How to Find and Interpret a Game’s AI Disclosure on Steam

To find a game’s AI disclosure, open its Steam store page and look for the developer’s AI-use statement. Valve says much of the information developers submit in the Steamworks Content Survey appears on the store page, but its public documentation does not promise a fixed position on every page or client. Once you find it, read the wording for what content is involved and whether it was made during development or generated while the game runs.

The statement is useful, but it is not a complete technical audit of every tool used to make a game. The most reliable reading starts with three questions: what was created with AI, where does that material appear, and was it prepared in advance or generated during play?

Where is the AI disclosure on a Steam game page?

Start on the game’s Steam store page. Valve says it includes much of the developer’s disclosure so customers can understand how the game uses AI; the statement may not appear in the same place on every page or Steam client. If you do not spot it immediately, scan the page rather than relying on a particular heading, tab, or position.

There is no dependable universal instruction such as “look directly below the screenshots.” Store pages can be displayed differently in a desktop browser, the Steam client, and other supported views, and Valve’s public documentation does not prescribe one fixed on-page location. Search the page for terms such as “AI,” “generative,” “generated,” or “content,” but also read the surrounding text so you understand what the developer is actually describing.

The disclosure originates in the Steamworks Content Survey, which developers complete as part of Steam’s content-review process. Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey describes the categories of AI use it asks developers about. Valve’s announcement about AI content on Steam, published January 10, 2024, says much of the submitted information will be shown on the store page.

That wording matters. “Much of” does not mean that every internal survey field, attachment, explanation, or technical detail necessarily appears publicly. What customers see is the public-facing part of the developer’s submission, not a copy of the entire Steamworks workflow.

A practical way to locate it

  1. Open the current store page. Use the page for the specific edition or app you intend to buy, since a franchise can have separate entries and separate disclosures.
  2. Read the page rather than relying on a screenshot. A cached image, review, or social-media post may show an older version of the text.
  3. Scan the full page. Check the description and other informational areas where Steam places policy or content notices, without assuming a fixed location.
  4. Record the exact wording. If the statement is important to your purchasing decision, save the page address and date you checked it. Valve does not describe a universal public change-history mechanism.
  5. Compare with developer announcements when needed. An announcement can clarify a short store-page statement, but it does not replace the current Steam disclosure.

If you cannot find a statement, do not immediately conclude that no AI was used. The official documentation explains Valve’s disclosure process, but it does not establish that the visible store-page text is a complete independent inventory of every AI use during development.

What does Steam mean by pre-generated AI?

Pre-generated content is created with AI tools during development and shipped with the game for players to consume. It may include artwork, code, sound, or other material; the survey’s description focuses on content that ships with the game and is consumed by players.

The timing is the defining feature. A studio can use a tool months before release, review or edit the result, and include the finished asset in the build. Once the game is running, that particular asset is already there. It is therefore pre-generated even if the player encounters it for the first time during a later play session.

Possible examples include a character illustration, a background texture, a piece of music, a recorded voice line, written dialogue, a translated line, or another asset incorporated into the release. Valve’s categories can also encompass code or other content, but a public statement may use a broad label instead of listing every file or production step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-generated does not automatically describe the amount of AI involvement. “AI-assisted artwork” could mean a tool produced an initial image that artists substantially changed, or it could refer to a largely unchanged generated asset. The disclosure’s usefulness depends on how clearly the developer explains the content and its role. Do not infer a precise percentage of AI-made material unless the developer actually provides one.

What is live-generated AI on Steam?

Live-generated content is created while the game is running. In this category, the output is produced during play rather than prepared in advance and simply included in the shipped build.

Live generation could affect what a player sees, hears, reads, or otherwise receives in a session. The exact implementation is not supplied by the category name alone: a developer might describe generated text, images, dialogue, or another player-facing output. Read the developer’s statement for the actual content and the circumstances in which it is generated.

Valve’s survey asks developers who report live generation to describe the guardrails they use to prevent illegal content. This is an additional disclosure requirement for that category. A public statement may say that safeguards exist without explaining their implementation, coverage, testing, or failure handling. Treat a mention of guardrails as information about what the developer reports, not as proof that a reader can independently measure their effectiveness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Live-generated content can also change over time, which makes the wording especially important. A description of a system that was accurate at launch may not explain later changes to prompts, filters, models, or server-side services. If the developer posts an update, compare it with the current store page instead of assuming that an old announcement is still complete.

Pre-generated versus live-generated: the key comparison

The simplest distinction is when the content is made:

  • Pre-generated: AI-assisted content is created during development and shipped for players to consume.
  • Live-generated: AI creates content while the game is running.

A game can use both. For example, its released art could include pre-generated images while an in-game conversation system produces live text. Conversely, a title can disclose only pre-generated material and have no live generation at all. Do not treat the two labels as mutually exclusive choices for an entire game.

