The fastest route to a gaming-aware therapist is to start with a regulated treatment locator or health-system referral, then screen individual clinicians for both clinical competence and their ability to discuss gaming without moral judgment. Check licensure, location, age range, fees, availability, privacy and crisis procedures before booking. In the first call, explain what gaming is doing in your life—not simply how many hours you play—and ask how it would be assessed and included in treatment.
Gaming can be a hobby, a community, a coping tool or part of someone’s identity. It can also coexist with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, loneliness, sleep problems or relationship stress. A suitable professional should be able to understand that context while still examining loss of control, distress and effects on daily functioning.

Start by defining the help you want
“I need a therapist who understands gaming” can describe several different needs. You might want help with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, loneliness, identity, relationships, sleep or stress, with gaming becoming relevant because it is your main hobby or coping strategy. You might instead be worried that gaming is difficult to control and is interfering with school, work, health or relationships. Write down the outcome you want before searching; it prevents a directory label from deciding what your problem is for you.

Useful details include when you play, what you miss or postpone, how you feel when you try to stop, whether sleep or physical health has changed, and what happens to mood and relationships. Include positive functions too: gaming may provide friendship, creative expression, routine or relief from stress. This balanced account gives a clinician something more useful than an “hours played” threshold.

Do not diagnose yourself from a profile or checklist
“Gaming addiction” is often used casually online. A clinician should assess the pattern and its consequences rather than assume a disorder from enthusiasm, a particular game or a high number of hours. You can ask for help with a gaming-related concern without accepting a label in advance.
What gaming disorder means clinically
The World Health Organization’s ICD-11 defines gaming disorder as a pattern of digital- or video-gaming behavior involving impaired control; increasing priority given to gaming over other activities; and continuing or escalating despite negative consequences. The pattern must be severe enough to cause significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas. It normally needs to have been evident for at least 12 months.
That definition puts functioning and control ahead of a stopwatch. Missing sleep, repeatedly failing to meet obligations, withdrawing from important relationships or being unable to reduce play despite serious consequences are more clinically relevant than a fixed number of hours. WHO also reports that gaming disorder affects only a small proportion of people who engage in digital or video gaming. Most people who play do not meet the definition.

- Can you choose when to start, stop or take a break?
- Has gaming taken priority over sleep, food, school, work, health care or relationships?
- Have consequences continued or worsened despite attempts to change?
- How long has the pattern lasted, and how severe is the impairment?
- Could anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, substance use, loneliness, stress or another health issue be contributing?
- What benefits does gaming provide, and what would you want to preserve?

United States: FindTreatment.gov and 988
FindTreatment.gov is a confidential, anonymous locator for mental-health and substance-use treatment. Use it to identify programs, then contact providers directly to confirm that they treat your concern, serve your state and accept new patients. SAMHSA’s health-care guidance recommends comparing insurance or self-pay cost, new-patient availability, appointment fit and the qualities that matter to you. For immediate emotional support in the United States, FindTreatment.gov points to free, confidential, 24/7 988 support. Call, text or chat through the 988 service; use local emergency services or an emergency department when someone is in immediate danger.
England: NHS and the National Centre for Gaming Disorders
In England, an NHS GP, local council, pharmacy or NHS talking-therapies service can help identify local treatment. Check the current local NHS page because referral routes and eligibility vary by area. The NHS National Centre for Gaming Disorders is a specialist option for people aged 13 and over who have difficulty controlling gaming and its impact. It accepts self-referrals as well as referrals from family members and professionals.

NHS England reported 745 referrals to the centre from its opening in October 2019 through 2023. The service explicitly says it does not offer crisis interventions. For urgent risk, contact a GP, community mental-health team, emergency department or police rather than waiting for a specialist appointment.
Directories and cross-jurisdiction options
The International Problematic Gaming and Gaming Disorder Certification (IPGGC) directory lists professionals holding current IPGGC certifications. Its International Gaming Disorder Certificate requires behavioral-health education or licensure, 15 hours of approved gaming training, 50 direct-contact hours, consultation, evaluation and recertification requirements. Those requirements can be useful signals, but the organization tells users to verify that a professional’s license or certification is appropriate for their needs.

In the United Kingdom, the BACP Therapist Directory includes registered or accredited BACP members. BACP advises consumers to check qualifications and professional standards because titles such as “counselor” or “psychotherapist” can otherwise be used broadly. A directory listing is a starting point, not a guarantee of clinical fit.

