
- If unwanted sexual titles still appear, also disable Nudity or Sexual Content.
- Disable broader mature categories only if you also want to remove nonsexual mature themes.
- Reload the Store or restart the Steam client if recommendations do not update immediately.
The exact labels or layout may change between the Steam website, client, region, and account state. Steam requires you to be signed in to save account preferences.
The narrowest practical Steam setup
For an adult who wants to keep mature action RPGs, horror games, or serious story-driven games while reducing explicit recommendations, start with Adult Only Sexual Content. Add Nudity or Sexual Content only if the result is not strict enough. Avoid disabling General Mature Content unless you also want to hide games involving mature language, drugs, disturbing themes, or similar material.

This is not a perfect classification boundary. Steam’s warning and filtering behavior relies on product information supplied through developers’ mature-content disclosures and the player’s preferences. Exclude Steam tags such as Hentai
For additional cleanup, return to Store Preferences and use the tag-exclusion area to exclude tags associated with unwanted material, such as Hentai where that tag is available. This has been suggested as a supplementary workaround in the Steam Community.

Tag exclusions are not a reliable adult-content firewall. Tags may be missing, inaccurate, user-assigned, or too broad. A sexual game may not use the tag you excluded, while legitimate anime or visual-novel games may disappear from recommendations. Treat this as a secondary discovery tool, not a guarantee.

When one recurring title is the problem, choose Ignore or Not Interested wherever Steam shows that control in recommendations or discovery pages. Steam says ignored products are excluded from future recommendations and featured spots; it does not describe Ignore as a complete block against search results, community pages, or direct links. Use Steam Family View for a child or shared PC
Family View is the better choice when the goal is to prevent a child from browsing or buying adult material. It can gate access to the Steam Store, Library, Community, and Friends features behind an additional PIN. To configure it:
- Sign in to the adult or owner account.
- Open Steam’s Family View setup or management controls.
- Select the areas the restricted user may access.
- Set an additional PIN and keep it private.
- Test the restricted account before handing over the computer.
Family View is broader than an adult-content filter: it may restrict entire Steam sections and can be excessive for an adult who only wants cleaner recommendations. Consult Steam’s Family View support page.

How to hide adult games on itch.io
- Sign in to itch.io.
- Open your account or profile menu and choose Settings.
- Open the Content section.
- Turn off Show content marked as adult in search & browse.
- Save if itch.io presents a save control, then reload your search or browse page.
The wording matters: this setting is specifically for content marked as adult in search and browse. It is not described as a universal block on every project page, image, direct URL, or external link. The setting is documented in this itch.io support discussion.

URL behavior can depend on the type of browse page, so use the account-level Content setting as the primary control. The /sfw technique is described in an itch.io support thread.
Why adult games may still appear
Neither platform can identify every unwanted title perfectly. Filters depend on labels, tags, developer disclosures, moderation, and the surface where the content appears.
- Direct links: a storefront browse filter is not necessarily a network-level block. Steam may show a warning or age-gate rather than remove the page; itch.io’s setting is explicitly limited to search and browse.
- Incorrect or missing labels: an unmarked itch.io project or incorrectly categorized Steam product may bypass the relevant filter.
- Community and user-generated content: screenshots, artwork, Workshop items, discussions, profiles, and embedded images may not follow the same rules as standard store listings.
- Different accounts or sessions: preferences are account-specific. A logged-out browser, another Steam account, or a stale client session may show different results.
- Other product types: DLC, demos, soundtracks, tools, assets, comics, and other non-game projects can appear through different pages or searches.
- Cached recommendations: Steam recommendations may not change instantly. Refresh the client and website before judging the result.

Steam provides more granular content categories and a stronger family-access mode. itch.io provides a simpler account toggle plus a convenient browse suffix. Neither should be treated as a complete parental-control system for the entire computer.

- Confirm you are signed in to the intended account.
- Recheck Store Preferences and disable both Adult Only Sexual Content and Nudity or Sexual Content if necessary.
- Add relevant tags to the exclusion list.
- Use Ignore or Not Interested for recurring titles.
- Check whether the material is a DLC, demo, community post, or user-generated item.
- Refresh both the Steam client and the website.
- Use Family View rather than discovery filters for a child’s account.

- Verify that you are signed in.
- Confirm Show content marked as adult in search & browse is turned off.
- Reload the page or clear stale browser state.

Bottom line
For a personal Steam account, disable Adult Only Sexual Content first, then add Nudity or Sexual Content or tag exclusions if needed. For a child, configure Family View with a private PIN. On itch.io, disable Show content marked as adult in search & browse and use /sfw on browse pages. If you need to prevent exposure beyond storefront searches and recommendations, combine these settings with device, browser, or network-level controls.
