Smoke odor and soot need different treatment. If a book is valuable, irreplaceable, structurally damaged, or difficult to treat, ask a book or paper conservator before attempting to clean it.
What should you do first?
Separate the book from unaffected books and assess the immediate risks. Water from sewage or another potentially contaminated source is not an ordinary clean-water accident; avoid treating it as a home drying project. Active mold—often wet or furry growth—also calls for precautions. Do not disturb it, and isolate the affected book while you address the surrounding conditions.

- Keep people away from active mold and avoid brushing or otherwise disturbing it.
- For a valuable, irreplaceable, or badly damaged book, contact a book or paper conservator for an assessment.
- If the book is replaceable, weigh its condition and importance against the time and cost of treatment. The Library of Congress notes that “Conservation work to address damage is time consuming and costly to do correctly.”
The aim of initial response is to prevent further damage; for water damage, that includes reducing the risk of mold growth. See the Library of Congress Response and Recovery guidance.

Begin promptly. The Canadian Conservation Institute says mold can begin growing within 24 hours after a book gets wet; that is a general risk, not a prediction that mold will appear at exactly that point in every setting. Keep the room cool, lower humidity, and improve air circulation without directing a fan at the book.

For one wet book
- Gently fan the book open. Do not force the pages apart if they resist.
- Stand it on absorbent material and replace that material as it becomes wet.
- As it dries, turn the book upside down. Keep heat low and allow air to circulate; a fan can help if it is not aimed directly at the book.
These steps follow the Canadian Conservation Institute’s Basic Care – Books guidance. Significant water damage can leave a book changed in shape or size, so drying does not necessarily restore its original condition.
If air drying is not practical
The Library of Congress advises that newly wet or moldy books that cannot be air dried within two days can be prepared for freezing, following the Northeast Document Conservation Center freeze-drying guidance. For a large collection, professional freeze-drying is the preferred approach in the Canadian Conservation Institute’s guidance; contact preservation professionals rather than attempting collection-scale treatment yourself.

What should you do if a book is moldy?
Treat active mold as both a health and preservation concern, not as a stain to scrub away. The Library of Congress recommends not disturbing active growth, isolating affected material, and controlling the environment. Its mold guidance describes precautions and notes that an experienced conservator may be needed.
Dried or dormant mold still requires care. Mold can weaken paper and boards, and a household vacuum without suitable filtration and containment can spread spores. The Canadian Conservation Institute’s mold bulletin describes HEPA-filter vacuuming for dry mold on book covers and edges, with inspection of the covers, spine, inside covers, and text block. It is conservation guidance, not a general recommendation to clean valuable books at home.

- Do not brush active mold or use an ordinary household vacuum on it.
How do you remove smoke odor from a book?
Odor can remain after visible debris is gone. The Library of Congress suggests gently dusting with a clean, soft cosmetic brush or a magnetic dusting cloth, then exposing more of the book’s surface to air. Another option is to put the book in a closed container for several days with activated charcoal or baking soda, kept separate so it does not touch the book. Check the book daily for mold while it is enclosed.
These odor-control steps are distinct from soot removal. See the Library of Congress Collection Emergencies FAQ.

How should you handle soot on a book?
Soot may contain oily residue, and rubbing can push it further into paper. The Library of Congress’s smoke-and-soot guidance describes low-suction HEPA vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, moving straight up and down rather than dragging across the surface; a flexible screen can help protect fragile material. It also advises wearing latex or nitrile gloves and blotting, not rubbing, with a vulcanized rubber sponge, sometimes called a cosmetic sponge.
Soot cleaning carries substantial risk. If the book is unique, irreplaceable, fragile, or heavily soiled, consult a conservator instead of attempting treatment. Do not assume a soot sponge will remove mold, reverse water damage, or eliminate smoke odor.

Should you treat the book or replace it?
Choose based on the book’s importance, condition, and the scale of the damage—not on a promise that one cleaner will fix every problem. A replaceable book with limited damage may not justify costly conservation. An irreplaceable or valuable volume, damage affecting the pages or binding, active mold, or a large incident is a stronger reason to seek professional advice.
Stabilize and contain the damage first. Then compare the likely treatment effort and outcome with the book’s monetary, historical, or sentimental value. If you decide not to pursue treatment for a low-value item, the Library of Congress notes that leaving it as-is, boxing it, and improving storage can be preferable to unnecessary intervention. Its books preservation FAQ and recovery guidance discuss these decisions and the limits of recovery.