The distinction also helps answer practical questions. If you want to know whether your play session might receive newly generated material, look for live-generated language. If your concern is whether shipped assets were made with AI during production, look for pre-generated language and the content types named alongside it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I interpret the wording in a disclosure?

Use the statement as a description of reported AI use, then check how specifically it identifies the material and its role. A broad phrase such as “AI used for assets” provides less detail than naming the content type and explaining where it appears.

  1. Identify the content. Look for references to artwork, user-interface elements, sound, music, voice, story, dialogue, localization, or store and promotional material. These are possible content types, not a checklist every developer must itemize in public. If the statement names only “assets,” you cannot know from that phrase alone whether it means images, audio, writing, or something else.
  2. Check where it appears. Distinguish content in the playable game from store-page, community, or marketing material when the developer specifies that scope. A disclosure that names a type of content without saying where it is used leaves that part of the picture unclear. A store image and an in-game texture are both player-facing in a broad sense, but they are not the same use.
  3. Check when it is created. Content made during development and shipped for players is pre-generated; content made while the game runs is live-generated. A statement may describe one or both categories.
  4. Look for the degree of human involvement described. Note whether the developer says AI produced a draft, assisted a workflow, or supplied a final player-facing asset. Do not fill in missing details with assumptions; the public wording may not answer this question.
  5. Assess how much detail is provided. Note whether the developer names the content, its use, and—if it is live-generated—the guardrails. Specificity tells you how informative the statement is; it does not prove that unmentioned uses are absent.
  6. Separate content from production efficiency. Valve says the generative-AI section is about content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. Efficiency gains from AI-powered development tools are not the focus of this section.

Valve’s official wording is direct: “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” That means the disclosure is not intended to be a general list of every productivity tool, coding assistant, brainstorming system, or internal experiment a studio may have used. It is centered on relevant player-consumed content.

Does a Steam AI disclosure mean the whole game was made by AI?

No. The disclosure concerns the reported use of AI for particular content, such as artwork, sound, narrative, or localization; it does not say that AI made the entire game. Read the developer’s description to understand which material it covers and avoid treating a broad or brief statement as a complete inventory.

A disclosure can be significant without describing the whole production. A studio might identify generated voice lines but use conventional tools for programming, animation, level design, and most writing. Another studio might report a narrow use for promotional art. The category tells you that a relevant use was reported, not how much of the total game was made with AI.

Likewise, the absence of a named model, vendor, training source, percentage, or list of files does not let you calculate the scope. Valve’s public survey description does not promise that every such detail will be displayed on a store page.

What does Valve’s review mean?

Valve says it evaluates AI-generated output in pre-release review under the same general content and marketing-consistency expectations it applies to other content. Completing a disclosure does not exempt a game from Steam’s content rules.

In practical terms, the presence of a disclosure is not a special approval badge, and the use of AI is not by itself a finding that a game violates policy. The relevant output remains subject to Steam’s ordinary expectations. A disclosure tells customers that the developer reported a use; it does not replace Valve’s broader review or guarantee a particular quality level.

What does the disclosure not tell me?

A Steam AI disclosure is a developer-provided description reviewed by Valve as part of its process. It is not, by itself, a comprehensive independent audit, a quality rating, or an endorsement of the game. This is why the safest reading focuses on what the statement expressly says and avoids claims about what it silently omits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also does not necessarily tell you:

  • which specific model or software produced an output;
  • what training data was used;
  • how much human editing occurred;
  • the proportion of the game made with AI;
  • every internal development use that did not result in relevant shipped content;
  • how effective live-generation guardrails are in every possible situation; or
  • whether an earlier statement has been superseded by a later update.

Valve’s public Content Survey documentation describes disclosure categories and the requirement to describe guardrails for live generation, but it does not promise that a public statement will include all of those technical or legal details. If a particular issue matters to you, look for additional information in the developer’s own announcements, interviews, or support channels and distinguish those explanations from the Steam disclosure itself.

Do not treat the absence of a visible statement as proof that no AI was used. Valve’s public documentation explains its disclosure process, but does not establish that the store-page text is a complete independent inventory of every AI use during development. The public-facing statement should therefore be read as reported information, not as a certification that all possible uses have been ruled out.

Does the disclosure cover store and promotional material?

It can, when the developer specifies that scope. Valve’s examples of relevant content include player-facing material such as artwork, sound, narrative, and localization, and a developer may discuss store or promotional material separately. Do not assume that an image in a store carousel was made the same way as an image inside the game, or assume the reverse.

Look for the location words in the statement: “in-game,” “store page,” “marketing,” “community,” or similar language. If no location is given, record that limitation rather than assigning the asset to one category. The distinction is useful for players who care about AI in the playable experience, as well as for readers evaluating the presentation used to sell the game.

Can a developer update an AI disclosure after release?

Valve’s Content Survey FAQ says that after a build and store page are approved for release, some survey answers cannot be edited without first contacting Steam Support. That means a developer may not be able to revise every answer directly after approval.

