The reliable way to find paths and landmarks in Hillthorn is to treat every card as evidence, not as a collectible checklist. First inventory what you can actually see, then connect a person, object or trace to a place, choose the action that tests that connection, and record what changes. Actions advance the clock, so exploring every branch immediately can waste a day. Knowledge and some shortcuts persist into later days or attempts, making a careful first run valuable even when it does not reach every location.
The officially named preview locations are the village, manor, lonely house, Inn and Inn room, closed school and the Winding Trails route system. The school is explicitly described as requiring a way in. No published source provides a complete landmark checklist or a guaranteed route order, so this guide shows how to uncover the documented places and preserve story clues without presenting an unverified sequence as fact.

What counts as a path or landmark in Hillthorn?
Hillthorn is a wordless, card-based detective game about a disappearance in a secluded mountain community. Its story is revealed through visual Clue cards rather than conventional spoken dialogue. A card can represent a person, object, piece of terrain, weather condition, trace, barrier or recurring symbol. Depending on the card, you may be offered Investigate, Explore or Talk.
A landmark is a named place that gives a group of clues a location: the village, manor, lonely house, Inn, Inn room or closed school. A path is the connection that lets one clue lead toward another card or place. A trail, gate or closed entrance is therefore not necessarily a separate collectible. Its value is whether it answers a question, links evidence or opens a route you can use later.

This distinction matters because the game does not publish a numbered map of every path. The places listed above are documented locations, not a promise that they are the complete route list in every build. Community route orders can also change with updates. Use them as version-specific observations, not as universal instructions.
The lead–test–record cycle
Every action should do one of three things: test a concrete hypothesis, connect two previously unrelated clues or preserve a useful state change for a later day. The following cycle is safer than clicking every available option.
1. Inventory before interpreting
On a new card, write down only what is visible before deciding what it means. Record the people present, objects and their condition, terrain, weather, tracks or other traces, barriers and symbols that recur elsewhere. “A damaged gate beside a trail” is an observation. “The missing couple used this route” is a hypothesis. Keeping those statements separate prevents an attractive theory from steering you away from evidence.
- People: note identity clues, posture, clothing and who is looking at or avoiding what.
- Objects: record unusual items, damage, displacement and anything that appears in another card.
- Terrain: mark paths, slopes, crossings, buildings, entrances and sight lines.
- Traces: include footprints, disturbed ground, stains, marks and signs of weathering.
- Barriers: note gates, locked or closed entrances and any object that appears to block progress.
- Repeated motifs: symbols or visual details that recur are often more useful than a generic landscape.
2. Choose the highest-information connection
Prioritize a clue that can connect a person, an object and a place in one move. A distinctive person, damaged or displaced object, trace that crosses a route, or barrier associated with an unusual item usually carries more information than a broad mountain view. A generic landscape card can wait until another clue gives it context.
When several leads compete, ask which one could explain the most cards or reveal a new location. This is an information-per-action decision, not a judgment about which scene looks most dramatic.
3. Match the action to the question
- Investigate a concrete object, mark or trace. Use it when you need to learn what a thing is, how it was damaged or what detail is easy to overlook.
- Explore when terrain or a visible route could reveal another card or location. Use it for a trail, gate, crossing or entrance that has a specific reason to matter.
- Talk when a character can test a precise question. Approach a person with a clue in mind rather than spending the action on a vague conversation.
The available action is itself a design signal: it tells you what the game considers testable on that card. Do not assume that a closed entrance must be forced immediately, or that every character should be questioned before you know what to ask.
4. Record every state change
After an action, update a simple log. Write down new cards, newly available actions, opened or blocked routes and relationships that became stronger or weaker. If an action produces no visible progress, record that too. A failed route is evidence about the route network and prevents you from repeating the same detour on a later day.