Use “gamer” in a profile as a conversation starter, not proof of competence. A provider may enjoy games but have no training in assessment or treatment. Conversely, a clinician may not play your titles yet understand gaming culture, online communities and the role games play in your life. The screening call is where you distinguish familiarity from a safe, evidence-informed approach.

Before discussing private details, verify the clinician’s professional license with the relevant regulator and confirm that it is current in the jurisdiction where you will receive care. Check whether the provider sees your age group, treats your main concerns, offers the modality you need and can legally provide telehealth where you are physically located during sessions.
| What to verify | Why it matters | Where to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| License and jurisdiction | Licensure governs scope, complaints processes and where care may be delivered. | The applicable state, provincial, national or professional regulator. |
| Age range | Child, adolescent, adult and family services require different training and consent arrangements. | Provider profile and intake office. |
| Clinical scope | The clinician may understand gaming but not treat trauma, ADHD, substance use or severe mood symptoms. | Profile, consultation and written practice information. |
| Modality | Individual, group, family, parent, in-person and telehealth care have different requirements. | Provider and local telehealth rules. |
| Language and accessibility | Communication, sensory, mobility and captioning needs affect whether treatment is usable. | Ask the practice specifically; do not infer from a directory. |
| Privacy | Gaming communities and family situations can involve sensitive identity, account and relationship information. | Privacy notice, platform details and intake staff. |
Training certificates are not clinical licenses. Geek Therapeutics advertises education in geek culture, video-game interventions, fandom-based care, digital wellness and problematic gaming; completion should be treated as a training signal only. Independently verify the provider’s license, scope and current practice.
Make a short screening call before booking
Many practices offer a brief consultation. Prepare the same questions for each candidate so you can compare answers rather than choosing based on a polished profile.
- Experience: “What experience do you have with gamers or gaming-related concerns?” Ask what kinds of problems they have treated, not merely whether they “like games.”
- Assessment: “How do you distinguish healthy gaming from impairment?” A useful answer should address control, consequences, functioning, distress and duration rather than hours alone.
- Treatment role: “How would gaming fit into my treatment goals?” Look for curiosity about what gaming does for you and a plan that does not assume total abstinence is always necessary.
- Other concerns: “Do you treat my anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, sleep or relationship stress?” Gaming may be a symptom, coping method, trigger or unrelated hobby; the clinician should assess the whole picture.
- Access: Ask about fees, insurance, sliding-scale places, appointment times, wait list, cancellation policy, languages, accessibility and telehealth rules.
- Privacy: Ask what platform is used, how records are handled and whether sessions can be conducted privately from your location.
- Safety: “What happens if I become unsafe between sessions?” Get the practice’s crisis and referral procedure before an emergency occurs.
Recognize a good fit—and warning signs
| A promising response | A warning sign |
|---|---|
| Asks how gaming affects sleep, health, school, work, relationships, mood and safety. | Declares gaming itself pathological without asking about impact. |
| Uses non-stigmatizing language and is willing to learn unfamiliar games or communities. | Makes jokes about gamers, calls you lazy or treats gaming as a moral failure. |
| Explains how gaming will be connected to agreed goals. | Demands a fixed “no games” rule without assessment or collaboration. |
| Checks license, scope, age eligibility and telehealth location. | Is vague about credentials, fees, records or where they can practice. |
| Coordinates or refers when another condition or level of care is needed. | Claims a gaming certificate replaces broader clinical training. |
| Provides a clear crisis pathway. | Says to wait for the next appointment during an emergency. |
You do not need a therapist who plays every title. You do need one who can listen without ridicule, understand online and offline context, and explain how decisions will be made. If the first clinician is dismissive or prescriptive in a way that feels unsafe, ask for a referral and try another provider.