If the disclosure looks outdated, compare the current store page with relevant developer announcements. Check whether a later update added live generation, changed a system, replaced an asset, or clarified that an earlier statement covered only marketing material. Steam’s public documentation does not describe a universal public history of changes, so readers may have to piece together timing from the current page and dated announcements.

Do not assume that a missing revision proves a developer ignored a change. The documented process includes contacting Steam Support for some post-approval edits, and the public page may not expose the underlying edit history.

Common mistakes when reading Steam’s AI label

Assuming a fixed location

Steam does not promise one universal position for the notice. A guide that tells you to look in one exact spot may become inaccurate across clients or page layouts. Scan the current page instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Equating any AI use with live generation

An AI-made image included in the shipped build is pre-generated, even though you see it while playing. Live generation means the game creates the content while it runs.

Calling the disclosure a certification

The statement is a developer report reviewed in Valve’s process, not an independent audit or an endorsement. It does not rate artistic quality, originality, or value.

Assuming no label means no AI

The official material does not establish that the public display is a complete inventory of all development uses. Absence of a visible statement is not conclusive proof.

Using a community list as the final authority

Community-curated lists can help readers discover examples, but they are not Valve’s policy documentation. For instance, Steam Community curator listings are community material; use the game’s current store-page statement and Valve’s official documentation when interpreting the disclosure rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading “AI-assisted” as a percentage

Unless the developer supplies a measured proportion, the phrase does not tell you how many assets, lines, or hours of work involved AI. Avoid converting a qualitative statement into a number.

A quick checklist for evaluating a disclosure

  1. Find the game’s current Steam store page.
  2. Copy or note the exact disclosure wording and the date you checked it.
  3. Mark each named content type: art, UI, sound, music, voice, story, dialogue, localization, code, or promotional material.
  4. Mark the location of each use: in-game, store page, community, marketing, or unspecified.
  5. Classify the timing as pre-generated, live-generated, or both.
  6. If live generation is reported, note what guardrails the developer says it uses.
  7. Separate explicit facts from unanswered questions.
  8. Check dated developer announcements if the statement appears incomplete or stale.
  9. Use Valve’s Content Survey documentation for category definitions and the current store page for the developer’s actual wording.

Does an AI disclosure affect whether I should buy the game?

Valve does not present the disclosure as a recommendation or a quality score. Whether the use matters to you is a personal decision. The statement can help you decide whether a game’s production methods, player-facing assets, or live systems fit your preferences, but it cannot answer every question about quality, labor, licensing, originality, or performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Steam AI disclosure name the AI model or training data?

Valve’s public Content Survey documentation describes the disclosure categories and asks about live-generation guardrails, but it does not promise that a public statement will identify a specific model or training dataset. If those details matter to you, look for additional information in the developer’s own announcements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an AI disclosure a warning that a game is against Steam rules?

No. Valve says AI-generated output is reviewed under the same general content and marketing-consistency expectations applied to other content. The disclosure itself is not a policy violation or a verdict on the game.

Can a Steam curator’s AI list confirm what a game disclosed?

A curator list is community-produced, so it may be useful as a pointer but is not an authoritative record of Valve’s survey or the developer’s complete statement. Check the game’s current store page for the disclosure itself.

What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated AI?

Pre-generated content is made during development and shipped with the game for players to consume. Live-generated content is created while the game is running. A game can use one category or both.

Does AI-generated code automatically appear in the public disclosure?

Valve’s survey description can include code or other content, but the public statement may use broad wording and does not promise a file-by-file inventory. Read what the developer actually identifies rather than assuming every internal coding tool is listed.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If I see an AI-made image during play, is it live-generated?

Not necessarily. If the image was created during development and included in the shipped build, it is pre-generated even though you encounter it during play. Live generation means the game creates the content while it runs.

Are AI tools used only for efficiency covered by this label?

Valve says efficiency gains through AI-powered development tools are not the focus of this section. The survey is centered on relevant content that ships with the game and is consumed by players.

Can the disclosure include AI used for a store page or advertising?

It can when the developer specifies that scope. Check whether the wording refers to in-game content, store-page material, community content, or marketing. If no location is stated, that part remains unclear.

Can a developer change the disclosure after launch?

Valve’s Content Survey FAQ says some answers cannot be edited after a build and store page are approved without first contacting Steam Support. Check the current page and dated developer announcements for later clarification; there is no universal public change-history mechanism described in the documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a short disclosure prove that only a small amount of AI was used?

No. Brevity indicates that the public wording is limited, not that the underlying use was small. A short statement cannot establish a percentage or complete scope unless the developer supplies those details.

The Bottom Line

Find the current statement on the game’s Steam store page, then read it for content type, location, and timing. Pre-generated means AI-assisted material was made during development and shipped for players; live-generated means the game creates content while it runs, with developers expected to describe safeguards against illegal content. Treat the wording as a developer report reviewed under Valve’s ordinary content standards—not as a complete independent audit, a quality score, or proof that every other AI use is absent.
