How to Find Indie Game Showcases, Festivals, and Pop-Up Events Near You

The most reliable way to find indie game events is to combine one recurring online calendar with local organizer searches. Start with Steam Next Fest for playable demos, check the IGDA global events listing and your nearest IGDA chapter for physical events, then search your city with terms such as “indie game showcase,” “indie festival,” “arcade,” “game jam,” and “pop-up.” Before you travel, confirm the date, venue, admission or RSVP rule, accessibility details, and whether the event is public or industry-only on the organizer’s own page.

Start with the calendars that repeat

There is no single nationwide calendar that captures every indie showcase, festival, meetup, and temporary arcade. Local organizers announce events through different channels, and listings can change after they first appear. A repeatable search therefore has two layers:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Use an established calendar to discover an event or organizer. Steam Next Fest is the dependable online route; IGDA’s global and chapter calendars are practical starting points for local events.
  2. Verify the specific event at the source. Open the organizer’s own page and check the current date, venue, admission instructions, accessibility information, and audience restrictions.

This approach is faster than searching random social posts and safer than assuming an old event listing is still accurate.

Use Steam Next Fest to play upcoming indie games online

Steam describes Next Fest as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.” It runs three times a year—in February, June, and October—and is built around trying unreleased games, meeting developers through broadcasts or streams, and giving feedback. Because it is online, you can participate even when there is no physical event nearby.

Know the current October 2026 dates

The October 2026 edition is scheduled for October 19–26, 2026. Those dates are specific to that edition; Steam’s page also records separate press-preview, demo-submission, and opt-out deadlines. If you are planning around a release, vacation, or streaming schedule, recheck the current Steamworks event page rather than relying on a cached calendar entry.

Find demos efficiently

  1. Open the current Steam Next Fest event page during the active week.
  2. Filter or browse by genre, tags, and featured collections that match your interests.
  3. Install several demos before you begin playing so download time does not consume your available session.
  4. Record the games you want to revisit, wishlist, follow, or discuss with the developer.
  5. Look for the developer’s own community links when you want to submit useful feedback; a demo page may change after the festival.

Next Fest is a discovery and play opportunity, not a substitute for a local gathering. It is best for sampling a broad range of games and finding developers whose future events or showcases you can follow.

Search IGDA’s global and chapter calendars for physical events

The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) events listing aggregates expos, conferences, meetups, and indie-focused sessions. Use the global listing to identify an event or an active organizer, then open that organizer’s page for the authoritative details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find your nearest IGDA chapter

Chapter calendars are often the strongest source for local showcases and pop-ups because they are maintained close to the developer community. Search for your city or region in the chapter directory, then inspect the chapter’s calendar and social links. A chapter listing may categorize an event as a festival, meetup, or pop-up, which helps you distinguish a hands-on showcase from a lecture or networking night.

For example, IGDA Chicago lists Chicago Indie Game Showcase 2026 and labels entries with categories such as festival, meetup, and pop-up. IGDA DC links to local opportunities including Play at the Library, Cherry Blossom Arcade, and District Arcade. These examples illustrate the method rather than guaranteeing that every listing is currently open, public, or free; verify each event’s own page before making plans.

Check nonprofit and foundation calendars

Community and nonprofit calendars can reveal events that do not appear in commercial convention searches. The IGDA Foundation calendar includes game jams and its Download for Charity Steam event. The 2026 listing describes the event as “Showcasing 100+ titles on Steam.” A foundation calendar is especially useful when you want game jams, charity showcases, or community-led programming rather than a large trade show.

Search your city by event type and venue

Once you have an IGDA chapter or other organizer name, combine it with your location and the kind of event you want. Use several variations because organizers do not use one standard label.

Search phrases that produce different results

  • indie game events near me
  • indie game showcase this weekend
  • where can I play upcoming indie games?
  • game festivals in [city]
  • arcade pop-up with indie games
  • IGDA events near me
  • Steam Next Fest dates
  • [city] game jam
  • [city] indie festival

Replace [city] with the municipality or metro area you can realistically reach. Add a neighborhood, university, library, or venue name when a broad search returns too many results.

Check the places that host temporary events

Indie events often appear on calendars for independent game stores, arcades, libraries, universities, museums, and convention venues. Search each venue’s event page as well as the organizer’s page. A library may host a playable exhibition or game jam; an arcade may run a free-play evening; a university may list a student showcase under a department calendar rather than a citywide events page.

Meetup, Eventbrite, and social posts are useful leads, but treat them as discovery tools. Use the organizer or venue page to confirm that the event is still scheduled and that the published admission instructions are current.

Confirm the listing before you travel

Do not rely on a search-result snippet, repost, or old social announcement. Open the event’s own page and check every item below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Date and time

  • Confirm the exact day, opening and closing times, and time zone if the event is online.
  • Check whether the date is a single session, a multi-day festival, or one day within a larger convention.
  • Look for a last-minute update, postponement notice, or changed schedule.

Venue and travel details

  • Verify the full venue name and street address.
  • Check whether the event uses a room, annex, hotel level, or temporary outdoor space rather than the venue’s main entrance.
  • Estimate travel time, parking or transit needs, and the time required for registration.

Admission and audience

  • Determine whether entry is free, ticketed, RSVP-only, or capacity-limited.
  • Check whether a ticket covers the whole festival or only a talk, tournament, or workshop.
  • Confirm whether the event is public, developer-focused, press-preview, or industry-only.
  • Look for age rules, identification requirements, and rules for children or guests.