Choose among providers with a consistent scorecard
When several options look reasonable, compare them on the factors that affect outcomes and whether you can actually attend.
| Factor | Questions to compare |
|---|---|
| Clinical fit | Does this person treat the concern you want to address and work with your age group? |
| Gaming understanding | Can they discuss gaming culture, communities, monetization, identity and problematic patterns without stereotypes? |
| Credentials and scope | Is the license current, and does specialist training supplement rather than replace it? |
| Access | Are location, legal telehealth access, wait time, schedule, language and accessibility workable? |
| Cost | What are insurance benefits, self-pay fees, sliding-scale places and cancellation charges? |
| Treatment model | Would individual, group, family, parent, peer, CBT-informed or harm-reduction work fit your goals? |
| Safety | Who handles urgent concerns, and how does the practice coordinate medical or emergency care? |
A provider who is slightly less specialized but available, affordable and licensed for your location may be a better choice than a distant specialist with a long wait. You can start with a general mental-health clinician and request consultation or referral if gaming-specific expertise becomes necessary.
Prepare for the first appointment
- Bring a one- or two-week snapshot of sleep, gaming sessions, meals, school or work obligations and mood. It is information, not a test.
- List attempts to cut back, what helped, what made change harder and what you fear losing if gaming changes.
- Identify immediate goals such as restoring a sleep schedule, attending class, reducing conflict or treating panic.
- Include medical conditions, medications, substance use and other symptoms that could affect concentration, energy or impulse control.
- If you are a parent or caregiver, note the young person’s routines, consent preferences, family conflict and any safeguarding concern.
Agree on what will be measured. Depending on your goals, that might be nights meeting a sleep target, completed obligations, mood ratings, conflict frequency, time spent outside gaming or your ability to stop when planned. The measure should reflect functioning and wellbeing, not punishment for enjoying games.

Individual therapy
Individual work can examine triggers, habits, emotion regulation, thoughts about gaming, sleep routines and underlying conditions. Cognitive-behavioral, motivational and other evidence-informed methods may be adapted to your goals. Ask how the clinician will know whether a strategy is helping and what happens if it is not.
Family and parent work
For adolescents or households affected by conflict, family sessions can address boundaries, communication, supervision, sleep and shared expectations. Parent workshops may help caregivers respond consistently without turning every disagreement into a debate about games.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Groups and peer support
Groups can reduce isolation and provide practice with skills and accountability. Ask who leads the group, what information is shared, how confidentiality works and whether the group is appropriate for your age and risk level.
Harm-reduction goals
Some people aim first to restore sleep, attend school, protect relationships or regain control rather than stop gaming entirely. A clinician should explain the rationale for any limits and revisit them with evidence from your progress. If abstinence is recommended, ask why it is necessary for your situation and what support will replace the functions gaming served.
Handle cost, waiting lists and privacy
Ask every practice for the full financial picture: insurance participation, deductible or co-pay, self-pay rate, sliding-scale availability, missed-appointment charges and the expected number or frequency of sessions. Public services may have eligibility rules or waiting lists. Put your name on more than one appropriate list while continuing to search for an available clinician; tell offices if your needs become urgent.
For telehealth, confirm that the clinician can legally treat you where you will be during the session, not merely where the office is located. Use a private room and headphones when possible, and ask how the platform, messages and records are secured. Do not share game account passwords, payment details or private chat logs unless there is a clear clinical reason and you understand how the information will be stored.
Know when to use urgent or emergency help
Gaming-specific programs are not emergency services. The NHS National Centre for Gaming Disorders states, “We do not offer crisis interventions.” If someone may harm themselves or another person, cannot stay safe, is severely medically unwell or is experiencing an immediate psychiatric emergency, use local emergency services or an emergency department. In England, a GP, community mental-health team or police may be part of the urgent pathway. In the United States, call or text 988 for free, confidential, 24/7 crisis support; call 911 or go to an emergency department for immediate danger.
Tell the clinician about suicidal thoughts, self-harm, violence, abuse, severe sleep deprivation, substance use or inability to meet basic needs even if gaming seems to be the trigger. Those risks determine the level and speed of care.
A reusable search checklist
- Write the concern, desired change and relevant benefits of gaming.
- Search an official locator, NHS or health-system referral route, or a regulated professional directory.
- Add gaming-specific and location-specific search terms.
- Shortlist providers who match your age, concern, language, modality and jurisdiction.
- Verify current license, specialist training, fees, insurance, availability, privacy and crisis process.
- Ask the screening questions and record each answer.
- Choose the provider whose approach is respectful, clinically appropriate and realistically accessible.
- At the first session, agree on goals and measures based on functioning, health and wellbeing.
- Reassess the fit after a few sessions; request a referral if the clinician is dismissive, out of scope or unable to provide safe care.
Bottom line
Look for a licensed clinician who treats the problem you actually have and can include gaming without stereotyping it. The strongest evidence of fit is a careful assessment of control, consequences, functioning, distress and duration, followed by collaborative goals. Use official locators and specialist services where eligible, verify every practical detail before booking, and switch to crisis pathways immediately when safety is at risk.
