To find promising unfamiliar games in a Steam sale, build a shortlist rather than chasing the biggest discount: start with Steam’s personalized recommendations, search for the genres and experiences you enjoy, check both overall and recent reviews, and try a demo when one is available. Then compare candidates against your own tastes and budget. These signals help narrow the field; none guarantees a game will suit you.
What counts as a “hidden gem” on Steam?
“Hidden gem” is a useful shorthand for a game you might otherwise overlook, not a formal Steam category. The aim is not to find an objectively perfect bargain. It is to spot unfamiliar candidates whose subject, play style, customer feedback, and price make them worth a closer look.

Start with Steam’s personalized discovery tools
Check your home page and Discovery Queue
Steam’s Discovery Queue is a personalized mix of new, top-selling, and similar-to-what-you-play products. Steam’s Discovery Update describes the queue as refreshing automatically each day with new and top-selling releases. Use the queue and your home page as a starting point, not a complete catalog: recommendations reflect signals about your activity, so a good candidate can still be outside the mix.
Use curators as extra leads
Curator recommendations can surface games to inspect, especially when a curator focuses on a genre or style you already like. Treat any recommendation as a lead rather than a verdict; open the store page and evaluate the game for yourself.

Teach recommendations what you want to see
For products in the queue, Steam has described options to add a game to your wishlist, follow its announcements, or mark it as ignored so it is excluded from future recommendations and featured spots. If a title is clearly not for you, ignoring it can help reduce similar recommendations; if you may want it later, wishlist it instead.
Search by the experience you want
Searching only for famous games tends to return familiar options. Instead, try a genre or a more specific tag, mechanic, setting, or mood that describes the experience you want—for example, turn-based tactics, underwater exploration, or a quiet narrative game. Steam documents search by name, tag, or description, along with filters for tags, Steam features, operating system, and language in its Discovery Update.

- Start with one broad genre, then add a specific theme or mechanic to make results more relevant.
- Use feature, operating-system, or language filters when those details matter to you.
- Try related tags if your first search returns too few candidates.
Tags are descriptive categories, not quality ratings. A game appearing under a tag does not establish how well it uses that idea or whether you will enjoy it.

Use the overall signal as a first screen
The broad user-review summary can help you decide which store pages deserve a closer read. It is a quick screen, not a universal pass-or-fail score: a positive percentage cannot tell you whether the game’s pace, difficulty, controls, performance, or story matches your preferences.

Look at recent reviews for current context
Open recent reviews and look for recurring, specific praise or complaints. For example, repeated mentions of a control problem or a technical issue are more useful to investigate than a single vague reaction. Steam’s Discovery Update 2.0, published in 2016, described a snapshot of reviews from the most recent 30 days alongside access to recent customer opinions. That history supports using recent feedback as a separate signal, but does not establish every detail of today’s review display.
Try a demo when a game offers one
A demo lets you test a candidate against your own preferences—how it feels to play, whether its controls make sense to you, and whether the opening holds your interest. Steam provides a page for browsing demos, with filters such as tags, features, and operating system. Demo availability is title-specific; many games may not offer one.

If a demo is available, treat your own experience as evidence alongside the reviews. A demo may answer questions about basic feel and presentation, but it need not show every system or later part of the full game.

Wishlist games that look plausible but need more consideration. This gives you a place to revisit candidates without deciding during a sale rush. Steam’s Discovery Update 2.0 says the default is to email when one or more wishlisted items go on sale or are released. Notifications and wishlist status are tracking aids, not a reason to buy; check your current account settings and the game’s store page before acting.

Compare shortlisted games on the factors that matter to you
Once you have a manageable list, compare candidates using the same questions. There is no official numeric threshold for review scores or sale prices that identifies a hidden gem, so use your own priorities.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Personal fit | Do the tags, themes, mechanics, or mood match what I want to play? |
| Reviews | What does the overall customer signal say, and what specific points recur in recent reviews? |
| Demo | Is a demo available, and did I enjoy the way it plays? |
| Sale price | Is the current price within my budget for a game I am genuinely interested in? |
A large discount does not by itself make a game a good purchase. A smaller discount—or no purchase at all—may be the better choice if the game is a weak fit or you are not ready to decide. Sale prices, review presentation, and demo availability can change, so check the current Steam store page for each candidate.
