To find Japanese-language pixel-art games on Steam, filter Steam search by Japanese and the Pixel Graphics tag, then check each game’s language, developer and publisher, controller support, and Steam Deck compatibility on its store page. Japanese-language support does not mean a game was made in Japan.

Find pixel-art games with Japanese support

  1. Open Steam search and use its language filter to select Japanese.

  2. Add the Pixel Graphics tag using the tag filter, if it is available in the current search interface.

  3. Open promising listings rather than relying on a fixed result count or ranking. Steam’s search facets and results can change.

The Japanese language filter means a game supports Japanese; it does not identify the developer’s nationality or the game’s country of origin. Steam’s language, developer, and publisher fields answer different questions.

Check what Japanese-language support includes

On the store page, inspect the language matrix for interface, full audio, and subtitles separately. A Japanese interface does not guarantee Japanese voice acting or subtitles, and subtitle support does not mean every menu is translated.

For example, Tsukuru Series: RTA QUEST lists Japanese interface and subtitles, while stating that other languages are not included. Treat the listing’s categories as the practical guide to what is supported, rather than assuming “Japanese support” covers every part of a game.

How to tell whether a game is Japanese-made

Check the developer and publisher fields on the individual listing. They identify the credited companies, but language support alone is not evidence of where a game was made. For instance, the cited listings credit RETSUZAN and Gotcha Gotcha Games for Tsukuru Series: RTA QUEST, Nolla Games for Noita, and Askiisoft and Devolver Digital for Katana ZERO. These credits are distinct from each game’s language specifications.

Check controls and Steam Deck compatibility

Steam search offers controller-support and Steam Deck compatibility facets. Use them to narrow candidates, then confirm the labels on each game’s own store page: controller support varies by title, and compatibility should not be inferred from a search tag or from another game.

The cited examples illustrate why checking individually matters: RTA QUEST and Katana ZERO list full controller support, while Noita lists partial controller support. All three listings display Steam Deck Verified, but that status applies to those individual listings and may change. Consult the live Deck compatibility section for every title you plan to play.
