To use artifacts in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, locate an anomalous field, follow the handheld detector’s artifact signal, and carefully test your route with bolts. Once collected, inspect the artifact’s benefits and drawbacks before equipping it in a suit belt slot—or selling it to a merchant for Coupons.
How to find and collect an artifact
- Find an anomalous field. Artifact-bearing fields include acid, gravitational, thermal, electro, whirlwind, gas, and vortex anomalies, according to Gamer Guides’ artifact guide.
- Use the handheld artifact detector. Keep it available and follow its signal. On the basic detector, the light flashes more frequently as you get closer to an artifact.
- Check the route ahead with bolts. Throw bolts toward suspicious ground to trigger and expose anomalies before walking into them. A bolt can help you test a route; it does not make the entire field safe.
- Keep tracking until the artifact appears. Detecting an artifact and collecting it are separate steps. When it becomes visible, move within reach and pick it up.
The detector’s automatic hazard warning and its handheld artifact-tracking signal serve different purposes. The warning can alert you to nearby anomalies or high radiation even when the detector is not in your hands; the handheld signal guides you toward the hidden artifact. Pixel Twelve’s detector guide says Echo helps narrow the artifact’s direction and distance, while Veles can show its exact position. More precise tracking helps with the final approach, but it does not neutralize nearby hazards.

How to cross an anomalous field more safely
- Pause if the hazard warning becomes more frequent or the surroundings signal danger.
- Throw a bolt to check the next suspicious patch of ground and watch for an anomaly to activate.
- Move only after assessing the patch ahead, then continue following the artifact signal separately.
- Repeat the check as you advance. If an anomaly briefly opens after activation, treat that as a short opportunity—not a permanent safe path.
How to decide whether to equip, keep, or sell an artifact
Read both sides of an artifact’s description before equipping it. Most artifacts offer a benefit alongside a cost, often radiation. They occupy suit belt slots; better suits or suit upgrades can provide more room. Weigh the artifact’s effect and drawback against your current needs and available slots rather than treating every find as an automatic upgrade.
For example, Gamer Guides lists Magma as an early artifact found in thermal anomalies, including Magnetic Cave in the Lesser Zone. Its guide describes weak thermal protection and a weak weight-limit gain, offset by a medium radiation-protection penalty. That combination is a reason to check the item’s full description and decide whether its benefit is worth the cost for your situation.
#1 Best Overall
- The first console reported version of the survival horror FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series that has sold over 15 million units worldwide
- Chornobili, its tragedy doesn't end
- Genre: Open World FPS
Unwanted artifacts can be sold to merchants for Coupons. Before selling one, consider whether a mission you know about asks for that artifact type; some missions offer a reward for a requested item. Whether to keep or sell depends on its effect, your needs, and any relevant quest—not a blanket rule that all artifacts belong in your inventory or on the market.
Do some areas have better artifact spawn chances?
The available sources do not establish dependable spawn probabilities by area, so there is no reliable basis here for ranking fields by how likely they are to produce an artifact. A guide updated August 27, 2026, distinguishes fixed-location “Weird” artifacts from finds associated with matching anomaly types. It lists Weird Ball at Bulba, Weird Flower at Poppy Field, Weird Bolt at Tornado, Weird Nut at Fire Whirl, Weird Water at Wandering Lights, and Weird Pot at Mist; it also lists Compass, Hypercube, Liquid Rock, and Thunderberry as anomaly-type-linked finds. These are location claims from a secondary guide, not verified spawn-rate data, and exact locations may depend on the game version. See AllThingsHow’s legendary artifact locations guide.

Expansion-specific detector note
Spoiler warning for Cost of Hope: Pixel Twelve’s October 3, 2026 guide describes Svarog as a story detector obtained during “Shadows of the Past,” from Erudite’s body at Tachenko’s Memorial. It is an expansion story item, not a standard base-game shop upgrade. Details may vary with game updates.
