Find free open-world RPGs for PC through official storefronts, then check each game’s own listing before you install it. A store’s free-to-play page or genre filter is a place to discover candidates—not proof that a particular game is currently free, an RPG, or open-world. Download through the store or a route the publisher itself confirms, and treat unfamiliar mirrors and unsolicited links as unsafe.
Where to look for free PC RPGs
Start with established storefronts rather than general web searches for “free download.” Their catalogs and promotions change, and no single category page establishes a complete list of games that are simultaneously free, open-world, RPGs, and available for PC.

As of October 4, 2026, Epic’s official free-games page displayed Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, and Once Human. These are examples shown on that date, not a guarantee that each meets every player’s definition of an open-world RPG, is available in every region, or will remain listed. Recheck the live page and each game’s tags, description, price, and requirements.
Free-to-play, demo, or giveaway?
“Free” can describe different offers. A free-to-play game can generally be downloaded and played without paying upfront, although its individual listing may describe optional purchases. A giveaway is a promotion with its own terms and time window; claiming it during the offer does not make it equivalent to a free-to-play catalog listing. A demo is a limited sample rather than necessarily the full game.

Before downloading, read the title’s own store page and identify which kind of offer it is. Do not infer a game’s price or eligibility from a category label alone.
A safe download checklist
- Search a known storefront. Look inside Steam, Epic Games Store, or another established PC store. On GOG, RPG and open-world filters can help surface candidates, but they do not establish that a title is free.
- Check the individual listing. Confirm the current price and offer terms, PC availability, publisher, and system requirements. Check the description and tags for evidence that it is the kind of game you want.
- Use an official route. Install through the storefront’s own client, or follow a download link that the publisher’s official website identifies. Check the domain carefully; an ad, forum post, social message, or mirror calling itself a “free download” does not show that it is authorized.
- Keep protection on. Keep your operating system and antivirus protection enabled and updated. Stop if an installer asks you to disable security software, requests unexpected permissions, or comes from a cracked-game site. The Australian Cyber Security Centre warns: “Fraudulent or pirated software could contain malware, or may not receive updates.”
- Verify SmartScreen warnings rather than dismissing them. Microsoft explains that SmartScreen checks site and file reputation. A warning about an unfamiliar file is not, by itself, proof that the file is malware; verify the download source and publisher before deciding what to do. Likewise, no warning is not proof that a download is safe.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises: “By relying on the official sources for all your software you are much less likely to accidentally install malware on your computer, tablet or other device.” Its guidance, “Online gaming for families and individuals,” was published on January 17, 2019, and reviewed on January 7, 2022. Microsoft also recommends downloading apps only from trusted sources and keeping antivirus protection updated.

If an Epic game has damaged files
For a game installed through Epic Games Launcher, Epic Support says its Verify feature checks for damaged or corrupted files and repairs differences without affecting saved data.
- Open Library in Epic Games Launcher.
- Open the game’s menu and select Manage.
- Select Verify and let the check finish.
This is a repair step for files in an Epic-installed game, not a way to validate installers downloaded from unofficial sites.