Accessibility and practical policies

  • Read the organizer’s accessibility information, including step-free routes, seating, restrooms, captions, quiet areas, and service-animal policy when listed.
  • Check bag, camera, food, and recording rules if you plan to bring equipment.
  • Find the contact method for accessibility questions instead of guessing from venue photos.

What you can actually play

“Showcase” can mean hands-on demos, a stage presentation, a gallery of trailers, or a developer talk. Confirm whether free-play stations are promised, whether demos are scheduled, and whether the event emphasizes networking or lectures. A pop-up usually suggests a shorter, hands-on appearance; a festival or convention may offer more games, talks, and press or developer programming.

Compare events using the same decision grid

When several listings look promising, score them against the same criteria rather than choosing by title alone.

Criterion Questions to ask Why it matters
Format Online, in-person, or hybrid? Determines travel, equipment, and how you will play.
Distance How long is the trip door to door? A short pop-up may be more practical than a distant convention.
Access Public, RSVP, ticketed, or industry-only? Prevents arriving without the required credential.
Activity Free-play arcade, scheduled demos, talks, or networking? Matches the event to your goal.
Games Is a genre, theme, student group, or regional scene emphasized? Helps you find the kind of games you want to play.
Accessibility Are access details and a contact provided? Lets you plan around mobility, sensory, hearing, or other needs.
Cost Is the price stated, and what does admission include? Separates a free community meetup from a paid multi-day event.
Timing Does it fit a release window, vacation, or available weekend? Useful when you want to play a game before launch or attend while traveling.

Write the answers in a note or spreadsheet. If a field is not stated, contact the organizer instead of assuming it is free, accessible, or open to everyone.

Plan a local showcase visit

One to two weeks before

  1. Save the organizer’s page and the venue address.
  2. Complete the RSVP or buy the correct ticket if required.
  3. Review the published accessibility information and contact the organizer with specific questions.
  4. List the games, talks, or developers you most want to see.
  5. Check whether the event has a timetable, demo reservation system, or capacity limit.

The day before

  1. Reopen the event page for schedule, room, or entrance changes.
  2. Confirm your ticket, RSVP email, identification, and any QR code requirements.
  3. Check transit, parking, weather, and venue entry instructions.
  4. Charge your phone and bring only equipment allowed by the venue.

At the event

  • Arrive early when entry is capacity-limited or demos are scheduled.
  • Follow station time limits so more attendees can play.
  • Ask before recording a developer, screen, or conversation.
  • Give concise, specific feedback when a developer invites it: describe what you tried, what worked, and where you became confused.
  • Note the developer’s official follow or community channel if you want updates after the event.

Choose the right event for your goal

If you want to play many unreleased games

Prioritize Steam Next Fest or a large festival with confirmed free-play stations. Online access removes travel limits, while a physical festival lets you experience controllers, cabinets, and local multiplayer setups in person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want to meet local developers

Look at your IGDA chapter, game jams, and smaller meetups. Read the description for networking language, developer attendance, or community programming rather than assuming every showcase offers conversation time.

If you want an arcade-style afternoon

Search for “arcade,” “pop-up,” and “free-play” with your city name, then verify that the listing promises playable stations. A talk-only event with the word “games” in its title will not meet this goal.

If you are planning around a release

Compare the event date with the game’s announced release window and with Steam Next Fest deadlines or dates. Keep the qualification attached to the date: the October 19–26, 2026 Next Fest schedule applies to that edition and may not be the schedule for another year.

What to do when your city has no listing

An empty city calendar does not prove that no event exists. Try the nearest metro area, nearby university towns, and regional IGDA chapters. Search venues directly, especially libraries, museums, independent arcades, and game stores. Ask a chapter or venue whether a recurring meetup is announced through a mailing list rather than a public calendar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also participate online through Steam Next Fest and foundation or community events while watching for the next local announcement. Keep a short list of organizers and venues; checking those pages periodically is more effective than repeating a broad web search with no location or event type.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Trusting an old date: Recheck the organizer’s page immediately before traveling.
  • Assuming “showcase” means hands-on play: Confirm free-play stations or demo appointments.
  • Ignoring access restrictions: Verify public, RSVP, press, and industry status.
  • Using only one calendar: Combine Steam Next Fest, IGDA listings, chapter pages, foundation calendars, and venue searches.
  • Skipping accessibility checks: Read the published details and contact the organizer with questions.
  • Planning from a repost: Treat Meetup, Eventbrite, and social posts as leads and confirm at the source.
  • Expecting a national master list: Local organizer research remains necessary because pop-ups are distributed across many venues and communities.

A repeatable search routine

For each month or season, follow this sequence:

  1. Check whether the next Steam Next Fest falls within your planning window; the recurring months are February, June, and October.
  2. Review the IGDA global events listing for your region.
  3. Open your nearest IGDA chapter calendar and note festivals, meetups, pop-ups, and game jams.
  4. Check the IGDA Foundation calendar for community and charity events.
  5. Search your city and nearby cities with “indie game showcase,” “indie festival,” “arcade,” “game jam,” and “pop-up.”
  6. Inspect local game stores, arcades, libraries, universities, museums, and convention venues.
  7. Record the date, venue, access rule, cost, accessibility information, and confirmed playable content.
  8. Verify the organizer’s page again before you leave home.