5. Revisit ambiguous cards after knowledge changes
Developer material states that knowledge persists across days, while items may fade and shortcuts or insights can remain. A card that was opaque on day one can become useful after you establish a relationship or inspect a related object. Revisit it when a new clue changes the question you are asking, not simply because it is available again.
How to plan a day when the clock advances
“The clock is ticking” is a mechanical constraint, not just atmosphere. Every action advances in-game time, and there are too many threads to follow in one run. A route that looks close on the map can still be expensive if it requires several investigations and a conversation before it pays off.
Use a three-question priority test
- What can this action explain? Prefer a clue that could connect multiple cards or clarify a named location.
- What does it unlock? Give extra weight to a persistent shortcut, a new relationship or access to a blocked landmark.
- What will I lose by waiting? If the lead is only a generic view with no associated person, object or trace, it can usually wait for a later day.
Do not spend the beginning of every run chasing the longest visible trail. Start with a concrete observation, make one high-value test and then decide whether the result justifies another action in the same day.
Group actions by location
When several clues point to one area, resolve the cluster before travelling elsewhere. Moving back and forth consumes opportunities to test relationships. Conversely, stop a local investigation when it has produced no new card, action or connection and carry the unresolved question forward in your log.
Carry a short list of unresolved relationships
Track questions such as “Which person is associated with this object?” or “Which route passes the damaged barrier?” rather than trying to memorize every image. A later card can answer the question without requiring you to repeat every earlier action.
Documented Hillthorn locations and how to use them
The following places are named in official preview or update material. The descriptions explain what is established and how to approach each location without inventing an access order.
| Location or route | What is documented | Best way to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Village | The initial community context in developer material. | Use people, objects and local traces to establish relationships before pursuing distant paths. |
| Manor | Named in the location preview; no complete official access sequence is published. | Treat clues that connect a person or unusual object to the manor as the access lead. Do not assume a universal lock solution. |
| Lonely house | Named in the same preview. | Verify its card relationships in the current build and record which clues make the house relevant. |
| Inn and Inn room | Both are named locations. A Steam update says moving between them no longer consumes in-game time. | Use the free movement between the two spaces to check related cards without budgeting an extra time cost, while still recording any action taken inside them. |
| Closed school | Preview material says you must find a way in. | Look for the person, object or route clue that explains entry. A lock solution has not been verified for the current build, so do not treat an unconfirmed sequence as definitive. |
| Winding Trails | A route system with feedback for wrong paths; update notes mention improved feedback. | Map each branch by writing down the card or clue that led there and mark wrong turns as route information. |
The village
The village is the safest place to build your initial relationship map because it supplies the community context described by the developers. Begin by identifying who is present and what objects or traces they are associated with. A conversation is most useful after an investigation has produced a specific question; otherwise, preserve the action for a lead that can connect the village to another place.

The manor
The manor is an official named location, but no complete access sequence has been published. When a clue points toward it, record the exact link: a person who mentions it, an object bearing a related mark or a route that visibly leads there. If the game offers Explore, test the route; if it offers Investigate on a relevant object, inspect that first. Do not turn a community-discovered order into a guaranteed solution without checking the build you are playing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe lonely house
The lonely house is also named in the preview. Its presence alone does not tell you which card opens it or whether it is an early or late destination. Verify the relationships shown by your current cards and keep the house in your unresolved-location list until a concrete clue connects it to a person, object or trace.
The Inn and Inn room
The Inn and Inn room are distinct named locations. A Steam update states that moving between them no longer consumes in-game time. That change affects travel planning, not the cost of Investigate, Explore or Talk actions performed there. Use the free movement to compare related cards and check a lead from both spaces, then log which action changed the evidence.
The closed school
The school is the clearest documented access puzzle: preview material says the player must find a way in. That wording confirms a discovery step but does not publish the lock, key, character or route involved. Search for a clue that links the school to an unusual object, barrier or person. If you find a solution in a particular version, label it with that version when sharing it; do not imply that the sequence is guaranteed for every build.
Winding Trails
Winding Trails should be mapped as a network of hypotheses. For each branch, record the card that led you there, the action used and what appeared at the end. Steam update notes mention improved feedback for wrong paths, so a wrong turn is useful information rather than a permanent failure. Mark the branch as tested and return only when another clue changes its significance.

