Steam demos are usually available from a game’s store page, the dedicated demo discovery areas, or Steam Next Fest. Free Weekends are different: they unlock a normally paid game only for a stated period. To find either, watch the current Next Fest hub, search Steam News for “free weekend,” check individual store pages, and verify the promotion’s exact end time in your local region before you start downloading.
What you are looking for: a demo or a Free Weekend?
Steam uses two different kinds of no-cost access, and confusing them can lead to a surprise when a game stops launching or when a limited preview is much shorter than expected.

| Opportunity | Access window | What you play | What happens afterward | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Demo | Usually available whenever the developer keeps it published; an event can also make it prominent for a limited time. | A limited preview of an upcoming or released game. The amount of content, modes and play time are set by the developer. | You keep the demo in your Steam library if you add it, but it does not grant ownership of the full game. | The game’s store page, a separate demo store page, New & Trending, New on Steam, tag or category pages, the demo hub and Next Fest. |
| Free Weekend | A fixed start and end time announced by the publisher or Steam. | Usually the full game or a broad trial of the paid game during the promotion. | Access can stop when the event ends. Buying the game is normally required for continued play; any save or progression carry-over depends on the publisher’s announcement. | Steam News, the game’s store page and the publisher’s event announcement. |
| Next Fest demo | Available through the event’s live period, although a developer may leave its demo published afterward. | Playable previews of unreleased games, presented alongside hundreds of other demos. | The event itself does not turn a demo into a paid-game license. Check the individual game page for what remains available after the festival. | The current Steam Next Fest hub, category and tag browsing, the playable-demos area and developer livestream listings. |
A Free Weekend is therefore not “free to keep.” Treat the displayed end timestamp as a hard deadline unless the publisher explicitly says the access period has been extended or converted into permanent ownership. A demo is a preview, not a time-limited copy of the complete product.

Start with the game’s store page
Search for the game in the Steam Store and open its main store page. When the developer has supplied a demo, Steam may show an install control on that page. In other cases, the demo has its own store page, so look for a separate entry with the game’s title followed by “Demo” or use the demo link shown by the main listing.

This distinction matters when a title appears to have no demo: the full-game page may not contain the install control even though a separate demo listing exists. The reverse is also possible, with the demo presented directly on the full page. Use both routes before concluding that a preview is unavailable.
Use Steam’s demo discovery surfaces
Demos can be surfaced in several parts of the store rather than in one permanent directory. Check:
- the dedicated demo hub;
- New & Trending;
- New on Steam;
- genre, category and tag pages; and
- the current Next Fest hub.
Steam’s July 2024 demo update said that thousands of playable demos launch on Steam every year. A title can therefore be easy to miss if you only search for a particular genre once. Revisiting the discovery pages, or following developers whose work you like, gives you more opportunities to catch newly published previews.

You do not have to download every demo as soon as you discover it. Steam’s July 2024 update added the ability to add demos to your library without immediately installing them. Use the add-to-library option when it is offered, then install from your library when you have time or disk space. This is useful during a large event, when you may want to collect several prospects before deciding which ones to try first.
Use Steam Next Fest for the largest concentration of demos
Next Fest is Steam’s recurring showcase for upcoming games. Valve’s June 2025 announcement described three editions each year, in February, June and October, and called it a way to give developers a concentrated audience for unreleased-game demos. The months are a planning guide, not a permanent calendar: event dates and times can change, so use the live Next Fest page for the current schedule.

Browse the festival efficiently
- Open the Steam Store and search for “Steam Next Fest,” or open the current Next Fest hub from a Steam announcement or store feature.
- Choose the event’s playable-demos area. Steam’s June 2026 preview specifically described a playable-demos tab and an install-demo control.
- Filter or browse by genre, category and tags rather than scrolling the entire event catalogue.
- Open a game’s panel or store page to read its description and confirm that the demo is the item you are installing.
- Check the event schedule and developer livestream listings if you want presentations, interviews or demonstrations from the teams making the games.
During a festival, the hub is usually the fastest way to sample unfamiliar projects because it groups many previews in one place. The game’s own store page remains useful for screenshots, system information and the permanent listing after the event.
Install from the hub
When the hub provides an install control, hover over the game tile or open its details and choose the install-demo button. Steam then treats the demo as a separate install from the full game. If the hub does not show that control, open the game’s store page and use the demo option there instead. The June 2026 preview documented both the playable-demos tab and this install-demo workflow.
Check dates instead of assuming the festival is still live
A Next Fest page can remain discoverable after its headline event has ended. For example, a June 2026 preview listed June 15–22, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. That was a date-specific event window, not a promise that every future June edition will use the same dates or time. Read the live page’s schedule before planning a watch party or treating a festival promotion as still active.
Find Steam Free Weekends
Search Steam News for the promotion
Free Weekend announcements are the most reliable discovery trail because they state which game is participating and when the access period begins and ends. In Steam News, search for “free weekend,” then open the individual announcement for the title that interests you. News results show that dates vary from one game to another, so do not infer a common weekend schedule.
Confirm the game page and the exact times
Open the game’s Steam store page from the announcement and look for the Free Weekend wording or event banner. Compare the start and end timestamps in the announcement with your own region and time zone. The end time is especially important: starting a download before the deadline does not guarantee that you can continue playing after the promotion closes.
Download during the stated window
- Wait until the announcement’s start time in your region.
- Open the game’s store page while the promotion is active.
- Select the option to download or install the game.
- Launch it before the listed end time so you can confirm that the temporary license is active.
- Read the publisher’s announcement for save, achievement or progression details before investing in a long session.
Official event announcements describe the full game being available during the event. One publisher announcement also says that players can retain progress if they later purchase, while another only describes access during the event. Do not assume that every Free Weekend has the same save-transfer policy; use the specific announcement for that game.

