In Red Dead Redemption 2, special weapons are found through Gunslinger duels, stranger missions, treasure hunts, and exploration—not just at gunsmiths. This guide covers selected examples, including where to look, what unlocks each encounter, and which pickups can be missed if you leave without searching the area or looting the relevant body.
How special weapons are found
There is no single unlock method. Some weapons follow a mission or duel, others reward a treasure hunt, and a few are exploration pickups. Gunsmiths do not sell every special weapon. Pay attention after an encounter: a weapon may be lying near a body or need to be looted, and leaving the area without investigating can mean missing it.

| Weapon | Location and route | Prerequisite or timing | Missability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flaco’s Revolver | At Flaco Hernandez’s camp near Cairn Lake, southeast of Colter. | Granger’s Revolver | At Emmet Granger’s pig farm just east of Flatneck Station. Complete the duel and pick up his signature firearm. GameSpot’s guide gives the location and pickup route. | Gunslinger mission encounter with Emmet Granger. | Yes. Collect it after the duel before leaving. |
| Midnight’s Pistol | Read Billy Midnight’s photograph to unlock the encounter, ask the Rhodes post-office clerk about him, then board the train to confront him. GameSpot’s guide outlines this route. | Gunslinger encounter unlocked by reading the photograph. | The guide’s route makes the encounter and collection dependent on following up after the duel; it does not specify a separate missability condition. |
| Rare Shotgun | Guides report two locations: a cabin at Manito Glade, north of Annesburg, and a cave west of Hanging Dog Ranch. See GameSpot and Gameranx. | Exploration pickup; no mission prerequisite is stated in these guides. | Explore both reported locations; no separate missability condition is stated. |
| Ancient Tomahawk | Look inside a broken target on the east side of Calumet Ravine, east of the Wapiti Indian Reservation. Location reported by GameSpot and Gameranx. | Exploration pickup; no mission prerequisite is stated in these guides. | No separate missability condition is stated. |
| Stone Hatchet | Rockstar says the Stone Hatchet can be discovered in RDR2 single-player after completing the Stone Hatchet Challenges in GTA Online. Its location is hidden and must be discovered; see Rockstar Support. | Complete the Stone Hatchet Challenges in GTA Online first. This prerequisite applies to the Stone Hatchet, not the other weapons in this guide. | Rockstar’s support answer describes it as a hidden discovery; it does not specify a missability condition. |
Other special-weapon routes
Gameranx also lists several weapons with routes worth distinguishing from the exploration pickups above. These notes identify the broad acquisition method, not a complete step-by-step route or verified chapter checklist.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to avoid leaving a weapon behind
- Read photographs and mission clues. For the Gunslinger encounters, examine and read the relevant photograph rather than traveling straight to a location without unlocking the encounter.
- Finish the encounter and search immediately. Check the area around the opponent’s body and loot it where relevant. Flaco’s Revolver is specifically described as lying near his body.
- Investigate unusual landmarks. A broken target at Calumet Ravine, a cabin at Manito Glade, or a cave west of Hanging Dog Ranch may hold a pickup that is easy to overlook.
- Check the unlock condition before pursuing a route. The Stone Hatchet has a GTA Online challenge prerequisite; do not assume that condition applies to other special weapons.
If you want a broader paper reference for collectibles and unlock conditions, the Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide describes annotated maps covering special collectibles, hidden lockboxes, and uncharted landmarks, plus roadmaps for mission and unlockable availability. It is optional; the cited description does not establish current stock or price.