Build a route ledger
Use one line per branch with five fields: starting card, action, destination or result, time cost and unresolved question. For example, “damaged gate → Explore → blocked trail → route tested → who moved the barrier?” is more useful than a vague note saying “gate failed.” Keep observations and theories in separate columns or sentences.
Rank routes by information value
When two paths compete, compare them on the same five axes:

- Information gained per action.
- Whether the route connects a person, object and location.
- Whether it opens a persistent shortcut or knowledge.
- Clock cost.
- Whether the lead is required to access a named landmark such as the school or manor.
This is a decision framework, not an official ranking. It helps you choose deliberately when the game presents several plausible trails.
Confirm a route with a second clue
A single visual resemblance is a weak route claim. Before committing several actions, look for corroboration: the same object on another card, a trace that crosses the route, or a character whose relationship explains why the path matters. If the second clue never appears, keep the route as a hypothesis rather than marking it complete.

Use later days as a deliberate second pass
Because knowledge and some shortcuts carry into later days or attempts, the first run can be an information-gathering run. Record what you learned, then use the next day to test routes that were previously ambiguous. Items may fade, so do not assume every physical object remains available; rely on the persistent insight or shortcut your log identifies.
What to investigate first
If you are starting a new run and do not know which card matters, use this order:
- Concrete traces and damaged objects. They often reveal what happened and where to look next.
- Barriers with an unusual associated item. A gate or closed entrance becomes valuable when another clue explains it.
- Distinctive people. Talk after you can test a specific relationship or contradiction.
- Terrain that visibly continues a known route. Explore when another card points there.
- Generic scenery. Delay it until a person, object or trace supplies context.
This order is a practical heuristic based on the card and time systems. It does not promise the correct story order, and it should yield when a new card supplies a stronger connection.

Exploring every visible trail immediately
The clock makes exhaustive first-pass exploration inefficient. Fix it by requiring a lead: a person, object, trace or barrier that explains why the route matters.
Treating a hypothesis as a fact
A damaged gate may suggest a story, but the image alone does not prove who used it. Keep the hypothesis provisional until another card supports it.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Repeating an action without recording the result
If a path is blocked or a conversation produces no new option, write that state down. Repeating an unproductive action costs another unit of time without adding evidence.
Assuming a closed landmark has a known universal solution
The school is documented as requiring a way in, but the current sources do not establish the lock solution. Verify any key, character or route requirement in your build before publishing or relying on it.
Ignoring version changes
The demo and updates can alter feedback and time costs. The Inn-to-Inn-room movement change is one concrete example. Note your build and check current storefront update notes when a route behaves differently from an older guide.

Demo, release timing and version notes
The free Hillthorn Demo released on February 19, 2026 and contains a few locations, puzzles and an overview of the game loop. The Steam listing showed a planned November 2026 full release; a later dated Steam Community announcement named November 10, 2026 and additional Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android platforms. Because November 10 is a planned date rather than a completed release at the time of the announcement, check the storefront for final timing and platform availability before relying on it.
Route advice should always be identified by build when possible. A demo card set, a post-update build and the full release may present different feedback or time costs. The documented places remain useful orientation points, but no source establishes a complete number of landmarks, paths, completion percentage or guaranteed ending count.
A printable checklist for a complete clue pass
- Have I listed every visible person, object, terrain feature, trace, barrier and repeated motif?
- Which entries are observations, and which are still hypotheses?
- What is the most distinctive connection available right now?
- Does Investigate, Explore or Talk best answer the question?
- What new card, action, relationship or route state appeared afterward?
- Did the action consume time, and is another action in this area worth the cost?
- Have I logged a blocked or wrong path so I will not repeat it blindly?
- Which unresolved relationship should carry into the next day?
- Does a clue now connect to the village, manor, lonely house, Inn, Inn room, school or Winding Trails?
- Am I treating a community route order as version-specific rather than universal?
How to share a route without misleading other players
When you publish your own path notes, identify the platform, build or demo and distinguish observed results from interpretation. State the starting card, action, destination, time effect and any prerequisite. Say “this build opened the school after these clues” rather than presenting an unverified sequence as the definitive solution. For Winding Trails, include wrong branches as well as successful ones; they help readers understand the network and avoid the same detour.