A repeatable workflow for finding and trying free Steam games
The following routine covers both permanent demos and temporary trials without relying on a single store page.
- Check the current Next Fest hub. Search the Steam Store for “Steam Next Fest” and open the live event page if one is running.
- Filter the demo catalogue. Use genre, category and tag controls, then open the playable-demos area to remove non-playable event content from your search.
- Save candidates without installing everything. Add promising demos to your library when Steam offers that option; install them later in a manageable batch.
- Search for Free Weekends separately. In Steam News, search “free weekend,” open each relevant announcement and record its start and end time.
- Verify on the individual store page. Confirm whether you are installing a demo or the temporarily unlocked full game. The wording and install control should match the promotion.
- Start time-sensitive trials early. Download and launch a Free Weekend title while the event is active instead of waiting until the final hours.
- Track what you want to revisit. Wishlist the game, follow its developer and enable Steam email or mobile notifications.
- Read the publisher’s terms for progression. If you might buy the game, check whether the announcement addresses saved progress or other carry-over.
This workflow separates discovery from installation: you can collect demos whenever you find them, but you must treat a Free Weekend as a calendar appointment.
Set notifications so Steam finds the next demo for you
Manual browsing is useful during Next Fest, but Steam’s wishlist and follow systems are better for games you already know you want to try. Steam documents notifications when a new demo becomes available for a wishlisted game or for a game from a developer you follow.
- Wishlist the game. Use the wishlist control on the game’s store page. This ties demo-availability alerts to a specific title.
- Follow the developer. This broadens the alert to new demos from that studio, including projects you may not have discovered yet.
- Enable Steam notifications. Review your account’s email and mobile notification settings so an alert can reach you outside the desktop client.
- Keep checking event pages. Notifications cannot replace the Next Fest schedule, category browsing or livestream listings, which may contain games you have never wishlisted.
Notifications are an alerting method, not an ownership promise. They tell you that a demo has become available; you still need to open the listing and decide whether to install it.

How demos and Free Weekends differ in practice
Access window
A normal demo is generally the least time-sensitive option. Once the developer publishes it, you can usually add or install it from the available store listing, subject to that listing remaining active. A Free Weekend has a fixed window, and a Next Fest demo may be highlighted only for the event’s dates even if the developer leaves it online afterward.

Scope
Demos are deliberately limited previews. They may contain one level, a short introduction, selected modes or an early build of an upcoming game. A Free Weekend is promoted as access to the paid game or a much broader trial for the stated period. The store page and publisher announcement, not the label alone, determine exactly what is included.
Retention and purchase decisions
Adding a demo to your library does not purchase the full game. A Free Weekend likewise does not automatically become permanent ownership when the timer expires. If you enjoy the trial, check the store page for the purchase option and read the event announcement for any claim about carrying progress into a later purchase.
Discovery and notifications
Next Fest and the demo hub are designed for browsing many previews. Steam News is the stronger route for Free Weekend announcements. Wishlist and follow notifications can surface new demos, while manual searches are still necessary for promotions you have not tracked in advance.
Common problems and the practical fix
“The game page has no demo button.”
Look for a separate demo store page and search the demo hub, New & Trending, New on Steam, and relevant tag or category pages. Steam may place the install control on one listing but not the other.
“I found a Next Fest game, but I cannot install it.”
Confirm that the current event is still within its published dates and that you are viewing the playable-demos area rather than a schedule or livestream listing. If the hub does not provide an install control, open the game’s own store page and check for the demo there.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
“I downloaded a Free Weekend game, but it stopped working.”
Reopen the original Steam News announcement and check the end timestamp in your region. A Free Weekend is temporary, and downloading before the deadline is not the same as owning the game permanently. If the event has ended, continued access generally requires buying the game unless the publisher announced another arrangement.
“I want to try the demo later, not today.”
Add it to your Steam library without installing it when that option appears. You can return to the library and install it when you are ready.

“Will my progress carry over if I buy the game?”
Do not assume it will. Some official Free Weekend announcements explicitly promise retained progress after purchase; others only describe temporary access. Check the announcement for that particular game before relying on a saved campaign or unlocks.
“I missed the event announcement.”
Search Steam News for “free weekend,” then open the individual game announcement rather than relying on a generic search result. For future demos, wishlist the game, follow its developer and enable Steam’s email or mobile notifications.
Dates and availability change
Valve’s 2025 guidance identified February, June and October as the three Next Fest periods, but those months should not be treated as an immutable calendar. The June 2026 preview’s June 15–22 window, starting at 10:00 a.m. Pacific, illustrates how specific an event listing can be. Always use the current event page for the authoritative date and time.
The same caution applies to demos and Free Weekends. Developers can publish, remove or extend a demo, and each Free Weekend has its own start and end timestamps. Steam’s store page, the event hub and the publisher’s announcement are the places to verify the opportunity you are about to use.

Use the Next Fest hub and Steam’s demo surfaces when you want a large, searchable selection of previews. Use Steam News and individual store pages when you want a temporary trial of a normally paid game. Wishlist titles, follow developers and enable notifications to reduce manual searching. Before downloading a Free Weekend game, record its local end time and read the publisher’s progression policy; the trial is not automatically yours to keep.
